From murdering dessert buffets to drinking gallons of garbage coffee at AA meetings, our girls spill the tea on what foods and bevvies they'd (almost) wait in line for. Flavored coffee, or nah? Are all fries created equal? Where DOES Shannon get her burgers from? Why Elisha will thrive on a desert island, Swiss Family Robinson-style, while Shannon will be dead within a week. And what's the best thing about convalescing in recovery after plastic surgery? You'll laugh, cry, maybe vom in your mouth a little, it's all good insight on who treats their body as a temple, and who eats like an unsupervised toddler at Golden Corral. There seems to be a general surface level understanding of what the word "ego" actually entails, and it's long been framed in the negative - reserved for blowhard businessmen, or "egotistical" celebrities. BUT, everyone has an ego, and not all of us are narcissistic presidents, so how does your average Joe ego serve (and fail) you? Referencing the teachings of Eckhart Tolle (renowned expert of ego deconstruction) - and a touch of Buddhist theory - Elisha & Shannon dig in on what they believe the ego is, how it drives and "protects" us, and how to disentangle from its often unhealthy influence. Tackling the pretty big topic of "ego" is one of Elisha's current favorite hobbies (along with getting high on edibles and watching Ted Talks in bed with her New Friend), and Shannon's here to test our her new podcast voice on y'all, so you will not want to miss this honest, intensive delve into the great and powerful ego that directs us all from behind the curtain. Kids are notorious for a bordering-on-pathological questioning of absolutely everything (non-stop, over and over)...and how a parent responds shapes the type of person that kid grows into. For example, if you were raised with a strict emphasis on compliance over curiosity? Well, there's a good chance you're now a chronic people pleaser. And those habits are super difficult to break out of - just ask Elisha, who is questioning with intent in her business, and her relationships. Or Shannon, who has all but surgically removed ego from her role as a business owner, welcoming questioning on all levels. And when you have the benefit of kids asking those questions that you've never really questioned, yourself? Turns out you could be a really cool, totally easy going mom raising confident, inquisitive kids who won't end up apologizing for their place in the world. Join us on this earlybird special of Real Talk, Real Change, where we're unraveling Enneagram types, learning to question everything we were once taught as true and correct, and pissing off members of clergy. Elisha's flying solo hosting RTRC today, but we've got a very special guest to fill in for Shannon. If you've been following along from the start, you'd have heard mention of the name "Joshua Sharp" many times, and it's just kinda fitting that Josh introduces himself on his and Elisha's one year anniversary of living together. Get a privileged peek into what's been a pretty unconventional relationship from the get go, and hear how Josh and Elisha - already separately on the paths of spirituality and self betterment - just happened to find each other at the exact right time. Josh shares how the past year has helped him grow - from relating to children as a guide rather than an authority, living soundly in the now, getting peed on as an adult, and how his and Elisha's very different ideas of vacationing have panned out. And wait until you hear how Josh describes his feels for Elisha (swwwwwoooonnnn). It's not often we get to eavesdrop the inner chaos and communion of a blossoming romance, and especially one this intentional and evolved, so please join us for the very best front row seats. As we're dipping our toes back into what's "normal" these days, you might have noticed some people struggling to adapt. In today's Real Talk, Real Change, Elisha and Shannon spotlight our universal responses to collective trauma, and in particular, our own personal resilience. For those of us fortunate enough to survive the pandemic with our families and friend circles intact, there's still a lot of acquired anxieties to contend with. Are you feeling overextended in how you socialize? Having difficulty dealing with post-pandemic vaccination etiquette? Feeling vulnerable to "triggering" words and scenarios? We've got some real talk on sensitivity and personal responsibility, and some advice on how to refine who actually deserves your social energy. Join us for some solid tools on how to step forward from these Unprecedented Times into a you that works in your best favor. P.S. We need your help coming up with a new term for "fan club" ("hype harem?"), so would love to hear some suggestions. Thanks so much for joining us on this awesome adventure, btw, and we're having such a blast making RTRC Reels on our Instagram. Do you want more content from us? We will be back with a fresh episode next week but for now enjoy this very popular episode from awhile back. Have a great week and thanks for listening. Breaking up is hard to do, but why aren't we talking more about the devastating heartache of breaking up with your best girlfriend? It's weird, right? Because basically every woman you know has been through this, and yep, it hurts waaay worse than breaking up with a lover. There's a very special type of friendship that occurs when two girls/women make that instant connection, a deep, obsessive enmeshment where you become joined at the literal hip. And if (or when) that friendship falters, it can be just as intense in its conclusion. Elisha and Shannon share their ex-bestie histories: the warning signs to look out for, how forming close relationships with employees can be a lousy idea, and that ghosting is a pretty shitty way to end things with a friend. And sometimes, those deep, trusted friendships grow toxic, as you love that person so hard that they learn they can get away with treating you like garbage. We're curious to hear your stories of "best friends forever" gone south, and especially from the fellas listening in - does this also happen to you? Do you settle your differences with a quarrel before heading out for mimosas? Follow