Congratulations, you're officially in the club — the members-only, high-voltage, absolutely-no-bullshit zone where Leisa Krauss, a.k.a. the Bitchin' Beautician, rips off the sugarcoated bandages and sticks her manicured fingers straight into the gaping wound that is workplace toxicity. And trust me, it's infected. In this episode, Leisa scalpel-slashes her way through the charming carnival of chaos that is the modern med spa: from the Energy Vampire (“I'm just soooo tired”—yes, Becky, we all are), to the Drama Magnet (who thinks every client session is a personal therapy appointment), to the Toxic Talent (who, yes, makes money but also makes everyone else want to light the building on fire).Want the full diagnosis — and the cure? Supporting members get exclusive access to Leisa's battle-tested strategies for cutting out toxicity, leveling up leadership, and protecting your profits. Okay, med spa owners, aestheticians, Botox bandits, and anyone with a laser and a dream—this one's for you. In this no-holds-barred episode of The Scalpel of Truth, your host Leisa Krauss (a.k.a. The Bitchin' Beautician, a.k.a. The Profit Queen, a.k.a. the woman screaming “Data is sexy!” while your P&L sheet cries in the corner) is here to perform a full-blown, surgical-grade takedown of lazy business practices in the aesthetics industry. And let me tell you—it's spicier than a jalapeño facial.Leisa—who, by the way, has coached more clinics than you've had overpriced green juices—unleashes an unapologetic monologue about what it actually takes to stay afloat in 2025's aesthetics landscape. Spoiler: It's not “positive vibes” and “good Botox.” It's ruthless strategy, relentless data tracking, and firing that employee who's been “working on their sales skills” since the Obama administration. In this episode that's equal parts war cry and masterclass, Leisa slices into:Why your patient experience might be trash (and yes, your candles do smell like plastic anxiety)The KPI commandments that separate profit powerhouses from broke Pinterest boardsEmotional hiring and why your cousin Becky needs to either produce or peace outMembership models that don't feel like gym contracts from hellAnd the difference between “upgrades” (good) and “upsells” (ew)This is a chapter from the business Bible your med spa never knew it needed. So buckle up, Bitchachos. You're about to get a verbal microneedling with a side of economic reality and an aftercare kit full of strategy. Because the only thing more painful than this episode? Running a clinic like it's still 2019.Not a member yet? No worries! Just head over to ScalpelOfTruth.com and sign up today! Podcast Episode Notes: Focus on What You Can ControlEpisode Title: Focus on What You Can ControlPodcast: Outside the Treatment RoomHost: Connie HolmEpisode OverviewFeeling overwhelmed by things outside your control? Whether it's client cancellations, social media algorithms, or personal challenges, it's easy to get stuck in frustration. In this episode, we're shifting our focus to what we can control—and letting go of what we can't. Tune in to learn how to redirect your energy and regain control over your business and mindset.Key TakeawaysThe Power of Letting GoWorrying about things outside your control drains your energy and keeps you stuck. The most successful people focus on what they can influence, not external factors. What You Can Control in Your BusinessYour Actions – Instead of stressing over slow business, take proactive steps like running promotions or learning a new skill.Your Mindset – Shift negative thoughts into opportunities (e.g., unexpected free time can be used productively).Your Boundaries – Set limits on your availability and energy; you don't have to be available 24/7.Your Effort – Success isn't about working longer hours but about consistent, focused effort.Practical Strategies for Staying FocusedCreate a ‘Control List' – Divide a page into “Things I Can't Control” vs. “Things I Can Control” and focus only on the latter.Use the ‘Pause and Redirect' Method – When you catch yourself worrying, ask: “What's one action I can take right now?”Set Boundaries with Negativity – Avoid doom-scrolling, gossip, and energy-draining distractions.Create a Vision Board – Visualize your goals with simple notes or images to stay motivated. Why This Topic MattersWith all the uncertainty in the world, it's easy to feel out of control. I've personally struggled with long to-do lists, frustration over others' actions, and the mental weight of uncertainty. But by focusing on what I can control, I've found clarity and peace—and I want to help you do the same.A Thought to Leave You With“You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” – Jon Kabat-ZinnConnect & SubscribeIf this episode resonated with you, please subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a friend who needs to hear it. Podcast Episode NotesWelcome to Outside the Treatment RoomThe podcast about the business side of the beauty industry. I'm your host, Connie Holm.Episode Title: Are You Earning Less Than Minimum Wage? IntroductionWelcome back to Outside the Treatment Room! Today we're tackling a tough topic that might make you a little uncomfortable: Are you unknowingly earning less than minimum wage?In this episode, I'll break down the numbers, explain why this happens, and give you actionable tips to shift from working hard to working smart. So grab a coffee, let's get real, and let's talk money! Many solo estheticians feel like they're earning great money because they're booked solid and bringing in cash. But after expenses, rent, taxes, and time spent on unpaid tasks, the reality can be shocking.Example: If you charge $100 for a facial, but products, rent, and insurance eat into your profits, your real income