In this sermon, we look at Matthew 7:24-29. We learn that rain, water, and wind will come to us – just like in the story, there are troubles that come up in our lives suddenly. We see that we need to both hear and act on the teachings of our teacher, Jesus. When we do so, we'll have a house that is built on a firm foundation and withstand's life storms.

In this sermon, I look at what Southern Baptist believe about the nature and value of education and the importance of education through a decidedly Christian lens. If God is the Creator of all things, and the Omniscient Knower of all things, then all truth is God's truth. That means that apart from knowing the God of Truth, we can only know things as partially true. The implications for how we view knowledge and wisdom and education are immense. I'll use Jesus' parable about the wise and foolish builders and some Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3 to help us see the essentials for constructing a Christian education.

Intelligence is knowledge, wisdom is how you apply it. It is not enough that we are biblically literate, we must also be biblically obedient. Building the wise foundation takes time and intentionality. Nobody accidentally builds their house upon or "in" the rock.
Sunday, January 30, 2022 – Finally we’ve made it to the last Sunday in the longest and darkest month of the year! Have you noticed the daylight hours getting longer? That’s a good sign…. Today we are speaking of the “Wise and Foolish Builders” that is spoken of in Matthew 7:24-29. Jesus finishes the “Sermon on the Mount” with this parable of a wise man who not only listens to His teachings but also puts them into practice building a solid foundation that withstands the storms of life. Conversely, the man that listens but doesn’t put the teachings into practice is the foolish man that builds on the sand and the house crumbles under the storms. There is much for us to glean from this teaching, so I encourage you to take a few minutes to worship and study with us. Be wise today in how you build your life foundation. The storms are coming, and your foundation will be exposed not only to those around you but more importantly to the Lord that determines your eternal destination. Be wise and be blessed…

We live in a fallen and sinful world which assures us that at some point our lives are going to be shaken. The key to surviving this is to embrace the idea and prepare for it. How do we prepare?
Wisdom, a word seldom used and less understood in our culture, is the word biblical authors use to describe a life lived as a true human. A wise life is a life lived in obedience to God. But is this the type of life that humans should try to live today? And, even if we wanted to live a wise life, where could we begin to learn how? As we conclude our series on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, we discuss these questions a more.

The sermon on the mount is the subject of many sermons. Matthew’s recording lets us know that this message was not a single occurrence. The Greek word taught that is used, is continuous action. The illustration of building a house that Jesus uses is powerful. The difference between the two houses is the foundation on which it is built. The illustration of the rock and the sand is often portrayed as the rock being stronger. Dr. Hughes points out that sand is actually more stable than rock, but the true difference is sand’s location. Sand is in the lowlands, or by the seashore. The rock on which one of the men built his house, was actually a tall cliff. The house on the sand is in the lowlands. When the storms of life come, the house in the lowlands can become overwhelmed. The choice to build a house on the sand in the lowlands is convenience. It takes more effort to build a house in the high rock, but that man never has to worry about the storms of life flooding his house. The choice to build the house in the lowlands is based on it being easier. It takes the minimum effort. When the man built his house with minimum effort, he chose how much chaos he could live with. He allowed minimums to define his life. That same concept has crept into our culture. We have learned to take the easy path, and similarly choose how much chaos we can live with. When we are hearers of the word, but not doers of the word, we start trying to figure out the easiest way to get by. We are blessed with great preaching in our church, but if all we do is hear that preaching, but do not put it into practice, we will only find chaos. This was such an issue in Jesus’ time, he repeated the sermon on the mount message at least five times, and perhaps many more. When we start accepting minimums in life, we begin to accept lower standards, and can easily become spiritually lazy. The bible is clear that by doing the minimum, we invite chaos into our lives. When the storms of life come along, the man with minimum standards can easily be washed away.
Wisdom makes it possible to make progress in getting better at being you. That’s bite-size wisdom; it’s daily digesting the miraculous gift of life so that we are nourished by it. The 2019 Summer Sermon series continues as Ben Patterson (guest preacher) continues the summer sermon series, "Wisdom in Bite-Size Pieces" with a sermon on "Who determines right from wrong?" The worship service kicks off with a reading of Psalm 25:1-10 by Nicole Pearson. Then the worship band leads us into worship through song with a two-song worship set. Craig Stephenson and Janna Mattia lead worship through music with "Here I Am To Worship" and "What a Beautiful Name." Following worship guests are invited to stand and greet one another. Then Nicole Pearson (formerly of the LJCC Board of Trustees) gives the morning announcements. Hung-Wei Tsung then gives the Prayers of the People. Pastor Steve Murray gives an introduction to Ben Patterson and then Ben gives the sermon. The morning offering is taken and the band leads us back into worship through song with a new song - "All Who Are Thirsty," followed by "Tremble." Before guests leave Pastor Steve Murray gives the Benediction. Ben Patterson retired last year as a Campus Pastor at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. Previously he served in the New Providence Presbyterian Church of New Jersey and as the Founding Pastor of the Irvine Presbyterian Church in California. He has written several books, including "Serving God: The Grand Essentials of Work & Worship," "Waiting: Finding Hope When God Seems Silent," and "God’s Prayer Book: The Power and Pleasure of Praying the Psalms." He is also a contributing editor to Christianity Today and Leadership Journal. Ben earned his M.Div. from the American Baptist Seminary of the West. He and his wife, Lauretta, have four grown children.

The late Pastor Doug Brandon, formerly of Trion, GA, preaches from Mathew 7:24-29 during a Revival Meeting in TN, many years ago. I mention Trion, GA, because that's where most folk would know him from, although he was originally from the Strawberry Plains, TN area. The message you are about to hear, is one of his most well-known ones.
God loves us just the way we are...and He loves us too much to let us stay that way. God not only wants people to come to a saving faith in Jesus; He wants us to experience the freedom and fullness of life that comes from deep, confident and unshakable faith. This week introduces us to the second of five core values that can lead to this - Providential Relationships

The life and teaching of Jesus is a tremendous example.
We are the Church of Jesus Christ, and yet many of us don’t know who Jesus is. Son of God? Human being? Who is he and what did he do? And why does it matter to me?
Can you and I speak with as much authority as Jesus?
What are you building your life on? If it is anything other than Christ and His teaching, it is sinking sand. Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount by confronting us with the issue of obedience. Will you be wise and do what He says or not?
As we close out our series studying the Sermon on the Mount, John Martyn urges us to fight for obedience as our clearest means of assurance and security in Christ.
Dr. Mark Labberton, President of Fuller Theological Seminary, takes us through one of Christ's best known parables about building your house on rock or sand. As our enemies bring storms against us, we can, both individually and as a church, endure those storms. The real victory however, is in telling the story of how Christ's love shelters us from those storms - our firsthand accounts of the power of His love. Would you enter into the story? It begins with building your house on The Rock. Hear God's Word and be inspired.
