This week, Brendan B. Brown of Wheatus sits in to discuss the writing and recording of the band's 2003 single "Lemonade," a fan-favorite song that blends raw emotion with undeniable hooks. He and Chris explore the song's evolution, from its themes of jealousy and heartbreak to the production choices that gave it its signature sound—including why Brendan spent an outrageous amount of time and effort perfecting the bell sounds. We caught up with Wheatus frontman Brendan B. Brown on the 25th anniversary of Teenage Dirtbag! He’s celebrating in Sydney, and we chat about Aussie crowds, touring with his wife, and whether “dirtbag” is part of his everyday vocab. Oh, and we may or may not have belted out the full song (badly) behind the scenes… and Brendan wants the footage. Should we send it?!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We’re throwing it back 25 years with a nostalgic deep dive into the biggest songs and moments from the year 2000. Plus, we chat with Wheatus about Teenage Dirtbag turning 25—yes, we sang it, and yes, it was bad. In the Glossys, we cover the FireAid benefit concert in LA. Then, things take a turn—would you rub men's underarm sweat on your lips for relaxation? A study says you should. Also, a UK woman is convicted in Britain’s first “cyber-farting” case (yes, really), and science confirms pasta makes people happy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week we jump back to the 1990s to hear the story of The JudyBats with frontman Jeff Heiskell. This band has an incredible catalog and they reached the charts so you will probably recall a track or two of theirs if you were in your teens or 20s at that time. Or you might be a raving fan and can't wait to hear more about them. And if you don't know their music at all, well...I'm kinda jealous, because you're about to find your next favorite band, just 3 decades later. The JudyBats were founded when Jeff Heiskell and Ed Winters were playing together and heard a neighbors house playing music as well and ran in to the group of Tim Stutz, Johnny Shugrue and Terry Casper at a local bar in Knoxville, TN and agreed to start playing together. They added Peggy Hambright and the took off as The JudyBats, finding success locally pretty quickly, then getting signed to Sire Records. The first track they released was for a tribute album the label was putting out, and it found immediate success too.I've really enjoyed the fact that we've been able to bring on bands and musicians from the 90s to share their stories and their music. These are people who I was a massive fan of and never thought I'd get to speak with at all, let alone in some kind of legitimate capacity. I enjoy bringing on the likes of The Samples, Wheatus, Tripping Daisy and this week's guest The JudyBats as their music is all so good it is still relevant today and worth your time. It doesn't matter when good music was written and released, if it's awesome and you haven't discovered it yet, then that's all that matters. Plus, with these bands, we get the complete picture of what it's like to find success, and then see it flicker and go out, which allows us to learn more about those aspects of the music industry and the story arc of the career. It's certainly not all fun times and glamorous. And each of these have pushed through and continuing to create and perform, either under a new name and evolution, or still carrying the flag and moniker of the original. Jeff now releases music under the title Heiskell and it is very good. We wrap things by learning more about that and share a song or two.So let's enjoy this insightful chat with Jeff Heiskell of The JudyBats as he's got great stories to tell! And hope you enjoy the music whether you already knew them or if they're new to you. Thanks for listening! And big thanks to Dan Drago of 25 O'Clock Pod for joining on this one, as he was a fan of The JudyBats while listening to them on WBER from Joey Guisto, who helped me Text us your thoughts on this episode, and who should be OUR #NextFavBand...As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". Wheatus have been here that many times they would almost be classed as Australians. After a whirlwind 2024 that saw the band Down Under twice, once in February for acoustic shows with Art from Everclear and again with Wheatus in April for the Pandemonium Festival, frontman Brendan B Brown has become a beloved fixture in the Aussie music scene. The Wheatus sets at Pandemonium were one of the standout moments of the day, finding that perfect balance between stoking the fires of nostalgia and putting on a killer rock 'n' roll show. The Wheatus Acoustic Tour next January and February is shaping up to be the most fun you can have indoors this summer. Featuring Wheatus frontman and incredibly nice guy, Brendan B. Brown along with his better half, fellow Wheatus member Gabrielle Sterbenz, the epic 14 date run also features founding member and former lead guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist of The Chats, Josh ‘Pricey' Price.HEAVY spent some time with Brendan recently, where we spoke about just about everything.Brendan shared that Australia was the first place to embrace Wheatus' music, especially the song Teenage Dirtbag, and that they were grateful for the support they received there. We discussed his approach to music and live performances, emphasizing the importance of connecting with the audience and not taking himself too seriously. He explained his method of tailoring each show to the audience's mood and requests, which he finds more engaging than a set list. Brendan also shared his experiences with touring and maintaining a positive band dynamic, highlighting the importance of respect and camaraderie among band members. He expressed his excitement for an upcoming acoustic show, where he and his partner Gabrielle will share stories and play songs from their catalogue and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Relive one of the biggest 2000s one hit wonders on this episode of Ranking Tracks!
