Barring a miracle, Juan Soto isn't signing with the Phillies. He has received multiple $600 million offers, according to Fair Territory's Ken Rosenthal. Soto could make a decision before the end of next week's Winter Meetings in Dallas. We said on this show last week that the Phillies had not met with Soto. We even wondered if an offer would be made. It turns out, the Phillies have not made an offer.None of this should come as a surprise. The Phillies were never considered serious suitors for Soto, despite speculation. Elevated levels of arsenic have been detected in the Waikato River, affecting water supplies in Auckland and Waikato. The Government has been briefed this evening and sought assurances that water supplies are safe. Authorities are carrying out further testing with results due back tomorrow. Watercare is also rejigging the way it processes water to reduce the amount of arsenic in the city's water supply but said there was no immediate concern to public health. Steve Taylor, head of operations at Water Services Authority (WSA), told Newstalk ZB there had been increased levels of arsenic recorded in the Waikato River, affecting water supplies in Auckland and Hamilton. He said there was “naturally a level of arsenic” in the river, but it had been notified levels had increased recently. “I'm not sure what the reason for that increase is and that is affecting water supplies in Auckland and Hamilton,” he said. He explained the maximum acceptable value for arsenic is 0.01mg a litre – an “incredibly low amount” – but they had seen levels around 0.013mg, which is “marginally above the acceptable value for drinking water”. “The level of arsenic is above what we've described as a maximum acceptable value, but it's not at a level that we would suggest has a significant health effect. “There's no health risk in drinking that water,” Taylor said. “What we would expect is that those levels of arsenic would reduce over time.” Elevated readings of arsenic have been recorded in the Waikato River. Photo / Waikato District Council. Taylor said it is safe for people to keep drinking tap water. “The key thing about the maximum acceptable value for arsenic is it's designed for long-term exposure, so it's not an acute level. ”Unlike some other levels, you know, if you exceed that level, it has an immediate health effect – that's not the case with these levels.” Taylor said the WSA was only notified of the elevated levels on Wednesday and it had been “a very short-term situation”. ”We've contacted the [Waikato] regional council to try and understand what is the reason for this change in source water,” he said. Local Government Minister Simeon Brown has been briefed on the issue this evening. Photo / Mark Mitchell Local Government Minister Simeon Brown said he had been briefed on the issue by the WSA this evening. “I have asked the WSA to ensure that water suppliers in Auckland and Hamilton are taking appropriate steps, and that they communicate with their customers,” Brown said. “The WSA is the lead agency for this issue and will be providing regular updates.” Watercare reduces production at Waikato Water Treatment Plant The Herald repeatedly sought comment from Watercare this afternoon and it responded shortly before 8pm, saying it had reduced production at its Waikato Water Treatment Plant since detecting the elevated result. Watercare CEO Mark Bourne said the Waikato River supplies about 20% of Auckland's drinking water. ”We treat the water at our Waikato Water Treatment Plant in Tūākau and distribute it throughout the metropolitan network. ”In most parts of Auckland, treated water from the Waikato River is blended with treated water from our dams. However, Pukekohe, Buckland, Clarks Beach/Waiau Pā, Patumahoe, Glenbrook Beach, and Drury south receive water solely sourced from the Waikato River.” Bourne said Watercare had increased production at its major Ardmore plant, which treats water from four dams in the Hūnua Ranges. “This extends the processing time at the plant, and we expect it to improve our ability to reduce the level of arsenic in the treated drinking water. “We're working closely with other agencies and will continue to share information as we learn more.” The current minor exceedance of the standards does not present any immediate concern for public health, Watercare said. A Waikato District Council spokesperson said Watercare operates the local water networks in the area under contract. “Pōkeno and Tūākau are supplied by Watercare's Waikato Water Treatment Plant. There