This past weekend's Living Free Festival in Pillar Valley, Australia was a great success with an international alliance of noted speakers and free thinkers who believe it's time to return our world to the Creator's intended design as a Realm of Peace & Plenty.  Our own Mike Winner made the journey as a feature speaker for the event, so we thought it would be great fun to have Barre Lando patched in with the boys Down Under to recap the weekend's festivities, and to just catch up with our good friend, Tom Barnett. Tom Barnett is a Holistic Health Practitioner and photographer/videographer.  He became well-known after he posted the video "You can't catch a virus" and it went viral during Covid, helping people to understand the true nature of what was transpiring at the time. As a voice during these times, Tom helped to Co-Found the Living Free Movement on which he actively lends his voice to help find solutions to problems and inspire the community.   He is known for his unique way of educating and teaching the principles of Natural Law, helping men and women break through illusions and remember who we inherently are. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Co-found an incubator for independent AI Safety researchers, published by Alexandra Bos on June 2, 2023 on LessWrong. Full-time, remote APPLY HERE Deadline: Thursday, June 8th (in your timezone) If your ideal job would be leading an impact-driven organization, being your own boss and pushing for a safer future with AI, you might be a great fit for co-founding Catalyze Impact! Below, you will find out more about Catalyze's mission and focus, why co-founding this org would be high-impact, how to tell if you're a good fit, and how to apply. In short, Catalyze will 1) help people become independent technical AI Safety researchers, and 2) deliver key support to independent AI Safety researchers so they can do their best work. Would highly appreciate it if you could share this message with people who you think might potentially be interested in this role and upvote this post if you think more people should see it so we can find the best potential co-founder for this. You can ask questions, register interest to potentially fund us, work with us, make use of our services in the future and share information here. Why support independent AI Safety researchers? Lots of people want to do AI Safety (AIS) research and are trying to get in a position where they can, yet only around 100-300 people worldwide are actually doing research in this crucial area. Why? Because there are almost no AIS researcher jobs available due to AIS research organizations facing difficult constraints to scaling up. Luckily there is another way to grow the research field: having more people do independent research (where a self-employed individual gets a grant, usually from a fund). There is, however, a key problem: becoming and being a good independent AIS researcher is currently very difficult. It requires a lot of qualities which have nothing to do with being able to do good research: you have to be proactive, pragmatic, social, good enough at fundraising, very good at self-management and willing to take major career risks. Catalyze Impact will take away a large part of the difficulties that come with being an independent researcher, thereby making it a suitable option for more people so they are empowered to do good AIS research. How will we help? This is the current design of the pilot - but you will help shape this further! 1. Fundraising support > help promising individuals get funded to do research 2. Peer support networks & mentor-matching > get feedback, receive mentorship, find collaborators, brainstorm and stay motivated rather than falling into isolation 3. Accountability and coaching > have structure, stay motivated and productive 4. Fiscal sponsorship: hiring funded independent researchers as ‘employees' > take away operational tasks which distract from research & help them build better career capital through institutional affiliation In what ways would this be impactful? Alleviating a bottleneck for scaling the AIS research field by making independent research suitable for more people: it seems that we need a lot more people to be working on solving alignment. However, talented individuals who have invested in upskilling themselves to go do AIS research (e.g. SERI MATS graduates) are largely unable to secure research positions. This is oftentimes not because they are not capable enough of doing the research, but because there are simply too few positions available (see footnote). Because of this, many of these talented individuals are left with a few sub-optimal options: 1) try to do research/a PhD in a different academic field in hopes that it will make them a better AIS researcher in the future 2) take a job working on AI capabilities (!) 3) try to become an independent AIS researcher For many people, independent research (i.e. without this incubator) is not a good & viable option becau...

Meet Liam James Collins - an inspiration. Liam grew up in a poor area of London to salt-of-the-earth, hardworking self-employed parents. He was disregarded as a lost cause in the one size fits all U.K school system guiding him to forge his own path. Liam's entrepreneurial journey has taken many twists and turns over the years wrought with successes, failures, and just about everything in between. Starting out as an actor, Liam's unshakable self-belief and hustle led him to star in BBC dramas and various movies working alongside Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Cristian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Cain, and Anne Hathaway to name a few. Liam's acting career later came to a screeching halt leaving him broke and without a way to pay his rent. “I went from acting alongside Tom Hardy on the set of Batman to literally delivering Tom's mail as a full-time postman.” Liam knew he needed to drastically rethink his future, so he re-trained as a Neuro Linguistic Programming Master Practitioner and Life Coach in 2017. Unspeakable adversity followed through a series of unexpected events including the loss of his father whom he loved and admired deeply. Despite these difficult times, Liam went on to Co-Found the fastest-growing global coaching academy - The Coaching Masters, which generated >$5M+ in its first 4 years achieving a valuation of $25M in 2022. Liam has personally qualified over 5,000+ coaches worldwide and has played a key role in the development of revolutionary virtual reality and artificial intelligence coaching technology. “If there are small things that we can do to move in the right direction, that does matter. Then our growth could actually feel purposeful, and not just growth for the sake of making more money.” In this week's episode of The Irresistible Factor, we find out how Stacey Marcellus' experience living on a farm in Argentina led her to Co-Found a thriving frozen food brand – Cappello's. Cappello's is on a mission to set a new standard in frozen food like pizza, pasta, and cookie dough. But it's made with awesome and healthier ingredients like almond flour and turnips (yes, turnips!), making their products grain-free and nutritious. Of course their products taste delicious, but Cappello's is one brand that is focused on nutrition above all else. “We stand behind using whole food ingredients and having them be as unaltered as possible.” Stacey and I discuss how the frozen food market has changed drastically over the years and how frozen food is no longer “something you just eat in front of the T.V.” It is actually a way to keep products super fresh. Stacey also opens up about the flaws in the food industry (excessive packaging, all the freight it takes to transport food, and traditional farming practices) and how she is taking small steps to try to do better. Recently, Cappello's partnered with one of their suppliers, Treehouse, and together, they are testing some regenerative practices over the next five years on their almond orchards. “Even though we're not purchasing regeneratively sourced almonds today, being part of a project like that feels really cool. And it's really exciting because if we get positive results over the next five years, that will influence the entire almond industry.” Kristi and Stacey talk about the evolution of Cappello's over the last 11 years and the lessons that Stacey has learned. Stick around to the end for an inspiring story Stacey shares about the importance of asking for help.

