Skate Podcast
What's up, skaters?! Welcome back to another full episode of Vent City. On today's show we have the author Kyle Beachy, the caption writer Ted Schmitz, professional skater Ryan Lay and one of the sickest skaters on the planet Arin! Did you know she had no intentions of getting into the sponsored game? Maybe! Did you know she worked in a lab processing COVID samples? Probably not, but maybe you did. But you certainly won't know everything we talk about in this fantastic interview, so put on some headphones and enjoy. What's up, Youtube, meet our friends, skaters. Today on the show we have skater and Climate reporter Noah Gallagher Shannon talking with Kyle Beachy, Ryan Lay, and resident skeptic/show-note author Ted Schmitz about why the planet is fine and all good. Actually, the groundwater is getting sucked out then shipped to Saudi Arabia, the storms in South America are scarier and worse than ever, and nobody knows if skateboarding is bad for the planet or not. Read the chat then listen to Noah's articles we talk about here: What's Going on Inside the Fearsome Thunderstorms of Córdoba Province? https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/07/22/magazine/worst-storms-argentina.html Water Wars of Arizona https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/19/magazine/the-water-wars-of-arizona.html lol, I just remembered Noah has, like, all these prestigious awards for journalism, and we talked to him like he was just a guy who knew a couple facts about clouds. Whoops. Well, you'll get something out of it and then you'll stop flying, stop driving, stop buying premade meals at Starbucks and stop talking about Elijah and Austyn. The just life awaits. What's up skaters?! We are back with another episode of VC from VBC. That's right, everyone's favorite Una Farrar joins the cast to talk about her career, her role in Canadian Olympics and some strange dreams from early in her skate journey. Actually it wasn't a dream, Ryan really did do a demo with the Featch and Ipath in 2011. What else do you need to know? It's funny and fun and you're going to learn something and you'll be a more committed partner, a better parent or sibling and you'll finally start doing switch flips right. All you have to do is listen to us for an hour. Sold. What's up, skaters?! Welcome back to another episode of Vent City. Logging on to talk all the good and the bad from 2021, we got Kristin Ebeling, Ryan Lay, Ted Barrow and Ted Schmitz. Is it really easy to forget what happened last year? Yes. Did we remember and catalog everything that was noteworthy? Also, yes—no exceptions. We get into the good stuff with skate parts from our favorite people like Max Wheeler, Jacopo Carozzi and Breana Geering. Then the bad stuff like NFTs and the fact that we are stuck in the slow decline of a dying empire! Maybe not that last part, but it's still true. And of course, the question on everyone's mind: Is Cariuma going to save the planet? No. But luckily, skating with the people you love is still pretty much the coolest thing. Listen to this show and if you disagree with any points we bring up on the episode, talk to your folks about it. What's up skater?! We are back with another episode of Vent City with Ted S, Ted B, Ryan L and our guest Gifted H. We're hoping in the expensive stretchy car without U. That's right we're talkin' Limosine's "Paymaster" vid and what even a "small board brand" is? Hint: It's Primitive. Also, how do you pronounce "Ventura," the city in California. Thank you all for listening. And thank you to these fine folks that help the waveforms flowing. Skaters, we're back over on the Patreon, 'cause we figured out how to press record on Zoom. Ryan and Ted (not Barrow) talk with Kyle about his trip to Croatia to read at the Vladimir Film Festival. What's Up, Skaters?! Goddamn, got some cobwebs to brush off, but we do it in style with the first-ever FULL-CAST episode about everyone's favorite topic: The 2020 Tokyo Summer Games. You know what is going on. Listen to it, spam the DMs with how bad the takes are. Get blocked. Go out and skate. See us at the spot. Get ignored. Go back into the DMs and apologize. And look at that, we're friends again. Did the olympics go well? Do they even deserve a capital letter when typed aloud? We discuss the judging, the strange difference in quality viewing between the men's and women's events (spoiler: the dudes suck) and the beauty of Cab back lips. Update: Candy is out of jail. Which kinda sounds like a line from that song Candy Jail. Listen up, have fun and drop a Cab back lip of your own. We love you and we'll be back soon now that the writer of these here notes has settled into his new permanent residence. What do we say at the beginning of these things again? Oh yeah, WHAT'S UP, Skaters?! On this episode we discuss the skateboarding film Lords of Dogtown (no Z). Kyle Beachy (book author), Ted Schmitz (show notes author), and Tim Ward (not at all an author, but he's on another podcast, so that counts for something?) look at the the general failing of skate films by taking apart the characters and story presented in this strange studio feature. How it got made, we may never know, but maybe there was a market maybe? If you liked the film, that's fine; it's good to have joy where you can. We, however, did not enjoy it. And you can hear all about it. We don't really do the timecode thing, but maybe it'll help guide you through this one: 00:00:00 - Cold Open (we do these instead of skits because, the skits weren't funny and they took too long) 00:00:30 - Cold open ends and we hear a nice intro song by Roar 00:01:00 - Introducing the podcast cast 00:04:00 - Introducing the film cast. It's not looking good 00:05:00 - Start talking about the movie. Bummer 00:05:30 - Nothing improves, massive problems exposed 00:05:31 — 01:03:00 - The bad things are discussed 01:08:25 - Tim brings up a trick challenge That's basically it.
