Medium and podcast host Jonathan Mark joins Kate to discuss three unsolved cases, two featured in volume 5 of Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix. Philadelphia high school teacher Susan Reinert was murdered in 1979, and her two children Karen and Michael have never been found. On June 4, 2019, a pair of kayakers stumbled upon two dead bodies in the Cleveland Metroparks' Rocky River Reservation. The two people, Carnell Sledge and Katherine Brown, were good friends who had met up in the park for reasons that remain unknown. M.T. Anderson heard tales of cattle mutilation back when he was in high school. Mat Carter's friend first heard about it in the 1970s. But in recent years, both ranchers have had firsthand experience with strange phenomenon, discovering some of their own livestock brutalized, with surgical-style incisions and tongues and/or organs missing. In each instance, there were no footprints or any indication that the cattle had been attacked by another animal. Perhaps strangest of all, there was no blood. There have been thousands of similar cases reported across the United States and Canada. The National Women's Soccer League said it wants to expand from 12 to 16 teams by 2026. Cleveland is one of the cities bidding for an expansion team. The decision will be finalized by the end of this year. The Cleveland Soccer Group, which is leading the effort to bring professional women's soccer to the region, recently made a deal with the Cleveland Metroparks to build a new stadium if Cleveland wins the expansion team. The stadium would be built across the street from Progressive Field and seat more than 12,000 fans. The cost projected around $150 million, would be funded in part by ownership investment and state and local funding. On Thursday's "Sound of Ideas," we're going to dive in to the excitement behind these efforts as well as the challenges, with a panel of expert guests. Later, we'll hear another installment of our music podcast, "Shuffle."

Holden Forest & Gardens is seeding Ohio's forested future through the Holden Seed Bank at the Holden Arboretum, which will soon celebrate its first anniversary. In this episode, we speak with Seed Bank Manager Kim Lessman about how this "restoration" seed bank works, how she became its manager, and how her work forms the core of new climate-fighting reforestation efforts across the region by eliminating a bottleneck in local tree planting efforts - the need for seeds. The Holden Seed Bank collects and processes seeds from native "workhorse" tree species like hickories, oaks, and hemlocks, which local nurseries grow into seedlings to support regional restoration projects and tree planting efforts. The work of the Holden Seed Bank is helping build resilient, biodiverse forests that can face our changing climate by providing thousands and thousands of seeds of local ecotype collected in our region. A Celebration of Seeds event will be held on August 8 at the Cleveland Botanical Garden and feature panelists from Holden Seed Bank, Cleveland Metroparks, the Pollinator Project, and Wild Ones Greater Cleveland to celebrate its one-year anniversary. Join us as we talk with Museum Educator Ashley Hall about her career as a museum educator at the Museum of the Rockies, her research on Sauropod feet and her books including Fossils for Kids: A Junior Scientist's Guide to Dinosaur Bones and Ancient Animals, and Prehistoric Life on Earth and Prehistoric Worlds: Stomp Into the Epic Lands Ruled by Dinosaurs (due out at the end of March 2024). Ashley is a dynamic paleontologist, naturalist, and museum educator. Originally from South Bend, Indiana, she grew up loving dinosaurs from an early age and was inspired by holiday trips to Chicago's Field Museum to pursue a career in natural history. Ashley earned her Bachelor of Arts in anthropology (focus: Zooarchaeology) and animal behavior from Indiana University, Bloomington. After graduation, she spent nearly a decade working as a science educator for various educational institutions in southern California, including the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and the La Brea Tar Pits. During this time, Ashley also served as the assistant curator of paleontology at the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology in Claremont, California. While with the “Alf,” she managed the fossil collection and participated in fieldwork including Late Cretaceous dinosaur excavations in the Grand-Staircase Escalante National Monument in Utah and Miocene mammal reconnaissance paleontology in the Mojave Desert's Rainbow Basin. Ashley relocated to Ohio where she worked as a naturalist for the Cleveland Metroparks reservation system before taking a position with the Cleveland Museum of Natural as the adult programs coordinator. When Ashley is not educating the public in person, she is an active science communicator on social media. Ashley has presented several invited workshops on communicating science through social media at professional, scientific meetings, including the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology and the Association for Materials and Methods in Paleontology annual conferences. Her scientific research has focused on sauropod claw morphology and function and the evolution of birds from deposits at the La Brea Tar Pits.

