Week 3 | The King Has Come: Joy

"Christmas is DYNOMITE"

In this profound and hope-filled Advent message, Pastor Karl continues the Christmas series with an honest, Scripture-saturated exploration of the third great gift Jesus brings: joy. Turning to the familiar yet astonishing encounter in Luke 1:26–38, Pastor Karl places us in the world of a young, powerless Mary—living in obscurity, poverty, and spiritual dryness under Roman oppression—when an angel suddenly declares her “highly favored” and announces she will bear the Son of God as a virgin. With pastoral clarity and compassion, Pastor Karl redefines biblical joy not as a forced smile, fleeting happiness, or denial of pain, but as a deep, settled confidence and calm cheerfulness in God—even when circumstances feel devastating. Mary's potentially ruinous situation (public shame, rejection, and lifelong stigma) becomes the backdrop for a joy that is rooted not in perfect conditions but in surrender to a perfect Savior. Joy, he shows, is not situational; it flows from trusting God's greater reality, His unchanging character, and His presence when clarity is absent.Drawing from Mary's radical response—“Let it be to me according to your word”—Pastor Karl tenderly calls every listener to the same doorway of lasting joy: radical surrender. Whether facing disappointment, health struggles, dashed dreams, or seasons of grief, joy grows when we release control, timelines, and the need to understand, and instead say “Yes, Lord” to whatever He has spoken. This is essential listening for anyone longing to move beyond seasonal happiness into the quiet, resilient cheerfulness that only Christ, born in a manger and risen from an empty tomb, can give.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

From IRAN to AFGHANISTAN, from ERITREA to SUDAN, and from London to the hidden corners of persecuted regions, millions stand firm in Christ where following Jesus costs everything. This scripture remains one of the most recited passages among persecuted believers because it confronts suffering with unbreakable hope. Although they are hunted, silenced, imprisoned, or displaced, God has not abandoned them. His presence remains stronger than every chain, every wall, every accusation, and every threat. Today we lift our brothers and sisters who gather secretly, whisper prayers in locked rooms, worship in remote villages, and share the gospel at great personal risk. May the Holy Spirit strengthen them beyond human endurance and surround them with supernatural courage.Prayer Points Prayer for protection over secret believers, prayer for courage in underground gatherings, prayer for strength for prisoners of faith, prayer for endurance under interrogation, prayer for safety over hidden churches, prayer for hope in isolation, prayer for bold witness in danger, prayer for provision for displaced families, prayer for the gospel to advance under pressure, prayer for God's presence to sustain persecuted believersLife Application Remember persecuted believers today and speak 2 Corinthians 4:8–9 in solidarity with them. Let their courage inspire your faith and shape your intercession.Declaration I declare that persecuted believers are not crushed, not abandoned, and not destroyed, for God upholds them with unshakeable strength.Call to Action Share and subscribe to support global prayer for persecuted believers and visit DailyPrayer.uk to stand with the underground church across the world.persecuted church, faith under fire, secret believers, underground church, prisoners of faith, dailyprayer.uk, 2 corinthians 48, christian suffering, courage under persecution, global intercessionSupport the showFor more inspiring content, visit RBChristianRadio.net — your home for daily devotionals, global prayer, and biblical encouragement for every season of life. Send us your feedback — we're listening2 Corinthians 4:8–9 (NIV) “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” Recorded live here in London, England with Reverend Ben Cooper  Across Iran, Afghanistan, Eritrea, and Sudan, believers follow Jesus under some of the harshest persecution in the world. From London to Tehran, from Kabul to Asmara, from Asmara to Khartoum, underground churches gather in whispers, in locked rooms, in safe houses, and in hidden prayer circles. This scripture remains one of the most memorised and quietly spoken verses among persecuted believers because it declares resilience in the face of oppression. It reminds the global church that persecution is real, but abandonment is not. Iran's secret disciples, Afghanistan's hidden believers, Eritrea's imprisoned Christians, and Sudan's targeted followers continue to stand firm through pressure, fear, and threat. Today we lift every believer in these four nations—those who risk their lives to worship, those who lead underground networks, those facing imprisonment, and those who share Christ in hostile environments. The Holy Spirit strengthens what persecution attempts to crush and sustains every step of their witness.Prayer Points Prayer for protection over secret believers, prayer for courage in Iran's underground church, prayer for strength for Afghan disciples living in hiding, prayer for relief for Eritrean prisoners of faith, prayer for