How have Rachel McMahon's athletic experiences led her to co-found a startup company with the mission of changing the mental game for athletes?Finding purpose in your experiences can be critical to life after sport. However, those that find purpose beyond athletics often move on to leverage their competitiveness and drive to build successful professional lives. My guest on this episode, Rachel McMahon, was a walk-on track athlete at Brown University. In Episode 21, Rachel discusses how her own mental health challenges and her experiences while running at Brown for four years led her to co-founding Galea Health, which holds the mission of connecting athletes with tailored mental health care.Rachel talks about how being a walk-on allowed her to maintain a growth mindset throughout college and how her interactions with fellow athletes at Brown led to what is now a burgeoning early stage mental health company. My suggestion to young athletes is to think about their values and what is important to them outside of sport. Maintaining perspective on the importance of athletics in our lives can help us optimize performance and more importantly, maintain our mental health.

Aubrey Terrazas is the Co-Found, Marketing Director, and Master Sommelier Candidate for the Palate Club. Her intro into the wine world began with her degree in French and as she waited tables alongside sommeliers. She continued her learning and worked as a sommelier for many years at the start of her career in wine.As an avid wine enthusiast and lover of learning, I have thought a lot about becoming a sommelier. Through my research, I found it to be a rigorous and intense process. Aubrey shared that there are many avenues into this field. To work in a restaurant as a sommelier there is no formal education or certification required. Many use their personal knowledge and experience. However, if you do choose to get a certification or even a master's certification, it is very intense because you have to learn about wine and grapes from all over the world. Palate Club was founded by Nicolas Mendiharat. He became a wine lover growing up in France and noticed a problem in choosing wine from the large variety found on shelves when he moved to the USA in 2015. Even having knowledge about wine, he found difficulty finding the wines he liked when there were so many labels in front of him. Palate Club was founded to help wine lovers find wines that match their taste, learn about wine, and discover new bottles from around the world. Sustainability Sourced in the wine world is really on-trend right now. People often find that wine labeled “Sustainable” can give less of a hangover, which makes sense because the word sustainable can mean so many things in the wine industry. Aubrey described sustainable as an umbrella term, starting all the way in the vineyard, from how they grow and treat their grapes all the way to packaging. In fact, more than 50% of a wine's carbon footprint comes from a bottle. As a woman in a very male-dominated industry, Aubrey shared some of what she sees and her advice for women in wine or other industries. Like many fields, as a young woman, it can be hard to get a job and be taken seriously. Aubrey says that the key to success is to work hard and stay authentic to who you are. She finds it important to put the focus on your power and your knowledge and not on using vanity to get ahead. I can say that being heavily involved in the social media world with Crystal Media, it can be easy to be distracted by vanity and compete in that way. However, if you're true to yourself, I truly believe you will get where you want to go in the way you want to get there. This was such a fun episode for me because as you know, I love wine! It was so fun to talk about wine and learn so much! I cannot wait to hopefully do a tasting with the Palate Club soon! What's Inside:What is the Palate Club? What it takes to be a sommelier.Sustainability in wine. The ins and outs of palates and the wine world.Women succeeding in a male-dominated industry.Mentioned In This Episode:Palate CLubPalate Club on InstagramAubrey Terrazas on LinkedInSan Diego Hat Co: EXCLUSIVE!! If you guys are anything like me, shopping for jeans can be a real pain in the you know what. I experienced this recently when I ripped my favorite pair of selvedge denim right up and middle, and had to go on the hunt for a replacement pair. Finding the perfect pair of denim was no easy task, especially when you're a picky consumer like me who is very specific with regards to quality, manufacturing, and most importantly, fit. Thankfully, today's guest set out with her co-founders to solve the problem of ill-fitting jeans at scale. Her start up, Unspun, automates the generation of custom-fit patterns from 3D body scans so that when you order denim from them, they fit to the exact mold of your body. Talk about solving a huge problem with one foul swoop! My guest today is the super smart Beth Esponnette, Co-Found of Unspun. Beth joined me to talk about how Unspun's tech is the new way of buying perfect fitting jeans, the launch of their newest product, and how their dissolvable stitching is streamlining the upcycling process that will create a circular model moving forward.
