Here's the full text of this short episode:Hey everyone, Dan here with a quick, exciting update on this show... the name is about to change! In a few days -- on January 20th --  you'll see that this podcast will have new cover art, a new name, a new trailer, and more...I'm not going to reveal that name today, but I do want to share a bit of why I'm changing the name of a show that's been honored 3 years straight by the Webby Awards -- and what is NOT changing.OK, so there are three main reasons for the name change:- the first is very practical: "crafted" is really hard to find in search. I've literally stood next to people who are looking to subscribe and they can't find the show. I swear this wasn't the case when we launched 3yrs ago, but today there are several shows that are either called crafted or something close to it. - the second reason is more personal: the show is mine now -- that wasn't always the case. You may recall the show launched when I was with a high craft software consultancy doing product and client work. The podcast was a surprise! When I left and got full ownership of the show I didn't want to change too many things all at once. Also, I like the name crafted, but -- and this leads to the *real* reason I'm changing --- it no longer fits the show.- crafted is a past tense verb. and it perfectly described the original incarnation of this show, where founders, makers, and innovators would look *back* on things they'd built and we'd do a sort of case study that would help other builders learn from their mistakes and understand how that great product or company they built got so great...So here's the thing... I'm not really doing that sort of case study thing anymore. And I haven't for a while. Creating explicitly educational content is not favorite thing. I'm not exactly a "here is a framework" kind of guy. There are other people who LOVE to create that sort of content and they do a great job with it. So I've been following my interests... For a while now, this show has been much less concerned with teaching case studies and much interested in what comes *next.* * What are the implications of new tech? * How will AI change how we live, work, play, teach our kids...? * Should we get ready to live with humanoid robots? * How are stablecoins changing the world of money? * And what about quantum computers? And what do builders need to know about these things so that we can build a future we actually want? See that part is not changing... the show is still for builders. And you can take that literally: as in people who make software. Or if you want you can take it a bit more broadly: as in: people who putting in the work to build a better future.Sorry if that's a bit cheesy, but it's true. Because while I'm optimistic that we will build an amazing future, there is... uh... a lot going on right now in tech and in the world. And I believe that, together, we have power to steer the future in the right direction. This show will still feature the world's top technologists. And we're going to get into all of these future-forward things. Of course, we'll talk about things they've done in the past, because if we don't learn from history... well, you know how that expression goes. So, get ready to see some new art and a new name -- I'll give you a hint, it'll have the word future in it -- on Tuesday. And I would love your help spreading the word. When the new trailer and website drop, please share them with all your builder friends. So stay tuned...

What if the mental health diagnosis you’ve been told limits you is actually the beginning of your most extraordinary life? What if stability isn’t the ceiling, but just the foundation? What if the system telling you to “just be stable” has been setting the bar far too low? Award-winning speaker and mental health advocate Gabe Howard reveals a truth the mental health system doesn’t want you to hear: people with serious mental illness can do more than survive. They can thrive, build careers, speak at Oxford University, and lead badass lives. The Dreams That Bipolar Disorder Interrupted Gabe Howard grew up dreaming of becoming a tech mogul, the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. It was the mid-90s, the early days of the internet, and he wanted to be an entrepreneur in the public eye. He even considered stand-up comedy. Then bipolar disorder happened. Psychosis happened. Suicidality happened. He was committed to a psychiatric hospital, and everything came crashing down. When he finally reached recovery, Gabe was angry and traumatised. He searched desperately for resources to help himself and his parents, but the harder he looked, the less he found. That’s when he realised something powerful: he wanted somebody to do something, and then he realised he was somebody. He never thought advocacy would become his career. He thought he’d volunteer for his local mental health charity and maybe make a small impact. Now, he’s a Webby Award winner, hosts the Inside Bipolar and Inside Mental Health podcasts, has spoken at Oxford University and the National Press Club in Washington, DC, and wrote a book called Mental Illness is an Asshole and Other Observations. Mental Health Is Identical to Physical Health One of Gabe’s most powerful insights: mental health isn’t like physical health. It’s identical to physical health. Everyone has mental health, just like everyone has physical health. Most people, most of the time, have good mental health. But just like you can catch a cold or break a bone, you can experience mental health challenges. The day after losing a loved one, no one expects you to be at your best mentally. That’s normal. Yet society treats mental health as binary: you’re either “crazy” or “perfectly fine,” with no room for the grey areas where real life actually happens. The System Wants You Stable. Gabe Wants You Thriving. Gabe challenges the mental health establishment’s tendency to set expectations dangerously low. Too often, people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression are told that getting a part-time job and living in a group home means “you’re doing great.” While stability matters, it shouldn’t be the only goal. He’s witnessed people in group homes being told they can’t work full-time or pursue their passions when the real issue is that the system is too scared of relapse to let them try. He shares the inspiring story of Rachel Starr Withers, who lives with schizophrenia yet has hiked volcanoes, appeared in Marvel films, and hosts the Inside Schizophrenia podcast. Her philosophy: “I want to lead a badass life.” No Magic Bullet, Just Consistent Jabs Using boxing as a metaphor, Gabe