Simon Brown joins me to share how his role at Consensys has evolved since his last appearance in January 2024 and why he's now leading the charge on the Consensys Network State. It's all about reconnecting the sprawl of the Ethereum ecosystem, reinforcing the cultural gravity that made Ethereum magical in the first place, and creating a more cohesive network of builders, founders, and ecosystem experts. In this episode, we dive into how the Consensys Network State initiative is setting the stage for Ethereum's next decade, how it's bridging gaps between projects and people, and what it means for the future of decentralized coordination. We also get into some big-picture thinking around the evolution of Ethereum, the rise of network states, stablecoin growth, and what it takes to keep that cultural gravity intact as Ethereum continues to grow.Resources Mentioned:Sobol Agreements ProtocolConsensys Network State Flashbots BuilderNetPectra UpgradeConnect with Simon Brown and Consensys:Simon Brown: X(Twitter) |  LinkedIn  |  MediumConsensys:  Website  |  X(Twitter) Leave a review and subscribe onApple PodcastsSpotifyMoneyNeverSleeps (website)Email us: info@norioventures.comConnect with Pete Townsend and MoneyNeverSleeps:Pete Townsend: X/Twitter  |  LinkedIn MoneyNeverSleeps: X/Twitter  |  LinkedIn  |  Newsletter

This week, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Fergal McGovern, founder and CEO of VisibleThread, for one of the most enlightening founder chats I've had in a while.Fergal's been building for decades—starting with enterprise systems in the '90s, then launching and selling his first startup SteelTrace, and eventually pivoting VisibleThread through the 2008 crash into a trusted platform serving global leaders like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Comcast, and government agencies across the U.S., Canada, and Australia. What I loved about this conversation is how practical and honest Fergal is—especially when it comes to the real story behind fundraising. He's been through the early seed round, the post-pivot rebuild, and the tough decision to fuel growth with debt instead of chasing a VC path that didn't quite fit.In this episode, we get into:- Why 50% growth year-over-year is solid—but not VC-sexy- What makes a startup truly “VC-eligible” (and what doesn't)-How Fergal built a repeatable sales playbook before hiring reps—and why that mattered more than headcount- The thinking behind VisibleThread's expansion into a second product—basically Grammarly for secure, regulated environments- Why GenAI and agents aren't always the right tool—and when logic still wins- And yes, how designing gardens relates to building great UXIf you're a founder figuring out your funding path—or just trying to scale without losing your mind—this one's for you.Resources:The Hard Thing About Hard Things, Ben HorowitzEpisode 170 of the Full Ratchet podcast:  Craig Wortmann - Sales Mastery & Storytelling at Scaling StartupsConnect with Fergal McGovern and VisibleThread:Fergal McGovern: LinkedInVisibleThread: LinkedIn  |  WebsiteLeave a review and subscribe onApple PodcastsSpotifyMoneyNeverSleeps (website)Email us: info@norioventures.comConnect with Pete Townsend and MoneyNeverSleeps:Pete Townsend: X/Twitter  |  LinkedIn MoneyNeverSleeps: X/Twitter  |  LinkedIn  |  Newsletter

Anthony Rose is the co-founder and CEO of SeedLegals, the #1 platform for startup funding and legals in the UK. But long before he was helping tens of thousands of founders raise capital and avoid legal potholes, Anthony was in the digital trenches – first turning the music industry on its head with Kazaa, then helping reinvent online streaming at the BBC with iPlayer, before building and selling a few startups of his own.In this episode, we go deep into what it really means to have founder-problem fit, the magic of applying a product mindset to gnarly challenges like startup legal docs, and how Anthony is now taking SeedLegals across the pond to crack the US market. We also talk about reinventing yourself as a founder, knowing when to build vs. when to sell, and why your legal docs should be like the owner's manual in your car – built on all the ways things can go wrong. If you've ever tried to sell an unfinished product, pitched into skepticism, or had a strange love affair with a weirdly specific problem – this one's for you.KEY POINTS FROM THIS EPISODEFounder-Problem Fit: Anthony thrives on solving the problems nobody else wants—like turning legal complexity into a smooth, scalable product experience for startups. The Productization of Law: From auto-generated funding docs to clauses like “No Pay, No Play,” SeedLegals is redefining how legals should work at early stage. From iPlayer to Legal Tech: The shift from media to law wasn't planned—it was sparked by a party in Rome and a technical founder's obsession with inefficiency.Scaling the Right Way: Anthony explains why raising too much money too soon can kill your startup's focus—and how lean execution wins.Going Global, One Event at a Time: With SeedLegals now expanding into the US, Anthony is pounding the pavement in NYC to build community-led growth from the ground up.Selling as a Founder: Why the first sales hire outperformed Anthony—and how he learned to switch from “builder brain” to “buyer focus.Connect with Anthony Rose and SeedLegals:SeedLegals WebsiteFollow SeedLegals on LinkedIn Connect with Anthony Rose on LinkedInKEYWORDS:SeedLegals, Anthony Rose, Pete Townsend, MoneyNeverSleeps, startup legal docs, founder problem fit, UK startups, US expansion, startup funding, cap tables, term sheets, startup founder tips, legal tech, product development, startup fundraising, iPlayer, Kazaa, venture capital, VC advice, New York startups, scaling globally, early stage startups, startup mistakes, how to pitch, founder legal protection, Techstars Web3, startup acceleratorLeave a review and subscribe onApple PodcastsSpotifyMoneyNeverSleeps (website)Email us: info@norioventures.comFollow on X(Twitter):Pete Townsend: https://twitter.com/petetownsendnvMoneyNeverSleeps: https://twitter.com/MNSshowFollow on LinkedIn:Pete Townsend: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pete-townsend-1b18301a/MoneyNeverSleeps: https://www.linkedin.com/company/28661903/MoneyNeverSleeps newsletter: https://moneyneversleeps.substack.com/

