SouthStart was back with a bang in 2018 - successful in their mission to unite, connect and recognise amazing people doing incredible things. Across the 2 day conference, entrepreneurs, CEOs, and innovators came together in a celebration of people, ideas and technology. An exciting opportunity for startups to unite in their passion for shaping our future - it was eye opening to hear where some of these new directions could take us. Live from SouthStart, I speak to three people heavily involved in this space. Alex McCauley, CEO of not-for-profit organisation, StartupAus, has deep insight into technology startups in Australia, from policy to current success stories. Jason Neave, director of the Moonshine Laboratory, the organising body behind Southstart, has many years of experience in marketing and has launched his own sports-betting startup. Craig Swann, The Moonshine Labs Entrepreneur in residence, played a key role in coordinating the SouthStart conference. In today's episode of Be The Drop, Alex, Jason, and Craig discuss the importance of events like Southstart, we look at the future landscape for startups in Australia and they share advice for getting support along your startup journey.  --- This episode was produced in support of SouthStart Conference - an event that celebrates the collision of people, ideas and technology. He's an Olympian, Tour de France stalwart and Tour Down Under winner, but Patrick Jonker says the life of a professional cyclist is far from glamorous. Riding up to 300km a day for three weeks in the Tour de France, the pain is unimaginable and relentless. It is not uncommon for parts of the body to shut down (Pat recalls losing vision in one eye during a hill climb), and the mind also enters a "dark place". The only thing keeping the cyclists going is optimism, and the hope of a big pay day. Making money on the Pro Tour isn't easy, despite the global popularity of the sport. Pat talks about the business of cycling, where riders wait for the cameras and sprint to give their sponsors air time, and the unofficial deals brokered on the road by rival teams. Lance Armstrong changed cycling, for better and then worse. Pat was on Lance's now infamous US Postal Service team, but missed out on Tour De France selection in 2000. While devastated at the time, it kept him out of the team's drug program and the enormous fallout that followed. Pat says elite performers in business and cycling aren't as different as they seem. Learn about resilience, overcoming failure, tips for peak performance and enjoy the fascinating stories from Patrick Jonker. Marcus Bailey says he's always been a little different. When his mates got jobs in bars while at uni, Marcus got a liquor licence for his bedroom and sold discounted wine (before discounted wine was a thing). This fascination with buying and selling set the foundation for his corporate finance advisory firm, Fortis Ago, which has completed $434 million in Mergers and Acquisitions in the last 18 months. Marcus shares insights into Fortis Ago's work with VinoMofo, a high profile Australian wine marketplace, which included a sale and then buyback. He says M&A is like going to the casino; betting big, sometimes winning and sometimes losing. Dealmakers become "emotionally bipolar" - months are invested into a deal, and there are no guarantees of getting paid until the money is in the bank. For Fortis Ago though, winning has been the only option. Key to the success has been the team's ruthless approach and fierce competitiveness. And also the Adelaide market which Marcus says is, perhaps surprisingly, "plentiful" for M&A work. But working in South Australia has presented massive challenges. Marcus says battling Adelaide's "tall poppy syndrome" has become the norm, and 'success' is now a dirty word. In response, Marcus started the Engine Room, an organisation to support South Australian business owners.