per hour could be closer to minimum wage (or even less!).Reflection Question: When's the last time you calculated your real hourly rate?If you haven't, don't worry—we're going to do the math together. Here's how to calculate your hourly rate:Gross Income: Total monthly earnings (e.g., $4,000).Expenses: Subtract rent, products, insurance, taxes, and supplies (e.g., $2,000).Net Income: What's left ($4,000 - $2,000 = $2,000).Divide by Hours Worked: If you worked 160 hours, that's $2,000 / 160 = $12.50/hour.This number has to cover everything: sick days, health benefits, and retirement. If your hourly rate surprises you, don't worry—I'm here to help you fix it.Undercharging for Services: If you haven't raised prices in years, rising costs (like inflation) mean you're earning less. Example: Gloves that once cost $6 now cost $22—you must pass these increases on to clients.Too Much Discounting: Promotions are great occasionally, but constant discounts devalue your work.Hidden Expenses: Fancy packaging, unused software, or premium products can drain profits.Unpaid Time: You're also your own receptionist, marketer, and cleaner. Those hours count!Does any of this sound familiar? If so, let's focus on solutions. Here are 5 actionable steps to increase your income:Raise Your Prices: If it's been more than a year, start small with $5-$10 per service. Your expertise has value, and clients expect increases.Streamline Services: Focus on high-profit treatments that take less time and product. Stop offering unprofitable services.Track Expenses: Audit your expenses. Cancel unused subscriptions, buy in bulk, and optimize your budget. (Example: I use Zoom Premium only for my September laser events and cancel it for the rest of the year.)Charge for Your Time: Enforce no-show fees, cancellation policies, and charge appropriately for consultations.Set Income Goals: Break your monthly income target into weekly and daily benchmarks. Know how many services you need to hit your goals. Here's your homework:Sit down this week and calculate your real hourly rate.If you don't like the number, use today's tips as your starting point for change.Key Takeaway: You didn't start your business to struggle. You deserve to thrive and be paid well for the transformation you bring to your clients. You have the power to make that happen.Today's Quote: “You must gain control over your money, or the lack of it will forever control you.” —Dave RamseyWhy This Matters: I recently saw a Facebook post where many beauty professionals admitted to earning less than minimum wage—even though their businesses looked successful. My goal is to give you the tools to take control of your income and move closer to financial freedom. How to Prioritize Your TimeWelcome to Outside the Treatment Room, the podcast that explores the business side of the beauty industry! I'm your host, Connie Holm. Today, we're tackling a topic every business owner faces: prioritizing your tasks. With a long to-do list, it's easy to get overwhelmed, but knowing what's most important can make all the difference.Episode HighlightsUnderstanding the Importance of GoalsEvery task has a purpose. By focusing on clear business goals—whether it's growing your client base, increasing revenue, or planning a sale—you can identify the tasks that truly drive your success. My current priority? Prepping for Black Friday, my spa's biggest sale event of the year!Tools and Techniques for PrioritizationThere are several methods to help prioritize, including:The Eisenhower Matrix: Helps categorize tasks by urgency and importance.Visual Aids: Tools like Notion, sticky notes, or a simple notebook to track and cross off tasks. The “One Thing” Rule: Focus on completing one impactful task at a time to gain momentum.Time Blocking and Task BatchingSetting aside specific time blocks for focused work (like creating content or administrative tasks) and grouping similar tasks together can maximize productivity. For instance, I dedicate time blocks to prepare all social media posts for the week and focus solely on my Black Friday marketing during specific hours.Delegation and OutsourcingDon't be afraid to get help! Delegating tasks that don't require your expertise, such as hiring a virtual assistant or getting help with storage organization, can free up mental space and reduce stress. Outsourcing can be a game-changer for both personal and business tasks.Review and AdaptPriorities shift as new challenges and opportunities arise. At the start or end of each week, take time to review your list, update it based on your current goals, and stay flexible. Adapting ensures you stay on track and keep your stress levels in check.Quote of the Episode"Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important." — Stephen CoveyThank you for tuning into Outside the Treatment Room! Episode Title:Breaking Out of Your Shell: Growing Your Beauty Business as a Shy EntrepreneurHost:Connie HolmPodcast:Outside the Treatment Room "Welcome to today's episode of Outside the Treatment Room, where we talk about the business side of the beauty industry. I'm your host, Connie Holm. If you're a shy entrepreneur and feel like your personality might be holding you back from growing your beauty business, this episode is for you!""Today, we're going to discuss how being shy doesn't have to stop you from building a thriving business. I'll be sharing strategies to help you push through your comfort zone, boost your confidence, and connect with clients in a way that feels genuine to you. I'm more of an extrovert, but I've worked with many introverted business owners, and I want to understand how shyness affects their journey."Segment 1: Embracing Your Shyness as a Strength "Let's start by addressing the idea that being shy is a