Medium and podcast host Jonathan Mark joins Kate to discuss three unsolved cases, two featured in volume 5 of Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix. Philadelphia high school teacher Susan Reinert was murdered in 1979, and her two children Karen and Michael have never been found. On June 4, 2019, a pair of kayakers stumbled upon two dead bodies in the Cleveland Metroparks' Rocky River Reservation. The two people, Carnell Sledge and Katherine Brown, were good friends who had met up in the park for reasons that remain unknown. M.T. Anderson heard tales of cattle mutilation back when he was in high school. Mat Carter's friend first heard about it in the 1970s. But in recent years, both ranchers have had firsthand experience with strange phenomenon, discovering some of their own livestock brutalized, with surgical-style incisions and tongues and/or organs missing. In each instance, there were no footprints or any indication that the cattle had been attacked by another animal. Perhaps strangest of all, there was no blood. There have been thousands of similar cases reported across the United States and Canada. On June 22, 1979, English teacher, Susan Reinert and her two children, 11-year-old Karen and 10-year-old Michael set out to brave a hailstorm to take a trip for the weekend to Allentown, Pennsylvania where she would be holding a presentation for a group she was a member of. Her battered and naked body was found three days later in the trunk of her orange hatchback in a parking lot in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania which was 90 miles from her home. William Bradfield and Jay C. Smith, fellow employees of Susan were suspects due to a tangled web of stories created by Bradfield to his circle of friends. Bradfield had been a lover of Susan's and Jay C. Smith was the principal of the school they all worked at, who somehow got roped into the murder story by Bradfield. The trials set out to untangle the chaotic web created by Bradfield and find the real murder (s) and locate the children, but the bodies of Susan's children, Karen and Michael have never been found. In 1979, high school teacher Susan Reinert got in her car with her two kids to head to a speaking engagement the following morning. She never showed, and she and her children were never seen alive again. (This case is sometimes called the Main Line Murders due to the area of Philadelphia where Susan lived.) Following the arrest of Bill Bradfield in April of 1983, his fate began to look grim.In the ensuing trial, prosecutors would manage to successfully link Bradfield to Susan Reinert's death, as well as at least one other "unnamed co-conspirator" (who many at the time believed to be Bradfield's longtime associate, Jay Smith). Over the next several years, this story would continue to play out, providing answers to some of the overarching questions that had been haunting those in the Main Line region of Pennsylvania, while ignoring the others, which remain unanswered to this day...Part 3/3 Episode hosted, produced, and research/writing by Micheal WhelanOriginal music created by Micheal Whelan through Amper MusicTheme music created and composed by Ailsa TravesProducers: Maggyjames, Roberta Janson, Ben Krokum, Peggy Belarde, Quil Carter, Laura Hannan, Victoria Reid, Gabriella Bromley, Damion Moore, Amy Hampton, Steven Wilson, Scott Meesey, Marie Vanglund, Scott Patzold, Astrid Kneier, Lori Rodriguez, Aimee McGregor, Danny Williams, Sydney Scotton, Sara Moscaritolo, Sue Kirk, Thomas Ahearn, Seth Morgan, Marion Welsh, Patrick Laakso, Kelly Jo Hapgood, Alyssa Lawton, Meadow Landry, Rebecca Miller, Tatum Bautista, gravityheadzero, Erin Pyles, Jo Wong, Teunia Elzinga, Consuelo Moreno, Travis Scsepko, Jacinda B., and Jared MidwoodLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or Producer
In the years after Susan Reinert's body was discovered, investigators would struggle to latch on to available leads. Early on, investigators had begun to probe the backstories of two men - Jay Smith and Bill Bradfield - but had no concrete evidence linking them to the case. Both men had shady pasts, and undeniable links to the victim (as well as to each other), but were seemingly beyond reproach. Over the next several years, a delicate game of cat-and-mouse would be played throughout the court system. But what started out as a civil suit between Bradfield and Susan Reinert's loved ones would slowly morph into a full-on criminal investigation... We have covered murder, fraud, and wide-reaching conspiracies. Today’s case has all three. In 1979, high school teacher Susan Reinert’s body was found in the trunk of her car. That same day, both of her children disappeared. Was there really a conspiracy amongst the school faculty to get rid of Susan? What was their motive? And were they ever brought to justice? This is True Crimecast.
In this episode, the investigation into Susan Reinert's murder and the disappearance of her two children continues. The investigators dig into the lives of Bill Bradfield and his entourage, and they begin to zero in on Dr. Jay Smith as well. Bill's posse begin dropping him, one by one, and Bill does NOT handle these "betrayals" well. Some key evidence surfaces. The pieces of the puzzle are starting to fall into place, and justice is on the horizon.Follow us, campers!Patreon: https://patreon.com/TrueCrimeCampfireFacebook: True Crime CampfireInstagram: https://gramha.net/profile/truecrimecampfire/19093397079Twitter: @TCCampfire https://twitter.com/TCCampfire
In this episode, Bill Bradfield shares more details about his private "hit man lessons" with Dr. Smith. Smith is out on bail awaiting sentencing for the Sears robbery, and Bill tells his entourage that Susan Reinert is in more danger now than ever. If Smith is going to strike, it will be before his sentencing. As for Susan herself, she was stunned when she realized that Bill had testified in Dr. Smith's Sears robbery trial. She had evidence that Bill's testimony was perjured, and she couldn't figure out why a man like Bill, a man of such perfect integrity, would lie on the stand. She knew he must have had a good reason, and she was determined to get it out of him--it was, she told her friends, a dealbreaker. And Susan's actions leading up to her murder become more and more secretive and strange. Upper Merion is about to be rocked to its core by the worst murder case it has ever seen. In this episode, we learn a LOT more about the supposed "hit man lessons" going on between Bill and Dr. Smith, and Bill tells his entourage some dark secrets about both Smith and Susan Reinert. Bill does a few very suspicious favors for Smith. Smith goes on trial for the Sears robbery, and Bill testifies on his behalf, despite his new knowledge of Smith's murderous proclivities. Upper Merion is headed over a cliff, and no one seems interested in doing anything to stop it. In episode 1, we learn about the major players in this bizarre true story. There's William Sidney Bradfield, a.k.a. Bill--a handsome, charismatic teacher of English, Latin and Greek at Upper Merion High School. Adored by students and colleagues alike, Bill is a larger than life figure with larger than life stories that may or may not be true. And there's Dr. Jay C. Smith, retired Army Colonel and principal of Upper Merion High. Nicknamed The Prince of Darkness by colleagues, Dr. Smith is unlike anything this respectable community has ever seen, with his eccentric habits and unsettling eyes. He may make people uncomfortable with his perverted jokes and bizarre conversation, but no one knows (yet) about Dr. Smith's dark secret life. Then there's Susan Reinert, a kindhearted teacher and mother of two whose deadly mistake will be to put her trust in the hands of the wrong man.
