Electric was The Cult's third studio album. The band recorded twelve new tracks for album to be tentatively called Peace. When they brought the album to legendary Hip-Hop producer, Rick Rubin, they decided to re-record the songs with Rub at the helm. What they came up with is a whole new sound for the band. Rubin took advantage of the band's talent and created a sound which would become their signature. The band went from goth rock to hard rock. A stripped down ACDC type of music led by charismatic frontman, Ian Astbury with his unique vocals, blistering guitar riffs by guitarist Billy Duffy and a rhythm section of Jamie Stewart on bass and Les Warner killing it on drums. The lyrics were written by Astbury & Duffy with the exception of the cover song. The album went to number 38 on US Billboard charts and eventually platinum. Songs like Wild Flower, Lil' Devil and Love Removal Machine have become rock radio staples and this album broke The Cult in the US and onto more mainstream success. Jamie runs Circle networks and he used to be a reluctant networker. Back in 2013 he had to go networking to find customers for his social media business. At the time most businesses were not on social media, so he had to go and find them. But he fell in love with networking and it took him on a long journey. Jamie says the business was providing social media for businesses that weren't using it at all. It was mainly Twitter. When Jamie started business he wanted to be able to do the school run. On that basis he never did breakfast networking. One of Jamie's clients pestered him for weeks and then he eventually went and enjoyed it and got some business. When he started networking he was offered training, which he thought he didn't need. Then Jamie eventually did some networking training. Using the training he moved from getting £18k of work in a year from networking to £88k a year. Jamie says we have all experienced just going networking and pottering along, but few of us think of training. His business also involved getting video testimonials which he enjoyed doing. That got busy and took him all over the country, which wasn't what he wanted to do. And people started to approach him for networking training, He eventually moved his business to doing that. He says it is around understanding what it is you really want. Jamie says before networking, he thought carefully about who he wanted to work with. He decided he wanted to work with a franchisee. His plan was to do excellent work with one franchisee, get referred to others. This worked well and in the end he also ended up working for the head office. All from doing a little planning before going networking.   Marcus thinks most people are just “winging it” in networking rather than planning. Jamie also says what you would wear to networking should be the same as what you would wear to meet a dream client. He says for Zoom meetings many people don't make any effort at all.  He also talks about what people see on the background of your Zoom calls. Marcus has some lighting which shows exactly what he does. Marcus also says he has made Zoom backgrounds that were slide shows of his work and people loved it at the networking events. Jamie's top networking tips 1. Prepare. Don't just jump from one call to another with no breaks and no planning. 2. Arrive early. You would never arrive late for an in person event so don't online 3. Go networking with one thing in mind. It might be you are looking for support, a recommendation, an accountant or anything else,  but go with one aim in mind. If you are going for referrals. Have one in mind and be crystal clear. Treat it like a marketing campaign. You could do it as simple as explain who your latest client is or your ideal client is. You want people in the room to be able to filter all the people they know down to one, who they will introduce them to. 4. Be proactive with referrals. Go out and find people to refer, don't just refer people you happen to come across. Jamie says for example while speaking to people he asked them if they had business insurance and then when it needed renewing. If the renewals were coming up he would pass them on to a connection who sold insurance.   Jamie has a photographer he works with on quarterly shoots. He says his face is his personal logo. Using photographs of ourselves is not showing off, it's personal branding. He also says that as he's used more professional photos he has found his social media reach expand. Most people though don't know the value they would get from professional photos. It is therefore important that photographers explain what value they deliver with a photoshoot.  So while networking talk about your clients and then the follow up is really important. Jamie said he made a decision to pass more referrals than ever before. And as a result of that he has been passed more referrals than ever before.