are also treatment plants that serve the townships of Huntly, Te Kauwhata, Meremere, Taupiri and Ngāruawāhia.” The spokesperson said samples from these plants were being tested, with results due tomorrow. Hamilton City Council's water supply remained safe for drinking, bathing, cleaning and cooking, following test results that showed small increases in the level of arsenic present. What is arsenic? The Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora website describes arsenic as a substance found in rock, which in some situations “harms your health”. It commonly enters the body in food and water and people can swallow small amounts every day for a long time without any obvious health effects. But swallowing larger amounts may cause long-term health effects, arsenic poisoning or death. Someone with arsenic poisoning may suffer from: Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Extreme tiredness and bruising. An abnormal heartbeat. A “pins and needles” feeling in the hands and feet. Arsenic can not be removed from water by boiling it. ☕️Buy me a coffee: https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/support In this John Ondrasik interview: John's early songwriting was driven by a chip on his shoulder and a desire to be heard. We talked about the autobiographical nature of John's songs, the power of music to impact people's lives, the challenges of the music industry, the importance of speaking out against atrocities, how his ego has helped… and hindered him… and the low points and dark periods in his life. Specifically, being dropped by his record label and had to get a job, and the challenging time he faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. John emphasizes the importance of gratitude, taking care of yourself, and making decisions that align with your values John Ondrasik, better known as Five For Fighting, is a platinum selling multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter. To me, his songwriting is along the lines of the classic songwriters of the 60s & 70s like Elton John and Neil Diamond. John's released 6 studio LPs… has several hundred music licensing placements, many in well-known TV shows and movies… he co-manages his family's business, Precision Wire Products… and he's also an in-demand keynote speaker (watch his TedX presentation) Photo by Mike Donahue Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to John Ondrasik 02:02 Early Musical Influences and Songwriting 04:36 The Chip on John Androsik's Shoulder 06:04 Breakthrough Moments in his Career 12:19 Living in the Moment and Appreciating the Little Things 18:04 The Power of Will and Taking Risks 21:46 Positive Affirmations and Mindset 24:21 Reflecting on Mortality and the Meaning of Life 26:53 The Story Behind 'The Day I Died' 29:40 The Autobiographical Nature of John's Songs 30:11 The Power of Music to Impact Lives 36:14 Challenges in the Music Industry 43:25 Speaking Out Against Atrocities 49:10 The Role of Ego in the Music Business 53:52 Dealing with Low Points and Dark Periods in Life 58:41 The Challenges of the Music Industry 01:00:35 Navigating the Pandemic 01:04:23 The Traits that Contribute to Success 01:08:35 Gratitude and Making Decisions 01:11:39 The Power of Music 01:13:13 Speaking Your Mind Five For Fighting Upcoming Tour FIVE FOR FIGHTING FULL BAND TOUR DATES: Thursday, July 11 Hot Summer Nights Concert Series @ Municipal Lawn in Sherman, TX (Free Show) Saturday, July 27 @ Mystic Lake Casino, Mystic Amphitheater in Prior Lake, MN (Free Show) Tuesday, August 6 @ Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore.PA Thursday, August 8 @ Electric City in Buffalo, NY Friday, August 9, 2024 @ House of Blues, Cambridge Room in Cleveland, OH Saturday, August 10, 2024 @ St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit, MI Sunday, August 11, 2024 @ Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, MI Tuesday, August 13, 2024 @ Lincoln Theatre in Washington, DC Wednesday, August 14, 2024 @ Oceanfront Concerts Series, 24th Street Park in Virginia Beach, VA Friday, August 16, 2024 @ Cabot Theater in Beverly, MA Saturday, August 17, 2024 @ The Wolf Den At Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT (Free Show) Sunday, August 18, 2024 @ Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, NY Five For Fighting Quartet Shows Thurs, September 26 in Homer, NY at Center for the Arts of Homer Fri, September 27 in Saratoga Springs, NY at Universal Preservation Hall Sat, September 28 in Corning, NY at Corning Museum Of Glass Sun, September 29 in Bethel, NY at The Event Gallery at Bethel Woods October 1 in Oneonta, NY at Foothills Performing Arts Center October 3 in Nashua, NH at Nashua Center for the Arts October 4 in Laconia, NH at The Colonial Theatre Laconia October 5 in Bethlehem, NY at The Colonial Theatre October 6 in Waterville, ME at Waterville Opera House October 8 in Newport, RI at The JPT Film & Event Center October 9 in Red Bank, NJ at Count Basie Center for the Arts - The Vogel October 10 in Port Washington, NY at Landmark on Main Street
