On today's episode of the podcast Alan sits down with Jeff and Terra Mattson for a great conversation about warning signs leaders need to be aware of and pay attention to. Jeff and Terra recently spoke at our Healthy Leaders Summit.  About Jeff and Terra Living Wholehearted founders Jeff & Terra Mattson are passionate about living lives that reflect integrity, healing, and authenticity. They met in 1998 at Seattle Pacific University where they first began to hone their skills and passion for leadership and relationships under Psychologists and relationship experts Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott, Theologians Drs. Tim & Kerry Dearborn and Dr. Rick Steele, as well as attorney and change-agent, Dr. Skip Lee. Later influences have included CEO & Executive Director of the Charitable Murdock Trust Dr. Steve Moore, Bill Thralls and Bruce McNicol of Trueface Ministries, Dr. Michelle Watson-Canfield of the Abba Project, Dr. Ken Canfield of the National Center for Fathering, and their own Pastor and his wife, Bill & Kathy Towne. Together, Jeff & Terra have over 20 years of experience in the helping professions and leadership development. Jeff holds a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington and has decades of experience as a leader in start-up companies, family businesses, and non-profit organizations including universities and ministry settings. Since 2011, he has worked with business and organizational leaders to develop their potential and solve the people-issues that keep them up at night!  He is master-level certified in the Core Values Index (CVI) and a certified facilitator of Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott’s SYMBIS program (Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts).  Some of his organizational development clients include TriMet, ASSIST International, Bridgewell Resources, Subway, Stoel Rives Law Firm, The Dentist Off Main, Door to Grace, and Rolling Hills Community Church. Terra holds a master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from George Fox University in Portland, Oregon. For the last fifteen years, she has run a thriving private practice while presenting to women, couples, and leaders in various settings including the American Association of Christian Counselors World Conference (2009, 2011, 2017). She is the Clinical Director for Living Wholehearted Counseling and has served as an adjunct professor with George Fox University’s Graduate Counseling Department. She has previous experience in community mental health, human resources, entrepreneurship, and pastoral/church ministries. She is the author of Courageous: Being Daughter Rooted in Grace (David C. Cook, 2020) and the visionary for the Courageous Gathering, a virtual conference-on-the-go resourcing women for the issues of today.  Together, Jeff and Terra co-authored Shrinking the Integrity Gap: Between What Leaders Preach and Live (David C. Cook, 2020) and founded a global movement, Courageous Girls, an online resource to help moms navigate the needs of their daughters at every stage of their growing years. They are the co-hosts of the Living Wholehearted Podcast and run the Living Wholehearted Lodge and Retreat. They truly enjoy having to live what they preach as they teach, speak, write, and lead together.  The Mattson’s and the Living Wholehearted Team are a trusted resource for the community. Many people ask how counseling, leadership coaching, and organizational development all go together. It’s simple. Though we all try to compartmentalize our lives, we were never meant to live that way. Attempting to segregate our heart from our mind, or our work from our home, or our pain from our story, impacts all of our relationships, with ourselves, God, and others. Combining the disciplines of counseling, coaching, and organizational development makes for a well-rounded approach that is rarely offered. Their clinical team of counselors help those who are ready to embrace their pain and walk towards wholeness. Their executive coaches and organizational leadership team come alongside business and organizational leaders who seek to help their people thrive at work and life.  Often this means helping leaders unravel the complexities of relationships within their particular venues. Whether a family or a large organization, all are systems made up of the most valuable resources…people. Living Wholehearted was formed to help these systems thrive, and then influence for the greater good. Jeff & Terra currently live outside Portland, Oregon raising their two teen daughters. In their spare time, they love adventures in the great outdoors, including fly-fishing, camping, and outdoor movies. Jeff is a singer/songwriter and lover of all things college football (Go Ducks!). Terra enjoys painting with her youngest daughter or reading a book alongside with her oldest. She loves deep conversations alongside a gooey caramel latte and long walks on the beach (with or without Jeff). Some of their favorite authors and thinkers include Bob Dylan, Henri Nouwen, Dietrich Bonheoffer, the guys at Trueface Ministries (Bill, Bruce, & John), Curt Thompson, and of course, C.S. Mule deer are remarkably faithful to the geographies they were raised in... until they're not. Ungulate ecologist Rhiannon Jakopak from the Monteith Shop joins us to talk about rogue individuals, migration fidelity, the rose petal hypothesis, and more. Plus, the emotions of harvesting your first animal (slash ANY animal).  