"So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love" by Cal Newport is a thought-provoking book that challenges the conventional wisdom of "follow your passion." Newport argues that passion alone is not enough to build a successful and fulfilling career. Instead, he emphasises the importance of developing rare and valuable skills that can set you apart in the job market. Newport introduces the concept of "career capital," which refers to the skills and abilities that one accumulates through deliberate practice and hard work. He suggests that by focussing on building career capital, individuals can gain more control over their professional lives and create opportunities for meaningful and satisfying work.

So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love. Cal Newport's clearly-written manifesto flies in the face of conventional wisdom by suggesting that it should be a person's talent and skill - and not necessarily their passion - that determines their career path. Newport, who graduated from Dartmouth College (Phi Beta Kappa) and earned a PhD. from MIT, contends that trying to find what drives us, instead of focusing on areas in which we naturally excel, is ultimately harmful and frustrating to job seekers. Read Book Summary: https://readersbooksclub.com/ Watch us on YT: / readersbooksclub Connect with us on: Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/readersbook... Deep WorkDeep Work Full Chapter Brief The rapid development of Internet technology and smart products has provided people with a lot of convenience. Meanwhile, all kinds of notifications and messages mean people's working time has become highly fragmented. The author keenly points out that more than 60% of knowledge workers' work time is spent on shallow work. This type of work not only yields limited output value but also permanently reduces people's capacity to work deeply! This book describes how to train the brain to eliminate distractions, improve deep work ability, and create more value. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today, we will unlock the book Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World. If you probe into the experiences of some prominent figures in history, you will find that deep work is pivotal to their success in their respective fields. American author Mark Twain's masterpiece, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, was mostly done in a shed at the Quarry Farm in New York. His workplace, the shed was so far from the main house where his family lived that they had to call him to dinner by blowing a horn. The theoretical physicist Peter Higgs worked in a nearly secluded environment and refused to use a computer. When Higgs won the Nobel Prize, journalists couldn't even locate him. The novelist J.K. Rowling would stay away from social media while writing Harry Potter. For the first year and a half after opening her Twitter account, she posted only one tweet: "This is the real me, but you won't be hearing from me often I'm afraid, as pen and paper is my priority at the moment." Unlike these highly influential figures, more and more knowledge workers are straying away from deep work. FranklinCovey, a company specializing in training to improve organizational and personal effectiveness, has tracked more than 350,000 employees worldwide. According to its findings, these employees have wasted 40% of their work time on things that don't matter. In this speed first web-centric era, people have embraced the Internet and remain instantly connected. Knowledge workers dedicate most of their work time to emails, meetings, and social media, yet their essential tasks have been delayed. In this business environment, how can we yield valuable results and stand out in the workplace? In an age of highly fragmented working time, the approach to deep work proposed in Deep Work makes even more sense. It helps ordinary people become the winners of today's age. In the meantime, we can get gratification from deep work. While arguing for the importance of deep work, Deep Work also provides a systematic way to train our brains to eliminate distractions. Furthermore, the book helps us improve our ability to think deeply and thus create more value. The author, Cal Newport, received his Ph.D. in computer science from MIT and is currently an associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University. He is also a bestselling author. Besides this book, Newport's bestselling works also include How to Win at College: Surprising Secrets for Success from the Country's Top Students, How to Become a Straight-A Student, How to Be a High School Superstar: A Revolutionary Plan to Get into College by Standing Out, and So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love. He is also the founder of the popular blog Study Hacks, which is dedicated to decoding success patterns in work and study. In this Bookey session, we will look at how ordinary people can be the winners of our time by looking at the following three parts: Part One: Why do we need deep...

