Breht listens to, reflects on, and critically engages with a public lecture by the late philosopher Michael Sugrue entitled "Nietzsche and the Death of God". He discusses the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, the politics of modern day Nietzscheans, the death of god and consumer capitalism as a form a nihilism, the ongoing nature of human civilizational and spiritual evolution, the biography of Nietzsche, what the next step of human evolution might be, the synthesis of religion and science, scientific and ontological materialism, the limits of atheism, the importance of spiritual struggle, and much more. Professor Sugrue passed away last year, and Breht has always found his free, public lectures on philosophy to be helpful and really well done. In the spirit of free and open access to education, Breht offers his knowledge of philosophy alongside this offering by Professor Sugrue. The use of this lecture series falls under the protections of the Fair Use doctrine. Outro Music: "Temple Grandin Too" by AJJ Learn about, follow, and support the show: shoelessinsouthdakota.com

Join Tamara for an interview with Zack Turner, a Savannah native who studied Sequential Art at SCAD for 3 years, until COVID happened. Since then, he has been working and pursuing his art by creating sequential art zines, illustrations, and occasional murals. Professor and author Matt McManus returns to the show to discuss his newest book, "The Political Theory of Liberal Socialism". Together they explore the major themes of the book, hash out the disagreements they have between revolutionary Marxism and democratic socialism, explore critical thinkers like Karl Marx, Thomas Paine, Mary Wollstonecraft, and John Rawls, wrestle with the questions of revolution and communism as the ultimate goal of socialism, and much more. "Providing a comprehensive critical genealogy of liberal socialism from a sympathetic but critical standpoint, McManus traces its core to the Revolutionary period that catalyzed major divisions in liberal political theory to the French Revolution that saw the emergence of writers like Mary Wollstonecraft and Thomas Paine who argued that liberal principles could only be inadequately instantiated in a society with high levels of material and social inequality to John Stuart Mill, the first major thinker who declared himself a liberal and a socialist and who made major contributions to both traditions through his efforts to synthesize and conciliate them." This week, we are very excited to share an extensive interview with musician, producer, and one of Chid's favorite artists, David Jerkovich. David has never been on a podcast before, so we won (you fucked up big time, Marc Maron!) The fellas talk about a lot of things, from memory to creation, to throwing your whole life away on a whim to join a band. Plus, we lament the weird state of the music industry and radio today, why you should always see legacy acts live when you have the chance, and a lot more! Does rapper/podcaster Open Mike Eagle like ska? Well, when I brought up Fishbone, he immediately said that he loved the song "Unyielding Conditioning." Great! Now that that's out of the way, this week, we talk about a whole lot of other topics with the great OME including AJJ, They Might Be Giants, MF Doom, Adventure Time, and he has a fantastic Angelo Moore story! With AJJ specifically, we discuss what it's like to tour with the group, how he exercises on the road, and Adam even forces him to choose between Sean and Ben! We also go deep into OME's all-time favorite band They Might Be Giants, and discuss every moment he's referenced their music in his own songs. And he tells us about what it was like to be a judge on the "I Left My Body" video contest. Plus, we determine whether "Boss Of Me" is a ska song or NOT! We cover a range of other topics, including his long friendship with Hannibal Buress (And how Hannibal once beat him at a rap battle contest), The Pixies, famous people he's mentioned in his songs (Peter Dinklage, Marc Maron, Joe Rogan, Jon Lovitz) and whether they're aware that they were mentioned. And Tim Robinson's show I Think You Should Leave gets brought up--of course. Adam even makes OME choose a favorite sketch!Plus we finally decide once and for all if punching nazis is a good or bad thing (hint: It's good) Support the show