4:00 From vegetarianism to wildlife science to becoming a hunter with your sci-pals in tow 6:00 Taking a life... you process it while you're literally processing it. The complicated feelings are normal; they don't need to go away 12:00 Those hunting mentors who make you feel encouraged, not pressured 14:00 A first-time mule deer harvest: Watching an individual deer for weeks before getting a shot on it at 28 yards.... and just like that, a life is changed 17:00 Knowing your local mule deer as individuals... so much so that you recognize certain animals in friends' harvest photos 19:00 Transition from bow- to rifle-hunting... there's a different feel to the hunt 23:00 The Rose Petal Hypothesis - this idea that female deer establish home ranges that are adjacent to and overlapping those of the female parent and sisters in a manner that looks like the petals unfolding on a rose 24:00 Mule deer have high fidelity (faithfulness to preferred geographies) and philopatry (those places near where they were born/reared) 28:00 Because of high site fidelity/philopatry, mule deer are especially slow to fill habitat vacuums... if we inadvertently remove them from a landscape, it can take a long time for new deer to show up 31:00 Combining knowledge from the science world with the place-based experience of hunters, ranchers, and other intimate land users 32:00 Rogue deer do colonize new habitats! They completely buck the fidelity/philopatry pattern, especially with their winter range 36:00 The first year of an animal's life is crucial for establishing the behaviors that'll govern behavior later on - rogue deer go rogue as yearlings 39:00 Mule deer have generally low fawn survival... but they also typically have two fawns per year 41:00 Scientist #facepalm: when all 50 collared fawns in your study die 45:00 Why is it so fun to pick on bird people? Jokes aside, they have some SOLID science on taught vs. inherent migration 48:00 Do relatively common species lose their mystique for us? Heck no. Next time you see a deer on the side of the highway, ask yourself how many mountain ranges it crossed in the past year 52:00 Those big antlers on your buck? They're a symbol of an intelligent species on healthy, connected habitat... be reverent, everyone! 57:00 How do we tell compelling science stories? 1:02 We're in an unprecedented era of everyone caring how we communicate/reach each other 1:06 The good news: Everyone cares about mule deer. The bad news: We disagree what's going on with them 1:08 Scientists as arbiters of information for policymakers 1:13 UngulateCompendium.org - a place to get involved and be in the loop on new science; Also @Monteith.Shop on Insta

The 2020 fire season in the US has seen another historic year, with record breaking fires across the Western US. But fire is not new, it has been part of the Indigenous cultural landscape for millennia; not framed as something to be feared but rather as something to be embraced as an intentional part of stewardship. For this episode we unpack a bit about this relationship and what it can mean for land management moving forward.   This episode is co-hosted by first-year Cultural Heritage Management graduate student, Emily Dayhoff. Emily is a Southern Sierra Miwuk and currently works as a Cultural Demonstrator and Park Ranger in Yosemite National Park. She gives interpretive programs on her ancestors and a variety of other topics related to the park.  Emily often engages in conversations about Indigenous fire stewardship and cultural burns with park visitors. While in New York, Robin appeared in the soaps One Life to Live, Guiding Light and All My Children and also played Roy in the film Lone Star. His New York Theater credits include BECKETT at the National Art Theater and Jacob Marley in A CHRISTMAS CAROL. An idealist medical student with a serious Elvis obsession and a determination to perfect his rat-to-rat brain transfer discovers his beloved professor and mentor is secretly a mad scientist who embarks on a murderous spree to get 13 human brains for his own terrifying experiment. Written and Produced by Richard Gasparian and Robin Nuyen Filmed entirely in 1987, Housesitter...The Night They Saved Siegfried’s Brain sat unfinished for thirty-two years. Now, with post-sound from Skywalker Sound and final