RECORDED NOVEMBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. Among auspicious April events in rock 'n' roll history, April 13, 1983, is the date that Violent Femmes released their beloved, eponymous first album and gifted the world with Blister in the Sun, Add It Up, Gone Daddy Gone, and other instant classics. The album has ascended to the status of "generational hand-me-down" according to Violent Femmes founding member and our fellow Milwaukeean, Brian Ritchie. April 5, 1994 is the date that Nirvana's Kurt Cobain passed away. Both topics loom large in this conversation with Brian. Watch our VIDEO where Brian describes how Nirvana was selected to open for Violent Femmes in Austalia, and Kurt's ragged state of mind even in those early days. WATCH HERE: https://youtube.com/shorts/usGs3M3atlY Plus the Femmes are touring this year, so what better time re-share Brian's stories about his band living through every scene in This Is Spinal Tap in real life; their big break being discovered by The Pretenders while sidewalk busking in Milwaukee; and his 3-word secret to success..."Just keep going." Mike Vinopal (Opal Vinopal, Local Motive, badcandy, wht.rbbt.obj) joined me for food and conversation outside Hey Nonny in Arlington Heights (10 South Vail Avenue/heynonny.com). The episode starts with an acoustic performance of the Opal Vinopal song “Speck in the Universe,” and then transitions to the food from Hey Nonny… lots of food! Cheese curds with IPA ranch? The Nonny Burger (2 Slagel Farm beef patties/aged cheddar/dijonnaise/bacon jam/ caramelized red onions, brioche)? Yes, please! We talked about all of Mike’s projects, including his new, very personal, Opal Vinopal songs. We also got caught up on Local Motive, badcandy and wht.rbbt.obj. See Local Motive at Hey Nonny on May 15! Speaking of Hey Nonny … what on earth does the name mean? In their words: Old English songs and verse use “Hey Nonny Nonny” to describe a state of cheerful bliss you feel as you let go of your cares. In Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, the song “Sigh No More” reminds women that “men were deceivers ever.” What to do about it? “Be you blithe and bonnie, converting all your sounds of woe into Hey Nonny Nonny.” We also love the Violent Femmes’ 1991 song “Hey Nonny Nonny” in which the singer tries to suppress his “wanton thoughts” inspired by a “beauty bathing” into . . . “Hey Nonny Nonny.” Car Con Carne sponsored by Easy Automation: easy-automation.net Transform your living space with cutting-edge home automation. Ben Nichols from Lucero is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. Ben just released an unplugged record which features him and Lucero piano player Rick Steff performing stripped-down versions of some Lucero classics and deep cuts. We talked about that as well as the first Violent Femmes record, The Nerves' song “Hanging on the Telephone,” the Little Rock music scene, his brother Jeff's movie The Bikeriders, and the time both our bands opened for the Replacements in 2014. I always have a great time with Ben and this was no exception. Listen and subscribe!

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Every band/artist has to have a first album. Sometimes those albums are good, sometimes they're not, and sometimes they just show potential. This episode, we look at some first albums over the gamut of the rock era that we regard as great, including some Australian albums. You've probably heard of most, but not all. In rock news, we look at Neil Young, The Wiggles (yes!), Joe Bonamassa, Jethro Tull and Billboard's new list – The Top 200 Albums of the 21st Century. Our Album You Must Hear before You Die is Paris 1919 by John Cale. Mick regards this elegant 1973 album from the Velvet Underground co-founder as a stunning listen, and a great intro to John Cale. Chris Thomas' production is, as usual, precise, while Cale presents some wonderful imagery in the lyrics. Alt-rock legends Violent Femmes are touring in 2024 celebrating the 40th anniversary of their sophomore release 'Hallowed Ground.' But in certain cities -- including Nashville on October 9 -- they're playing a wide selection from their discography with the accompaniment of symphony orchestras. Femmes frontman Gordon Gano shared with WNXP about the experience playing with so many instrumentalists, and also the sustained musical chemistry with bandmate Brian Ritchie.