Us on Instagram! We're here with insta bestie Kyle Alexander of Pretty Sweet Sugaring, but we're not just chatting about a fabulous eco-friendly, all natural, all organic, culturally ancient alternative to body waxing, today. Nope, this episode is for entrepreneurs new and old, those who seek fulfilment in their jobs (or, don't), mentor-hungry social media zombies, for those of us who feel our job might define us, and anyone, really, who needs help finding a new life focus. Quarantine has given us pause to truly assess what makes us happy, and what's happening is a Renaissance Faire of folk - mostly women, mind you - striking out and creating their new realities. This episode will empower you, help you find your Shovel Buddies, hype community over competition, and hone your social and business networks to discover what truly serves you. It's also about getting those silky smooth baby seal feels from a fresh body sugaring, y'all. ;) Do you want more content from us? Shannon's often joked here about her ADHD, but today we're actually gonna delve into something that is surprisingly common in kids...and frustratingly undiagnosed in adults. If you're a neurotypical type, crossing paths with someone with ADHD can be a little perplexing. What can feel like dismissiveness, or a lack of care, is actually pretty easily explained if you're prepared to understand what makes them tick. And once you start to get it, you can begin to fully appreciate your funny, empathetic, generous co-worker or loved one for who they truly are - and yes, despite what you might feel sometimes, they love you, too. This episode has been a long time coming, and we're fortunate to bear witness to the inner workings of someone who has lived their entire life with ADHD. Join us as we discover why so many folk with ADHD can be found in AA meetings, whether Shannon is truly a genius or not (jury's out), if your friend could possibly have ADHD - or just be a garden variety asshole -, and the many, many cool things about being neurodiverse. Wherever you are on the spectrum, if at all, we know you'll walk away from this episode with a greater understanding and appreciation of both Shannon, and all of the wonderful and diverse ADHD people who share your world. Is your mom, like, the BEST MOM, EVER? Do you and your mom chat on the phone for hours, every single day? Do you have matching handbags, and make an annual pilgrimage to Kauai together? If this is you, this may not be the episode for you - and we say that with all the love and support (and slight envy) towards folks who have strong, healthy relationships with their parents. Because many of us don't, and with the yearly triggerthon of Mother's Day on the near horizon, we're getting all tripped up in our feelings. Having a set day to celebrate your mother - or being a mother - kinda seems a little manipulative. Like there's some obligation to behave or feel a certain way, and unspoken expectations inevitably lead to crushing disappointments. If you're a motherless person - by choice, by necessity, by loss, whatever - you may find a little solace in today's episode. We choose to celebrate (or not celebrate) however we want, in whatever way that makes sense to us. Zero obligation, nada guilt. And that's pretty freeing. We're always here to chat mom-daughter relationships, and if you're actually looking for a unique gift for a mom, or mother figure, or yourself, sign up for our ~super exclusive~ RTRC Fan Club! Cheeky bonus episodes and bawdy tales of Shannon regularly humiliating herself are far better value at $5 per month than bottomless mimosas made from stale well champagne and eggs Benedict that have been sitting under a heat lamp for 6 hours. No more wire hangers, just real talk about moms and motherhood. "Mother relationships show up in different ways, and we all feel all kinds of ways about it. This episode is not for people who are all "my mother's the best!"" - Elisha Alcantara "Having a mother that has passed is so much more socially acceptable than having a mother who is alive that you don't have a relationship with." - Shannon Beekman Do you want more content from us? If you had to choose one zeitgeist of 2020-21, it would be the discussion about race. America, especially, is experiencing deep growing pains right now, as seemingly two divides wrestle with both the historical and current context of racism in our society - and a centuries-old simmer has finally hit boiling point. Join our buttery-voiced podcast babes as they start to peel back the many-layered onion that is systematic racism, "cancel culture", our misconceptions of "other", and just how impactful language and pervasive stereotyping can be in furthering or cementing our prejudices. It's a gigantic, sensitive topic, and one that we'll likely revisit in the future, especially as we're constantly evolving and evaluating our understanding of the intricacies of racism. Elisha and Shannon want to provide a space where it's easy to talk about race without fear of being dragged, where everyone gets a chance to learn and adjust their preconceived notions. None of us are perfect, and we're all here to improve ourselves so we can be better friends, lovers, and community members. Want to be a true ally, and fight the real fight against racism? Step up and come with us.
If you're a Real Talk, Real Change fan club member, you'll know that Shannon and Elisha drop weekly voice memos to put a lil' pep in your day - and Shannon's latest was about self-advocacy. Why do we find it so freaking difficult to put our best needs on the table, at work, in a relationship, with our family? It's surprisingly common for people pleasers to take on way too much by saying "Yes" to absolutely everything. And it's because we often feel our worth is based on what we can give to others, but this always leads down a path to resentment, passive aggressiveness, and discontent. It's a struggle to self advocate, we get it, but with practice - and some guidance from your hosts who have BEEN THERE - you can make your every relationship so much better. Listen in on Elisha and Shannon's evolution from "Yes" gals to self advocating pros, and never give up your place to a gym bro ever again.