Winners of the annual Reach for the Stars astrophotography competition announced A massive star nearing the end of its life, a moonrise above Bray Head, the Milky Way from a cave and the Northern Lights, are among the 2024 winning images in the 'Reach for the Stars' astrophotography competition, run by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. Taking the winning prize in the 'Back on Earth - Landscape' category was an image of May's spectacular aurora borealis over Fanad Head Lighthouse in Donegal. The image, 'Fanad Head - Aurora 2024', was taken by Patryk Sadowski from Derry City. Tom O'Donoghue, from Malahide in Dublin, was the winner of the 'Back on Earth - Landmark' category. The winning image 'Sentinel' captures the Baltimore Beacon standing watch as the Milky Way rises over the ocean. Commenting on the winning images in the 'Back on Earth' categories, Professor Peter Gallagher, Head of Astrophysics at DIAS and a member of the judging panel for 'Reach for the Stars', said: "The photographer took advantage of the opportunity to shoot Fanad Head Lighthouse from a different perspective, and it paid off. Having seen lots of aurora shots this year, this one really stood out to us for the creativity and imagination. Tom O'Donoghue's 'Sentinel' shows how even the most familiar landmarks can still be captured in new ways. The judging panel loved how the Milky Way provided a stunning backdrop for the lone sentinel." Martin McCormack, from Glasnevin, Dublin claimed first prize in the 'Out of this World - Deep Sky' category. The winning image 'The Jewels of the Swan' captures the Crescent Nebula, a 25 light-year-wide emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. Featured in the image is a star at the centre of the nebula shedding its outer layers into space resulting in a dense shell of scorching hot material giving the nebula its shape. The winner in the 'Out of this World - Planetary' category with his image of the moon rising over Bray Head was Anthony Lynch from Stoneybatter, Dublin. Capturing this image involved a last-minute 200-yard dash down the beach for Anthony to ensure he had the shot lined up perfectly. Anthony also scooped the top prize in the Public Choice category. His image 'Cave Man' which captured the Milky Way from a cave at Goat Island, Ardmore, received the most votes in the online public vote. This year over 5,000 people cast their votes online for their favourite image. Prof. Gallagher continued, "Although the Crescent Nebula is a bright one, it can be notoriously difficult to capture. This photographer really put in the hours and studied their craft to create a beautiful image that is truly captivating. The moon rising over Bray Head is another example of a familiar landmark being captured in a new and creative way. We loved the simplicity of this image showcasing the journey the moon takes through our sky." The inaugural 'Night Sky in Your Hand' category was won by Seanie Morris, from Blueball, Co.Offaly, with his image 'Sam and Lucy's first BIG aurora', which shows the silhouettes of his children against the backdrop of May's spectacular aurora display. The images in this category had to be taken on a smartphone and without telescopes, of an astronomical scene. Judges' Feedback The winners were selected by a judging panel following a meticulous review process of over 200 entries. In addition to Prof. Peter Gallagher, the judging panel included Brenda Fitzsimons, former Picture Editor, The Irish Times; Michael McCreary, President, Irish Astronomical Society; and Niamh Breathnach, Director, Alice Public Relations. Commenting on the competition, Michael McCreary, President of the Irish Astronomical Society and member of the judging panel, said: "This is my second year to be involved in the judging process, and I continue to be amazed by what people are capturing in our night sky. The perseverance and attention to detail of all the entrants is evident in the images submitted to the competition this year - w...