picture from Paramount Pictures color department, it is at last completed. Combining 1980’s horror and 1950’s sci-fi, it is the story of Andy, an idealist medical student with a serious Elvis obsession, who is determination to perfect his rat-to-rat brain transfer to “help mankind and change the face of modern science”. After his final experiment fails and blows up, Andy loses his chance to travel abroad and study at the prestigious Reinhardt Institute. With his future in doubt, and with no place to live, his future looks bleak. Little does Andy know that his beloved professor and mentor, Doc Crosby, is actually a mad scientist who has been murdering people and stealing their brains for experiments in his makeshift “black and white” laboratory. When Doc realizes that his own brains so severely damaged from experimenting on himself, and that he will be dead in a matter of hours without a successful brain transfer, he hatches a scheme to acquire the thirteen human brains needed for his “brain pyramid”. Knowing that Andy is homeless and that college kids can’t resist having big parties, Doc invites Andy to housesit while he goes away on “business”. After he frees his deranged lab assistant from the insane asylum, and with his house now full of healthy unsuspecting college kids, Doc’s trap is set. When the party begins, so does the deadly game of cat and mouse. Will Andy save his friends from the scalpel of a madman, or will Doc succeed in his murderous plot to save his own life by completing the first even human brain transference procedure? From Robin Nuyen, and written and produced by Richard Gasparian and Robin Nuyen, Housesitter : The Night They Saved Siegfried’s Brain stars Holly Kaplan (‘’American Crime Story’’, Shocker), Robert Small (Flight of the Navigator, “Seaquest 2032”), and Stephen James Carver (“Star Trek : The Next Generation”, “Star Trek : Deep Space Nine”). Creating a Killer Black Friday Campaign, Ep 172

Black Friday is a huge opportunity to give your bottom line a shot in the arm and get your message or product in front of your customers. People are already in buying mode and eager to spend money.   Yet a lot of businesses hesitate to give their business that influx of cash because they believe one of the following myths:   My business isn’t the ‘right kind’ for a Black Friday campaign An effective Black Friday campaign requires rock-bottom pricing I have to create a brand new offer   It’s not as difficult as you may believe to craft an irresistible offer that compels people to buy. It doesn’t need to be new. And you absolutely do NOT need to “race to the bottom.”   This week’s episode is jam-packed with strategies you can use to create Black Friday campaigns from your current offers; with ideas for quickly creating new offers; and with real-life examples to tease your Black Friday offer in a way that creates scarcity and builds excitement for that influx of cash on Black Friday weekend.   Whether you need fresh inspiration to create this year’s Black Friday campaign, or just have no idea where to start with a Black Friday offer, find the answers you need in this week’s episode.   Avoiding The Race To The Bottom Slashing prices is the easiest way to create a Black Friday offer, but is it the best way? Not according to James! He actually calls it the WORST way. (What if you don’t have the margins to discount your products?) Creating a juicy and profitable Black Friday offer comes down to choosing something your customers want so badly, price becomes a non-issue. Catch this episode for examples of what that an offer like that can look like. Why There’s Still Time A killer Black Friday offer doesn’t mean you have to create entirely new products. That’s definitely a great option, but it’s not the only option. Consider a valuable live training--such as a masterclass--for anyone who buys a certain product. That product can be digital, but online trainings work great for physical products, too. Here’s Where To Start With Your Offer If you don’t yet have an offer together, first, sit down (with your team if you have one) and look at all the offers you DO have. What can you do with them? And make sure that whatever you’re doing, you’re equipped to handle the volume. Start mapping things out NOW, so you’re prepared for that influx. James and Dean go over this in more detail in the episode (including how to avoid aggravating your customers because you’re not prepared). Don’t Censor Your Ideas When you sit down to brainstorm, NEVER censor your ideas, or your team’s. Even if they seem beyond insane, let them fly. The point of brainstorming isn’t to share “the best” ideas. It’s to turn the creativity faucet on full-blast, which cannot happen if you’re judging your ideas. No, makeup brushes that include a hot pink zebra won’t be your winner, but it might trigger the WINNING idea for your Black Friday offer. Bring on those