Elisha and Shannon are on a personal mission to demolish one of those lingering social taboos - $money$ - and why we are so reluctant to talk about it. Specifically women. And even more specifically, AMERICANS. What is it about the transparency of personal finances that feels so... shameful? Special guest Sarah Blanchfield is here to demystify our relationships with money, blending her skills as a financial and behavioral therapist with sound financial strategy. Many of us inherit a boatload of generational trauma, and money management is surprisingly right up there as a major contributing life stressor. Join Sarah and your hosts as we ditch the generic budgeting spreadsheets and implement a true plan for sustainable financial success, no matter your income level. And this is pretty huge, y'all - one lucky RTRC listener will win access to Bulletproof Bootcamp, Sarah's online self-study budgeting course! We here at RTRC love a "girl leaves unfulfilling corporate job to follow her passions and becomes a raging success" story, and Lea Dixon - or The Platter Girl, if you're in the know - is a shining example. When Lea returned to her job from maternity leave to find her co-workers wrangling the same tedious issues from before she'd left, she had a lightning bolt moment of how to extract herself from the misery of 9-5. Cheese. Charcuterie is back in style, but Lea's been doing it longer (and better) than most, bringing a fun whimsy to grazing plates paired with gorgeous photography, an authentic social media presence, education, networking, and partnering with Oregon's incredible local vendors. SMART. Grab yourself some crackers and stuffed olives on a toothpick, and listen in on how Lea got to where she is, what's her very fave cheese, Elisha's best business tip for self-marketers, and the increasing growls of Shannon's tummy. Shannon's flying solo with some Cheez-its this week, but that's okay as she and our special guest have loads to discuss. Welcome to Part 2 of our episode with Sarah Centrella - life coach, podcaster, author, and single mom - and if you haven't listened to Part 1 yet, go do that now (we'll wait). So, it's no shocking revelation that women in their 30s and 40s tend to focus on the here and now, and once their kids fly the coop they're left suddenly wondering who they really are. Sarah's here to tell you that you can either float along with life, or create your own path. And guess what? Most of us already know how to manifest a dream, we just don't even realise it. The real question is, dear listener: what's next? Join us for an episode that shows you how to make REAL CHANGE, in simple, doable steps that you can get started with right away - and learn how to get loads of freebies from Sarah's teachings that will propel you towards living your true, authentic future. Most of us have experienced that "perfect shitstorm" reckoning, where life reveals what rock bottom truly is... and that's why Sarah Centralla's story is so relatable. Come along for the ride as this inspirational author, motivational speaker, and single mom of three kids lays bare her ascension from a life in tatters, to a life filled with passions and joys. Learn the huggeee difference between slapping the word "success" on a vision board, to truly manifesting the life you want to have with a future board. And for those of you rocked by raising kids through those difficult stages? Let Sarah guide you on how to make conscious decisions to bring love and positivity into your home. Kids pick up their cues on how to communicate and interact with the world from YOU, so if you want to parent differently to how you were raised - and real talk, this is so many of us - we're gonna show you how. Sarah also asks our viewers, "How can you expand your world?" And spoiler alert: it's not as hard as you might think. Join us for Part 1 of our interview with Sarah (and stay tuned for whether Snacks the hamster makes it to Part 2). Instragram: @sarahcentrella Website: www.sarahcentrella.com
We've got a snappy little episode for you today! Britney Spears has been in the news lately, and if you saw the recent documentary, you likely would have recoiled in disgust at how Ed MacMahon "interviewed" 10 year old Spears. Nuh uh. Elisha and Shannon get HEATED over the dual infantilization and sexualization of young women in the spotlight, and the double standards of celebrity. How girls learn from a very young age to "ask permission" with their language, and how - through actions and words - we're taught that our bodies, thoughts, and power belong to anyone but ourselves. How we skirt around direct communication lest someone think we're a bitch, a nag, or just too extra. Your RTRC hosts want you to pay attention to how you communicate, and advise on how to ditch the ingrained language that trips us up in life. After all, "It's Britney, sorry!" doesn't quite have the same ring.
Many of us feel a warped secrecy and disconnect when it comes to our bank accounts. How much we make. How much we spend. How we spend it. All the unnecessary denial and shame that comes with money, whether loaded, or living paycheck to paycheck. Maybe this stems from our childhoods, picking up negative financial habits from our parents? All we know is that most of us spend well beyond our means, and none of us are actually TALKING about it. Well, we're talking about it, now, and you'd better not fall asleep *pokes Shannon*. Elisha recalls being forced to lie to her mother's creditors on the phone when she was a child, saying her mother was away on "African Safari". Shannon discusses her hands-off approach to running her business for the first 8 years, and how well that worked out for her. Plus our hosts share their top 2-3 tips on money, learned from some pretty hard lessons, and both are here to remind you that you're not alone. Money mismanagement can be pretty freaking overwhelming, and the only way you're ever going to be able to afford to book that world trip is to 'fess up to your bad habits, and work to change them. In this repeat episode, we return to the gentle discourse involving money talk as we have a tough financial talk in an upcoming bonus episode, exclusive to our new Fan Club. Using these skills, we can be reminded of the importance of breaking the money chat taboo. Let's do this!