What 's up, skaters? In this episode we have the ling-awaited return of Ted Barrow along with an esteemed cast of regulars (Alex White, Kyle Beachy and Ted Schmitz) and the auteur of the Upper West Side Curb Club Gregory Navarro. Skaters, Holy shit. What is up? Bizarre times. Where are the days going? Anyways, I'm gonna keep these notes extra short 'cause putting much thought into things these days seems to take about 50 times longer than usual. Oh damn, you noticed we already published #34 and this is #33? That's 'cause we recorded this conversation with the wonderful Trevor Thompson before our Ashly episode. Who cares about a number anyways? Trevor's is 100-percent the best skater from Connecticut who also lived in Florida and also frequently goes to St. Louis but lives in LA and isn't all that fond of skating in LA. He likes to stay low to the ground and says switch flip manuals just make sense. Whatever the fuck that means? Got two more already recorded and on the way. Thanks for your love, everyone. What's up, skaters? It would be nice if there would be a rebuttal after that YouTubey "What's Up" greeting. It's very isolating, like having a conversation with your own canyon echo. Damn. This is getting off to a weird start. Let's get a do over. Welcome back to another episode of Vent City!!! Too much? Shit. Whatever. We've got a hell of a sincere show here with our incredible guest Ashley Rehfeld who helped us break into this business of mental health crises in skating. Sadly, being a skater doesn't make you immune to depression, or really anything else. So Kristin Ebeling, Alex White, Ryan Lay, and the author of these show notes talk about our individual experiences with mental stuff and what our journey through therapy has looked like. Are hotlines helpful? Maybe. They also might be an extension of the carceral apparatus. You won't get any hard answers, but you will get a few tools, options (openpathcollective.org), and insights into daily practices that help you feel like waking up is alright. Okay, I'm done now. you don't even fuckin' read this far down. Scroll down to see the trick challenge and the people off mic that help us out. What's up, skaters?! Here we have another skateboarding and current events discussion in light of the episode at the Capitol. We do a little talk about how we felt watching the coverage, and look into the ways life lessons from skateboarding are used in icky ways by right-wingy goofballs like Tim Pool and Jordan Peterson. Does skateboarding reinforce the popular virtues of Individualism by making you solely responsible for your own success and failure? Or do the bootstrappers miss the point that if anything from skating is really important to your wellbeing, it's that it plugs you into a communal, collective effort of fun having? That sentence was probably poorly written. Who cares, you know what I'm saying. Join Ted Schmitz—the author of these show notes and weird third-person-voice user—Kristin Ebeling, Ryan Lay, and returning guest Alan Gomez as they discuss the intersection of right wing grifters and skating. Oh yeah, we also talk about our favorite silly skate moments of 2020. This shit's fun but maybe don't play it around your kids, 'cause we say the fuckin' eff word a few times. I'm not gonna link to the videos we talk about. You can look em up if you're a real sicko. For a VERY good piece about the things we talk about, please read Hanson O'Haver's article on the Baffler. What's up, skaters?! Today on Vent City we've got three regulars and a guest! You already know Kristin Ebeling, Ryan Lay, and Alex White. And actually you might already know our guest Marbie Miller who is a full-time skater for There Skateboards and many other fine companies. Anyway, we had the privilege and the pleasure to talk with Marbie and her little scene growing up in Iowa and of course the slightly bigger scene in Wisconsin. "Stay Gold" premiere stories? Yeah, they're in there. What about getting jacked with Jeff from There? Yep, we talk about it too. Oh, and we play SOTY and the SHOTY (Skate Hottie Of The Year). And this was recorded before the Mason news, so if you have something to say about that, maybe don't? Or do. I don't really give a shit, but it would be cooler if you didn't. What's up, skaters? You've heard the name Mason Silva a lot this year. And you probably have accidentally called him Miles once or twice. Lucky for us we put a voice to the face that birthed a part for every season this year. It was fun. We talked about whether or not AVE's DC part is his worst part. I, Ted Schmitz, say it is, and since I get to write the show notes, let's just go ahead and say the official position of the show that it is. Mason disagrees, but what does he know?! We also learn the correct pronunciation of the perineum, which is important to know probably. This kinda knowledge is important goddamnit. Thank you again for listening! What's up, skaters?! On this episode we are joined by the phenomenal Jessie Van Roechoudt! Alex White kicks off the show with fellow adult skaters Ted Barrow, Ryan Lay and Ted Schmitz (also the one who writes these notes). Jessie has had a unique career as a '90s pro for Rookie, Silicon Valley designer and now as a director at adidas skateboarding. She's seen skateboarding from a vantage point unlike anyone else and this interview is good for anyone with a brain. Also, maybe plants like this show too, but I don't even know how to figure that out. Seems like a waste of time. Just listen to it