Can goats threaten your health if you're a pregnant woman? If you are a woman, there are some specific precautions you should be taking with goats giving birth and also when using drugs for synchronization.Dr. Jamie Stewart, Assistant Professor at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and a reproductive specialist, is talking about zoonotic diseases that are of special concern to pregnant women, including toxoplasmosis, chlamydia, campylobacter, brucellosis, and q-fever. We talk about wearing gloves, a face mask, and even eye protection to protect yourself from unexpected splashes of goat body fluids, which can contain infectious organisms that can threaten pregnancy and the unborn child. In addition to diseases, women of all reproductive stages can be affected by drugs like Lutalyse, Estrumate, and CIDRs when they come in contact with skin or mucus membranes. The potential for negative outcomes is much worse, however, for pregnant women. One of the things we forgot to mention in this episode is that you should never perform mouth-to-mouth on a newborn baby goat because of the risk of contracting a zoonotic disease, a topic that we did discuss in our episode on Infectious Causes of Abortions in goats. For more information, you can also check out our episodes on Zoonotic Diseases.See full show notes here >> https://thriftyhomesteader.com/goat-diseases-and-womens-health/To see the most recent episodes, visit  ForTheLoveOfGoats.comWant to support the content you love?Head over to -- https://thrifty-homesteader.ck.page/products/love-goats-tip-jarThanks for listening! No one ever said raising goats was easy, but it doesn't have to cost a fortune or drive you crazy! Have you ever had a goat get an udder even though you are 100% sure she has not been anywhere close to a buck so could not possibly be pregnant? Normally, goats have to go through pregnancy and have a baby before they produce milk, but it's not impossible for a doe to start making milk without getting pregnant.A precocious udder is one that fills up with milk even though the doe has not been bred. Most of these will just go away as mysteriously as they appeared with no intervention needed. However, that is not always the case.In this episode, we are talking to Dr. Jamie Stewart, Assistant Professor in Production Management Medicine at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, about what causes a precocious udder and what we should and should not do in managing it.See full show notes here >> https://thriftyhomesteader.com/precocious-udders-in-goats/To see the most recent episodes, visit  ForTheLoveOfGoats.comWant to support the content you love?Head over to -- https://thrifty-homesteader.ck.page/products/love-goats-tip-jarThanks for listening! No one ever said raising goats was easy, but it doesn't have to cost a fortune or drive you crazy! In the early 2000s, Jamie Stewart wanted to go to Vietnam. They brought a rubber baby doll with them to take photos while they were there. One of those photos became the cover for Xiu Xiu's excellent A Promise album. But, for this trip to happen in the first place, Jamie needed to raise some money. For 8 months before they left, they recorded as many punk and ska bands as they could (One of the bands was Short Round). This isn't the only time that Jamie has intersected with ska. Another band they recorded, Firme, lent them their horn section for the Knife Play record. One of their old 90s bands, IBOPA (Indestructible Beat Of Palo Alto), played with a lot of ska bands since they were a fun horn-driven band (Ska was an influence, but not a style they played). Another one of their bands, Ten In The Swear Jar, released a record on Asian Man Records, and Pitchfork made a point to talk about ska in the review, despite there being NO ska on the album. We talk about all of this with Jamie, and so much more. We discuss the time period when they worked at Streetlight Records, how they discovered ska and reggae on KPFK on Sundays, how their 2nd concert ever was Pato Banton and Tippa Irie, and how they briefly played bass in a dub band. They also tell us about the time GG Allin jumped on stage and demanded they "plays some blues." They tell us stories about The Cactus Club. They tell us why Deerhoof is an amazing band. We learn who Richard Snakedick is.  We discuss what it was like to perform a balloon solo as the opening act on AJJ's 2021 tour, and we find out why they once blurted out "Fred Flintstone's Lucius Dick." Plus, Jamie sings for us a Weird Al-style parody song they wrote when they were a teenager. Not only is a goat placenta very different from a human or horse placenta but how it functions is also different, as well as how it should be managed after birth. In this episode, we are talking to Dr. Jamie Stewart, Assistant Professor at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, about what the placenta does and how it functions in goats. Like all ruminant placentas, it is actually a big blanket of membranes and cotyledons, which is why it usually takes at least two hours after birth to be expelled but can take longer and is not cause for concern. We talk about what to do in case of retained placenta, including what does not work (although it is frequently attempted) and what you should never do because it will actually make the problem worse and could even