Spin instructor. Hair stylist. Survivor. We've had Lianne Saffer on Real Talk | Real Change before, but in the time since, she's been racking up the 5 star reviews with her compelling memoir, Please Don't Send Me Flowers. We chat about partner abuse that doesn't leave a bruise, keeping kids appraised of everything life throws at us in an authentic way (especially with the shitty stuff), what it's like to truly meet the love of your life, and what NOT to say to your buddy who's been diagnosed with cancer. For someone who has had more than her fair share of hard knocks, not even her Jeep catching fire during our recent ice storm can get this gal down. If you haven't yet met Lianne, you're about to. Today's special guest on RTRC is on the cusp of launching her niche company that will literally revolutionize the rideshare industry, and we're here to be their ride-or-die hype team. Trenelle Doyle pulled on past skills to found Go Girl Ride (or GG, for those in the know), a Black-femme-owned, Portland-based, all-inclusive LGBTQ+/non-binary rideshare. Trenelle's natural knack for people and advocating for their safety was piqued as an Uber driver... and an unsettling number of her customers shared stories of creepy, unsafe drivers. When American Express 100 for 100 "Founders of Change" program took notice, their GoFundMe took off, and her rock solid team was assembled to bring GG from incubation period to reality. With a unshakable commitment to community - donating 10% of ride revenue to causes local to each city - and initial focus on cities with high rates of human trafficking, Go Girl Ride is poised to make real change in our communities for sex workers and other demographics vulnerable to predatory drivers. This episode will INSPIRE you, and Trenelle's "pure heart" mission is simply infectious. You'll want to tune in for her unique entrepreneurial wisdom (and a chance to win a rad GG Safety Kit!). Coming to you straight from under two feet of Portland ice and snow, your fave hosts are talking "resilience": have you got it, where does it come from, and how do you get you some. It's difficult to not flail and catostrophize when you're surviving through a no-end-in-sight pandemic, wildfires, political unrest, and a 40 year ice storm, but a resilient attitude towards all the shit life throws at you isn't something you're born with - and nor does it mean you have to reshape yourself into an emotionless robot to survive the day to day. Elisha and Shannon dig into where resilience might stem from (ie: maybe childhood trauma, or PTSD), using perspective as a compass to guide you through every crisis, and how you can still be a sensitive human being without wallowing in your sad feels. By training yourself in how you meet future challenges, you can not only overcome them, but you're also modeling healthy behaviors for your children... saving them from a lifetime of grappling with unnecessary angst. Do you consider yourself a resilient person? Or do you go weak-kneed at the whiff of a crisis? Shannon and Elisha have a PLAN that actually works, getting you on the path to building resilience that will help you cope with whatever 2021 can fling your way.
It's not easy being green, and that's especially true if you're a houseplant and find yourself in Shannon's care. Being surrounded by flora is so good for your mental health, purifies and beautifies your environment...and can even prolong your lifespan. Today's special guests are Skylor Powell and Chelsii Gregory, also known as The Plant Doctors. These two old friends stumbled upon their secret green thumbs when they both acquired their first "adult" houseplant in the same week. From there, their business has evolved and blossomed, even during Covid. Love plants, but don't know how to care for them (or, don't want to)? Want to go from plant killer to plant queen, like Elisha? The Plant Doctors educate, curate, plant-sit, and cultivate community through the gift and love of plants. Join us for this upbeat episode that'll have you switching out your bathroom lights and coveting a fancy mister. And bonus, there's some LUSH plant-related giveaways for 5 lucky RTRC viewers, so tune in for plant fun, plant puns, and Shannon's awful dad jokes. Contact The Plant Doctors! They are currently offering a free 10 minute virtual consultation to the first 5 people that reach out after hearing this episode. Instagram: @theplantdoctors Website: https://theplantdocs.com/

Join the gang as Courtney shares the trials of her business during a pandemic, dealing with anxiety, depression, and relationship hiccups, and the real exciting stuff she's got lined up on the horizon. We're now 1+ year into our international sociological experiment of spending every waking minute with our loved ones, and things are going JUST FINE. But real talk: if you're having days where you want to leave your kids in the middle of a forest with nothing but a pocketful of breadcrumbs - or baloney, if you're Shannon - you're totally not alone. Your beloved hosts talk parenting during a pandemic, and share what it's like raising "difficult" kids, being judged as a bad parent, how kids are not an extension of yourself to be molded to your ideals, and how to pick your battles as you get to know your children reaaaalll well during quarantine. Shit's hard atm, friends, and if your child is acting out in unusual ways, there's likely more to it than just a simple temper tantrum. When Elisha's 7-year-old starts to display some negative behaviors, she pivots on her approach with him, and significantly alters the home dynamic by listening to his needs and restructuring his day. Shannon is determined to always be real with her kids, apologizing to them when needed, and ensuring they get the unconditional love and respect that she never had, growing up. Every child is different, and we cannot even imagine what they're going through right now. If you're struggling with your kids or feeling like a "bad parent," reach out to us - we'd love to hear from you, and we're here to help, as always.
Today we're tapping into a fave topic: acceptance, and adaptability, the core foundations for creating a calmer, happier life. Seriously. Let's talk about how there's always gonna be another fire to put out, how acceptance does not equal weakness, and how to stop sweating the small stuff. The more adaptable and resilient you are, the better off you're gonna be. And that comes from acceptance - knowing that you cannot change anything other than your perception, and adaptability - how you react to and rebound from that situation. Our hosts will make you laugh (and cringe) as they walk you through real life examples of putting these concepts into play - including Elisha's flooded basement, which is nowhere near as fun as it sounds. Reminder: We have a fan club! We have a Patronus! We have intensely awesome giveaways that you will not want to miss! And we're deeply grateful for the ability to continue on with these podcasts, as a form of connecting, self-therapy, and so that Shannon can get all the attention she needs to survive the ongoing quarantine. Love y'all, and let us know your thoughts on today's topic!