and tell your fuckin' friends that own brains to do it. I guess dogs have brains too and might not get a kick out of this. It's really hard to pinpoint exactly who this show is for, but it's really good and Jessie's words should be heard by every skater. Probably better to say it's for skaters than just brain-havers. Anyway, listen and then do a nollie 5-0. Jessie says to leave the trick challenge open so technically backside counts, but honestly, I think you should do a frontside one. Or do a backside one and be intentionally snarky about it. That's fun too. We hope you're doing well. And we love you all for listening, except the kooks who listen to talk shit on the show. You guys are fucking assholes. Don't be a shitty, and we'll love you again. Skaters, Ted Schmitz here with a short miniature episode in dedication to Keith Hufnagel. Here I look at the way in which some Huf's canon and the music in it went on to have some very good real-world impacts. I also reflect on how his legacy can help us with further appreciate the people who are still with us. We of course encourage you to take a second to consider the ways your life has changed by developing interests in tandem with skating as well. Of course, also go back to relive all the goodness Huf has left us with. We are better off for having him while we did. Intro and Credits: "Explosions of Birds" by Roar (feat. Hello Skaters, Are you feeling remotely human? We hope so, but we understand if your sense of humanness is off-kilter. Rather than talking about world-collapsing forces like the unchecked advance of razor-toothed, bloodthirsty capitalists or a pretty good Antihero video, we at Vent City thought our time with you would be better spent conceptualizing a utopia. Yes, Professor—and man I once described on the Thrasher site as “firebrand novelist”—Kyle Beachy leads a discussion with Kristin Ebeling, Ted Barrow and Ted Schmitz about THE PERFECT SKATE SPOT. And if you are reading this before listening, I encourage you to take a moment to think of your immaculate plaza or parking lot or whatever. And then answer this question: Why are you reading the show notes before listening? You’re weird. Though the panel differs slightly on what ideal sessions would look like and what players would constitute the perfect crew, one thing emerges as absolutely true—you must do a frontside noseslide for the trick challenge. Do it, or die trying. Actually, it’s not not worth dying over…maybe not even worth getting sweaty over. But it might be fun and we hope to share that experience of fun. Nothing gets set ablaze on that beautiful future-banning bonfire which we have come to know and love as the Funeral Pyre segment, because this is a rare exercise in building up a brightly reimagined skateboarding. As always, whatever I, the latter Ted, said on the show is probably wrong but I get to write the notes so I’ll leave you with the answer to the perfect spot. It’s that 20 stair in DC that Bobby tried to ollie. As always! What's up, skaters?! Here is about a third of Ted Schmitz and Ryan Lay's conversation with Vans Footwear Design Director of the Skate Category Neal Shoemaker. Neal's an old friend of ours and we had an awesome time talking about the process of how pro shoes make it from the design room to the shop shelf. We also talk about the best skate shoe of all time—The Vans Slip-on Pro (don't listen to the other people on this show when they gas up the Blazers). Oh, also I think the Slip-On talk is behind the paywall. Whatever. Have a listen and if you're interested in pursuing something in footwear and design in skating. What's up, skaters?! Welcome back to another Vent City. On the show, we have Kristin Ebeling, Kyle Beachy, Ted Schmitz and Ryan Lay talking about the thing we all know and love—song choices in video parts! Yes, it's true. This is not just a full hour of pants banter and meandering discussions on proper skatepark design. We already did that, I think. This time we take a look at Tiago's new New Balance Numeric part called something like "A trustable fellow with sick-ass running shoes." Is it his best part ever? You'll have to listen to find out if we think so. But also, no, it's not. It's fine. There are some weird effects and song choices that we talk about though and it's really fun. Also, there is some talk of Beagle's My War that you might've watched. It's fun, you should. Unless you have better things to do, in which case just imagine what it would be like and have us drown your thoughts out with our criticism. Honestly, we're not telling you how to live your life, most of the time. What items from skateboarding get thrown onto the funeral pyre, never to emerge in skating ever again? Well we don't have the power to make that happen but we have a fun time goofing on Qanon skaters, non-skate journalism, Tony Hawk's agent and something that Ryan said but I can't remember right now. Anyways, we hope you like this, and if you don't maybe take out your frustration with the show by organizing a food drive in your area. So that's mostly it. What’s up, skaters?! Welcome back to Vent City. There will be a mandatory 14-day podcast quarantine for any listeners coming to the show for the first time, where you will have to listen to every single episode across a two-week period all alone in your room. Honestly, it’s a fate worse than death, but we don’t make the rules. On today’s episode we have three relatively isolated individuals attempting to connect over their lifelong time-wasting