Now seems as good a time as any to welcome back climber and software engineer Mike Doyle. Mike appeared on Clipping Chains for a written interview in February of 2020. At the time, I was curious as to how he managed to climb at an elite level while juggling a very demanding remote job. Mike was still managing to travel to multiple places a year for months at a time, taking his full-time+ job along with him. After the arrival of the pandemic and surge in remote work, Mike's original interview feels so much more relevant. In the intervening time, my wife and I have also experienced living and working while traveling, so my thoughts on this lifestyle have evolved dramatically. With all this in mind, the timing feels right to have Mike on for a deeper dive on the realities of the remote work lifestyle.Support this project: Buy Me a CoffeeSubscribe to the website: SUBSCRIBE ME!Topics Discussed with Mike DoyleMike's background in computer science and thoughts on the current and future job market in that fieldMike's history of remote work, travel, and early days of van living. What is your purpose? How do you find meaning in what you do so that you can make a lasting impact? In this episode of Reflect Forward: Advice From a CEO, I talk about how to go about finding your person. In my opinion, you can combine a few things to develop purpose: being of service to others, trying new things, stretching myself around my strengths and weaknesses, and being good at what I do. Doing these things is how you bring value to the world. Aligning your work with personal purpose is an integral part of being fulfilled at work. I'm sure you've heard, “do what you love; turn your passion into your work!” Despite its feel-good intent, it's not great counsel. “Passion is not something you follow,” says Cal Newport, author of “So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Search for Work You Love." “Passion is something that will follow you as you put in the hard work to become valuable to the world.” Most highly skilled people are that way because they worked hard at becoming their very best. In the episode, I talk about Michael Jordan, believed to be the best basketball player of all time. Remarkably, he was uninterested in sports as an adolescent. Considered too short by his coaches, he didn't make the 9th-grade basketball team. But as he put in the work, it became his passion, and he overcame all obstacles. And once he realized that it took a team, he became a legend when he started serving the team rather than himself. While most of us will never be the Michael Jordan of our professions, we can learn from his dedication to hard work, practicing, building upon his strengths, even making weaknesses strengths, and ultimately serving his team and fans. It's rewarding to be great at something, and since you spend 8+ hours a day at work, you must find purpose in your work. If you do, it might just turn into your passion. Listen in to hear my tips on how to find your purpose. Question of the Episode The question of the episode comes from my mother, who, after reading my recent article in Forbes about overcoming addiction, asked me, “Aren't you worried about what people think, especially your employees?” I gave her a resounding, “NO!” There is so much stigma around addiction, mental health issues, insecurity issues that people hide what's going on inside. The only way to break this taboo is to speak openly about who we are. Radical transparency is incredibly powerful, and impactful leaders aren't afraid to be vulnerable and share their stories. Listen in to hear more. You can read the Forbes article here: https://www.forbes.com/sites/melodywilding/2021/08/31/what-a-drug-overdose-taught-this-ceo-about-leadership/?sh=536a1fe1db62 I'll leave you with one of my favorite Viktor Frankel quotes “It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life and think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life—daily and hourly. Our answer must consist, not in talk and meditation, but right action and right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual.” ― Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning

Julie Wandzilak is a Tier X Coach / Personal Trainer at Equinox. She earned her Health Sciences bachelor's degree at Sacred Heart University. In this episode, Julie shares how creating true life experiences by means of creating authentic relationships with your clients and even with people you meet on and offline provides a lasting impact on you and your business. The way you relate to them comes from first knowing yourself and that self-awareness. So, then you know how to create genuine relationships and connections with people for life. Julie also talks about Equinox's educational system and how someone who becomes a trainer goes through the tier process and rises through the ranks. She made a point to touch on the importance of work-life balance. Has anyone ever told you that if you want to truly be happy, you should follow your passions? How would you feel if I told you that following your passions is a terrible idea? What does it even mean to have a ‘Good Job‘? How do you actually earn a ‘Good Job‘?In this episode the humans discuss Cal Newport’s So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love. Touching on how to find a job you actually enjoy, how to actually get said job, and the mindsets you’ll need along the way.