A global pandemic is the perfect time to shine a light on waning relationships, right? Being cooped up with a partner who can be annoying is one thing, but major shout out to those of you who are stuck within a few hundred square feet of a partner you've already emotionally checked out from. In today's episode, divorce experts Elisha and Shannon unravel their own personal experiences with calling it quits - the build up, the execution, and the aftermath. Many of us mimic our parents' often disastrous marriage patterns, and as kids, we tend to blame ourselves and yet absorb those bad habits... then there's the finances involved, and the feelings of shame. We cover it all - from Elisha's super-unorthodox-yet-surprisingly-successful method, to Shannon's just blowing the entire ship up. If you find yourself in the throes of relationship PTSD and don't know how to proceed, or you're feelin' kinda divorce-curious, your hosts are here to tell you that there's life and laughter on the other side of annulment, y'all!
It feels like a decade has passed since our last episode, where Shannon and Elisha grappled with the The Year That Shall Not Be Named. So, so much has happened since then, and surprisingly, most of it has been... pretty great, actually. Thanks for joining us again as your fave podcast gals sum up their highs and lows of 2020 - a year of finding out what's truly important, like Costco pajamas, and whose partner would get further in a season of Alone. How prolonged exposure to social media can become a toxic influence, and how we're now headed into a historic alignment of the stars not seen since the dawn of the Renaissance period. We've got so much good stuff lined up at Real Talk, Real Change, and you'll wanna be a part of it. A new website, the launch of our fan club, and some seriously exciting giveaways that will blow your damn minds. C'mon and embrace the energy of new beginnings as we embark on this journey, together.
We've talked money before, and how it can feel a bit icky to be forthcoming about financials. But real talk is all about sitting in that discomfort, so you can make real change! Welcome aboard Cait Pearson, food photographer, profit coach, podcast host, and "the ultimate hype woman". Cait's world-dominating podcast, She's Hungry, shakes down the anxiety and embarrassment that many of us struggle with when it comes to managing our finances. We're overdue for a check-in on our hosts, and how they're preparing for a slow re-entry into a world that's essentially unrecognizable from what we knew two months ago. Back at the onset of coronavirus, everything was so uncertain... and not much has really changed. While everyone seems to be an authority, no-one really knows anything, right? Information is in constant conflict - which has led to a lot of divisiveness and vitriol. But despite all of this, Shannon's entering Phase 1 with Urban Waxx in Eugene, and Elisha has remotely built a brand new business from scratch in just two weeks, nbd. Tune in to get the lowdown on their progress, what they've learned about themselves during quarantine, and how geography plays such a significant role in shaping your belief system. We also want your suggestions on future topics of discussion, so don't be shy about sending a DM and heading to Apple for aa lil' podcast feedback (WE LIVE FOR IT). Lastly, we have hugggeee book giveaway on the horizon, and trust us, you'll wanna be here for it!
Ready for some honest, vulnerable real talk on sex and relationships? Thought as much. We've hooked up with Heidi Busche, author of Relationship Ready: How I Stopped Fucking Randos and Started Cupcaking My Soulmate. Heidi shares her struggles with sobriety, the drawbacks of being a "guy's girl", and details the wreckage of countless intimate encounters gone awry due to her deep feelings of unworthiness - until she found the tools to switch up her game. Join Elisha, Shannon, and Heidi (if that IS their real names) on this nostalgic dip into the ground zero of past relationships: how different personality types process conflict, how to honestly and clearly navigate couple arguments without escalation, and how to be authentic in ALL of your relationships. We reckon that this is one of those episodes all women can relate to and benefit from, no matter your background or history. Buckle up, losers in love - Heidi's here to help! We're not done checking in on fellow entrepreneurs to see how they're riding the 'ronacoaster - mostly to find out how their business practices have adapted to our new normal. And we've found that all of them, without exception, are "amp(ing) up their game for when the lights go back on." In this episode, Shannon and Elisha are tickled to chat with Kris Ward, authority in productivity and building your business by building your team, podcast host, author of Win the Hour, Win the Day, "recovering rushaholic", and super polite (though not to be messed with) Canadian. After a 2 year sabbatical to provide end of life care for her terminally ill husband, Kris returned to her business to find it had not only survived without her, but thrived, due to a structured team plan she'd prophetically set into motion years earlier. Now, she teaches those struggling with their own growing business how to leverage their bandwidth, the crucial importance of strategy and training, and how entrepreneurs can double their income while taking triple their time off. Seem impossible? It's actually 100% doable, and this episode is the inspirational kick in the butt we all needed to work smart rather than hard. Free Gifts From Kris! Scene: You're feeling sad, or in a crappy mood. Even though you're not really feeling it, you talk to a partner or friend about it. Suddenly, you feel a million times better. That's Real Talk | Real Change. Our quarantined hosts shoot the shit over "the COVID psychosis," otherwise known as "Elisha cackles her way through describing her dubious life choices." Sit down with your podcast besties as they revisit boric acid suppositories and the world's best vibrator, how spending all of this time cooped up with partners and kids can prompt a free fall into paranoia over mystery knickers, the trauma echoes of being cheated on, and how parenting can sometimes feel a little bit... bipolar. Yep, the girls have snapped, and it's freaking hilarious. We wanna hear your bananas COVID psychosis moments, too, so 'fess up, because it always feels better to talk about it (and lord knows we could all use a laugh). P.S. We live for your feedback and 5 star reviews, so take a break from staring at the wall or murdering your sourdough starter and head to Apple to give us some love!