explains that recovery isn’t about one knockout punch. Everyone loves the idea of that one breakthrough moment, but most fights aren’t won that way. What wins is dozens of small jabs: maintaining sleep hygiene, taking medication as prescribed, keeping mood journals, attending therapy, exercising, eating well, and practicing radical honesty. These seemingly small things add up to sustainable wellness. The key is consistency, not perfection. The Workplace Stigma That Costs Everyone Gabe makes a compelling business case for reducing mental health stigma in the workplace. Companies that create cultures where employees can be honest about their struggles gain productivity. When people feel safe saying they need a mental health hour, they’re more likely to come in later that day rather than calling in sick entirely. This transparency transforms a full day lost into just an hour or two, making it not only ethically right but also more profitable. Three Golden Nuggets for Your Journey Everyone Has Mental Health. Mental health is NOT just negative. It’s a spectrum everyone exists on, just like physical health. The Basics Really Matter. Recovery isn’t one big breakthrough. It’s many small pieces fitting together: sleep, diet, movement, medication, therapy, and honest communication. The Goal Is to THRIVE. Don’t just “live with” mental illness. Believe that people with mental illness can lead GREAT lives, not just get by. Send us a textTheater #183: Poetry on the Menu Poetry on the Menu​​​ In January 1967, writer/participatory journalist George Plimpton dreamed up a publicity stunt for heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. He arranged for him to meet Marianne Moore, decorated American poetess – a showman who creates doggerel rhymes, together with one of the finest true poets in the history of the English language. The pair couldn't be more opposite – He a gigantic, athletic man of color, at his physicalpeak, age 25, not formally educated, a Muslim, loud, charismatic, a showman with the burgeoning edge for social causes and advocacy; She, elderly, age 80, pasty white, doggedly Presbyterian, incredibly well educated, shy, frail and a kind of dowager spinster. Ali's poems, so called, which predicted his fights, were little more than expanded limericks. Moore's balletic verses and images won her the Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal in Literature and almost the Nobel Prize. Theirhost that day, Toots Shor, was a rough New York man of Jewish descent, who rubbed elbows, hosted, drank with, and incurred the wrath of entertainment giants of the first two-thirds of the 20th Century: Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin, Ernest Hemingway, Joe DiMaggio, Marilyn Monroe, etc. The meeting only lasted a few minutes and produced a short poem, “On the annihilation of Ernie Terrell,” Ali's next title foe. The playwright has expanded the meeting in a deeper way, as a one-act play, using snippets ofMoore's poetry to frame the time, Ali's immediate and lasting appeal through his pithy quotes uttered over two decades, and foreshadowing his thoughtful future self.Bernadette Armstrong directs a cast that includes Omari Williams as Muhammad Ali,  Anne Cooper as Marianne Moore, Gary Lamb as Toots Shor, and Justice Davis as Kandu.James Anthony Merolla is the playwright. As a director, editor, and director of photographer, Steven Mallorca has produced a large body of work that spans across narrative, documentary, commercial, and music video film fronts. Steve co-directed, edited and shot A Peloton of One which won the 2020 Greenwich International Film Festival Audience Award, and served as the Director of Photography and Editor of the 2015 ESPN documentary, The Lost Trophy. His directorial feature debut, Slow Jam King, was hailed by the New York Times as “Do it yourself filmmaking at its purest… with spirited characters and high levels of comic energy” and won Asian Cinevision's Emerging Director Award. Steve is also the series editor for San Francisco Opera's 2022 Webby Award-winning documentary series, In Song, as well as Cleveland Orchestra's performance and documentary series, In Focus. Feeling a complete disconnect from herself without this company she'd worked so hard to build, Madison realized she needed to do something different. Therapy, something she'd done a lot of, wasn't going to cut it. She needed a serious change. She turned to Hoffman. In this engaging and spirited conversation, Madison leads us through the before, during, and after periods of her Hoffman Process experience. As we listen in, we're able to glimpse not only her journey, but some of the Process journey itself as seen through Madison's eyes. One of the significant negative patterns that Madison transformed was "control," one that plagues so many of us. In her brilliant words, she shares the big Aha! she had behind the transformation of this pattern, wisdom that's true for many patterns. Madison explains, "I learned at Hoffman that control was a survival instinct. If it was a survival instinct that meant I could unlearn it. ... I learned that young Madison, to no fault of her own, developed control to deal with her childhood."  A major takeaway from Madison's Process transformation is the realization that the Universe, or whatever you want to call it, has your back. When Texas passed its six-week abortion ban in 2021 and Roe v. Wade was overturned, some local abortion clinics considered moving to the neighboring state of New Mexico to grant abortion and female care access to women from both states. However, some residents in New Mexico opposed it. Now, Texas has passed a law further restricting access to abortion by targeting abortion pills, and its measures are also affecting eastern New Mexico. In this episode, we travel to New Mexico to meet Latinas and Latinos who have mobilized to protect abortion access there, while others are trying to revive an obscure law from the 19th-century to stop clinics from opening. This story from 2024 recently won a Webby Award. How'd Lou start out? He began doing improv and sketch comedy while an undergrad at New York University, where he was part of the comedy group the Wicked Wicked Hammerkatz. Lou was a writer for Fox Sports' @TheBuzzer; produced The Attendants with Lorne Michaels's Broadway Video; produced pilots for FOX Digital and MSN Games; and was a comedy producer on TruTV's Impractical Jokers. Lou hosted the stand-up show Uncle Lou's Safe Place in Los Angeles, performed at the Big Pine Comedy Festival, Bridgetown Comedy Festival, Punching Up Comedy at Freedom Fest, and co-created the political comedy podcast Unsafe Space.
