Player appearances can be immensely powerful as part of a sponsorship. And it seems simple enough - put a huge star on stage, in front of a room of people you are trying to impress, or in a marquee as part of an activation, and you’ll engage your audience and there will probably be lots of digital to help spread it all. However, not everyone can afford the superstars and, even if you can, it isn’t always the best play when it comes to appearances. Like all sponsorship assets, it depends so much on what you are wanting to achieve. Add to that that so many sponsorship deals get ‘topped up’ with player appearances, as a bit of an add-on and a feel-good gesture, and a lot of brands, and rights holders for that matter, can miss out on the huge benefits available through appearances. This is an especially important point when you consider that many athletes are on the lookout for more paid opportunities and the chance to broaden their experiences and engage with the community. One man who knows the space well is James Begley. Not only is James the Founder, and CEO, of Pickstar, the most trusted platform for facilitating paid engagements, large and small, but he’s also been on the other side, as an athlete, when he played 61 games of Australian Rules Football with St. Kilda and Adelaide. He was one of those athletes on the lookout for more paid opportunities and the chance to broaden his own experiences and engage with his community. James joins us in this episode to discuss how rights holders and brands can maximise the use of appearances in their sponsorships. You can connect with James on LinkedIn and find out more about Pickstar on the website. Along with James, also joining us on the show is KORE’s Head of International Business, Mark Thompson, who discusses his latest blog which looks at The Changing Face of Broadcast and What This Means For Broadcast Partnerships. I wanted to get him back to unpack some of his insights further.Over a 15 year marketing career, Dan has worked with some of the world’s greatest creators and innovators of brands. From Coca-Cola to Mars, Smirnoff to the Kellogg’s labels, he’s spent his career to date contributing to the legacy of global icons across a range of consumer goods categories, delivering distinctive communications, innovation and brand partnerships. In this interview, Dan talked through the evolution of Kellogg’s Australia’s sports partnership strategy in more detail. Kellogg’s has played a big role in Australian sport over the last few decades - there’s been the long standing Nutri-Grain Ironman relationship through to AFW and most recently hockey, where Sultana Bran has taken on naming rights of the new Hockey One league.Dan talks about the values-led approach to partnerships taken by Kellogg’s, and how that has played out in the context of the three different sports and their individual strategies. He also talks about the benefits to brands who get in early with emerging sports and leagues, weighing up the commercial value of partnerships, the importance of talent, what the future looks like for brands in sport.PickStar is the best place to book sports stars and personalities for any event, campaign or engagement you can imagine.Choose from over 1300 stars past and present, PickStar works fast with ANY budget. Just about every athlete and sporting club, from your average Sunday cyclist to the elite teams, is collecting performance data on some level. But how do you make sense of it all? Particularly if you’re a sports scientist or coach with a team of athletes tracking training, game day and wellbeing data every day. It is overwhelming, even for some of the world’s leading teams, who are surprisingly still pouring through spreadsheets and Excel formulas across multiple platforms to find their insights. This is where Ben Tripodi and his company Lumin Sports Technology comes in. Lumin builds applications to visualise athlete performance and help coaches and sports scientists make fast and accurate decisions to unlock team potential. The Lumin journey is an unlikely and remarkable startup story. Just 18 months ago, leaders from global IT giant Dimension Data encouraged Ben to start his own sports tech company out of Adelaide, at the age of 24, promising to back him in and sign on as his first client. They were true to their word, and would set the foundations for Lumin’s growth, which now counts Tour de France teams, global sporting bodies, US universities and AFL clubs as its clients.Ben talks about how it all started with a cold email to a cycling boss. We also discuss the challenges and opportunities in athlete data and why it is a huge and fast growing market. As well as his own personal development, as a young founder and former athlete, through the process.Find out more about Lumin Sports Technology here.PickStar is the best place to book sports stars and personalities for any event, campaign or engagement you can imagine.Choose from over 1300 stars past and present, PickStar works fast with ANY budget. This time last year, we shared a panel event interview featuring Jaimie Fuller, the Chairman of pioneering compression sportswear company Skins, who talked about his activism and issues around trust in sport. This time when we sat down with Jaimie, the circumstances were very different. Skins filed for bankruptcy at the start of the year, after years of Jaimie and his team trying to pull the business out of the red.It was a sad end for one of the most courageous sports brands, and while it was a surprise to some, it wasn’t to Jaimie, who said it all came about because he did a lousy deal with bankers just before the Global Financial Crisis.Jaimie opens up completely on what went wrong, the mistakes and the learnings. We also talk about whether it is possible for brands to have true social impact and commercial success, the issues in sport he’s most passionate about and what’s next for Jaimie - it is highly unlikely we’ve seen the last of him. The role of the sports talent agent is widely misunderstood. A lot of people will think of Jerry Maguire, or flashy dealmakers driving big money club and brand contracts. Or, to the frustration of our guest, troublemakers who fuel the headlines and movement in the player market.Marty Pask, owner of i50 Management, gives us a fascinating insight into what the world of an athlete agent is really like. And for Marty, who works predominantly with AFL talent including Essendon captain Dyson Heppell, it starts with empathy. As