passion. They are Ted Schmitz—who writes these notes in third person like a complete narcissist that really needs the attention—along with Ted Barrow from his writer’s lodge in Berkely (sp?), Californ-i-yay, and professional anti-popsicle-stick rider Ryan Lay. Where are the rest of the people on the show? Good question. Send them all DMs and demand they get re-edited into this ep. Or leave them alone cause they’re fucking busy and need to do their jobs well without your nonsense. We are discussing the return of two absolute KINGS, Brandon Turner and Stevie Williams…wait, actually THREE KINGS including THE YOSHE! That’s right this episode has a full fifteen minute appreciation of Yoshi Tenninbomb (sp?). VC is the only skateboarding podcast willing to dedicate this much time to the Virginian treasure. Why not spend the time talking about Bobby Worrest instead? Because, although he is a fine skater, let’s be honest, he is the Waluigi to Yoshi’s…well…Yoshi. Does the rest of the cast co-sign this message? Probably not, but they don’t write the show notes. With that said we also investigate what one skate pundit has coined “Good Guy” Syndrome that might be—but probably isn’t—the leading cause of burnout among technically proficient adult skaters. Anyway, that’s just to say a lot of people have had the sponsor ladder be the carrot in front of their stick stick for so long they really don’t know what to do with themselves once they lose their early-twenties bag. Without getting too preachy about it (although the episode is basically a masterclass on how to do the skate sermon right [this phrase should not be confused with whatever the fuck Brian Sumner does]) it's pretty cool to be oky with getting worse. And finally there is an out-of-time, off-key ode to our forepodcasters where, like, half the shoutouts were accomplished, leading to a straight-up reading of every name on the list of our Pro-flow Patreon tier. What is up, all you skaters?! Welcome back to another FANTASTIC episode of Vent City, where we talk about bullshit skating, or something like that. You might be thinking, "Didn't I just hear this guy on the Bunt?" Your thoughts are correct, dear listener. But I address that right off the bat in the intro to the show, so you don't need that explained again here. We'll just say that you should listen to their ep with Cairo as well because there is a lot of stuff that doesn't overlap and hearing his retelling of the California Street gap shit is amazing. Also he forgot that Justin Brock three flipped it, which is pretty funny. Some context for today's dicsussion: Ryan Lay and Cairo Foster were teammates on enjoi very briefly, and their friendship has maintained since both have moved to other positions in the skate world. They are both also adults who have navigated the intersection of being a grown up and pro with varying degrees of grace, and they both skated to Built To Spill (which we talk about here because it's very fun to talk about being a grown up and music that is good). We also start with Popwar bracelet talk for some reason. This was a really fun interview and we hope you enjoi it. See what I did there? Also, here's a thing that only a few copy editors know: The brand enjoi prefers to be written all lowercase. And while we're at it, the company REAL goes the for the full caps. Who cares about that kind of stuff? I don't know. Maybe two of you. You don't have to send us a dm if you read all this. I know all seven of you are out there. But if you'd like to know more about brand standards of the skate world, feel free to email ventcitypod@gmail.com and I can tell you the other two I know that have unconventional capitalizations. We’re talking about how we're holding up during these trying times and then get into a Candy Jacobs article/interview on Jenkem by Sander Holsgens, where she talks about paving her own way in skating and the struggles she faced along the way. Check that out here: http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2020/04/02/building-skate-career-candy-jacobs/ Then we talk Arin Lester’s internet-breaking kicky front tail bigspin and Alex’s decision to get her locked down with some gear. Also, we Pyre a few things, but they’re hard to remember off the top of my head, so listen to that part and remind me. You all are the best listeners we could ask for. Please support the people who help us make this thing. Like, by going and listening to ilana Bryne’s page and listening to her new album. Wondering what that sounds like? Here’s a bit from the album’s description: “Are they simply DJ tools, or are they something more? They're ass-shaking, hip-bumping, head-nodding basement-style tracks presented for your pleasure.” https://shebco.bandcamp.com/track/short-ride It’s tight. Get there and then go find anything you can by Michael Worful who does our logo and graphic design. It’s very good stuff that will make your wall much nicer. Your wall looks like shit imo, but I guarantee it would be a world-class spectacle once you hang up one of Worful’s sweet, smiling, colorful flowers on it. Well that’s it. I hope you like these intros and if you wanna watch Alexis, Fiske, and PJ with me, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3uv07rei0o Questions about the show: ventcitypod@gmail.com Support the show: patreon.com/ventcity And send us a DM if you make it to the bottom of this. Pretty sure nobody reads them but they take me like 30-45 minutes to write so I’d like to confirm that I’m wasting my time.