Settle in for our longest episode yet - and that's because our guest, Galen Emanuele, is such an enigmatic, passionate speaker (and Elisha and Shannon just didn't want to quit). Galen comes from a creative background of improvisational theatre, and paired with his sharp analytical mind, magic happens. He helps companies "create living, breathing intentional cultures", by ditching punitive leadership, and crafting workspaces run on positivity, accountability, and emotional intelligence. If you're struggling with low workplace morale, as a leader or as an employee, this episode is gonna shake the hell out of your perspective. Learn how companies can use this "downtime" to strip away the bullshit and create a plan for workplace success...and we're not just talking about an office pizza party on Fridays. Think back to the RTRC episode where Elisha & Shannon held a giveaway of the books that were most influential to them at the time. Fast forward to today, where we finally get to meet the winner of those books, Carla, a self described bookworm, RTRC superfan, and voracious self help connoisseur. Inheriting her love of reading from her mother, who used books as a form of escapism and "travel" from farm life, Carla explains how both books and her stint in the Army have honed her skills in leadership and adaptability to life's challenges. She and our hosts discuss how, during quarantine, our perspectives shift from day to day, and that it's a choice to stay stuck when you can always reinvent yourself. You'll love Carla's life story and attitude, plus she drops her current Top 5 favorite books that are influencing her at this time (heads up: those titles are gonna be our next giveaway!).
Title: Surrender in Place The Permission Granted speaking event sparked many serendipitous connections between powerful women, and it's what led to Shannon joining Elisha as co-host on Real Talk Real Change. And today's guest, Jocelyn Kuhn, played a huge part in Permission Granted's success. Author, mother, professional coach, and (sometime) speaker, Joceyln focuses on figuring out our personal truths...and hers was that she thrives behind the scenes. Hear how she stripped away the layers of other folks' philosophies to hit the core of what she really wanted from life: To be a helper. To provide service. To NOT be in the spotlight. Join us as we check in on another badass entrepreneur to see how they're hanging tough during week 873 of shelter in place, learn how to pick a fight with your quarantine partner to alleviate the doldrums, and to remember to create "pockets of peace" in your own home to retain your sanity. Plus there'll be a pretty rad giveaway of Jocelyn's book, Thriving Through Transitions, which couldn't be more of a hot topic if it caught fire. Google "Oregon native manifesting success in L.A." and a pic of our special guest is bound to pop up. Elisha and Shannon are chatting with author, artist, and trained alignment specialist, Bethany Londyn, who found her people in Los Angeles, and has been mastering and teaching transformational theta healing ever since. Yeah, we're getting a little woo woo this episode, and that's because we've suddenly gotten all this spare time to get to know ourselves (no matter which realm it's in). We're talking how to remove gel nails at home without adult supervision, what's the #1 pandemic bestseller right now (boxed hair dye -vs- vibrators), journaling beyond boy crushes, and the undeniable powers of Oprah and Beyonce. Let's take a break from checking in on others to bring you up to speed on where we're at (ie: a far cry from our first podcast in quarantine, that's for sure). Shannon's toying with restarting 75 Hard before Shake Shack debuts in Portland, has a far more optimistic view of Urban Waxx's future now that their loan has been approved, is advocating hard for vaginal boric acid suppositories, and is setting mini projects and goals to add structure to her days. Elisha's whipping up coronavirus conspiracy theories (and sourdough starter), redefining the social constructs of what a modern family entails, getting super crunchy by supporting her local farms, emptying her garage, and prepping to become a chicken homesteader. And both of our gals are tentatively getting back to work in what might end up being our new normal. Honestly, however you're getting through this is A-ok. Because right now? There are no rules. Btw, for cheap, fresh meat and eggs, check out Highgate Farms and Lonely Lane Farms, and tell them Elisha sent ya! Real Talk | Real Change Podcast: Instagram @realtalkrealchangepodcast
Fellow crier and pasteurized processed cheese appreciator, Courtney Sjoberg, joins Elisha and Shannon as they continue to reach out to boss babes and see how they're weathering the corona climate. If y'all think back to our original episode with Courtney, you'll remember that she's the Hashtag Queen who went from living off quesadillas to creating a multiple six figure online business in just six months - and she's dedicated her life to showing others how. Listen in and learn that behind every success, there's an infinite supply of passion, and Courtney's got it in spades. Our girls talk horse-before-cart business escapades that were dead in the water before they even started, how people will always tell you that your ideas are dumb (don't listen, they're not), why Elisha was Googling for "attached" penises online this week, and how going through a once-in-a-lifetime, international pandemic can provide some pretty serious perspective on the past. Plus, if we're lucky, Elisha will share that pork recipe she was raving about. We're continuing our series of checking in on businesswomen who have had their hectic lifestyles put on pause by the coronavirus quarantine. Kris Rice now gets to focus on her life changing healthy living project, Deconstructing Wellness, with her two kids front and center. We all know that moms are usually on the bottom