In my free time, you can find me traveling around Latin America, reading a book, or diving into some great food. ​ Recently, I graduated from Elon University with a degree in Communication Design and minors in Spanish and International and Global Studies. I am taking time after graduation to travel throughout South America, beginning my adventures in Peru. When I return, I will begin my career as a digital designer.

Alan's next sailing adventure was to sail around the world alone in the BOC Challenge, a single-handed yacht race. 27000 nautical miles of sailing in 4 stages Alan started the race in September 1994. Alan and 19 others sailed out of Charleston Harbour, in South Carolina USA and after 181 days at sea, Alan arrived back to see the lights of Charleston again after an epic voyage. Many times not knowing if he could but knowing inside that he would.  The complete story of the voyage is laid out in his book “Against All Odds”.  Alan raised the funds from multiple contributors and community support. Alan started building his Yacht,  “Newcastle Australia” with a huge step of faith and belief this would happen. Through many trials and tribulations, he built it. He sailed to the start line in South Carolina halfway around the world to begin his solo BOC Challenge Race arriving 1 ½ hour before the cut-off time. So I guess you could say he has sailed 1 and a half times around the world that year.  Alan didn't win the race, he placed 4th, but won the hearts and respect of all who sailed with him in the race. Alan won two medals for seamanship. The first for saving the life of a fellow competitor and the second for sailing jury-rigged around Cape Horn. Alan's alternator died, his computer failed, he could not receive weather reports or fleet updates for several weeks, had to deal with 50-foot plus waves, cyclonic winds, snow, hail, being dismasted, losing a rudder, seas that rolled the boat over and over, surviving the doldrums and missing his wife and family for nine months of racing during preparation for the race and during the race.  I invited Alan into this podcast series because of all the people I know, Alan depicts someone for me who decided to plan a life he wants to live in. He is the most determined person I have ever met.  I enjoyed Part 2 of the discussion with Alan just as much as the first, I hope you enjoy as well.

Verneda Lights Port Royal, South Carolina USA website instagram Born into the Gullahgeechee Nation of the South Carolina Low Country (USA), Verneda Lights is a visual artist/ photographer who is well known for her many Afro-surreal and Afro-futuristic works. Her artworks span from traditional (paintings and drawings on canvas and paper), to digital. As an historian, physician, poet, and science writer, Verneda draws upon the history and sub/conscious imagery of the African diaspora. She creates from the belief that science informs art and art shapes science. In 2017, photo-collages from her “Gullah Me” collection were on display at the 2017 Whitney Biennial, (as part of Occupy Museums' group exhibit), Woman Made Gallery (Chicago, IL), and City Gallery (Charleston, SC). Highlights of 2018 included exhibits at the Hilton Head Town Hall, City Gallery (Charleston, SC), and Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art (St. Joseph, Missouri). In 2019, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate commissioned her to create an art chair to honor activist Raffi Freedman-Gurspan. Her chair remains at the Kennedy Institute. From March to April, 2021, her work will be exhibited in “Represent: New Portraiture,” at the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Ashley Harwood is a woodturner, instructor and installation artist. She turns utilitarian bowls, ornaments and jewelry. Her design aesthetic is heavily influenced by a background in glassblowing and her works are completed entirely on the lathe.She began woodturning at the suggestion of her father and apprenticed under Stuart Batty.Turning for over nine years, she's traveled throughout the U.S., Eastern Canada, the U.K and Australia teaching and demonstrating her woodturning expertise.Ashley received her B.F.A from Carnegie Mellon University in 2004 with study abroad in 2001 through Kennesaw State University in Montepulciano, Italy in 2001 and in 2003 at the L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/WoodturnersWorldwide)