What's up, skaters? We've got another hot conversation from many corners of our isolated nation. We hope this one brings you some joy. We talk about a lot of stuff and nothing goes the Pyre cause we're trying to be wholesome this week. We love you, all. Please, stay safe and watch Ryan's Twitch. What's up, Skaters? We hope this show reaches you in good health. This is a special one-time only show about skateboarding and wrestling by Ted Schmitz, who hasn't been able to shut up about it. In the summer of 2019, Ted was lucky enough to sit down with professional wrestler and long-time skater Darby Allin. No lengthy show notes on this one. We just hope you enjoy an hour in your headphones while you hunker down. Here are links to the pieces discussed in the show: http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2019/05/29/creating-realities-comparing-pro-skateboarding-pro-wrestling/ http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2019/10/14/interview-skateboarder-turned-wrestler-darby-allin/ Here are the people who help us with music and art, support them if you can: Ilana Bryne (@ilana.bryne or naivetrax.bandcamp.com) Michael Kryger: (@blogafonte) Michael Worful: (@worful) As always, contact the show if you have any suggestions or feedback: ventcitypod@gmail.com And lastly, you can help support the show by going to patreon.com/ventcity Thank you, all, and stay safe, skaters
Skaters, what is up? Episode 17 is coming to you straight from the Vent City studios in Maricopa County which actually is not that far from where Joe Arpaio’s absolutely abhorrent Tent City was. So there’s that. For the first time ever we have a live in-person roundtable discussion without the use of video conferencing technology. On the show, we’ve got the owner of a brand-new birthday Kristin Ebeling, followed by Ryan Lay, Ted Schmitz, and Kora Colasuonno from Queer Skate LA, to discuss a thousand topics which we will not, under any circumstances, give you timecodes for because it’s after midnight and somehow feel like if we don’t you’ll listen to the whole thing. We get into Kristin taking kids at Skate Like a Girl to the state capital to advocate for more skate parks and skate programming. Word has it, they even got the Governor to wear a SLAG hat. After that we talk about the olympic art of cupping which three out of four panelists tried and liked at varying degrees. The main focus of our discussion is centered around three things: local skateparks and why you should build them with beginners in mind, Queer Skate LA meetups and how Instagram can be used for good, and Marsha Ann’s Day in the Life video on Skateism. It’s all very rad stuff and pretty goddamn wholesome this time around. Check out Marsha's video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xORr_dAB52Q&feature=emb_title Oh, you’re wondering what our first skate shoes were? Yeah, we cover that too. Almost forgot, I give tips on frontside airs that you don’t need to listen to. The only real tip is to spend a few years as a fly-out kid and then live in shame until you find the guts to come back into the ramp. Also, minus that shame part. Fly-outs are totally fine. I get to say that stuff like it’s everyone on the show’s opinion cause I write the show notes and I don’t think they read them long enough to ask me to delete the parts where I’m misrepresenting their feelings towards hangtime. On the Pyre we’ve got Red Bull hats and a bunch of other silly shit! What’s up with our Pro-Flow credits songs? They’re fucking weird, but this time the studio just wasn’t working out so we did it a little different. As always our credits music is by Ilana Bryne (@ilana.bryne and naivetrax.bandcamp.com) Our logo and graphic design is by the ever-so talented Michael Worful (@worful) Thank you again, everyone, for listening. What in the complete fuck is up, skaters? This here is the sixteenth full episode of Vent City which originally was a place to talk about skating and all its bullshit and although we don't really use that tag line anymore we do, however, still talk about skating and much of its bullshit. This ep we've got five fine folks—Alex White, Kyle Beachy, Ted Barrow, Ryan Lay and Ted Schmitz—tackling three things at length: Nick Mathews on Huf. It's awesome. It's good. It's encouraging to see a talented young non-coastal sk8r get some shine. We don't fully know what "on Huf" means, but we like that Nick is that. We briefly touch the AO piece in GQ with a ten-foot pole only before realizing, there's not a whole lot there and that it just made Ted S—who is currently writing to you—kind of insecure about his own hotness compared to the chiselled Jesus. Anyway, why do outside publications think skaters who every now and then drink water and stretch are so fascinating? We get into that as well. Moving on, we talk about Jenkem CEO, CFO, COO, and probably also Head of HR, Ian Michna on a different podcast. Mostly just to have a discussion about the corrupting influence of advertising in media and alternative funding models and how goddamn hard it is for the skate economy to keep it's head above water without the big four pairs of shoes helping out. Anyway, buy Vans and Welcome or REAL boards. We're not paid to say that but who gives a shit. I'm the one who gets to write these and I thought it was funny. There will be no links to the things we discuss because you probably already saw them. Actually, here's the Nick Mathews part just in case you're confused: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QnaiF5bo4E Ok, that's it. More shows soon. We love you. Music by: Ilana Bryne (naivetrax.bandcamp.com) Logo and Graphic Design: Michael Worful (@worful) As always, thank you to our kind supporters on Patreon. We hope you listened to Ryan Lay's episode about canvassing for Bernie in Iowa. If you missed that or can't afford that feed, send us an email and we'll get you a show for your next drive or flight. Also, tell your friends to vote for Bernie and if they hate him, tell them to stay home. To support the show check out Patreon.com/ventcity and if you're super generous you can get mentioned in the Tom Waits covers at the end of the show! This week's challenge is to hop off a loading dock like you're a 5th grader. Get it, freaks!