cause death.See full show notes here >> https://thriftyhomesteader.com/goat-placenta/To see the most recent episodes, visit  ForTheLoveOfGoats.comThanks for listening! No one ever said raising goats was easy, but it doesn't have to cost a fortune or drive you crazy! Besides being Uncle Dave's stepson, Jamie was Sean's first childhood friend outside of the family, both recalling childhood escapades of cowboys in state patrol hats and makeshift guns; injuries that should have maimed and scarred but for the grace of God; Christmas of '89 when first guitars were gifted. A pictorial trip down musical memory lane with high school friends at Club CiraSomething in bands Twist of Fate, Slush Puppy, and Fat Baby Angels. More Sean and Jamie reminiscences of Stage-Crushing, Crowd-Surfing, Pit-Moshing Concert Tales of Horror and Fun. Uncle Dave's Tail of the Weak speaks to his fascination with art and how it was and still is a family obsession. One of the most common questions I get during kidding season is, "why was this kid born dead?" Unfortunately, I can't answer that question because there are dozens of possibilities, starting with a long list of possible infections that can cause abortions, stillbirths, and neonatal death. As I was planning this episode with Dr. Jamie Stewart, Assistant Professor in Production Management Medicine at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, I thought we'd discuss all the possible infectious causes of abortion, but when I opened just one veterinary textbook and looked at the possibilities, I realized there was no way we could cover all of them in a single episode.Dr. Stewart and I decided to cover the most common causes that she sees in practice, and I added the diseases that I get the most questions about. In this episode, we are talking about the causes, symptoms, and diagnoses of chlamydia, q-fever, campylobacter, toxoplasmosis, Cache Valley virus, the goat version of hairy shaker disease in lambs, blue tongue, brucellosis, mycoplasma, e. coli, and strep. We also cover transmission, prevention, and treatment. While some of these diseases will affect only a single goat, others can cause an abortion storm, affecting potentially every pregnant doe in your herd. This is why it is so important to get a proper diagnosis if you have more than one doe giving birth prematurely or to stillborn kids.See full show notes here >> https://thriftyhomesteader.com/miscarriages-in-goats/To see the most recent episodes, visit  ForTheLoveOfGoats.comThanks for listening! No one ever said raising goats was easy, but it doesn't have to cost a fortune or drive you crazy! Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast.   In this episode I'm talking to Jamie Stewart, business coach and one of the founders of Circle Networks.   During the next 50 minutes Jamie and I set out to get to the core of why some networking activity works whilst others don't. Jamie shares his journey from the corporate world to creating a business that supports his life's priorities, and how he's made the shift from anti-networker to the co-founder of a growing network.    In previous episodes I've often talked about the importance of building strong networks despite the fact that I walked away from my first ever networking event without even making it through the door.   Jamie openly admits that he resisted networking for a full four years before finally agreeing to give it a go and having his eyes opened to the potential. In his first year on the networking scene he made £18,000 in sales followed by £88,000 in his second year.    What made the difference? He learned how to “do networking” properly.   And now he's on a mission to help others leverage the power of their own networks; social, personal and professional, in order to successfully scale their businesses in a planned and purposeful way.    Jamie shares the secret to great networking, how to know when you're not networking in the right place, and why business networking has to start with YOU not your job title.    Throughout this episode we explore how our mindset and attitude affects the success we all have in our business, and finishes with an amazing offer for listeners.   If you enjoyed listening to this episode and would like to know more about Jamie you can contact him here on LinkedIn or visit the Circle Networks website.     If you're enjoying the Fail Forward podcasts, follow me on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or LinkedIn for all the latest on my mission to help business owners Fail Forward.    Facebook https://www.facebook.com/failforwardhenri LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/henri-ghijben-539132101/ TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@failforward12 Instagram https://www.instagram.com/henrighijben/