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Mary Chastain. Mary is a writer and editor at Legal Insurrection. She's also a sometimes contributor to The Hill, Washington Examiner, and Reason, and FEE. Mary is on X at @Mchastain81. Mary's Music Pick: Stone Temple Pilots:This is another in a series of episodes (think Daryl Hall & John Oates and The Monkees) in which your hosts believe there is a reputation to be restored or repaired. In this case, far too many people seem to look at Stone Temple Pilots with disdain, dismissing them as third-rate Pearl Jam imitators or a product of an audience that was willing to accept pretty much any/every grunge-type act. This, as you'll find out, was not the case.Or, perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is singer Scott Weiland's troubles with drug addiction and the law. While true, it doesn't in any way devalue his contributions to the band and his status as one of the best frontmen of the decade. What we have here is a band that shared influences with other artists like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice In Chains and released a debut album, Core, steeped in that sound. Even then, there were indications STP were not quite like their peers. Bassist Robert DeLeo was a major force in crafting the sound and writing the songs. Guitarist and brother Dean DeLeo pulled not from Pete Townsend and The Who, but from the more experimental later-era Led Zeppelin releases, with monster riffs and chords in line with Jimmy Page's best work. Eric Kretz was far more than just a time-keeper, adding fills, rolls, and rhythms that were essential to driving the composition.Purple, the follow-up to Core, has aged wonderfully and is an essential album that helps define the sound of the decade. By then, the band mostly had moved past the sludgy sound for which grunge was known and was beginning to color from a more varied palette. “Interstate Love Song” is one of the most iconic songs of the 1990s for a good reason. Tiny Music . . . Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop was met with muted reception if not downright confusion. What many missed at the time is rightfully regarded now as an immense step forward, as the band blended elements of glam and psychedelic rock, with hints of Bowie, T. Rex, and the Beach Boys in places. The remainder of the band's catalog provides strong reminders about the talent contained inside Stone Temple Pilots. Despite hiatuses and break-ups, that's what should be the legacy of the band. Political Beats now has the receipts to prove it.

In 2016, while earning his doctorate in music at the University of Southern California, Alexander Lloyd Blake founded the choral group Tonality. His initial aim was to create a choral ensemble that would represent and celebrate the full diversity of Los Angeles' population. That done, Tonality started to focus each concert on social-justice issues, from global warming to gun violence, always providing audiences with an array of resources to encourage activism and change.Tonality's repertoire is as varied as its membership, ranging from Gregorian chant to contemporary pieces in a variety of styles and genres, but Alex's commitment to harnessing the power of choral music to foment social change has remained central. In just eight years, Tonality has garnered nationwide attention. In 2020 Tonality received the Chorus America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, and in 2022 Alex and Tonality's work were featured on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” They've released two albums, and just this past spring, Tonality won its first Grammy for performing on composer Carla Patullo's album “So She Howls.” The ensemble has collaborated with a number of world-renowned composers, including Reena Esmail and Michael Giacchino, and has performed with such artists as Pete Townsend, Lara Downes and Björk. They have also sung for TV and film soundtracks, including “Space Jam: a New Legacy.”Here Alex explains what led him to found Tonality and details the intricacies of leading a choral ensemble that has to remain increasingly nimble and focused.https://www.ourtonality.org/https://alexanderlblake.com/