Skaters, what is up? We are here with a half-cast on Vent City episode number 1-5. On the show, Ted Barrow, Kyle Beachy, and Ted Schmitz are talking: The best nolliers other than Matt Miller and Ryan Lay—obviously Paulo Diaz What two Teds were separately doing in San Francisco Why Kyle likes that one parking lot so goddamn much How Ted S. and Kyle deal with losing their dear canine companions A slightly broader conversation about skating and mourning The new Bronze video that most of us liked but one out-of-touch guy wishes it was a little weirder The new Kyle Walker and Ishod part We don't talk about Chief Keef because, somehow, none of us knew his music before googling it after the show We have a short Funeral Pyre for boring all black grip jobs courtesy of Ted S., but Ted B. doesn't mind it so maybe it's a tie or something. Whatever, I write the show notes, so I'll just say once and for all, fuck boring grip jobs. Spice it up like Snot Rag—who is a good friend of mine. You know, the guy with pink hair and baggy pants and colored rails? Yeah that's him in the slip-ons. Kyle needs to be two places at once and that's our whole show. Thank you to everyone who supports the show. We've got more coming soon. Hello and what's up, skaters! What we've got here is another episode of Vent City, where we talk skateboarding and some other bullshit. On this show we've got Kristin Ebeling, Alex White, Ted Schmitz and Ryan Lay, who are all also skaters. We talk about what's good in skateboarding like Pat Burke and Danny Dicola being awesome skaters in the Slave video, Radio Silence. Also Ryan Lay likes the Cafe video, Sonata, which you can find a link to right after this sentence is over. https://www.freeskatemag.com/2019/12/12/cafe/ Ryan also skated a demo for Bernie Sanders and Skate After School, along with Cowtown skateboards, gave out hundreds of skateboards to kids in AZ! Kristin and Skate Like A Girl delivered skateboards for Christmas to kids around Seattle with help from both 35th shops and we can all agree that's what's good. She also helped premiere the videos for Scene Attack in Seattle which is a sick street video contest that we might have a link to after I text Northwest people to get the link since googling "scene attack seattle" has delivered some truly horrifying results that aren't skate related at fucking all. Alex White is digging Maité Steenhoudt's eponymous part by Element and we have a nice little discussion talking about different parts of the video we liked that are all good and just reasons to get hyped on it. Oh, you want a link? Shit, you already saw it cause it was like three weeks ago? Well, fuck you, here's the link anyway so you watch it again, goddamnit! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpFRepAzKJ0&feature=youtu.be Also, who knew that Element had a Youtube channel? After the good stuff we get into more good stuff by talking about Women's Battle at the Berrics where both Alex and Kristin handled some business refereeing and broadcasting the action. After that contest discussion we get into a deeper talk about women's contests more broadly and whether or not all contests should be done away with. The answer to that question is in the show but if you're reading this, I'll just tell you: most of us are fine with contests existing except Ryan Lay who just wants pros to be out in the streets and in the community skating together. Then we get into our usual Funeral Pyre segment where we say farewell and goodbye to things in skating that no longer giving us any functional value. I, Ted, think that the front blunt with a crail grab shouldn't be performed anymore and also that it should definitely never be written or spoken of because the name it was given is just kinda ew. Ryan says something about contests and we just end up throwing him on the pyre instead. Goodbye, old friend, you are an amazing skater and dude but you don't know what should be skating worthy of the story and what is for the feed. Kristin throws being a "cool guy" onto the gorgeous pillar of flaming corpses. Just, like, say what's up to people and be mellow about it when you see familiar faces at the park. And especially don't purposely ignore people. That's super weird. Alex says teen pregnancy is quite passé so let's drop it. Also, we back planned parenthood where you can get lots of reproductive health services and access to contraceptives! Want a link to that as well? What's that? You know how Google works? Well, fuck you again, here it is! https://www.plannedparenthood.org/ And that's it for the shows main product. Music by Ilana Bryne (@ilana.bryne or naivetrax.bandcamp.com) Logo and Graphic Design by Michael Worful (@worful) Also check out this cool shit he designed for Skate After School and Pyramid Country https://www.pyramidcountry.com/product/pyramid-country-x-skate-after-school-tee-white After you see all that, feel free to listen to a truly cringey jam I made for our Pro Flow members who give to our patreon! And yeah, I'm gonna link it. https://www.patreon.com/ventcity Sincerely though, we thank each an every one of you for listening. We love you a lot.