weakness. It's not. Shy people often have strong listening skills, empathy, and the ability to build deep connections. These qualities can make you a fantastic beauty professional.""Clients value trust, and you don't have to be the most outgoing person to build that. Sincerity, attentiveness, and understanding are enough to earn your clients' trust.""Rather than trying to change your personality, lean into your natural qualities and offer a personalized, caring approach."Segment 2: Overcoming Shyness in Business Situations "Now, while it's important to embrace who you are, there will be situations where stepping out of your comfort zone is necessary for growth. Here are some practical strategies to help you overcome shyness."Practice Makes Progress"Start small by practicing conversations with friends or family. Pick a service and product you're confident talking about, and rehearse your pitch. As you gain experience, your confidence will grow.""Even though I'm more extroverted, I still get nervous at networking events. But stepping out of your comfort zone gets easier with time."Preparation is Key"Preparation can ease your nerves. For consultations or appointments, have a script or key points ready. Knowing what you want to say can help you feel more in control.""Before attending networking events, I prepared a short intro about myself and my business. Though it wasn't easy, it made things much more manageable."Set Goals to Push Boundaries"Set small goals like introducing yourself at a networking event or asking for client reviews. These small victories build confidence."Develop a Signature Service"Having a signature service can help you stand out. Whether it's laser treatments or permanent jewelry, let your work speak for itself. Your expertise will naturally attract clients."Segment 3: Marketing for the Shy Entrepreneur "Marketing can be challenging for shy entrepreneurs, especially when it involves putting yourself out there. But there are ways to market your business that don't require being the face of it."Focus on Visual Marketing"Let your results shine! Post before-and-after photos, share testimonials, or create videos of your treatments. You don't have to be in front of the camera—let your work speak for you."Leverage Online Communities"Join online groups like Facebook communities for beauty professionals. You can engage and offer advice without the pressure of public appearances."Email Marketing & Direct Communication"Email marketing allows you to connect with clients without public interactions. Send updates, offers, and personalized messages directly to their inbox."Quote of the Day "Today's quote is from Amy Schumer: 'So if you're an introvert like me, especially a female introvert, or a person who is expected to give away your energy to everyone else on the reg, I want to encourage you to find time to be alone. Don't be afraid to excuse yourself. Recharge for as long as you need. Lean up against a tree and take a break from the other bears. I'll be there too, but I promise not to bother you.'"Closing Thoughts "To wrap things up, your personality doesn't define your success. Shyness isn't a barrier to running a successful beauty business. With the right strategies, you can build a brand that clients love and trust.""Thank you for tuning into Outside the Treatment Room. While it may sound daunting, Connie breaks down actionable strategies that can help beauty professionals increase their revenue quickly.Key Takeaways:Review Your Current ServicesAnalyze your existing services: Are they priced correctly? Are you offering any potential add-ons that could increase the average ticket size?Consider service bundling: Package complementary services together at a slight discount to encourage clients to spend more.Capitalize on Retail SalesIntroduce impulse buys at checkout: Display products like makeup, creams, or jewelry to increase sales without extra effort.Stock and recommend popular retail items: Offer aftercare products used during treatments, such as sunscreens or lotions, to enhance client experience and boost revenue.Double your income by simply having retail available, and increase it further by engaging clients with product recommendations.Leverage Your Existing Client BaseRun special promotions or create a VIP event: Reward your most loyal clients with exclusive offers and discounts.Encourage referrals: Ask satisfied clients to refer friends and family, and offer incentives for successful referrals.Implement a loyalty program to retain and reward your best clients.Introduce High-Ticket OffersCreate premium service packages: Develop exclusive offerings like a “luxury retreat” that includes multiple services and high-end products.Aggressively promote these offers: Use email, social media, and direct calls to reach clients who may be interested.Maximize Your Marketing EffortsDouble down on social media: Use Instagram and Facebook to showcase your services, share client testimonials, and promote special offers.Utilize email marketing: Send personalized, value-packed emails with limited-time offers to your subscribers.Partner with local businesses: Cross-promote with complementary businesses to reach a new audience.Focus on Client Experience and RetentionDeliver an exceptional client experience: Ensure every interaction is designed to make clients feel valued.Follow up: Send thank you emails or messages after visits to build lasting relationships.Retaining clients is more cost-effective than acquiring new ones, so prioritize creating experiences that keep clients coming back.Inspirational Quotes:Will Rogers: "The safest way to double your money is to fold it over and put it in your pocket."Robin Sharma: "To double your income, triple your investment in learning and personal development.
