Now seems as good a time as any to welcome back climber and software engineer Mike Doyle. Mike appeared on Clipping Chains for a written interview in February of 2020. At the time, I was curious as to how he managed to climb at an elite level while juggling a very demanding remote job. Mike was still managing to travel to multiple places a year for months at a time, taking his full-time+ job along with him. After the arrival of the pandemic and surge in remote work, Mike's original interview feels so much more relevant. In the intervening time, my wife and I have also experienced living and working while traveling, so my thoughts on this lifestyle have evolved dramatically. With all this in mind, the timing feels right to have Mike on for a deeper dive on the realities of the remote work lifestyle.Support this project: Buy Me a CoffeeSubscribe to the website: SUBSCRIBE ME!Topics Discussed with Mike DoyleMike's background in computer science and thoughts on the current and future job market in that fieldMike's history of remote work, travel, and early days of van living. This week's story occurred in Littlefield, Arizona in 2018. Jerry and Susan McFalls, both 62, were retired and owned a home in West Jordan, Utah and a second home in Littlefield, Arizona. Family said they often travelled between homes. Before they went missing in January 2018, they told family they were leaving Littlefield and returning home to West Jordan. But they never made it back home. The local sheriff's office served a search warrant and visited the Littlefield home to find out what happened to the missing elderly couple. The house was unlocked and their two dogs were inside with no food or water. Deputies found a purse, wallet and cellphone left on the kitchen table. It was as if they had just both vanished. There was a witness who saw the couple climb into an SUV that has never been located. On October 18, 2018, the remains of two unidentified people were located in the desert near the Virgin River Gorge in Arizona. Authorities identified the human remains as Jerry and Susan McFalls, a West Jordan couple who went missing over three years ago. The Mohave County sheriff's office announced someone had murdered the couple. For this episode, I spoke to Bob Hutchinson, the nephew of Jerry and Susan McFalls who shares his thoughts on Jerry and Susan's unsolved homicides. Jerry and Susan McFalls split their time between two homes that they owned. One was in Littlefield, Arizona and the other was in West Jordan, Utah. Since they were retired, they spent most of the winter months at the Arizona property. On January 11, 2018, Susan texted her daughter-in-law, Meridee, letting her know they were going to be making the trip back to Utah that weekend. Jerry and Susan never made it back and were never seen again. When no one heard from them for several days, they began trying to track them down. They realized that no one had seen them during the time they planned to be in Utah. Meridee contacted law enforcement in Arizona to go check on them. A deputy went out to their home and all of their belongings, including vehicles, were there. Music was playing outside, the television was on, it appeared as though Susan was in the middle of cooking dinner. Despite many searches, no trace of Jerry and Susan has been found.UPDATE: On October 18, 2018, two sets of remains were located near the Virgin River Gorge. On November 1, 2018, they were able to identify one of the sets of remains as belonging to Susan McFalls. The other set of remains is still pending identification. On January 30, 2020, it was finally announced that the other set of remains found in 2018 was identified as Jerry McFalls. There is currently a reward of $10,000 for information regarding the whereabouts of Jerry and Susan McFalls. If you have any information, please call the Mohave County Sheriff’s Department at 928-753-0753.The family has also set up a Facebook page: Missing Help find Susan and Jerry McFalls and a website mcfallsmystery.com that provides a timeline and links to additional information on the disappearance of Jerry and Susan McFalls. The episode was co-researched and written by Marissa Jones and Erika Gwynn. About Dan Mirsky Dan Mirsky is an understated crusher. I’ve been watching him gracefully take down rock climbs all over the country for the last 10 years. In 2013, we witnessed his fitness (literally) in The Red when we were next door neighbors at Lago Linda’s. And then a few months later he was kind enough to show us around The Cathedral/Wailing Wall, giving Seth and me encyclopedic beta on the entire crag from the ground. He chucked a couple laps on Golden (14b) that day right after sending Route of All Evil (14a) in the Virgin River Gorge that morning. Mirsky is PSYCHED to climb and psyched to see others succeed. He’s a bright-eyed, happy, almost boyish guy with a sneaky sense of humor and a willingness to get a little crazy with friends. He knows everything about the places he climbs because he’s obsessed with all things climbing. He’s sent 30+ 5.14’s up to 5.14c, having taken down The Crew (14c), 50 Words for Pump (14b), Bad Girls Club (14c), Lungfish (14b), and lots of other hard stuff, including an FA of Solid Gold (14c), the direct line to Golden (read his “The Day I Sent Solid Gold” from EveningSends.com). Dan Mirsky Interview Details Last year, Dan did the Black Diamond Bootcamp with Joe Kinder and Sam Elias, and he experienced some serious gains on actual rock because of it. Because of that success and his newfound psych for training in a structured way, he took a job as a trainer in Salt Lake City at The Training Room at The Front. In this second interview with Dan Mirsky we talk about his BD Bootcamp success and the novel concept that is The Training Room. How the BD Bootcamp changed him Sending spree followed by plateau Started training other people The Training Room - what is it? Cardio habits now? Diet is super important to him Current projects and city life
Direct Download: LINKDate: March 30th, 2015 About Mike Doyle Mike Doyle is a full time(+) computer programmer in his late 30's who crushes hard rock climbs. He's a Vegas local who has devoted the last several seasons to the route Necessary Evil (classic 5.14c) in the Virgin River Gorge, and finally sent it this past spring. He's Canadian, and helped train Sean McColl back when he was training youth competition climbers and competing himself. He's climbed all over the world, having sent numerous 5.14's, all while ambitiously pursuing a career he loves. What we talked about: How he efficiently trained for Necessary Evil How his training has evolved over the years The creative ways he manages to work so many hours AND climb so much outside His thoughts on diet and body weight, and how he lost weight for Necessary Evil Related Links Mike Doyle's website: www.mikedoyle.ca Video about Mike Doyle's persistence on Necessary Evil Support The Podcast Check out the Bouldering Strength and Power program for boulderers of all abilities. About Dan Mirsky Dan Mirsky is an understated crusher. I've been watching him gracefully take down rock climbs in Rifle for as long as I've been climbing there. Last year we witnessed his fitness (literally) in The Red when we were next door neighbors at Lago Linda's last year. He knows everything about the places he climbs because he's obsessed with all things climbing. He's sent 30+ 5.14's up to 5.14c, having taken down Carry the Fire (14c), 50 Words for Pump (14b), Bad Girls Club (14c), Lungfish (14b), and lots of other hard stuff, including an FA of Solid Gold (14c), the direct line to Golden (read his "The Day I Sent Solid Gold" from EveningSends.com). He lives part time on the road and part time at his house in Carbondale. He dates my good friend and fellow TrainingBeta worker bee, Katy Dannenberg (you may have noticed her posting a bunch of awesome stuff on our Facebook page recently?), and together they are the hardest training couple I've ever known. If they're not climbing, they're doing CrossFit workouts outside of the Airstream, running half marathons, doing yoga, or hangboarding on their portable A-frame hangboard. So how does Dan Mirsky do it? He doesn't even live in a city with a climbing gym and yet he's consistently killing it. He'll tell you all about it in the interview. What We Talked About How he financially manages to live on the road for most of the year How he stays strong on long trips to the Red or other areas What he thinks doing cardio has done for his climbing How he stays super ripped and lean without starving himself (he eats - I've seen it myself) The wise advice he gave me about projecting Related Links A more complete bio on Dan Mirsky on Millet.com, one of his sponsors.