safety over Sudanese Christians facing violence, prayer for hope in isolation, prayer for boldness to share the gospel, prayer for provision for displaced Christian families, prayer for the advance of God's Word in hostile territories, prayer for God's presence to surround persecuted believers across these four nationsLife Application Remember the persecuted church today by praying intentionally for believers in Iran, Afghanistan, Eritrea, and Sudan. “For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” (2 Corinthians 4:17–18 NLT) God loves you. Those words are so simple and so familiar that they might be mistaken for a cliché if they weren’t also so profound. The fact that God loves you gives you immeasurable worth. It also gives you context for your entire life. Nothing in this world, good or bad, can begin to compare to God’s love for you. No grief or trouble can overwhelm you because God loves you too much to let it happen. No difficult circumstance can defeat you because God loves you. No struggles are too difficult for you because God loves you. So, when grief, trouble, difficult circumstances, or struggles come, you can put them in perspective by remembering and being thankful for God’s love for you. The apostle Paul wrote, “For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever” (2 Corinthians 4:17–18 NLT). God’s love lasts forever. Paul also wrote, “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love” (Romans 8:38 NLT). Because God loves you, He is always looking for your eternal benefit. God is wiser than you are. So, if He tells you to do something or not to do something, He does so for good reason. The devil doesn’t want you to believe that. He will whisper in your ear, “God hates you. God wants to ruin your life. All those rules in the Bible are just there to make life miserable. You Christians serve an oppressive God who doesn’t want you to have any fun.” What a bunch of nonsense. I’ve lived apart from Christ. I’ve had the so-called fun this world has to offer, and it wasn’t fun at all. I’ve also found that a life with Christ is a life of fulfillment and purpose. Let us never lose our spirit of thankfulness for the fact that God loves us and is always looking out for our eternal benefit, even if what we’re presently going through is difficult. Reflection question: How can you keep the devil from interfering with your relationship with the Lord? From London to Tehran, from Tehran to Kabul, from Kabul to Beijing, from Beijing to Mogadishu, millions of Christians live under surveillance, threat, hostility, imprisonment, and danger. 2 Corinthians 4:8–9 is one of the most treasured scriptures among persecuted communities because it declares that pressure cannot break what God upholds, and darkness cannot silence what Christ sustains. Their worship is whispered, their gatherings discreet, but their courage is supernatural. Today we lift every believer who risks everything to follow Jesus, every pastor in hiding, every family displaced by persecution, every young person forced to worship in secret, and every prisoner of faith who stands alone yet held by God's presence. The Holy Spirit fills the underground church with boldness the world cannot understand.Prayer Points Prayer for supernatural protection over hidden believers, prayer for courage in underground worship, prayer for strength for prisoners of faith, prayer for endurance under interrogation and pressure, prayer for safety over secret gatherings, prayer for comfort in isolation and fear, prayer for boldness to share Christ in restricted nations, prayer for provision for displaced Christian families, prayer for revival in persecuted regions, prayer for the gospel to advance despite oppositionLife Application Remember the persecuted church today. From London to Cairo, from Cairo to Islamabad, from Islamabad to Beijing, from Beijing to Khartoum, the persecuted church continues to stand in courage against surveillance, hostility, imprisonment, and threat. 2 Corinthians 4:8–9 remains one of the most shared scriptures in underground communities, declaring that pressure does not break those God upholds. Psalm 91:1 runs powerfully alongside it, offering a sheltering promise for every believer forced to hide their faith. These verses rise as anchors in regions where worship is dangerous, where gathering is illegal, and where believers risk everything to follow Christ. Today we lift secret believers, displaced families, imprisoned pastors, house-church leaders, and every worshipper living beneath threat. God's presence fills the places where fear tries to silence faith, and His protection surrounds those the world tries to crush.Prayer Points Prayer for supernatural protection over hidden believers, prayer for courage during interrogation and threat, prayer for strength for prisoners of faith, prayer for safety over underground gatherings, prayer for boldness to share Christ in restricted nations, prayer for provision for displaced Christian families, prayer for hope in isolation and fear, prayer for resilience under persecution, prayer for the gospel to advance despite opposition, prayer for God's shelter to rest over every persecuted believerLife Application Pray intentionally today for believers who cannot pray aloud, cannot gather publicly, and cannot worship freely. Today, we are joined by Michael White, lead pastor of Freedom Church (a fellow church in The Pillar Network). This standalone sermon is based on 2 Corinthians 4:16-18.1. The problem of pain (v16)…he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. 