Welcome Back to Vent City. Not really sure why I put the capital "B" in the "Back," but that's what you get when you fuck with show notes. On today's show that was recorded last week, we have Kristin Ebeling, Alex White, Ted Schmitz, Ted Barrow, and Ryan Lay. *Warning* This episode contains discussion of the 2020 Democratic primary by five bonafide nonpundits. We Bern it down by discussing a few reason's why you should maybe consider being a Skater for Bernie. We also talk a lot about Baker 4 which, like everyone else in the skate-nerd community, we waited patiently to come out on its own dedicated page on the Thrasher site. It's a fun talk. We also talk things you can support! Fellow Skaters, it is with the utmost pride and sincerity that we present this recording, as a living testament and recollection of history in the making during our generation. Allow us to re-introduce ourselves, our name is Vent City. V to the E-N-T-C-I-T-Y. On this episode you will hear Kristin Ebeling, Ted Barrow, Kyle Beachy, and Ted Schmitz say many words about our current skate of affairs...or maybe state of the skation? Skate of the skation? This week we have a discussion about many things we think are good in skating which are listed below with the corresponding links. We also have a discussion about Kristin's recent trip to Vancouver to talk with other folks working with social skate projects. Then we go into the topic of mental health and give some insight to our personal experiences and struggles. We also sort of talk about Milton Martinez for a second and also the Primitive video in the Funeral Pyre segment. No trick challenge this week cause we forgot. Maybe we'll have two next week. Here's what we think is good in skating. Buy these, read these if you want to enjoy some non-video-part skate radness. On this week’s episode of Vent City the limited panel of Ryan Lay, Ted Barrow, and Kyle Beachy discuss Ryan’s article on Jenkem about life lessons from a pro skater. Here’s a link for that: http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2019/10/24/life-lessons-pro-skater/ . They also talk Ben Chadourne’s BOOM and somehow not one person on the show knows how to say the filmmaker’s name. Here’s a link to BOOM for some reason: https://vimeo.com/367591176 Then the panel discusses the new Passport video, Kitsch, which we’re not going to link to cause it’s on our hard drives. This one is short and fun and we’ll see you next week, skaters. Stick around for the Pro Flow credits on this one for something special from Ted Barrow at a cocktail party with our dedicated Patreon team. Thank you everyone who supports the show. patreon.com/ventcity
Ted Barrow reads a piece he wrote about an ineffective homicide detective, an unrecognized Hubba, and the resilience of a certain type of humor—forged through skateboarding—between lifelong friends. To hear the full piece, and maybe give us money, go to Patreon.com/ventcity Also, we know not every skater is in a position to pay monthly for content, so if there is one or two Flowgram episodes you're dying to hear the rest of but you aren't able to sign up, just send an email to ventcitypod@gmail.com and we'll get you a download link.
#10 How to Skate While Also Being Terrified of Eating Shit For the listener who asked, "Why are the episodes always so late?" This one's for you. Kristin Ebeling, Alex White, Ted Schmitz, Kyle Beachy, and Ryan Lay sit down for a fireside discussion about Alex and Kristin's article, Coping with Creeps, on Bigfoot Magazine's site. Read the whole thing here https://bigfootskatemag.com/coping-with-perverts/?v=7516fd43adaa We also talk month old skate news like Reynolds leaving Emerica, Women's Street League and a Tyler Surrey part we hope you remember. The editor of this fair podcast says there will be more shows this week so stay tuned! Music by Ilana Bryne (@ilana.bryne and naivetrax.bandcamp.com) Graphic Design by Michael Worful (@worful)
Kyle Beachy and Ted Schmitz bring you a bonus episode about the part they both devoted weeks of their life to—Mark Suciu's Verso. The part is long, epic, and complex and we try to unpack a little bit of it. Enjoy. Oh, also if you wanted to watch along with us, start Verso at 31:13. Not kidding, that's literally the time stamp.
Holy Shit, Vent City episode nine is here just one day before Mark Suciu drops his long-awaited Verso part. But we don't get into that here. We are doing a Pushing Boarders recap ep to bookend all our PB coverage. Lots of things are talked about—why folks were at the conference, what they talked about and each panelist (co-host?) shares their highlights. Ted S thinks we should maybe do away with describing skateboard movements in non-skate outlets. It seems like he's coming down on one particular instance, but he's just shortsighted and has seen this come up many time in the past from news outlets. He really really does like the Tyshawn piece—it's very very good—even though he gripes about the kickflip front board description. Kristin pyres the practice of excluding non-male skters from leadership positions and decision making processes in the industry. Also maybe stop asking non-traditional skaters for their opinion if you're just going to ignore it or use it as free consulting. Kyle chooses some actual kindling for the funeral pyre and hope we can light the fucking Mega Ramp on fire for fucking good before it kills someone. Also, if you don't pop your tail, you might be missing something essential to this thing we loosely define as skateboarding. Ted Barrow is ready to burn down this whole thing where folks say "...... is ruining skateboarding." Most things other skaters are doing for fun on their skateboards don't really affect your skateboarding, even if the other Ted is fighting about it on Twitter. Ryan Lay says "bye bye" to elaborate camera gear that turns the session into a car commercial. The higher the production gear budget, the further you get from an organic session. Music by Ilana Bryne (@ilana.bryne, naivetrax.bandcamp.com) Graphic Design by Michael Worful (@worful) That's it. We love you. Big time. For more stuff or to support the show go to patreon.com/ventcity
Ryan Lay and Ted Barrow interview Leo Valls at the Pushing Boarders Conference in Malmö, Sweden last month to talk about his panel and the work he's doing back home in Bordeaux. To hear the rest of the interviews ryan conducted, just go to patreon.com/ventcity and you can sign up for either the Rep Flow or Pro Flow tier and you'll have those to listen to while you're doing stuff around the house or switching out bearings alone. Don't listen to podcasts in your headphones around your friends. It's a lame move.
Bonus Episode! Four of the six hop on the pod to answer listener questions. We talk about a lot of stuff and I don't wanna type it all out so listen and enjoy! Also, contribute here to Britt Rutan's Go Fund Me: https://www.gofundme.com/f/helpbrittrutan He's an Arizona sweetheart who took a bad slam in Portland and we love him and we hope some kind listeners and skaters can show him some love too.