Folk-punk duo AJJ was playing Mama Buzz Cafe in Oakland when they were approached by a guy named Skylar Suorez who was angling for some free records. Skylar told the Phoenix group that he worked at Asian Man Records. The group was excited at the prospect of being on the same label that released groups like Ten In The Swear Jar, Shinobu and copious ska albums. Shortly after, Asian Man signed them. On this episode, we bring on Sean and Ben from AJJ and dissect their ska roots. Ben is a much bigger fan of the genre and even played some ska in an early band called Free Delivery. While Sean admits he clowned on ska in high school (The entire golf team at his school listened to Christian ska!). However, we find out that he sang lead vocals on the ska song "ABCs" (with Mike Park and Jeff Rosenstock). He also performed at an "In Defense of Ska" event at Sojo's Donuts in Mesa, Arizona, and told the audience he was "ska-adjacent." On today's episode, we talk about all of Ben's favorite 90s and 2 Tone ska bands, how AJJ and Blue Meanies are similar, which ska bands AJJ has played with, and which grocery store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, AJJ once did a show at. We also talk about AJJ's AV Club Undercover show where they mashed up songs by Talking Heads, Neil Young, Wheatus and more. We discuss Mike Park telling the group that they were too big for Asian Man--but no other label was interested in them, and we talk at length about Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu, who opened for AJJ last year. Some of the most popular songs from The Cult come from Sonic Temple, their fourth studio album.  They garnered some attention in 1985 when the single “She Sells Sanctuary” off their second album hit the US charts, and they had established a solid following as a “post punk” or “goth rock” band, but Sonic Temple would put them over the top with its more hard rock appeal. The band lineup for this album consisted of Ian Astbury on vocals and percussion, Billy Duffy on guitar, Jamie Stewart on bass and keyboards, and newcomer Mickey Curry on drums.  Prior to Curry, the band had relied on Eric Singer for the first demos, and Chris Taylor for second demos at the drums. While the critical reception was mixed with some considering the work too conventional, the commercial success was undeniable.  The album shot up to the top 10 in both the UK and the US, and was certified gold in the UK and platinum in the US.Creative differences would destabilize the group on their fifth studio album and the group would break up after 1998.  However several reunions took place over the years, and the group is back together as of 2022. Brian leads the discussion of this album.Sun KingAstbury and Duffy wrote this song, inspired by Louis XIV.  Known as the Sun King, Louis XIV is the French King who moved the royal court to Versailles.  The track is an explicitly masculine one.  “I'm a sun king, baby, let me take you by the hand.  Sun king, honey, we can rule across the land.”  Fire WomanThe first single from the album is this well known track.  As with all the tracks, Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy wrote this hit which peaked at number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks charts.  Astbury has stated that this is a universal symbol, an archetype of the femme fatale.Edie (Ciao Baby)Edie Sedgwick is the inspiration for this song.  Sedgwick was an actress and socialite who traveled in Andy Warhol's circles in 1960's New York.  Sedgwick lived fast and died young of a drug overdose.  She was 28 when she died.  Her last film was “Ciao! Manhattan.”  This is not the only song inspired by Sedgwick, as Bob Dylan's “Just Like a Woman” is supposedly inspired by Edie Sedgwick as well.Sweet Soul SisterThis track was written in Paris, inspired by the Americanization of European culture.  It was the fourth single released from the album.  The song observes the love/hate relationship that comes with both the attraction and resistance experienced as a response to American culture, particularly in France. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The main theme from the television series "Saturday Night Live" Mike Myers joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, and original cast member Gilda Radner died in this month in 1989. STAFF PICKS:So Alive by Love and Rockets Rob begins the staff picks with a group that sounds a bit like INXS.  This single is off the self-titled fourth album from Love and Rockets.  “You're legs are strong and you're so, so long, and you don't come from this town.”  The single made it to number 3 in the U.S., and was considered the number 1 modern rock song in the U.S. for 1989.Walkin' Shoes  by Tora ToraWayne features a rock-blues number from a group out of Memphis, Tennessee.  This underrated song made it to number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the sound reminds us of Motley Crue and Led Zeppelin.  The group won studio time in a Battle of the Bands contest.  Tora Tora is still recording as of 2022.Dreams In the Dark by BadlandsBruce's staff pick is a hair band formed by former Black Sabbath members Ray Gillen (vocals) and Eric Singer (drums), former Ozzy guitarist Jake E. Lee, and former Surgical Steel bass player Greg Chaisson.  After Lee was fired from Ozzy's band by Sharon Osborne, he was motivated to form this band.  As mentioned previously Eric Singer had a hand in the demos of The Cult's album, and would go on to join KISS. Good Thing by Fine Young CannibalsBrian  wraps up this week's staff picks with the second big hit from FYC's album, “The Raw & the Cooked.”  Fine Young Cannibals hail from Birmingham, England, formed in 1984 and disbanded in 1992.       COMEDY TRACK:Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child  by Mojo NixonThis boogie-woogie comedy track is a good example of the type of parody song for which Mojo Nixon is famous.