ideas! Build Excitement And Create Scarcity Dean and his wife have their cosmetic ecommerce company’s Black Friday campaign ready to go. It will be their third year running a Black Friday campaign, and they’ve got all sorts of strategies in play to create excitement and scarcity. There’s a LOT of great ideas you can model for your Black Friday campaign. Take notes on this part of the episode. Outline of This Episode When people are buying, they want to keep buying [5:15] Avoiding the “need” to discount [9:30] Combining physical with digital [15:15] Where to start [21:18] How to brainstorm ideas (and how not to) [24:45] Designing your campaign [34:49] Building excitement and scarcity [40:10] Music for “Just The Tips” is titled, “Happy Happy Game Show” by Kevin MacLeod (http://incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License Connect With James and Dean James P. When one thinks of the top rock albums of 1991, undoubtedly certain classics come to mind. Nirvana's "Nevermind." Pearl Jam's "Ten." "Achtung Baby" by U2. Metallica's so-called "Black Album." Guns'n'Roses even released "Use Your Illusion I & II" that year. But when Spin magazine unveiled its best album of the year, that honor went to Scotland's Teenage Fanclub for their "Bandwagonesque." And for good reason. Combining early-90s crunch and distortion with odes to the pop goodness of the likes of Big Star, "Bandwagonesque" is as complete and inspiring as anything else that came out that year. We dare you to listen to it and not be drawn in by the melodic hooks, syrupy harmonies, or the relatable lyrics. Teenage Fanclub may be the most underrated-yet-influential band of the last 30 years. And this album shows why.

There are a couple reasons why this is the coolest part of the year, and the main one that Matt and Garrett talk about today concerns the many opportunities available in this season to call and connect with your people. This has been a year like no other, magnifying the importance of this contact, and the coming season offers even more opportunities to continue to demonstrate your care and concern for the people in your life.   Our hosts begin by reviewing the impact of calling up people in times of collective stress to sincerely check in on how they’re doing, as well as the advantages that live-flow offers, the power of human connection, and the difference between Ninja and many other systems. They then discuss the nature of these calls, the specific opportunities available now, and increasing the frequency of touch points through combining communication methods. They finish by sharing the process for determining who you could consider contacting, and precisely where the real connections happen. As Ninjas, sincere concern for others and learning more about them is a cornerstone upon which to build the types of relationships that will prove beneficial to both your life and business. Today’s episode guides you in the process of ensuring you achieve this throughout the entire year, and especially in the coming months.   Episode Highlights:     Calling people in times of collective stress   Auto-flow vs. live-flow   Helping people beyond real estate   The power of the human connection   The difference between Ninja and many other systems   Making conversations all about them   The opportunities that are out there right now to call people   Combining methods of communication to increase touch point frequency   Creating your list of who to contact   Where the real connections happen   Quotes:   “When this year started it was a normal year.”   “Take care of your mindset, get on the phone.”   “When we’re all dealing with stress…these are the opportunities to make sure your energy’s in a great place, and pick up the phone and make a phone call.”   “We all have the opportunity to just build this human connection together through the power of a simple phone call.”   “All these phone calls are not trying to find out where the deal is, the phone calls are really trying to connect with people and understand the world that they’re living in right now, and to show care and concern for what’s going on.”   “Do not get attached to the outcome.”   “Our job is to keep them talking.”   “This is an opportunity to check in with them and see, are those traditions happening the same way through December?”   “Celebrate with them!”   “Make sure your warm list is included in this action program.”   “Have some fun with it.”   “This will come back to you in first, second, third month of 2021.”   “There’s people out there that will need your help at this time with too many life changes coming on.”   Links:   www.TheNinjaSellingPodcast.com Email us at TSW@TheNinjaSellingPodcast.com Ninja Selling www.NinjaSelling.com @ninjasellingofficial Ninja Coaching: www.NinjaCoaching.com @ninja.coaching Garrett garrett@ninjacoaching.com @ninjaredding Matt matt@ninjacoaching.com @matthewjbonelli