On this episode of Open Space Radio, we’re celebrating our birthday! We started Open Space Radio a little over three years ago, and while many of you may have heard us talk about the early days of finding our podcasting groove — with not a whole lot of podcasting experience to pull from — we like to invite you, our listeners, in every once in a while to reflect back on some of our favorite Open Space Radio moments from the past. And we’ve had a lot of favorite moments. Three years later, we still feel so lucky to be able to share with you the conversations we get to have with park and recreation professionals and other incredible people who are truly improving the quality of life for the people in their communities. Since we recently celebrated our official third birthday, we thought it would be a good time to look back on our three most-downloaded episodes to date and share some of our thoughts, as well as give you a bit of a preview of a past episode you may have missed! Tune in to the full episode below to listen to our reflections on the past three years and hear clips from these past episodes: 1:42: Episode 24, “How Risk Play Can Benefit Kids” On this episode, we spoke with Tom Norquist, president of the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA) about how risk and adventure play is stepping back into the limelight and helping kids’ independence and creativity. We reflect on how this episode is still really relevant today – for one, because of the increased awareness we’re currently seeing around the need for outdoor recreation during the pandemic, and also because we recently worked with IPEMA on guidance for safely using playgrounds during the pandemic. 5:57: Episode 46, “Esports at the Rec Center?” On this episode, we spoke with Neelay Bhatt, vice president of PROS Consulting and past NRPA board member, about what esports are, their impact on parks and recreation and the potential opportunities they present. We reflect on how esports and virtual programming can bridge a gap and reach audiences that haven’t typically participated in traditional park and recreation offerings, and how esports are going to increase in popularity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 12:48: Episode 61: “How Park and Recreation Leaders are Addressing Coronavirus” On this episode, we talked with Jesús Aguirre, Superintendent of Seattle Parks and Recreation and NRPA board member, Brian Zimmerman, CEO of Cleveland Metroparks, and Adriane Clutter, Division Chief at Montgomery County Recreation in Maryland, about how each of them was responding to COVID-19 at the time (March 10, 2020) in their respective areas of the country. We reflect on how the stats for this episode are so shocking to look at now compared to when we recorded the episode – for example, at the time of recording for this episode, there were only 432 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.S., compared to the more than 5 million current cases. We also discuss our admiration for how well park and recreation professionals have pivoted to serve their communities during such a challenging time (be sure to also listen to the May, June and September bonus episodes for more on this). Thank you so much for your support and for listening to Open Space Radio over the years. We truly love being able to produce this podcast for you and can’t wait to see what the next three years bring! As always, if you have any ideas for future episodes, reach out! Video of the Week: 2018 Age Group National Championships Highlight Video Don't Fry Bacon Naked: One of my most memorable training seasons was the year that I experimented with an online, off the shelf, plan. What was unique about this plan was it's emphasis on "quality" workouts instead of "junk miles". The theory being that the high intensity training is really where the value of training lies. The approach of the plan was for the athlete to spend a greater percentage of your training on high intensity and reduce the time consuming long workouts. This plan allocated very few days for recovery. In fact, I think it was three weeks before I had the first "recovery" day on my calendar. At about 9-10 weeks into the plan, myself and a couple of other friends that were doing the same plan all got sick. We were showing all the symptoms of overtraining. It took some adjustments to avoid additional overtraining that season. Since then, I have come to appreciate and respect the generally accepted 80/20 rule as espoused by every expert, coach and pro athlete that has been on this podcast. The theory with this approach is that 80% of training should be easy and is extremely valuable. It allows for the physiological adaptations for aerobic endurance and does not over stress the body, allowing for faster recovery to be ready for the hard workouts when they have to be done. Regardless of approach, overtraining is a risk. You can reach equally high levels of stress with a high volume of 80/20 training, and it's important that you allow the body to recover adequately between workouts and training blocks like the traditional 3 week mesocycle. Training Stress Balance Signs of Over Training Testing for Over Training "What's New in the 303": Ironman Boulder 70.3, Chris Leiferman prevailed to take first place with a time of 3:44:32. On today’s episode, we’re talking about pet peeves. We know how much passion you have for your communities and careers as park and recreation professionals, but we also know that there’s always that one thing that continues to irk you. On our 25th episode, we asked you to let us know some of the things that you deal with in your career in parks and recreation that really annoy you, and you answered the call. We met up with a few of our listeners at the 2018 NRPA Annual Conference in Indianapolis to hear a little more about their park and recreation pet peeves, and while some of them are things you would probably assume park and rec professionals have to deal with, you might also learn a thing or two (we did)! Here’s a sneak peak at the pet peeves in this episode (listen to the show for more): Samantha Marsden, Central Park Conservancy (1:08) — “Being in New York City, one of my pet peeves is when people — they do it in parks, too, of course — is when they spit on the sidewalk. Any type of bodily fluid, I can’t stand it. It makes me want to gag, or puke, or something.” Brittanie Propes, Excelsior Springs Parks and Recreation (2:43) — “We bring our families out [to our public parks and trails] for a fresh air experience, and you really ruin it for us when you smoke.” Nancy Desmond, Cleveland Metroparks (3:13) — “There’s toxins in those cigarette butts, and it’s just not good for the health and wellness of the park visitors or the nature that it affects.” Trillby Berry-Tayman, Washington Township Park (3:37) — “When the community asks for a program, I find a sponsor to cover the costs, and then my community doesn’t show up.” Mark Foote, City of Chandler Parks and Recreation (5:23) — “Trying to take square millennials and fit them into our round holes. I think as recreation professionals, a lot of times we have this old-school way of thinking of taking these new kids and fitting them into our systems. We have to adapt to who these kids are.”