In the early 2000s, Jamie Stewart wanted to go to Vietnam. They brought a rubber baby doll with them to take photos while they were there. One of those photos became the cover for Xiu Xiu's excellent A Promise album. But, for this trip to happen in the first place, Jamie needed to raise some money. For 8 months before they left, they recorded as many punk and ska bands as they could (One of the bands was Short Round). This isn't the only time that Jamie has intersected with ska. Another band they recorded, Firme, lent them their horn section for the Knife Play record. One of their old 90s bands, IBOPA (Indestructible Beat Of Palo Alto), played with a lot of ska bands since they were a fun horn-driven band (Ska was an influence, but not a style they played). Another one of their bands, Ten In The Swear Jar, released a record on Asian Man Records, and Pitchfork made a point to talk about ska in the review, despite there being NO ska on the album. We talk about all of this with Jamie, and so much more. We discuss the time period when they worked at Streetlight Records, how they discovered ska and reggae on KPFK on Sundays, how their 2nd concert ever was Pato Banton and Tippa Irie, and how they briefly played bass in a dub band. They also tell us about the time GG Allin jumped on stage and demanded they "plays some blues." They tell us stories about The Cactus Club. They tell us why Deerhoof is an amazing band. We learn who Richard Snakedick is. We discuss what it was like to perform a balloon solo as the opening act on AJJ's 2021 tour, and we find out why they once blurted out "Fred Flintstone's Lucius Dick." Plus, Jamie sings for us a Weird Al-style parody song they wrote when they were a teenager. Just imagine The Grand Illusion by Styx, but it's The Grand Fart! Support the show

Riemen vast voor een informatieve aflevering. We leren weer veel over Alex. Premium groeten! On this Summer Special Nick from Freedom of Species and Lottie discuss what journalist Naomi Klein refers to as trickle down identity politics. This form of identity politics, typified by people such as Hillary Clinton, prioritises achieving a more diverse range of people in positions of power, with the argument that if more people from marginalised groups get into positions of power, these benefits will eventually “trickle down” to that group as a whole. We do this drawing on the following article that Nick has written: https://progressivepostings.wordpress.com/2021/02/26/idpols3/ This show is a 3CR Summer Special – see here for other Specials: https://www.3cr.org.au/summerspecials2022-2023 Music: Why Are You Like This? Welcome to an all-new Films for the Void, Bonus Episode #17! In this episode, Landon interviews Jamie Coletta - a Los Angeles based expert in all things artist management and public relations. As a former publicity staffer for SideOneDummy Records, their responsibility stemmed to getting some of the last decade's most successful indie alternative-punk releases heard, including those by Jeff Rosenstock, PUP, Chris Farren, AJJ, and many more. However, after the label restructured, they spent very little time getting the ball rolling on the next iteration of their journey. And that next step came in the form of No Earbuds – their own endeavor that combines marketing, artist management, and publicity, putting them all under one roof, as they currently represent artists such as The Wonder Years, Origami Angel, Foxing, Bartees Strange, and John-Allison Weiss. You can learn more about their work at noearbuds.com.Landon and Jamie talk about growing up in Rhode Island, the TRL pipeline, getting their start in punk, going independent, marriage, and parenthood, along with some of their favorite movies - all on the latest episode of Films for the Void!TIME STAMPS00:00:16 Interview w/ Jamie Coletta00:38:23 Round Robin Movie Discussion

Sponsor: Kidsweek! Kijk voor de aanbieding op www.kidsweek.nl/ikkeniemanddie. Shannon, Guitarist / Vocalist of California Emo act Awakebutstillinbed is on the show this week! We cover tons of topics including the upcoming unreleased material, touring, caffeine, cycling, elden ring, DIY shows, border crossing, what the people want, The Chonky Man, anxieties and the future of Awakebutstillinbed. For Your Health, Jimmy Eat World, Joyce Manor, CERCE, Algae Bloom, I Told You I Would Eat You, AJJ, Loma Prieta, Camp Trash, Home Is Where, Star 99, Hawak, Code Orange Kids, Pool Kids, and so many more.