Send us a textWheatus, the alternative rock band best known for their hit single "Teenage Dirtbag," continues to make waves in the music scene over two decades after their initial rise to fame. Formed in 1995 by Brendan B. Brown in Northport, New York, Wheatus captured the spirit of teenage angst and rebelliousness with "Teenage Dirtbag," a song that has since become an anthem for countless fans worldwide. The track, with its catchy chorus and relatable lyrics, skyrocketed the band to international success in 2000, earning them a permanent place in pop culture.Despite the ever-changing landscape of the music industry, Wheatus has managed to maintain a loyal fan base and remain active, thanks in part to their commitment to evolving their sound while staying true to their roots. Recycling or trash? It's a question you may have asked yourself when faced with a gross can, a heavily-stickered art project, or some weird plastic thing. The Elder are in flower. The sun casts a golden hue over clusters of white petals. White-gold bouquets dabbed across the green canvas. Nestled between the wall of trees at the back and the gathering of raspberry stems at the front lies the sanctuary of the shed. Inside, Lucy and Arun of 'Girl Like That' perform a collection of stripped back songs from the brilliant new album - Medicine Box. Lucy's voice is superb and rides majestically upon the magical sounds gliding from Arun's guitar (well Lucy's). There's also a sneaky foray into Wheatus' Teenage Dirtbag. I met up with my friend Jace Miller at Silk City on Spring Garden St. for this latest episode of TatD. A revered Philly diner - a little more on the upscale side than your typical greasy spoon - Silk City has vibe to spare. It's also a spot that hosts full-on rock shows and other eclectic musical events in its back room. You could hear someone sound checking for a show around the time we sat down to catch up on a Wednesday at 5:30 - that no-man's land between the end of the afternoon and the beginning of the evening. Over a beef short rib grilled cheese (me) and a meatball salad special (him), we got into all kinds of topics from the panic of thinking your cat ran out the front door during a washing machine delivery, to tales of sadly departed former bosses in the concert booking industry (RIP Bryan Dilworth), to realizing your band sounds better with fewer people in it.Since the early aughts, Jace has been the frontman and band leader of Alright Junior, one of Philly's most consistent alt-rock juggernauts. The band has an impressive tenure as well as an impressive resume of prestigious opening gigs, having shared stages with Incubus, Toadies, Young The Giant, Cake, and many more. Their own brand of 90's infused rock has never gone out of favor, and they deliver it with impressive precision both live and on record.Catch Alright Junior at Brainfest on May 25, 2024 at Broken Goblet Brewing. Wheatus will be headlining the show and all proceeds benefit the American Brain Tumor Association.I hope you enjoy this fun diner convo!~ JKF ❤️

We're back with another red hot episode this week. Kush is currently MIA, presumably too busy worshipping his life size poster of Christopher Nolan at home. In other news, the boys discuss the world's worst immersive experience - Willy's Chocolate Experience in Glasgow. Ro then tells a tragic tale of his friend meeting his hero Wheatus, including some very suspect behaviour. Finally we end with our final frisbee update including a very interesting twist in the tale.We play a new Tik Tok famous game this week called “Avoid Me". Straightforward premise, Miguel has prepared some prompts beforehand which he presents to Ro and Sen. They must then answer those prompts without giving the same answers Miguel had already prepared. We end with “Pet Peeves” except with a twist! We've been getting a bit too negative about Sydney on the podcast so instead we asked you to write in with what you love about this great city. We got plenty of very good answers (and sarcastic ones) that we go through and discuss to see if we agree.___________________________________________________________FULL PODCAST EPISODES

The 2023 holiday season has arrived! We're celebrating with some brand new holiday songs. Since Hanukkah begins this week, we begin with the delightfuly catchy "Just A Little Hanukkah" by Oliver Richman featuring Jessica Toltzis and Nathan Brewer. Then we consider the new Christmas release by Wheatus (remember Wheatus?), titled "Christmas Dirtbag" (now you probably remember Wheatus). The ranking music in this episode is "Hanukkah" by The Manischefits.
Join hosts Ed Voccola (Rick and Morty, Bless The Harts) and Chris Cullari (Blumhouse, The Aviary) for a wild trip through the world of what scares them. In Part 2, the boys discuss the wild story of the McMartin Preschool case and - in what they're calling “a podcast exclusive!” - examine an actual police training document designed to help parents and teachers seek out the Satanists in their midst. Plus: a look into how the song "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus wouldn't exist without a satanic panic. Visit this episode's show notes for links and references.
This week, Brooke goes down a mostly escapist route, summing up some of the moments dominating the pop culture airwaves, from AI bringing The Beatles back together and Home Depot's viral, and polarizing, Christmas Tree (yes, it's already that time of year), to yet another reincarnation of Wheatus' “Teenage Dirtbag.” And we end on the campuses of Mormon schools like BYU, where the students have some pretty dark responses to “would you rather” questions. It's short and sweet one this week! A hugely successful song proves polarizing, and an artful cover only makes the discussion more complicated. Probably because of Satanists. Teenage Dirtbag, originally by Wheatus, covered by Phoebe Bridgers. Outro music is Run To The Hills, by Iron Maiden, baby.
Today, this is what's important: Kyle is back, Adam's feet, new dictionary additions, Wheatus, Seekr, Elizabeth Holmes, walkie-talkie talk, Adam's groin issues, McDonalds, The Lonely Island, Gallagher, and more. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