Send us a Text Message. On this weeks episode, we discuss King Crimson's 1969 debut: In the Court of the Crimson King. Not only is In the Court of the Crimson King regarded as one of the greatest and most influential progressive rock (or prog rock) albums of all time, it is considered by many to be the album that defined the genre. Like all prog rock musicians, Robert Fripp, Greg Lake, Micheal Giles, and Ian McDonald all know their way around their instruments.   But what makes King Crimson stand out from those they would influence, and what makes this album worthy of a listen, is that the band never lost the sight of what made a song a song; they weren't interested in excessive musicianship over musicality, and most of In the Court of the Crimson King is hauntingly beautiful. Based on the band's live performances, established artists such as Pete Townsend and Jimi Hendrix sung the band's praises before the album was ever released. Their performance in front of an estimated 500,00 people in Hyde Park on a bill with the Rolling Stones in July 1969 reinforced that King Crimson was a band to watch.  When In the Court of the Crimson King was release later that year, songs like title track and "21st Century Schizoid Man" laid down the foundational building blocks for progressive rock for years to come, and cemented King Crimson as one of the most influential bands to come out of the 1960s.  It's never been easier to call 512-766-8495Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

As William Gibson, author of the 1984 book Neuromancer, famously said: “The future is already here, it's just not that evenly distributed”.  I think of this quote every time I get pushback from naysayers on the long-term usability of blockchain technology. In the intro to a recent episode with the first group of 4 founders from Techstars Web3 we talked to about common misconceptions about web3, I referred to the estimated less than 20 million daily active users of crypto. Crypto in all of its shapes and forms is accountable for the overwhelming majority of the use of blockchain technology around the world today. Recently, Lex Sokolin from the Fintech Blueprint (shout out to Lex!) summarized things nicely by pointing out that the daily active users of major blockchain protocols such as Ethereum, Binance Chain, Polygon, and Solana increased from 5 million to nearly 8 million this year.  Whether we're talking about 8 million daily active users or 20 million users, with blockchain, we're only in the ballpark of the number of Robinhood daily active users or the population of the Netherlands. Given how much of my time I spend in crypto and blockchain it feels like we're already mainstream, and that the future is already here. But, back to the reality of today and our 20 million daily active users, we have some work to do. We're on a trajectory with crypto adoption similar to that of the internet in the 1990's, and if the growth projections hold water, blockchain by association will become ‘mainstream' during the 2030s. That's a 10-year range, so what's the timeline to where more of humanity with internet access are using blockchain daily than not? In terms of adoption, what are the things we need to do more of (or less of) in web3 to trigger blockchain adoption by web2-only users? Do they even need to know they're using blockchain? To answer these questions and more this week, I asked Andrea Miele from The Colony, Fabien Arneodo from SportSyncTech, and Nick Mason from ProofSpace what they think about the mainstream adoption of blockchain technology. Pete Townsend said it best. “Hope I die before I get old” he wrote in The Who's anthemic 1965 hit, “My Generation”. But what Townsend really meant in a lyric that best captured the rebellious Boomer spirit of the Sixties, he later acknowledged, was “hope I die before I get very rich”. Townsend, as it happens, is still alive and, like many other members of his generation, very very rich. In fact, the accumulated wealth of Townsend's generation is now estimated by the New York Times to be over $78 trillion. And it's this seismic imbalance of power and wealth between his Boomer generation and those born after 1960 that Michael Ignatieff writes about in his excellent new LIBERTIES essay, “A History of My Privileges”. Never one to dodge uncomfortable truths, Michael Ignatieff points an accusatory finger at himself in acknowledging that his generation has much responsibility for today's polycrisis. This is the beginning of a much needed conversation from one of the Boomer generation's most articulate liberals.Born in Canada, educated at the University of Toronto and Harvard, Michael Ignatieff is a university professor, writer and former politician. Between 2006 and 2011, Michael Ignatieff served as an MP in the Parliament of Canada and then as Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and Leader of the Official Opposition. He is a member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada and holds thirteen honorary degrees. Between 2012 and 2015 he served as Centennial Chair at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs in New York. Between 2014 and 2016 he was Edward R. Murrow Chair of the Press, Politics and Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. Michael Ignatieff was until recently the Rector and President of Central European University in Budapest. He stepped down at the end of July 2021, to stay as a Professor in the History Department.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. It's legend time again around here at the LIFERS podcast. Of all the bands to emerge from the punk explosion of the late ‘70s, few were as adept at fusing melody and fury in quite the same way that the great Stiff Little Fingers were. Seminal in every way, SLF would go on to influence Naked Raygun, Green Day, and pretty much every punk band that ever cared to carry a tune. This week we welcome the voice of that band —a one Mr. Jake Burns— to tell us about growing up in Belfast, seeing Rory Gallagher on TV, soccer, getting a call from Pete Townsend, touring with the Tom Robinson Band, Eric Clapton and Rock Against Racism, soccer, KT's Kids, Sir Kenny Branagh, moving to Chicago, moving to West Virginia, soccer, and how to cut down on touring without quitting.