Brian Ritchie is our first guest whose primary instrument - the one that helped make his band Violent Femmes a household name - is an acoustic bass. Today we hear how all that came to be, the band's path from busking on the streets of Milwaukee to rocking stadiums, and why their approach really hasn't changed all that much. Along the way he tells some funny stories about early gigs, opens up about a new acoustic bass he's gotten his hands on and even shares what Flea told him about working with producer Michael Beinhorn. Also - and this will make sense after you listen - here are two updates to things I say in this episode: My amazing engineer/mixer Matt Noble pointed me to lutefish.com, a hardware-software set-up that does enable near real-time jamming over distances less than 500 miles. I haven't tried it out, because it requires being hardwired to my modem and that's too far away from my basses. Parquet Courts' (fantastic) bassist Sean Yeaton doesn't play a stock short scale bass - it's a frankenbass made up of the body and pickups of an ‘84 Fender Bullet bass (short scale) and the neck of a '50s P-Bass reissue (standard scale). It also has a weird hole in it. Jordan Crosby Lee (guitar and vocals) is a born again North Carolinian originally from Texas. His love of Texas music still runs deep, and his conversational songwriting style is redolent of Robert Earl Keen and Bruce Robison. North Carolina native Jodi Hildebran Lee (drums, harmonica, and vocals) brings a more traditional/bluesy country dressing to their sound. Her voice is bold, brilliant, and hair-raisingly beautiful. Their sound is uniquely their own, but if a comparison must be made, think Violent Femmes meets Johnny & June. They cover everything from their love for each other to the rueful life of a Sasquatch hunter. The lyrics are nuanced, funny, and purposeful. The duo's first full-length album, "Songs for Butchie," is out now in three volumes. The album is named in honor of Jordan's late father, John Lee, who passed away on November 3, 2020, from a rare brain cancer. "Butchie" was undoubtedly the band's biggest fan, and his faith in Jordan and Jodi is what drove them to finally write and release this album. Melissa Clarke, Ph.D., of Americana Highways called their music on this album “witty and entertaining, even as the lyrics weave in serious topics to consider.” Canadian born but raised in Ireland, Cormac Russell has taken his music across the globe, including tours in England and China. He released his acclaimed seventh album titled 'Resurrection' last year, which won some very favourable reviews in the press, as well as airplay on national and international radio. He will be releasing his eighth LP titled 'The Water Came Rushing' this October. Playing all the instruments himself, he draws from a wide range of influences; from Neil Young and Bob Dylan, to literary giants like William Butler Yeats and James Joyce.

This mixtape looks back - mostly, at punk consciousness music from the 80's and sees how little has changed and why it is always necessary to keep this music close to your heart. They say if you are not liberal at University you don't have a feart, if you are not conservative at middle age you don't have a brain. Here is to those who follow their heart and stay young to kick against the pricks. They keep making pricks. We begin our octogenarian episode with Tommy's artistic expression of his anger towards Becker before we record an intro in arrears, featuring the magic of our new THX (or THC) bumper. And then, friends, 80 is a big number, and we are doing a big song with a big guest! We welcome Mr. Victor DeLorenzo of the Violent Femmes to discuss what some would consider to be the most popular Beatles song. Moments before doors opened on 2024's Taste of Randolph, Julie Darling (West Loop Community Organization President) and Kelli Packer (West Loop Community Organization Spokesperson) jumped in the car to talk about the 27th Taste of Randolph, its vendors, the music acts and where that “suggested donation” at the gate goes to… Sampled during the conversation: Food from Publican Quality Meats, Baked Cheese Haus and Matcha Cita. The two sets of sisters comprising Neptune's Core are on a creative roll. Since I last spoke with them, they nailed down their live show and their music continues to take chances and go to interesting places. I can only imagine what they'll be capable of by the time they can all legally vote. Give this band your ears. Neptune's Core has two new songs available for streaming that are worth your attention. Keep up with the band on Instagram (neptunes.core). To fuel our conversation, we met at Roti in Lincoln Park (1000 W. North Avenue). We sampled amazing menu items including the Mezza Protein Bowl (Chicken Roti, Harissa Chicken, Sumac Skirt Steak, Falafel, Mixed Greens, Saffron Rice, Purple Cabbage, Persian Cucumbers, Hummus, Tahini Sauce, and Roti Spice), the Rainbow Veggie Bowl (Roasted Vegetables, Saffron Rice, Purple Cabbage, Grape Tomatoes, Feta, Pickled Onions, Citrus Vinaigrette, Garlic Sauce, and Roti Spice) and the Roasted Veggie Pita (Double Roasted Vegetables, Angel's Bakery Pita, Purple Cabbage, Chickpea Salad, Roasted Corn, Pita Chips, Roasted Red Pepper Sauce, Garlic Sauce, and Roti Spice). The food was delicious, fresh and exactly what we wanted. We're grateful for the hospitality! ## The summer season at Ravinia is underway… and there's no place more comfortable to see outdoor shows.
