Bianca Lopez (Southern Methodist University) joins the Infectious Historians to discuss her recent book on plague, piety and power in late medieval Italy. Lopez begins with a survey of the impact of the Black Death and subsequent second pandemic outbreaks on Italy and moves on to talk about the specific area she studies - Santa Maria di Loreto. She examines the indirect impacts of plague on the rural area while using some of the surviving testaments to better understand mortality in the area in the late 14th century and early 15th century. The discussion covers the physicality of the site as well as the challenges in making causal connections. Before wrapping up, Lopez also touches upon her experience writing a history of disease during Covid, and reflects on how her pandemic work might help researchers working on other pandemics.

Saint John Bosco was called at an early age by the Virgin Mary who tasked him with helping orphans wandering the streets during the early days of the Industrial Revolution. His ways with the youth included fun and games and always learning the word of God. This podcast episode of Constant Procession is about St William and the Black Madonna of Montevergine. The Virgin Mary apparated to St. William, a Benedictine monk during his pilgrimage to the Holy Land. She tasked him to stop his trek, and build the “Most Holy Mother of God Monastery” on the side of a steep mountain north of present-day Naples, Italy back in the 12th century. How could he or any other humans predict this monastery would become the fortress that protected St Lukes' “Black Madonna” and the “Shroud of Turin” from the clutches of Hitler during WWII? Part 17- This is the seventeenth and final installment of my first book “The Constant Procession.” Listen from the beginning- Episode 409- Part 1 NOTE: These final chapters were written before the current war between the Ukraine and Russia broke out. The time period I wrote about began in 1922 when the Ukraine was totally controlled by the USSR. In 1991, the USSR broke into the numerous independent countries that included the Ukraine. Russia became the most powerful country in the region and this distinction continues today. Chapter 28 continues to describe this earlier time period when Ukrainian churches were under siege during the times of the USSR's religious suppression. However, it was Ukrainian Immigrants to North America who kept them going during this suppression. The final chapter is about apparition sites where the Virgin Mary has appeared. They offer hope for a timeless mode of being for those in the constant procession... There are links, photos and more about this on my website. Pray for this war in the Middle East to end. Part 16- This is the sixteenth installment of a free reading of my 1st book entitled “The Constant Procession.” You'll hear it for free from cover to cover in 15-minute podcast segments! Medjugorje, does not come to mind as a vacation spot. But it has inspired visiting pilgrims to spread the Madonna's words. For young people, who have not lived more than thirty years, this area of the world is typically not on their radar. For those who have lived a bit longer, there remains a dark mental imprint. A remembrance that recalls brutality inflicted on people within this region as they experienced civil war in the 1990's. Fighting caused by the breaking up of Yugoslavia. For me, the news reporting during that period of the civil war did little to help explain the confusing jumble of puzzling information that ominously included atrocities, genocide and war crimes. Yet this area is where the Madonna appeared. She offered to the world a surprising counterpoint to humanities deeds. It's amazing to me that even during that civil war pilgrims from around the world continued to converge on Medjugorje, which seemed to be located in the middle of the warfare. The Virgin Mary appears at Medjugorje in Yugoslavia (now Bosnia and Herzegovina) in June 1981. Her earliest messages reinforce Gospel teachings by Christ on ways to live: “Love God and Neighbors, Faith, Prayer and Fasting.” “These are how a person can ‘return to God' and enjoy the ‘fullness of life.” Meanwhile a Pope and a President find renewed clarity of purpose as they recover from assassination attempts and continue to live on the ‘pointy edge of the sword.' Part 14- This is the fourteenth installment from my book “The Constant Procession.” You'll hearing it for free from cover to cover in 15-minute podcast segments! Time Magazine's proclaims ‘God is Dead.' Situations around the world seem to prove it. Riots across the USA over the Viet Nam War and Racial Injustice... A ‘6-Day War' in the Middle East. This history seems strangely current. But it was also at that time when the Virgin Mary decided to appear in Egypt... And became a welcomed symbol of Peace. Protestant critics of Orthodoxy fault us for many things, but one of the foremost of their objections is our devotion to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Hostility to Roman Catholicism is built into Protestant DNA, so anything in Orthodoxy that resembles something in Roman Catholicism will be subject to criticism, including such more or less innocuous things like clergy wearing cassocks and calling themselves “Father”. Our Orthodox devotion to Mary (whom we call “the Theotokos”) often heads the list of Protestant objections, since it features so prominently in Roman Catholicism.

Do Catholics worship Mary? Was Mary always a virgin? All of the Marian dogmas solicit a myriad of rebuttals and some can be difficult to respond to. In this episode, Amanda Valdés Sánchez addresses the crucial role of Marian devotion in the Castilian domination of the former territory of Al-Andalus and its native Islamic population. She analyzes the Castilian exploitation of the local Islamic cult of Maryam as an essential tool for consolidating the Castilian control over the recently conquered territories of the South and the expansion of the colonial project. Her analysis also reveals the fundamental role of Mary in the articulation of the Andalusian Islamic population's place in the Castilian colonial regime and its transformation. This is an exploration of the political significance of Marian devotion in the convulsive context of Late Medieval and Early Modern Spain, defined by the birth of the Inquisition, the emergence of new communities of converts to Christianity, from Judaism and Islam, and the progressive racialization of religious ancestry and ethnic differences. In this sense, Valdéz Sánchez inquires into the political meaning of devotional trends in the changing Castilian religious panorama of the 1500s, analyzing its links to the transformation of royal and ecclesiastic policy and social attitudes towards religious and ethnic diversity, especially regarding the forced conversions of 1501 and 1526, the evolution of the collective perception of Moriscos, and the development of the “Morisco Problem.” Finally, Valdéz Sánchez looks into the Morisco response to the significant changes that characterized 16th-century Spain, analyzing how Morisco communities and elites, facing the threat of expulsion and the erosion of their rights and privileges, used the politically charged figure of Mary as a way to vindicate their place in the emerging Spanish Empire. For more information on Amanda Valdéz Sánchez and this discussion, visit our website at www.multiculturalmiddleages.com.
