Jacob Rosenberg had a front-row seat to some rad SF/Bay Area history. In this bonus episode, the filmmaker/storyteller shares some of that history, especially as it relates to his upcoming book, Right Before My Eyes. Jacob was born and raised in Palo Alto. He grew up in the Seventies and Eighties. His parents moved there from the East Coast and Midwest to raise kids in an environment that matched their liberal values more. He started skating in the Eighties and would visit Justin Herman Plaza/EMB in The City with his skateboard but also his camera. He was one of the first to capture the skateboarding going on at EMB who was a peer of the skaters he was documenting. He soon found enough success with photography that he dropped out of high school and moved to San Diego to do that work full-time. Two years or so later, he went to film school at Emerson College in Boston, where he met his mentor. That mentor passed away while Jacob was still in school, but he finished a movie that guy had been working on at the time of his death. After college, Jacob moved to Los Angeles, where he's lived ever since. At this point in the episode, I share with Jacob the draw that SF had on me from about age 12, thanks to skateboarding, Bones Brigade, and especially, Tommy Guerrero. I never got to visit The City when I skated, but it was always fresh in my imagination. Jacob then goes on a sidebar about Tommy. Jacob goes on to talk about the time frame covered in his book—1988 to 1998. His life changed at skate camp in the summer of 1988 (if my math is correct, this would be Jacob's last summer before high school). He met pro skateboarders that summer. Suddenly, unrelatedly, he was in Hawaii making a video for Hieroglypics. He cites 1988 as a pinnacle year for hip-hop. And he says that '91–'93 were the same for street skating. 1993 was also important for hip-hop. The conversation then shifts to what the two cultures—hip-hop and skateboarding—had in common. He cites his childhood hero, Chuck D. (who wrote the afterword for his book) who noted that members of both subcultures were disenfranchised youth who found a way to express themselves. Well-put. In the early Nineties, the dominance of ramp skating waned and gave way to street skating. With easier and more affordable access to video cameras, the scene got documented and documented well. Similarly, sampling and other recording equipment was getting cheaper and cheaper, and DIY hip-hop songs and videos flourished. And in a very specific way, a video that Jacob created and put Hieroglyphics' music in helped to unite the two groups in the Bay Area. Jacob says that his self-published book, Right Before My Eyes, is meant to be a coffee table book. He intends for people to see the world he was documenting all those years ago through his eyes. There are photos, of course, but the book also contains screengrabs from videos he made as well as ephemera from that time—stuff like photos of photos, the cameras he used to shoot, and more. Follow Jacob Rosenberg on Instagram to see his work. And visit Jacob's website to buy Right Before My Eyes, available now. What communities are you part of? What does being involved in community mean for your life? Those are two of the core questions in this episode of Sunday Sanctuary. Whether we see ourselves as being community members or not, the different groups we are part of influence how we live our lives. Community connections lead to both of the interviews for this episode. First up, Petra sat down to talk with Dr Hirini Kaa, principal of Tāmaki Makaurau's St John's Theological College. Dr Kaa shared his views on what community means to him as a Māori man and how mana plays a role. Petra's second conversation is with Jenny Duckworth, someone who has lived in several communities all with a very intentional focus on serving their neighbours. This episode also sees Producer Sam head back to Cornwall Park here in Auckland to ask unsuspecting strangers about their stories of community. He also tries to bring a theme song to the episode, with mixed success..... Haere mai! Music: - Come Together by The Beatles - Interlude by Julie Byrne (played during contemplative practice)- Alegria by Elia y Elizabeth (played during community life)- Everyday People by Sly and the Family Stone- Oh My God by Kevin Morby (played at the end of Jenny's interview)- Sun Rays Like Stilts by Tommy Guerrero (played during the benediction)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As a kid in San Francisco, Tommy Guerrero would stand on his skateboard, sliding down the steep hills of San Francisco slalom style. He'd dodge the dangerous objects in traffic and aim for the lips of the driveways he'd pass, going off them in attempts to catch air. This skillset allowed him to win contests, have his own signature board, and turn pro before he could legally buy a beer. Instead, that first check from being signed as a professional skater, was spent on a four track recorder and a drum machine so he could make music. Skating is where Tommy earned his name as a teenager. Now, as an adult, he still skates but it's more of just a kick and push on smooth pavement in the park, with an occasional ollie here and there. It's the investment he made in his music career that is paying dividends. For over two decades Tommy has been producing Lo-Fi, boom-bap, jazzy, hip-hop, instrumental music where he plays every instrument. His music is cerebral, and his songs have titles that he pulls out of the ether. He's tuned in to the cosmos, as well as the popular trend of listening to vibey sounds. Plus, he's a dad, so it helps that he's tapped into the culture. Tune in this week as we discuss music, skating, San Francisco culture, and Tommy's philosophies on fatherhood.

