“All religions are basically the same.” We're no strangers to such an appraisal in today's world. We even hear it from the lips of many who identify as Christians. But such a conflation of the various competing worldviews out there would have been unthinkable to the apostle Paul. Specifically, there is one thing that sets Christianity apart from every other religion out there: they are all primarily concerned - in one way or another - with instructing their adherents in how to live; commending a law to live by. Christianity, on the other hand, proposes that “a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ” (Gal 2:16). In this text, Paul will expound all that faith in Christ can do for us that the law was powerless to do.

Send us a textThis podcast shows how Paul fought for the true gospel message for the benefit of the church of Jesus Christ. Every new church started by Paul involved false teachers swarming in to destroy his message. The false teachers in Galatia were Judaizers pushing for all believers to keep the law of Moses and live by works. No grace was considered like Paul taught. Even Peter with the influence of James was blinded or believe in works. Listen to hear Pauls powerful message that saved our gospel message that remains todaySupport the show
Paul was recently invited to be a guest preacher last month. He is no longer on staff at a church and does not preach regularly, but it's one of his favorite things to do when he gets invited back into the puplit! In today's episode, Paul preaches on Galatians 2:20: The Danger of a Gap in Your Gospel. If you want to listen to 150 archived sermons from his days as a preaching pastor, you can find those on our dedicated Paul Tripp Sermon Podcast. Unity. It's one of the most frequent exhortations found throughout the New Testament: the call to “be united in one mind” (1 Cor 1:10); to “maintain the unity of the Spirit” (Eph 4:3); to “agree with one another and live in peace” (2 Cor 13:11). It was even Jesus' final prayer for his followers: “that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me” (Jn 17:23). But what is this “one”-ness that we share in Christ? What does it mean to be one in the gospel? Check out the sermon for part two of Paul's answer in Galatians 2:11-21.

In the Old Testament the Lord Himself many times appealed to Israel as His covenanted wife to be faithful to Him and likewise condemned the lovers of Israel who seduced her. Therefore, when we find the Apostle Paul using very strong language in this inspired Letter to the Galatians (perhaps the strongest he uses in all his New Testament letters), he is fully justified in condemning the seducers who were seeking to lead these new Christians from Christ and the truth of the gospel which he preached unto them. It ought not to be shocking to us to hear Paul fighting for the souls of those who are being misled into very dangerous errors and heresies. That's what faithful ministers do—they fight for the souls of those sheep that Christ has given to them to shepherd.

Send us a textGalatians 2The apostle Paul visits Jerusalem, where he meets with church leaders to confirm his gospel message to the Gentiles. Peter and James affirm his ministry through their personal testimony and the scriptures, agreeing with him, only reiterating that he should care for the poor. Later, in Antioch, Paul confronts Peter about his hypocrisy—eating with Gentiles but withdrawing when Jewish believers arrived. Paul rebukes him, reminding him that justification comes through faith in Christ, not Moses's Law. He explains that believers are crucified with Christ and now live by faith in Him. Paul declares that righteousness cannot come through the Law; otherwise, Christ's death would be meaningless. This chapter emphasizes the significance of unified faith in Jesus, who loves His people and died to save them by God's grace. False brethren attempted to bring Christians under the control of their sectarian rules, but salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by meeting human expectations. We must remain fully committed to Him. Just as Paul confronted Peter, we should examine our own lives for hypocrisy—do we live consistently with the gospel, or do we change based on who is watching? This chapter challenges us to stand firm in truth, even when it's difficult. Our old self was crucified with Christ, and now we live by faith in Him. Rather than justification by works, we should live in God's grace and extend it to others. Living with integrity and pointing others to Jesus reflects the true gospel daily. Gracious Lord, thank You for the gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Help us to live in the freedom of Your grace, trusting in Your power to save us. Give us courage to stand firm in the truth, even when faced with opposition. Reveal any hypocrisy in our hearts and guide us to live with integrity, reflecting Your love to others. Remind us daily that we have been crucified with Christ and that now we live by faith in Him. Teach us to live this more noticeably. May people learn more about Jesus when they are near us. Thought Questions: - Are you consistent with Jesus' teachings, or do you sometimes change in different environments? What helps you be faithful in all places? - Jewish teachers sought righteousness through law keeping instead of faith in Christ. How do you avoid making this same mistake? - Paul confronted Peter due to his hypocrisy. Are there times when you must do this with others? Are you open to believers doing so with you?

If you remember from last week, Paul is telling his storyNow, at the end of his autobiography he mentions Peter (Cephas)– this is the only record of them ever having a personal encounter• as Paul approaches the primary purpose of his letter• he uses this story to illustrate his central point– the leaders of the Church in Jerusalem recognizedthe difference between his ministry and Peter's“they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted to the circumcised” (v. 7)• he used those “circumcision” terms to distinguish between Gentiles and Jews, because he wanted to make a point• they all belonged to Jesus, but Jewish believers had an obligation that did not apply to Gentiles◦ circumcision is shorthand for all the laws of Moses
Paul recounts a crucial moment in the history of the early Church, including a direct confrontation with Peter. The heart of the Gospel is laid bare: we are justified by faith in Christ, not by works of the law. Paul makes it clear that anything added to the cross of Christ is not the Gospel at all. The Rev. Nathan Scheck, associate pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, NE, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Galatians 2:1–21. To learn more about St. John Lutheran, visit stjohnseward.org. There's urgency in Paul's voice. No warm greetings. No slow build. Just a sharp rebuke: “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you.” The stakes are that high. Galatians is Paul's bold stand for the pure Gospel message: Christ crucified and risen, apart from works of the law. When freedom in Christ is threatened by legalism or confused with license, Paul doesn't hold back. He calls the Church back to the cross, to the promise, and to the Spirit. In this series on Thy Strong Word, we walk verse by verse through one of the most foundational and explosive letters in the New Testament. The message is clear: You are justified by faith, not by what you do. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations.
