POPULARITY
We're overdue for a check-in on our hosts, and how they're preparing for a slow re-entry into a world that's essentially unrecognizable from what we knew two months ago. Back at the onset of coronavirus, everything was so uncertain... and not much has really changed. While everyone seems to be an authority, no-one really knows anything, right? Information is in constant conflict - which has led to a lot of divisiveness and vitriol. But despite all of this, Shannon's entering Phase 1 with Urban Waxx in Eugene, and Elisha has remotely built a brand new business from scratch in just two weeks, nbd. Tune in to get the lowdown on their progress, what they've learned about themselves during quarantine, and how geography plays such a significant role in shaping your belief system. We also want your suggestions on future topics of discussion, so don't be shy about sending a DM and heading to Apple for aa lil' podcast feedback (WE LIVE FOR IT). Lastly, we have hugggeee book giveaway on the horizon, and trust us, you'll wanna be here for it!
Let's take a break from checking in on others to bring you up to speed on where we're at (ie: a far cry from our first podcast in quarantine, that's for sure). Shannon's toying with restarting 75 Hard before Shake Shack debuts in Portland, has a far more optimistic view of Urban Waxx's future now that their loan has been approved, is advocating hard for vaginal boric acid suppositories, and is setting mini projects and goals to add structure to her days. Elisha's whipping up coronavirus conspiracy theories (and sourdough starter), redefining the social constructs of what a modern family entails, getting super crunchy by supporting her local farms, emptying her garage, and prepping to become a chicken homesteader. And both of our gals are tentatively getting back to work in what might end up being our new normal. Honestly, however you're getting through this is A-ok. Because right now? There are no rules. Btw, for cheap, fresh meat and eggs, check out Highgate Farms and Lonely Lane Farms, and tell them Elisha sent ya! Real Talk | Real Change Podcast: Instagram @realtalkrealchangepodcast
Amber sits down with the owner of Urban Waxx, Shannon Beekman, to talk all things waxing (of course), waxing horror stories, blended families, mormonism and plastic surgery...They cover A LOT of ground here. Amber LOVES her some Shannon, and you will too!
It's on. Elisha and Shannon apply their very obvious podcast charisma to a subject that resonates for both - clarity and vision in crafting their business. For Shannon, poor customer service experiences honed her focus on shaping how Urban Waxx receives clients. From the first visit to her website - with intentional language promoting "accessible luxury" - to when the client walks out of the salon, the vision is to provide each customer with a positive experience. And then there's change. After ten years of business, Shannon finally raised her prices... with a lot of convincing and unnecessary angst. Some clients walked away, only to return for the quality only her salon provided. Change is hard, but you have to clear space for it, as it's a necessary function of business (and life) to stay relevant. Drawing from her Soul Work, she credits her success to being "obsessed with crafting a finite experience for another human being." And she details her evolution from a white-blonde platinum haired business owner on a shoestring budget, pregnant and living off a Filet O' Fish a day, to a powerhouse entrepreneur who took the advice of a kind designer buddy to get her businesses' vision on track. Real Talk, Real Change continues to live up to its name, providing a cool fly-on-the-wall perspective of two likeminded bossladies chatting about their successes (and failures), while preparing you for what comes next.
When you open yourself up to new experiences, you attract likeminded people. This is what happened when Elisha and special guest, Shannon Beekman, serendipitously crossed paths at a recent Permission Granted event. Both knew immediately that a special friendship had been sparked. In this episode, Shannon - owner and creator of Portland's iconic chain of salons, Urban Waxx - reminisces on the path of an entrepreneur: from "bossy" little girl selling candy in the school halls, to jumping off the cliff after a family death and moving cities, becoming pregnant, and opening her first salon... all within 9 months. These two badass boss-ladies get gritty on the necessary balance between being the fun, likable, Best Friend boss, to becoming a great leader... with boundaries.
Do you ever wonder how successful people "did it"? What was their secret? How can they get so much done? How did they develop such great culture? Did they ever fail?Shannon answers all these questions, and more. Learn everything about how she started her chain of waxing salons, how she failed, and what she learned.