Skill or talent? Which one do you have, and more importantly, which one do you need to start a great creative business?By working through several scenarios, we'll help you begin to assess whether something is a skill or a talent. This is a great exercise to gauge how you think about the difference between the two and the importance of those differences. In this episode, Nathan and Barrett discuss the mental mindsets that push people to view things as skills and talents, how you can develop your skills, and what role passion plays in all of them. Also, a special announcement about the future of the show!Main Takeaways Many people chalk up their ability to execute as a skill or talent because of past experience. If you shift your mindset, you'll shift your ability to do things. Attributes aren't the same as skills. They simply make learning a skill easier (or harder). Passion follows effort, not the other way around. True passion comes from being dedicated to something long enough to get good at it. Parents can model for their children how to be exposed to different things and cultivate their child's interests. This week during the blitz of U.S. election news, there was an article gaining some traction called “Seven Life Lessons Everyone Should Learn Sooner Rather Than Later” by Nicholas Cole who Carrie wants to call Nicholas Cage because she is old like that. Carrie has a tendency to hate these kind of articles because she thinks they are trite and insipid. But his first point hit home. It was, “If you want to ‘do what you love,’ you have to work three times as hard as everyone else.” N.Cole“Most people do not get to spend their lives doing whatever it is they love. Instead, they do what they are told they should do or what their parents or town or friends or peers suggest that they do. Or they simply pursue nothing close to their heart at all.” Is this you? Do you love something? Do you do it? He said, “But if you want to do what you love, you need to see that as a privilege, not an expectation.” Which is interesting. What does that mean, right? Carrie does what she loves. But to be fair, Carrie loves everything she does whether it’s being a YMCA gymnastics coach, a church secretary, a student, a newspaper editor. “I love all the things,” Carrie says. Cole never says anything about his assertion that you have to work three times harder to do what you love. And we're not sure where that comes from because he doesn’t source anything. It might just be a generalization, but we wanted to make sure. WORST CAREER ADVICE EVER? Despite an exhaustive internet search of five minutes, we couldn’t find anything that backed Cole’s assertion, but we did find an article by Jeff Haden, which said the worst career advice is to do what you love. He quotes Cal Newport, Georgetown University professor and author of So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Search For Work You Love. Cal Newport"Telling someone to follow their passion--from an entrepreneur's point of view--is disastrous. That advice has probably resulted in more failed businesses than all the recessions combined... because that's not how the vast majority of people end up owning successful businesses. "Passion is not something you follow," he adds. "Passion is something that will follow you as you put in the hard work to become valuable to the world." According to Haden, passions are a bad choice because: They take time to cultivate. It’s rare to actually have a career passion. Passion is a side effect of mastery at something. Working hard and improving your skills is more important than finding the perfect job. Haden“Roughly speaking, work can be broken down into a job, a career, or a calling. A job pays the bills; a career is a path towards increasingly better work; a calling is work that is an important part of your life and a vital part of your identity. (Clearly most people want their work to be a calling.) “According to research, what is the strongest predictor of a person seeing her work as a calling? “The number of years spent on the job. The more experience you have the more likely you are to love your work. “Why? The more experience you have the better your skills and the greater your satisfaction in having those skills. The more experience you have the more you can see how your work has benefited others. And you've had more time to develop strong professional and even personal relationships with some of your employees, vendors, and customers.” For the rest of the podcast notes (which don't fit here), check out www.carriejonesbooks.blog --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carriejonesbooks/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carriejonesbooks/support

Once in a while you come across a concept that really changes the way you think and approach things. This is true of Cal Newport's book, So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love. Basic concept: Passion follows mastery. Coaches love things like “passion.” Maybe too much. We're not saying passion doesn't matter; we're just saying that sitting around waiting for passion is a poor strategy. Try things and see what stirs your interest. Let the interest develop into skill, and then mastery will unlock passion. Usefulness in coaching: · When a client is trying to “discover” passion. · Career coaching. · When faced with a challenge that's a bit too much, passion is lacking.

He also shares his advice for receiving the support you need from family and friends! Sean McMullin is the co-founder of Yellow House Media, a full-service podcast production agency & consultancy that he owns with his wife, Tara. Sean, a then distribution manager at a brewery in Oregon, met Tara, owner of a small business consultancy, on OkCupid and it wasn't long before Sean found himself swirling around in the world of entrepreneurship. Shortly thereafter, he took on the role of producing Tara's podcast, “What Works” and recently they both made the leap and started their own business, Yellow House Media. Sean is the lead consultant for production and management and specializes in building efficient procedures, effective guest management, quality audio production, and editorial management. He brings his background in writing, photography, and underground media to every show he produces. Sean loves getting out in the woods as much as possible and has a goal to visit all 59 national parks with his wife by 2027. This episode