2 Corinthians 4:14The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Genesis 6:52. The purpose of pain (v17)God has cast me into the mire, and I have become like dust and ashes. I cry to you for help and you do not answer me; I stand, and you only look at me. You have turned cruel to me; with the might of your hand you persecute me. Job 30:19–21I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn't know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father. John 15:15…he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” John 14:21“If, however, you are privileged enough to be taken by one of the high-ups into the magnificent electrical signal-box that lies athwart platforms 7 and 8, you will see on the longest wall a diagram of the entire track layout for five miles on either side of the station, with little glow-worm lights moving or stationary on the different tracks to show the signalmen at a glance exactly where every engine and train is. At once you will be able to look at the whole situation through the eyes of the men who control it: you will see from the diagram why it was that this train had to be signalled to a halt, and that one diverted from its normal running line, and that one parked temporarily in a siding. The why and the wherefore of all these movements becomes plain, once you can see the overall position.” - J.I. PackerEvery millisecond of your pain — from fallen nature or fallen man — every millisecond of your misery in the path of obedience is producing a peculiar glory you will get because of that suffering. - John PiperOne thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. Psalm 27:4“…to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it.” - C.S. LewisAnd we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. 2 Corinthians 3:183. The prescription for pain (v18)If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above… Colossians 3:1We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10Life Group Discussion Questions: lifechurchnc.com/standalonesermons2025Life Church exists to glorify God by making disciples who treasure Christ, grow together, and live on mission. Hope for Those Facing Adversity | 2 Corinthians 4:17

“For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!” (2 Corinthians 4:17 NLT) It’s a day like any other. You get out of bed. You take a shower. You brush your teeth. You eat breakfast. You read your Bible and pray. You commit your day to the Lord. And then it happens. A visit from a police officer who tells you there’s been an accident. A call from a doctor who informs you that you need to come in immediately because of something he found in your test. A note from your spouse who says they’re done with your marriage. A pain in your body that you’ve never felt before. Crisis hits hard and fast. Job’s world came crashing down in one day. An impulsive act by his brothers changed the course of Joseph’s life. When crisis hits, the natural tendency is to look inward and ask, “How am I going to get through this? Is there any hope for me?” But a better—and, admittedly, much more difficult—option is to look for opportunity in the midst of crisis. God allows adversity and crisis in our lives for important reasons. If we focus on those reasons, we can grow spiritually, even in the worst of circumstances. One reason God allows adversity is to keep us humble. Prosperity and success tend to make people proud and self-sufficient. We lose sight of our need for God. Adversity and crisis remind us just how much we need Him. God allows adversity to teach us eternal truths that we would not otherwise learn. The faith that cannot be tested is a faith that cannot be trusted. God wants us to toughen up and mature as believers. Adversity helps accomplish that. Adversity gives us a new compassion for others who are in pain. Paul wrote, “He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us” (2 Corinthians 1:4 NLT). When you endure adversity, you’re positioned to help others endure it. You can help them navigate the difficult terrain. You can offer specific encouragement. You can say, “I’ve been through this. Here’s what I did. Let me pray for you.” It’s essential that we keep our adversity in perspective. Paul wrote, “For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!” (2 Corinthians 4:17 NLT). Instead of focusing on the troubles we see now, we must focus on the joys to come that will last forever. God’s people are better off eternally because they suffer temporarily. Adversity ultimately brings us closer to God. Psalm 46:1–3 says, “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!” (NLT). No matter what shape our adversity takes, God will walk with us through it. Reflection question: When have you experienced God’s presence in the midst of a crisis? Episode Synopsis:C. S. Lewis brought a biblical expression from Paul into the broader evangelical world in his influential 1941 sermon “The Weight of Glory,” based upon 2 Corinthians 4:17.  