rung as far as priorities go, and Kris is determined to empower women by giving them permission to focus on themselves. Elisha, Shannon, and Kris talk about the impact of daily routines - whether they serve you in these odd times, or whether it's been freeing to discard them - having open, candid conversations with kids, embracing our failures, and how to be mindful of thankfulness and privilege rather than let our boredom manifest in negative ways. It's inevitable that we're all gonna change during this, and it's up to us whether it's for the better, or the worse. How are you adapting to the world gone topsy turvy? We want you to check in with us, too! We've committed to connecting with local entrepreneurs during the era of coronavirus, and our special series continues, kicking off with Megan Hamilton: longtime buddy of Shannon, and owner of Glam Beauty Bar, a one-stop make-up and beauty hub. Next we check in with Steph and Lianne, the former being an acupuncturist and creator of Optimize You, and the latter a hairstylist. Both of these badasses instruct at BurnCycle, and they're also partners in life (with great hair). How are these three very different women coping with COVID? Elisha and Shannon talk corona-babies, dealing with depression during dark times, and what we want our kids to remember when they look back on this period in 20 years' time. Also, find out if Shannon's husband, Joe, really did end up eating cheeseburgers with the rad sex workers of Boober Eats, and if Elisha's 7 year old son will ever grow up to be Bradley Cooper. Plus, find out how you can get a whopping 80% off a health and mental wellness course offered by Optimize You (that's a whole 20% total, math nerds!). Totally perfect for folk who never seem to have the time to prioritize themselves (hot tip: now you do). Don't chuck out all your healthy habits just because we're experiencing a crisis, y'all.
Elisha's wearing a shamrock sweatshirt, and Shannon's sporting her clothes from yesterday, and together they're Zooming with two dynamic, entrepreneurial wunderkinds to see how their businesses are faring amid all this bullshit. First up, an update from Lovely, founder and owner of Skin By Lovely, to see how she's reimagining her popular cosmetic dermatology practice to adapt to our present reality. Second, Abigail Parker: # 1 Real Talk | Real Change fan, and former East Coast ballet dancer who struggled to fit her body type into the genre, until a revelation (and Britney Spears' Toxic) shook her onto the path of personal fitness training and the Embrace Me movement. Y'all, these guests will hella inspire you, and leave you in tears - both :) and :(. Let's talk about dealing with the echoes of addiction during a crisis, how principled, ethical small businesses are the most likely to come out the other end, and how, ultimately, we're all gonna emerge from the era of COVID-19 completely altered. Psst: Stay tuned for some rad Skin By Lovely discounted skincare! Because let's face it, we'll need it.
If the theme of our last episode was the limbo realm of uncertainty, then the theme for this one is introspective resolve. While everything's still very much up in the air as to how humanity will land when this is over, we're all gaining a little perspective on our past lives, and embracing the silver linings. Shannon calls these milestones "psychic shifts," a sudden or dramatic shock to our everyday that sets us off on a different course. Once that feeling starts to wear off, we can take action and better our situation. Elisha and Shannon take a moment to applaud the strength and love of Portland's small business community, how we're reassessing our mindless shopping habits accordingly, and reassure us that, whatever happens, we will rebuild. A brick and mortar business may buckle, but the spirit that built that business doesn't die. Our hosts also want to know how you're doing out there - do you have a story to share, or need a friendly ear? We want to hear your thoughts, and we have nothing but time.
We're knee-deep in one of those pivotal, defining moments in history. Everything's uncertain and surreal, we're trying to suppress the panic, social media is the very worst right now (and yet we cannot look away)... and is there even an end in sight? Since you asked for it, here it is - Elisha and Shannon deliver their most emotionally rending episode yet, providing raw insight on just how fucking devastating it is to be a small business owner right now. And that's before even touching upon the very real impact of what this deadly virus has in store, for all of humanity. So, pull up a seat on our virtual couch. Shit's mighty real right now, and we're not going to sugarcoat it (but we promise you'll get at least a few laughs in by the end). Reach out if you need to. Share your stories of quarantine, your latest baking triumph, or how you're keeping your mental health healthy. At least we're all in this, together.
Dust off those reading glasses, it's round 2 of our hosts dishing on the books that have influenced their lives. And as different as their faves are, you'll still notice some common themes: Manifestation. Affirmations. Un-fucking yourself from stubborn habits. From the cult classic novel, The Alchemist, to simple truths from a poet and rapper, to the basic laws that built (and destroyed) powerful figures throughout history, we're pretty sure that these books contain your new life mantras. Bonus: you can easily pick them up, read a few pages in a quiet moment, and walk away feeling inspired. Elisha and Shannon are delighted to announce a giveaway of all four featured books, so you can get wise and feel all empowered, too (and keep an ear out for future giveaways as we approach the highly anticipated roll-out of the RTRC Fan Club!). Lastly, have you read a book recently that was like a literary punch to the gut? Let the goils know so they can nerd out over it on a future podcast episode.