I decided to take some of the Latin guitar sounds found in my Guitarissimo mixes, tilt them slight off kilter and give the mix a slightly sinister vibe.  It's not too dark, and some of it is kinda of fun, just the way Halloween should be. There are a few artists I was familiar with or have played before like David Lynch, SUSS, The Phonometrician, Shakey Graves, Ry Cooder, and Tommy Guerrero. As a kid, he was full of energy and always moving, playing soccer & basketball among other sports. This week Susan and Michaela sit down with native San Franciscan Marc Capelle to talk about his artistic career and the city's sunny Mission District. A musician, composer, producer, educator and entertainer, Capelle has performed with the American Music Club, Tommy Guerrero and The West Coast Spiritual Corinthians for decades. He's even had guest performances with artists like The Plastic Ono Band, Rodriguez, Grandaddy, and Kelley Stoltz. Capelle founded SFO's live music program “ You Are Hear,” and remained the programmer and producer of it for nine years. Likewise, Capelle is the founder and musical director of the Red Room Orchestra and the soul and pop dance ensemble Marc & the Casuals. He studied at Columbia College at Columbia University, and since returning to his home city, Capelle has taken advantage of the deep concentration of arts and music that the city offers. Such concentration of the arts can be found in Capelle's own neighborhood, The Mission. In the mid 20th Century, artists and musicians flocked to The Mission to find affordable housing, thus spawning an explosion of creativity that spilled out of every bar and restaurant. Its cultural history fueled the district's colorful character, first by its inhabitance of the city's Native American population, to the Irish, and now to the cherished Latinx community. Today, not only is the neighborhood dominated by an abundance of the arts, but the food, music, and culture has a vibrant Mexican and Latinx flare. There was even a time when Spanish could be heard more than English on the neighborhood's streets. The Mission has had its fair share of challenges, such as increased gang violence in the 80's and rising costs from the growing tech industry of the last 20 years. Nevertheless, it maintains its lively artistic spirit, and who better to tell its story than Mission musician Marc Capelle, who can be found making music on The Mission's streets or at various venues like The Chapel on Valencia St. Check out Capelle's compositions and sound design in the Bay Area art scene documentary “Tell Them We Were Here,” or read more about him on the local news website Mission Local: https://missionlocal.org/2021/06/people-we-meet-a-san-francisco-musician-who-never-left/ Meet Marc Capelle!

Welcome to the 14 Things You Didn't Know Skateboarding podcast, where in this episode, we dive into 14 Things You Didn't Know About Powell Peralta skateboards. It all begin with George Powell in his garage, making homemade skateboards for his son in the 70's. George, an aeronautics engineer, had a knack for innovation, and loved tinkering with new ideas for making everyday things better. It wasn't long before he connected with Stacy Peralta, a pro skateboarder who had a special talent for marketing. The match was made in heaven, and the brand began growing in popularity, recruiting a team of underdogs and misfits, who would become the infamous bones brigade; Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike Mcgill, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen, and Tommy Guerrero. The team topped the competition podiums for years, and released a number of industry-leading skateboard films which have now become timeless icons of skateboarding culture. However, great success can have a dark side, as Stacy and George began to argue about the future of the company; Stacy wanted to see the team disperse to start new small companies, whereas George saw this as foolish. Eventually parting ways and bringing the company temporarily to a close, Bones Brigade members parted ways to make many of the iconic brands of today: Lance started the firm, Tony started Birdhouse, Tommy started Real, and Rodney started world industries with Mike Vallely and Steve Rocco. Today, Powell Peralta continues to be an industry leader, pioneering new technologies within skateboarding; particularly with the creation of the flight deck, and Bones Swiss Bearings. Losing your mind with Chris Cosentino

As a kid growing up in New England I looked to the Bones Brigade & Tommy Guerrero for direction in skating. When the video Bones Brigade came out we were all hooked on this group of skaters doing what they did best having fun riding their skateboards.

The Mattson 2 and Emma-Jean Thackray (with Hillary Donnell) Keeping the fresh and bold at the forefront, and our hats off to the legends, The Mattson 2 have been making waves with their dreamy guitar and drum-based music for awhile. Rather than try and describe their sound, just looking at their frequent collaborators speaks volumes; Ray Barbee, Money Mark, Toro Y Moi, and Tommy Guerrero to name a few. With the brothers Mattson's latest take on one of music's most sacred cows, they may have topped themselves (as well as rattled a few cages). That's right, they've gone for John Coltrane and, wait for it... his masterwork A Love Supreme! The Mattson 2 really give it a piece of their creative minds, building a lush adventure and done with loving respect, in a way Coltrane would have given thumbs up to.   One of the most compelling composers working today takes cues not only from the jazz masters, but from the dancefloor and the English tradition of Collier brass bands. That artists name is Emma Jean Thackray. She's one of the shining stars of the jazz-not-jazz renaissance that's currently happening. She'll make you don your thinking cap, get you out of your seat and onto your feet! Major Scale contributor Hillary Donnell returns with a friendly chat she and Thackray had recently.  ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. For the curious, and lovers of music who like the details in between. The Major Scale raises a glass to Tommy Guerrero, a multi-disiplined, multikulti cultural icon.    Guerrero's first blip on the radar was as a pro-skater with Powell Peralta's legendary Bones Brigade. Yet music was always a constant in his life, and as time went on it quickly rose to the forefront. Through the trajectory of skate culture he traveled the worlds of Hip-Hop, D.I.Y. punk, electronica, world beat, and the vibrant visual arts, all culminating in an impressive body of work that he describes as, ".....breakbeat, noir, spaghetti western, surf soundtracks".   What he can do with a guitar, a four track, and a sampler has attracted some of the best collaborators of our time to him. Guerrero's sound is rooted somewhere in-between Gabor Szabo, with the post-modern ethics of Durutti Column – he's a must for curious eardrums.