Here is a selected interview Ryan Lay did with Mimi Knoop while at the Pushing Boarders conference. This is just one of five we've put up on our Patreon feed at patreon.com/ventcity. These interviews are just brief discussions to give listeners a sample of the panels we heard and participated in at the conference. In this interview Mimi talks with Ryan about how she helped get the X-Games to give equal pay for the women's division. It's an amazing story and we hope you like it. It's cool to like things. The additional interviews from the full show include Thom Callan-Riley (organizer at Pushing Boarders), Betsy Gordon (helping to catalog skateboarding at the Smithsonian), Indigo WIlling (Ph.D candidate working on what she calls "the new ethics of skateboarding"), and Rick McCrank (he's Rick McCrank).
Welcome Back, Skaters, to another episode of Vent City. On this show we have Kristin Ebeling, Alex White, Ted Barrow, and Ted Schmitz having a conversation about the Sk8 Rats video by Shane Aukland which has full parts from Kristin and Shari White from the Skate Witches and more. Shane steps in to set Ted S. straight on some of the music used throughout the video. The panel discusses Kristin’s part at length after a lengthy discussion of bath balms and the necessity of self-care in your 30s. They also discuss Cory Kennedy’s new part and how the prison system in America is a fucking joke. At some point they talk about the uses of a Theragun during foreplay so there’s that. Alex also tells a show-stopping about how the ASR Tradeshow saved her life. To prep the interview with Keegan Guizard at the College Skateboarding Educational Foundation (CSEF), the panel talks a little about each of their college experiences and what Ted B. gives an inside look at what is actually entailed by a Ph.D program—time, so much time. After Ted Schmitz (me) sits down with Keegan the group goes on to talk about the New York Times article about the events that happened in San Francisco earlier this year between skaters and a security guard. Then there’s the Funeral Pyre segment: Alex White throws in the practice of Go Funding Yourself to get to contests. The platform could probably be used to more necessary things. Kristin lights ablaze the practice of having companies being run and operated mostly by men who are shutting down opportunities for women in skating and don’t know how to advance equity in skating. Boy’s club shit needs to go. Ted Barrow can see, somewhere off in the distance a glowing orange strobe that seems to get more intense the closer he gets. It’s a giant temple of flames and everyone is standing around it honoring a memory while the heat keeps them at a distance. That giant flame is fueled by EMB footy in 2019 and the kept ablaze by the thick oil of nostalgia that soaks each clip. The historian stays toward the back of crowd, taking in the last flickers of light as the crowd starts to dissipate while he mutters to himself—or maybe an imagined historically minded crowd member—“all I see is an absence, not a presence.” Ted Schmitz on a petty note takes issue with the constantly reinventing instagram move of archiving the grid so skaters only have one post up, making it impossible to find the funny heel flip board slide of yesterday. For this week's Patreon Flowgram we have a reading by Ted Barrow about being disrespected by a non-skater in high school, self-respect, and the significance of a good pair of pants.
Welcome back to Vent City, a place to talk about skateboarding and it’s bullshit. This week on the show we have novelist Kyle Beachy, pro skater and commentator Alex White, art historian Ted Barrow, and Thrasher contributor Ted Schmitz. The panel starts by discussing good things going on in skating and the world—USA Women’s Soccer team being non-White House going badasses, teaching kids to push their skating, and Jacob Elliot Harris’s recent video output. Following the Trust Fall and Nike videos discussion the panel discusses the Welcome video, Seance, and discusses whether or not Ryan Lay’s most recent part is dummy good or not. Spoiler: nollie front salad equals dummy good. WIth the industry skate talk out of the way, everyone engages Ted Barrow on stopping the daily skatepark clip reviews on feedback_ts and what his output on the account looks like going forward. They also discuss sincerity online and arguing with 14 year olds. The funeral pyre burns bright this week as we say goodbye to some practices in skating that once served us but maybe we could do without. Ted Schmitz thinks being good at skating for certain people is no longer enough to make him like someone’s skating, Ted Barrow thinks roll-on grinds that aren’t in a pool are quite corny. Alex White thinks nose slide bigspins in contest runs have run their course. Kyle Beachy thinks their is an odd thing taking place where skateboarding, instead of having our scene co-opted by pop culture, is now taking influences from the broader culture when it comes to things like Spencer Hamilton’s Primitive intro video, which seems to look more like an innocuous Uber commercial than a street skating video. Hey Skaters, In the sixth episode of Vent City, the cast (Kristin Ebeling, Ryan Lay, Ted Barrow, Kyle Beachy, and Ted Schmitz) talk Alexis Sablone's Thrasher interview by Elissa Steamer and whether skating is enough to keep someone happy. They go over some already covered ground about pads and shame, that hopefully uncovers something exciting. Dew Tour had a remarkably young podium for the Women's division and they talk about how these young skaters are pushing the limits. Misugu Okamoto and Kokona Hiraka are both under 15 and winning/placing alongside well established skaters like Lizzie Armanto. Music in this episode was provided by the amazing Ilana Bryne (naivetrax.bandcamp.com & @ilana.bryne on Instragram)