Last episode, we discussed the dissociation many of us feel when it comes to knowing our own vaginas. Oddly enough, many of us also feel a similar warped secrecy and disconnect when it comes to our other personal "purse"...our bank accounts. Let us show you how!
We're tickled pink to have Dr. Rick Rosenfield as our special guest on RTRC, and as usual, we're highlighting a revolutionary who has broken free of the mold of their industry and carved out their own place in the world. After almost quitting medicine due to the Borg-like restrictions and conformities of practicing at a big HMO, Dr. Rick established Pearl Women's Center in downtown PDX, and has been helping vaginas put their best clit forward since 2005. Join your beloved hosts and Dr. Rick - who, tbh, is squandering a prime opportunity to go by "Dr. Feelgood" - as they discuss "intimate wellness," an umbrella term for medical focus on vaginal rejuvenation, stress incontinence, sexual function (including lubrication and heightened orgasms), laser, and physical therapy. Women are taught from birth that our vaginas are dirty lil' secrets - we don't look at them, we don't talk about them. RTRC is here to bust up the stigma and body shaming with an intimate conversation about our intimates. Find out if Elisha will ever master the cowgirl (then flip it and reverse it), or if Shannon's vagina is truly in the top 1% of the most beautiful Dr. Rick has ever seen. Plus, Dr. Rick is offering some sweet deals for our listeners. It's never too late for sex education, y'all, and class is in session! This week's episode is ultimately all about timelines. After a false start, will Shannon complete 75 Hard before Elisha changes her Facebook status to "Single"? What's it really like to revisit online dating as a whole new person: 40 years old, sober, making your own money, kids? Can you legitimately meet your Crocs-wearing soulmate at a houseplant meet-up? Answer: Nope. Our charming hosts discuss seeing movies alone, the only man in Portland who wears a suit to a Starbucks date, soup dumplings at Din Tai Fung, the panty-dropping effect of good grammar, and online dating mishaps and magic. And they also spill a teaser for their upcoming Fan Club perk of boner... uh, bonus episodes. Those promise to get deep, graphic, and embarrassing, so you'll wanna be in on those, trust us. Love listening to RT|RC? Give us a Super Like, wink wink! Follow us on Instagram! @realtalkrealchangepodcast
Elisha and Shannon have always been open about their past struggles with alcoholism, and what it took to get back on the path to sobriety. But what happens when you're in a relationship defined by alcoholism, and you break away... but your partner doesn't? In this deeply personal episode, Elisha reveals the history behind her recent break up with a partner of 15 years, and how she's no longer living with excuses of guilt, shame, or commitment. Both of your RTRC hosts strongly believe that being visible in discussing alcoholism can literally save lives, and Elisha has now freed herself from the ongoing dread of expecting a visit from the police with tragic news at 2am. The hard work that she's invested in herself over the past few years has given her the strength to step out on her own - to put herself and her children first - while keeping compassionate distance from her ex's self destructive behaviors. This is an intimate, critical conversation that needs to be heard. If you or someone you love is struggling with alcoholism or addiction, please reach out via DM - while Shannon and Elisha are not professionals, they do have the experience and resources to help set you on a healthy path. And P.S. Elisha is now ready for dating recs, just sayin'. Follow us on Instagram! @realtalkrealchangepodcast @elishaalcantara @shannonkbeekman
Of all the RTRC episodes that have folk sharing how it impacted them, the one about girlfriends breaking up is near the top of the list. Soooo, about that. Over the past few weeks, our hosts were surprised to find themselves at communicative odds - the tone was off, replies were short, and conflict dread had started to set in. Elisha and Shannon reveal how they spotted, and quickly resolved, a fissure in their relationship in this super unique episode - and we mean UNIQUE, because how often do two friends get this frank and exposed in front of an audience? The gals chat about how taking the time to pause before responding can avoid big blow ups. How to be responsive rather than reactive. The fear of being truly vulnerable, and the importance of calling out friends on their bullshit. If you're working to overcome the "fight or flight" habits of a traumatic childhood, it can be really freaking tough... but luckily we have Shannon and Elisha show us how it's done, right, and in real time. Bonus: Shannon's update on a girlfriend break-up, and a happy ending a decade in the making!
How do you know your podcast has hit the big time? When someone bids on a special guest spot at The Struggle Is Real event auction... and it's not one of your friends. Elisha and Shannon are delighted to sit with Ajay and Lindsay, co-founders of Momentum Chiropractic and Sports Medicine in Hillsboro - a "one stop shop" covering multiple chiropractic modalities (cupping, Graston tools, massage, women's health, etc). These two beautiful badasses launched Momentum amidst quitting their full time jobs, buying a house, and organizing their wedding, and while their practice is less than a year old, they are thriving due to hard work, a strong, interactive social media presence, and connecting with the local fitness community. This hilarious episode covers it all - from getting rolfed for research (ie: a finger up your butt), pooping yourself during a marathon (it's a thing), and why Shannon's FitBit thinks she's bedridden.