Spirals began appearing in the Boyne Valley. First, in a dream when I was rounding cobblestoned streets searching for a place I vaguely remembered. Then, indelibly, among the neolithic moons carved into the mother stones at Newgrange in County Meath, where an invisible hand was believed to gesture to the dead on the briefest day of the year. The fiddle ferns seemed eager to converse at Ballymaloe, their shoulders smiling atop their green, springtime spines; and a cream-colored nautilus curled perfectly in my palm on a windswept beach in Ardmore. An acupuncturist friend explained how Chi travels through the body's meridians in spiral patterns. Spirals began opening in the intervals between musical harmonies and along the wooden banister in my father's home. And then, in meditation — massive, breathing spirals emanated like forest vines behind my eyes.“The spiral is a spiritualized circle. In the spiral form, the circle, uncoiled, has ceased to be vicious; it has been set free,” said the Russian American author and poet Vladimir Nabokov.Vedic people sensed this spiritualized circle moving through all creation — and reflected in the physical shape of the galaxies — as the interweaving power of creation itself. The universe does not manifest randomly but is expressed through an intricate matrix they gave the nomenclature Ṛta, a Sanskrit word that means “that which is joined together, order, truth, or architecture.”Ṛta is closely allied to the injunctions and ordinances thought to uphold it, collectively referred to as dharma, and the action of the individual in relation to those ordinances, referred to as karma (two terms that eventually eclipsed Ṛta in framing a sense of moral and religious order). Josh Schrei and I recently spoke about Ṛta with respect to its etymological connection to the words harmony, rite, art, order, rhythm, and ritual. But some facts do not square tidily with our notions of sacred geometry. Words and actions can unfurl in conscious or unconscious directions. We get caught in tired eddies of protection, maelstroms of othering, devastating tornadoes of forgetting. The beauty, the horror. We find ourselves asking — what vastness can contain all this?Scholar William Mahony explains Ṛta, this concept that encapsulates the centripetal and centrifugal movement of time and evolution, of energy and light, as follows: “Vedic thought holds that a true vision of a divine universe must necessarily include the brokenness of the world and that, in fact, it is precisely the imagination that is able to see the way the whole fits together despite the often disjointed nature of the parts.”So an uncoiling, integrative comprehension of reality must stretch to encompass the world's brokenness, Mahony counsels.Joanna Macy, an elder in environmental activism and deep ecology, is the visionary teacher of the Work that Reconnects, a roadmap for staying present to painful truths — the brokenness — while opening to the joy that comes with a renewed commitment to acting on behalf of a more just and humane world. The Spiral of the Work that Reconnects progresses through four stages as follows:(1) Gratitude. First, we must touch the ground. Gratitude resources our nervous systems. It links us to a flow of empathy and the inspiration to engage in the present moment and the world around us.(2) Grief. Here, we stop trying to bypass suffering with protection and privilege. “This world, in which we are born and take our being, is alive. It is … our larger body” (Coming Back to Life, Macy & Brown). We feel our interconnectedness. With support, we allow for the movement of sorrow, the broken-heartedness through which we can access vulnerability and courage toward change.(3) Seeing with New Eyes. “When we reconnect with life, by willingly enduring our pain for it, the mind retrieves its natural clarity” (Coming Back to Life, Macy & Brown). Opening to knowledge that has been suppressed and making room for our natural emotional responses can evoke greater equilibrium and clarity of thought. No longer unconsciously driven by aversion or grasping, sobriety can emerge — and with it, a more accurate understanding.(4) Going Forth. Awareness and reconnection naturally inspire a desire to be the change. Our personal mandate to contribute can awaken as we re-sensitize ourselves to the web of life. This is a creative process. It's about paying attention to how we can participate in the emergence of healing.Ken Wilber famously spent three years inventorying every known system worldwide—biological, medical, political, cultural, religious, psychological, spiritual, and philosophical—and arranging them into an integral theory. Wilber thus popularized Spiral Dynamics, based on the emergent cyclical theory of adult human development by Professor Clare Graves. As Graves explained: “Briefly, what I am proposing is that the psychology of the mature human being is an unfolding, emergent, oscillating, spiraling process marked by progressive subordination of older, lower-order behavior systems to newer, higher-order systems as man's existential problems change. These systems alternate between focus upon the external world, and attempts to change it, and focus upon the inner world, and attempts to come to peace with it, with the means to each end changing in each alternatively prognostic system. Thus, man tends, normally, to change his psychology as the conditions of his existence change. Each successive state, or level of existence, is a state through which people pass on the way to other states of equilibrium. When a person is centralized in one state of existence, he has a total psychology which is particular to that state.”We don't always have the vantage point to know where we stand in the great turning. But uncertainty, even ominous apprehension of what could be around the next bend, can nevertheless be a starting point. There are days when the light seems to bend back and shine on everything. There are mornings after storms when perspective can return.I want to believe in nature's underlying architecture of good and our capacity for deep remembrance. I want to believe that we are held in a gorgeous persistence. When I touch your crown, soft hair whorls upward into my palm. Spirals name your fingertips. Surely, these, too, are glimpses of an ancient vision. Get full access to The Guest House at shawnparell.substack.com/subscribe
