Folk-punk duo AJJ was playing Mama Buzz Cafe in Oakland when they were approached by a guy named Skylar Suorez who was angling for some free records. Skylar told the Phoenix group that he worked at Asian Man Records. The group was excited at the prospect of being on the same label that released groups like Ten In The Swear Jar, Shinobu and copious ska albums. Shortly after, Asian Man signed them. On this episode, we bring on Sean and Ben from AJJ and dissect their ska roots. Ben is a much bigger fan of the genre and even played some ska in an early band called Free Delivery. While Sean admits he clowned on ska in high school (The entire golf team at his school listened to Christian ska!). However, we find out that he sang lead vocals on the ska song "ABCs" (with Mike Park and Jeff Rosenstock). He also performed at an "In Defense of Ska" event at Sojo's Donuts in Mesa, Arizona, and told the audience he was "ska-adjacent." On today's episode, we talk about all of Ben's favorite 90s and 2 Tone ska bands, how AJJ and Blue Meanies are similar, which ska bands AJJ has played with, and which grocery store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, AJJ once did a show at. We also talk about AJJ's AV Club Undercover show where they mashed up songs by Talking Heads, Neil Young, Wheatus and more. We discuss Mike Park telling the group that they were too big for Asian Man--but no other label was interested in them, and we talk at length about Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu, who opened for AJJ last year. And we beg him to be a guest on the podcast. The ChurchGear PodcastAre you a church tech director? What's up skater's? We'll make this quick. The Southwest dudes (Ted S [the person who writes these notes] and Ryan)sat down with ASU professor and abolitionist Alan Gomez to discuss police and prison abolition strategies and the enduring carceral society we live in. This is a broad talk with a lot of branches so make sure you're ready for a ride. Tommy Guerrero was kind enough to join us on a call to discuss the story beyond his now-iconic "End Racism" board from the '80s. (37:35) Thank you to everyone for listening. We hope this helps. Folk punk musician Sean Bonnette joined Carter to talk about his new album GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY. They discuss staying in the music industry for the long haul, making music that explores the bad feelings of politics, and making sense of turbulent times.
They started out as Andrew Jackson Jihad in 2004 - two friends in Arizona, taking on the weird and wonderful world of folk-punk. In the ensuing years, vocalist/guitarist Sean Bonnette and bassist Ben Gallaty have created some cult-classic LPs, toured the world and found themselves in a variety of peculiar situations. While in Australia on a headlining tour, the duo warmed up for their Newcastle date by telling stories about everything from Fieldy from Korn's solo album right up to playing in the back of a bikie bar. AJJ's latest releases are the rarities compilation "only God can judge me and more," the 2017 EP "Back in the Jazz Coffin" and their 2016 LP "The Bible 2." This week, we're joined by our very good friends Alexei Toliopoulos (Blank Slate Movie Podcast!) and Marcel Blanch-de Wilt (Marcel's Best Friends Club!) for our fourth annual Xmas Xtravaganza! We talk about our ideal gifts (then exchange Shitmas gifts instead), meet holiday characters Traditional Santa, Cool Santa and Geoffrey Claus-Toliopoulos. Plus, we play an exciting game of That Sounds Good, What's That About? in which we explore an Avengers-style shared-universe Christmas movie!MUSIC USED:SSJ Xmas Theme 2.0: Xavier Rubetzki NoonanChris Farren's Disney's Frozen (ft. We loved their album Shit In The Apple Pie so much we named the episode after it, but it only occurred to me recently that the record was hiding a really fantastic, melancholic, anxious Christmas song - one which would fit in really well on our weird podcast. If you like it, you should grab the whole album for pay-what-you-want on Bandcamp!CLICK HERE to download!Follow Marcel on Twitter: @MarceldeWFollow Alexei on Twitter: @ThisIsAlexei

Alex Garland's film Annihilation combines meditative storytelling with visceral body horror and action, all of which drew in AJJ frontman Sean Bonnette from the first time he saw it. So much so that he watched it over and over again while it was in theaters. He loved the movie's juxtaposition of otherwordly natural beauty with startling bouts of extreme violence, all set to an ambitious and unsettling score from Ben Salisbury and Portishead's Geoff Barrow. Bonnette is a true film aficionado who's been inspired by all Alex Garland's other works including Men and Devs, as well as the singular cinematic vision of Everything Everywhere All At Once.Be sure to check AJJ's new album Disposable Everything, out 5/26!Listen to AJJ frontman Sean Bonnette chat about this and more in the new episode.