Vakantievoorpret! Folk-punk duo AJJ was playing Mama Buzz Cafe in Oakland when they were approached by a guy named Skylar Suorez who was angling for some free records. Skylar told the Phoenix group that he worked at Asian Man Records. The group was excited at the prospect of being on the same label that released groups like Ten In The Swear Jar, Shinobu and copious ska albums. Shortly after, Asian Man signed them. On this episode, we bring on Sean and Ben from AJJ and dissect their ska roots. Ben is a much bigger fan of the genre and even played some ska in an early band called Free Delivery. While Sean admits he clowned on ska in high school (The entire golf team at his school listened to Christian ska!). However, we find out that he sang lead vocals on the ska song "ABCs" (with Mike Park and Jeff Rosenstock). He also performed at an "In Defense of Ska" event at Sojo's Donuts in Mesa, Arizona, and told the audience he was "ska-adjacent." On today's episode, we talk about all of Ben's favorite 90s and 2 Tone ska bands, how AJJ and Blue Meanies are similar, which ska bands AJJ has played with, and which grocery store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, AJJ once did a show at. We also talk about AJJ's AV Club Undercover show where they mashed up songs by Talking Heads, Neil Young, Wheatus and more. We discuss Mike Park telling the group that they were too big for Asian Man--but no other label was interested in them, and we talk at length about Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu, who opened for AJJ last year. And we beg him to be a guest on the podcast. The ChurchGear PodcastAre you a church tech director? Ok, ok. Zo geschiedde. Zo. Oh ja we hebben sponsors! During Skankin' Pickle's run, Mike Park had so many songs, he tapped Less Than Jake to record an album with him. He called it The Bruce Lee Band. This record was released in 1995. A decade later, The Bruce Lee Band returned with Beautiful World, this time backed by RX Bandits. But then, nearly a decade later, The Bruce Lee Band became a solid group with Mike Park, Jeff Rosenstock, Dan Potthast and Kevin Higuchi (Though Mike Huguenor was involved in the two 2014 records). They've put out several releases. Last year they released the excellent EP Division in the Heartland. And on May 27th, they will release their full-length, One Step Forward. Two Steps Back--incredible, passionate and at times angry ska-punk. On today's episode, we talk with two members of The Bruce Lee Band: Mike Park and Jeff Rosenstock. We discuss the two's origin story--Jeff's old band Arrogant Sons of Bitches tried to play at an event Mike threw at the Oakland A's parking lot, but Mike said no. We talk about the role Chris Candy played in the two becoming friends. And we talk about the mid-to-late-2000s era at Asian Man Records, where Mike had a vibrant selection of amazing punk bands like Bomb The Music Industry, AJJ, Lemuria and Shinobu. We also discuss how drummer Kevin Higuchi went from San Jose bar band drummer to joining The Bruce Lee Band and Jeff Rosenstock's band, Mike Park smoking weed with Alkaline Trio, and the infamous Skankin' Pickle reunion shows in Japan. And of course, we dig deep into The Bruce Lee Band's excellent catalog. Support the show
Mike Park has been running Asian Man Records out of his mom's garage for over two decades with a refreshing approach that might seem unusual by today's standards: there's no advances and every release is a handshake agreement. “I do this for the love of music,” writes Park on the label's About page. “Not for capitalist gain or status recognition. I try my best to do the right things ethically and to believe in helping others instead of striving for profit over people.” Somehow its worked, with Asian Man amassing a small, but powerful catalog/community of underground music comprised of seminal third-wave ska, early Alkaline Trio records, Jeff Rosenstock, Joyce Manor, AJJ and many others. On this episode, Saxon decided to hide the crystal ball, puts away systematic analysis, and erase the galaxy brain chalk board to talk with Park about the very real highs and lows of being an indie label head on the fringes of the music industry. Along the way, the two discuss format changes, early 2K sellout culture, the role of a small label in today's ecosystem, and lament briefly about the disappearance of Myspace. Hello NTWICS! Yes, due to matters completely outside of our control (and not to be further discussed).. the show has been re-invented — AGAIN! We're as excited as ever to still be here with you, though, and hope that you are excited as well. This week, the gang talks FOLK-PUNK with AJJ's 2007 release - "People Who Can Eat People are the Luckiest People in the World". Friend of the Pod (and Pocket Cast boy) Jameson comes through clutch with another solid album recommend. Of course, the "is this really a music podcast?" debate ensues, and Damon ultimately ends up peaking the mic filled with unresolved feelings about Weeaboos. All this and so much more, here! Buckle up, this is going to be a ride.