a former AFL footballer who only played a few games at the highest level, he understands the rollercoaster from draft day through to being cut, and everything in between. Marty says it is about joining his athletes on the journey, which starts from that first cup of tea with an 18 year old athlete and his parents. The role of the sports talent agent has changed drastically in the last five years or so. The ruthless nature of social media and a fast paced news cycle is a talent agent’s nightmare. And while social media can make or break a brand in a moment, it has also turned the commercial market on its head. Marty says it wasn’t long ago when it was all about TV exposure and getting as many eyeballs on the talent and brand as possible - now it is about influencer marketing and the athlete’s engaging social channels. We also talk about the key elements of the sports talent market and where it is heading, identifying talent and building player brands, the circus of the AFL trade period and much more. Genevieve Gregson (better known by her maiden name, LaCaze) has become somewhat a poster girl for Australian athletics - a dual Olympic runner specialising in the 3000 metre steeplechase event, with an Australian record to her name, combined with a marketable style and humble, Aussie attitude.Gen has found her way into the headlines for exploits on and off the track. She burst onto the scene in 2012 when she surprisingly qualified for the Australian Olympic team, only it was a day late. When Athletics Australia tried to hold their line on the qualifying rules, within hours Gen was trending on Twitter and making international news. Only then did the Australian Olympic Committee get involved and open the door for her inclusion in the team. Then two years later, Gen jumped on stage at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony dancing with Kylie Minogue ... in front of a global audience. She tells us the hilarious back story. But behind the fun and games is an athlete with enormous commitment to her craft. Gen says the drive has been there since she was a kid - dedication to diet, sacrificing everything to get better and chase her athletic dreams. And she’s had more than her fair share of injury setbacks to overcome. Rooster Radio - Stories & Insights from Entrepreneurs and Leaders in Business, Health, Tech & More
We end 2018 with some reflection, picking up on an episode we recorded almost a year ago to the day.It was episode 100, when Rooster Radio co-host James Begley unpacked what was the hardest year of his life, in raw detail.A number of our listeners were a bit stunned - it seems not many people understand the financial and personal impact that running a startup can have. After posting the episode, there were more than a few phone calls from concerned mates asking if Begs was holding up ok.(But there are many gold nuggets on business and resilience in that episode, so make sure you wind back to episode 100 if you haven’t already - here's the link.)Now, a year later, a lot has happened since that fateful episode. The rollercoaster has continued, but this time with more amazing successes and achievements. James' startup PickStar got funded, launched new tech, grew significantly and the future looks bright .. and yet, of course, ’the unknown' always remains. So in this episode, Andrew put Begs under the microscope … enjoy the insights and reflections.Rooster Radio is hosted by Andrew Montesi and James Begley - visit http://roosterradio.bizConnect with Rooster Radio - sign up to our mailing list at http://roosterradio.biz and join our Facebook community at http://facebook.com/roosterradioHQFor podcasting strategy, production and commercial services, visit Apiro Media http://apiropodcasts.comFor other content and marketing services, visit Apiro Consulting http://apiroconsulting.com (Andrew Montesi). For leadership and and high performance services, connect with James Begley http://jamesbegley.com.au

Our guest Mick Colliss always dreamed of playing for Australia. He competed in everything from rugby union to lawn balls, but in his own words, he wasn't good enough at any of the sports he tried. Then, when all hope seemed lost, he discovered Sudoku, the puzzle game that appears in pretty much every newspaper, every day, all over the world. He wasn't any good at that either. In fact, he'd never even played Sudoku before. But .. somehow .. Mick and three mates formed an Australian Sudoku team, and travelled to India to represent his country at the World Sudoku Championships. It’s an amazing story, one that Mick now tells as a highly sought-after keynote speaker. He pinches himself when speaking at events alongside his sporting heroes like John Eales, Alissa Camplin and Steve Bradbury. And while he’s not a star athlete or gold medallist, there are many lessons that can be learned from Mick’s story. You can book Mick Colliss through PickStar, the best place to book sports stars and personalities for any event, campaign or engagement you can imagine. Ben Darwin won two Bledisloe Cups with the Wallabies before an horrific neck injury that could have been fatal. He was lucky to recover but it did end his career.Ben talks about the personal impact - a bumpy career transition, a relationship breakdown and ultimately a diagnoses of depression and ADHD.Ben’s rebuild began with coaching, then, when pouring through player transfer data he noticed trends linked to team performance - the teams with a high turnover of athletes, even if they were bringing in stars, weren’t achieving the same success of cohesive teams. These findings would lead to the establishment of Gain Line, Ben’s company that focuses on the unique field of cohesion analytics. Ben has discovered a formula for team success that is now sought after by the world’s leading teams to improve performance, including the English Premier League, NBA, Twenty20 cricket, NRL and AFL.Ben talks about what he has learned about the secret sauce of the most successful teams, whether skill and culture are overrated, tough conversations with coaches, the most cohesive and least cohesive leagues and teams in the world and which teams he predicts will have success this season based on Gain Line’s metrics.Find out more about Gain Line here - http://www.gainline.biz/Want to book Ben Darwin for an event or other opportunity? Our Off-Field podcast is produced by PickStar, the best place to book sports stars for any event, campaign or engagement you can imagine.