Lewis points out that glory, as used by Paul, is a not a ‘flimsy” thing, but something substantial and abiding.  Unlike the shadows of affliction, the denseness of heavenly glory is something real and solid.  Since his sermon was widely read and discussed, Lewis made the phrase “the weight of glory” one of the most significant and well-known themes in 2 Corinthians, along with other well-known phrases from Paul, such as “jars of clay” and “he made him who knew no sin to be sin.”  The former is Paul's description of human weakness (which we covered last time), while the latter is tied to Paul's discussion of Christ's reconciling work upon the cross–a matter which we will address next time (2 Corinthians 5:21).If our bodies are mere jars of clay or tents, as Paul puts it, then our outer selves (our bodies) are destined to grow old and eventually fail–as a clay jar crumbles and as a tent wears out.  Paul uses Greek categories (which his audience would understand) to speak of an inner and outer self, yet without the dualism typical of Platonic philosophy.  Paul sees such things through the lens of Christian eschatology–this age and the age to come, as well as through the categories of seen (our current existence) and the unseen (our heavenly existence).  The unseen remains just over the horizon where we cannot see nor experience it until we enter the Lord's presence. While we experience all sorts of afflictions and troubles in this life, Paul's point in our text for this episode (2 Corinthians 4:16-5:10) is that our inner self is simultaneously being renewed in anticipation of the weight of glory–even as our outer self wastes away.  Despite what Paul has been through in his dealing with the Corinthians, the difficulties he has faced throughout the Gentile mission must be seen in light of the glory yet to come.  Since the Christian knows that our faith is grounded in the fact of Christ's cross and empty tomb, so the Christian hope is immediate entrance upon death into the presence of God (ensured by the indwelling Holy Spirit) followed by our own resurrection from the dead at the end of the age.  So even as we live this life in the midst of death, we anticipate the “weight of glory” yet to come since we are given a foretaste even now through the gospel and the power of the Holy Spirit. For show notes and other recommended materials located at the Riddleblog as mentioned during the Blessed Hope Podcast, click here: https://www.kimriddlebarger.com/

Episode Synopsis:In chapter 4 of 2 Corinthians, Paul addresses a subject no one likes or wants to talk about–the frailty and weakness of the human body.  We have all seen images of great athletes with robust and fit bodies–the Greeks and Romans idolized the human body in their art and sculpture.  But think of those magnificent bodies at their peak (say in their 20-40s) in contrast to those instances where we see the same person much older–with weight gain, joint and muscle deterioration, baldness, crepey skin and wrinkles, and the onset of illnesses and various maladies.  That is what Paul is getting at here.  We are all “jars of clay” destined to die.  This is the inevitable outcome of Adam's fall into sin.  Given his experience as an apostle, preaching the cross of Christ (as unpopular a message as one can find in the ancient world), Paul knows what it is like to suffer for Christ's sake, as well as sacrifice his own body and health in the service of Christ's church.  Paul is not a masochist nor a whiner.  But he has suffered greatly for the cause of Christ, especially in his work in Corinth–a church where many now belittle his work because of his physical weakness.  We get hints in this letter of the emotional toll this took on Paul, as well as the impact of illness and bodily trauma.  Paul recounts these matters to explain to the Corinthians why things have taken the course they have.  Paul is not a stoic who strives to “keep calm and carry on.”  He is not a peddler of God's word.  Paul trusts in God's providence through the power of the resurrected Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit to bring about deliverance from the source of all of these problems–human sin.  Paul reminds the Corinthians (and us) that eternal things are indeed ultimately far more important than temporal things.  The cross is a divinely-revealed message which speaks to these ultimate concerns, whereas Greek and Roman paganism is a mere figment of the sinful human imagination and does not–indeed cannot.  In fact, Paul attributes the latter to the work of Satan–the blinder of minds and the thief of souls. In response to the challenges he faces in Corinth, Paul does not stress fitness, diet, supplements, or exercise as we are apt to do and which are, no doubt, important to our quality of life.  Knowing that bodily frailness will eventually overcome us all–Paul directs the Corinthians (and us) to the sure and certain hope of the resurrection and entrance into the glory of God.  We may be afflicted and suffer now, but the glories of Christ and eternal life in his presence is our future.  For show notes and other recommended materials located at the Riddleblog as mentioned during the Blessed Hope Podcast, click here: https://www.kimriddlebarger.com/