Rick Vito Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson What a lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon. Grammy-nominated guitarist, singer, and producer, Rick Vito, probably best known as a member of Fleetwood Mac, was a sunny delight, hisself. Coming to us Live from Franklin TN, following the release of his recently dropped latest album, Cadillac Man, we wiled away the hour talking his tastes… The Stones, Duane Eddy, BB King, his passions, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Green, his custom guitars, and his history… a 41-year marriage, two great kids, starting out with Delaney and Bonnie and Eric Clapton, what a story there! Moving to LA, crashing with Todd Rundgren, Something/Anything? Could I have played that album more freshman year? John Prine's Common Sense… oh please! An all-time favorite! Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, with our friends Russ Kunkel and Kootch, Bob Seger, and that idea of Rick's to play slide on Like a Rock, a tasty choice that would become an iconic anthem for Chevrolet and a generation. A great story about meeting John Fogerty, playing with Leon Russell, touring with Tina Turner, picking it up with Mick in the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band with Rick Vito, and getting nominated for a Grammy, and the last great show before the pandemic alongside Christine McVie (in her final performance), Billy Gibbons, Pete Townsend, David Gilmour, Bill Wyman, John Mayall, and a host of other musical luminaries in Mick Fleetwood & Friends Celebrate the Music of Peter Green concert filmed in London in 2020. We were treated to a glimpse of one of Rick Vito's Soul Agent Signature Custom Designed Art Deco Guitars which is available from Reverend Guitars. This pink beauty with black and white piping, Rick designed to have attributes of a Gibson, a Fender, and a Gretch. Rick's new album, Cadillac Man, is available now and has been on heavy rotation in the Snicki Mobile. I'm just loving it. A lotta rock n roll, heavy on the R & B. Ryan Gruss  “The Fantasty Football of Music Making”  Ryan's journey in the music business began after graduating from The Berklee College of Music in 2000 with a degree in Musical Performance for Drums, and then moving to New York City to begin his "career" in the real world. It was during his second week at Atlantic when Ryan was approached by the HR department, asking if he was interested in becoming Ahmet Erteguns' (the legendary Founder and CEO of Atlantic) assistant. His mind was blown and he instantly accepted the position. In 2010, Ryan launched The Loop Loft and began recording other musicians and treating it like a record label, providing the artists with royalties from the sales of each loop pack. Word began to spread amongst the studio musician community, and a roster of legendary musicians like Omar Hakim, Joey Waronker, Matt Chamberlain began to form and quickly grow. For the next 8 years, Ryan continued to organically build The Loop Loft, adding more artists and content on a weekly basis. Partnerships with companies like Ableton, Native Instruments, BandLab and PreSonus were formed. Guitar Center also began to sell products from The Loop Loft. The company was now the top-selling source for loop and samples, generating millions of dollars of revenue each year. It was a career and a company that Ryan had never dreamed of or anticipated, but he had finally found his musical North Star. Ryan left Native Instruments in 2020 and formed Yurt Rock, literally inside of his Yurt studio in the hills of LA. But with the COVID pandemic grinding studio work to a halt, Ryan decided to take the time and move his family to Nashville, a place that many consider the music capital of the world. It was time for a fresh start. With dozens of the world's top musicians, Yurt Rock has quickly become the ultimate source for producers, engineers and songwriters seeking not only loops and samples, but also custom BATTERY/MASCHINE kits, Ableton Live Packs, Logic Sessions, multitracks and much more.     Things That Came Up: -3:50 Yurt Rock is the “Fantasy Football” of music making  -5:10 The Loop Loft was acquired by Native Instruments in 2018.  -12:30 Berklee set the tone for relationships throughout life.  -14:30 Expanding into software, partnering with plug-in companies and diving into new media.  -16:00 Affordable price points are key -18:00 Redmond's Big Modern Drums Vol. 1 and 2, as well as Locked!
