We often have biases that influence our attitude towards people. But God is perfectly just and will not be influenced in any way by any biases.For that reason, after this life is over, we will receive a reward or punishment that is precisely fair because we will be receiving it from an all-knowing, all-perfect God.On this feast of Our Lady's Assumption, I want to focus on the question of heavenly merit. We know that, for each one of the actions that we perform in the state of grace and for a supernatural motive, we deserve a heavenly reward.Basically, if we do a supernatural work, for something beyond this life, then we deserve a reward that is beyond this life. And that reward is greater or lesser based on how many supernatural acts we have performed and the intensity of the love of God with which we have done them.If, in the next life, we all receive from God the reward that is due to us, what, we may ask, is the reward that Our Lady received after her death?Well, since Our Lady's actions in this life were the greatest of all human beings, next to her Son, her actions were the most meritorious. They deserved the greatest reward from God.What was the reward that God assigned to her for actions? Abdul El-Sayed is going to be the Democratic nominee for Senate in Michigan, but the victory was much closer than it looked when I initially planned to call it. With 23 percent of the vote counted, Haley Stevens was barely leading in Oakland County, which she represents in Congress, and the outstanding votes appeared to favor El-Sayed. I thought he was heading toward an eight-to-ten-point win. Instead, the margin narrowed to about 1.4 percent. Barring some miraculous vote drop out of Detroit, El-Sayed wins, but this wasn't an overwhelming progressive victory.The polling miss is the polling miss. Congressional polling is never the most reliable. What's strategically telling is that much of the expectation for a blowout came from El-Sayed's own campaign, which released internal polling showing him ahead by 15 points. That obviously didn't happen. Can you question the wisdom of releasing those numbers? You can. You can question that wisdom.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. My prediction was closer to the final result than El-Sayed's internal polls, but a loss is still a loss. I believed Mallory McMorrow's female voting bloc would break more heavily for Stevens. I said from the beginning that McMorrow would decide this race; I just didn't realize it would be her ghost bridging the gap between the other two candidates.El-Sayed started this three-way dance as the owner of the progressive lane, and he owned the issues that mattered in Michigan. It didn't matter how folksy the Stevens campaign tried to make her. El-Sayed won, the establishment lost, and progressives deserve to celebrate. Raise a PBR and let your tears stain your unused college degree. Progressive listeners can dance on my shame because they've earned it.But the lesson for progressives is the opposite of what it was on The Real World: They need to stop getting real and start getting polite. Their movement isn't overwhelming. I don't care how fired up Michigan is about Israel, Medicare for All, or any other progressive policy. El-Sayed needs Haley Stevens voters if he's going to defeat Mike Rogers. He needs to reach out and say, “Let's stick it to ‘em… together,” because progressives aren't going to get there by doing it exactly their way forever.This is still a big day for progressives, but the final margin changes what it means. It wasn't proof that they can squash the establishment on their own. It was proof that they can win a close primary and then immediately need the people they just beat. The Echo of God: Mary's Praise and the Transformation of the Human Heart This conference represents a Marian retreat centered on praying . . . . . . “with Mary, in Mary, through Mary, and for Mary,” emphasizing that the purpose of the day is not primarily intellectual instruction but interior experience. The opening prayer . . . the Little Crown of the Blessed Virgin . . . draws on Revelation 12's image of the woman crowned with twelve stars, structured as three “crowns”: excellence (Mary's virtues and divine motherhood), power (her royal and mediating role in salvation history), and goodness (her compassion toward sinners, the suffering, and the dying). The second half of the reflection develops a meditation on the biblical meaning of the “heart.” In Scripture, the heart is not merely emotion but the center of the human person, the place of desire, loyalty, and moral orientation . . . what shapes either good fruit or evil actions (Luke 6:45; Mark 7). The heart is also closely linked with the eyes and ears: what one sees and hears shapes obedience or resistance to God. A divided heart, influenced by many “lords” such as wealth, power, or ego, contrasts with the single-hearted obedience demanded by the Shema (“The Lord is one”). Mary is presented as the model of this unified heart . . . completely ordered toward God, perfectly receptive to His Word, and fully cooperative with the Holy Spirit. In this light, the Immaculate Heart of Mary is understood as the perfectly purified human heart in total relationship with God . . .fully obedient to the Father, receptive to the Son, and fruitful through the Holy Spirit. Her responses in Scripture (“Let it be done to me according to your word,” and “My soul magnifies the Lord”) reveal her as the “echo of God,” where every honor given to her returns as praise to God. The retreat concludes by inviting participants to examine their own hearts: who or what is their true “lord,” and whether their hearts are unified in God or divided among competing loyalties.