is for you if you want to learn: How to navigate the situation where a partner, friend or family member doesn't understand entrepreneurship. Why a Mastermind can save your relationship. The key to a strong marriage. How Sean ensures that he is showing up in his marriage, business and the world in the way he wants. Two outdated concepts that hold women entrepreneurs back, what needs to change and how to be part of the transformation. The importance of boundaries and how to set them in personal and professional relationships. One thing to do when you need to reset as a couple. The first step to take if you are considering starting a podcast. A question to ask yourself to make taking a risk in your business easier. And so much more! Cal Newport is a computer science professor at Georgetown University and the author of 6 books, including New York Times bestseller Digital Minimalism. His writing focuses on the impact of new technology and social media on our ability to be productive and lead satisfying lives. Not surprisingly, his research suggests we’re becoming less connected and getting less done as technology permeates every moment of our day. For this podcast, I got to sit down face to face with Cal to discuss his ideas on digital minimalism. He describes how big business has manipulated us into constantly checking our phones, and is now profiting off of our attention. We discuss the consequences of pervasive technology, and the damaging effect it can have on our drive to create and connect with others in meaningful ways. Here's an interview I did with the Your Financial Pharmacist Podcast, "Episode 91- BECOMING AN ENTREPRENEUR: THE FIT PHARMACIST" with Tim Church! "On this episode of the Your Financial Pharmacist Podcast, Tim Church interviews Dr. Adam Martin about becoming an entrepreneur for another edition of the side hustle series. Adam has been practicing as a pharmacist in the community practice setting for over 7 years, in addition to being a certified personal trainer, licensed nutrition consultant, author, speaker, and competitive natural bodybuilder. ABOUT TODAY'S GUEST Graduating from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, Dr. Adam Martin has worked as a full-time pharmacist in the community practice setting for over 7 years, in addition to being a certified personal trainer, licensed nutrition consultant, author, speaker, and competitive natural bodybuilder. His passion and focus is empowering pharmacy students and pharmacists to overcome the barriers we face in pharmacy to make self-care a reality. He outlines how to do this with practical and realistic tips in this book Rx: YOU! In his book, Dr. Martin dispenses his Rx for success in how to simplify nutrition, fit in fitness, and manage stress so that you can become The FitPharmacist and put the health back into healthcare. SUMMARY It's easy to hear Dr. Adam Martin's passion for self-care, pharmacy, fitness, and life. While Adam's mother was sick with cancer, he spent a lot of time with her going to pharmacies and noticed how compassionate pharmacists were in caring for his mother. He wanted to continue that care and empathy for patients as a pharmacist and was driven to become one, despite not being accepted to pharmacy school at first. Adam's been a practicing community pharmacist for 7 years and loves his work. He enjoys being able to build a rapport and relationship with patients and feels that every interaction is important and directly impacts someone's life. His passion for his pharmacy career floods into every other aspect of his life and is apparent in his entrepreneurial journey. In college, Adam started helping his colleagues with their fitness and health journeys. This ultimately formed a community and inspired him to create an Instagram account (@thefitpharmacist) which currently has over 30,000 followers. Now, The Fit Pharmacist business has 3 tiers which include nutrition, health coaching, and physical fitness. In his business, Adam continues to help pharmacists and pharmacy students put the health back in health care and truly take care of themselves so they can better serve their patients. Hello everyone and welcome to episode 14, Relationship Skills - Level 4. This episode is the last of our series on the 4 levels of relationship skills. But before we dive into this topic, I want to share some listener responses to our podcast that have been coming in since we started at the end of November 2018. December 19. Hi John, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the last two podcasts specific to joy. It made so much sense to me. ~ C.M. - Wisconsin December 24. Hello John, Your message is timely for me this season. And I very much appreciate your appreciation of the women in your life! Thank you. ~ M.J.B. - Wisconsin, the only state in the union with “sin” in its name. December 25. Just wanted to let you know that I have listened to the first five installments of your podcast and was impressed with the professionalism of its production. I particularly liked #5 The Gift of Joy Part 1. Haven’t listened to Part 2 yet. ~ E.L. - Iowa December 28 Dear John, The days of December have whisked by with preparations and then carrying out about 7 major events in my home, work at the orphanage, and one on one visits. Because of that I have missed 4-7, but am taking a day off today to rest and regroup (tomorrow is the last outreach for us in Dec.) I will have the great joy of listening to all of them today. Thank you for your faithfulness. I feel like you are my Pastor. ~ D.W. I have more responses that I’ll share next week. I would love to hear from more of you about what you find helpful and meaningful from the podcast. Not for my benefit, but more as an encouragement to the community of listeners to the podcast that is slowly developing. Okay. Back to the topic of today’s show. It was just last week a listener ran into my wife Janet and was talking to her about this series on relationship skills. She commented something along the lines of, “I’m not sure which of the relationship skill levels is most characteristic of me.” Maybe you’re wondering the same thing. It’s a useful question to consider, because it will help us know how far we have to go to get to the top level of relationship skills, which is the focus of today’s episode. Here are a few questions we can ask ourselves to determine the level of our relational development: 1. In thinking about relationship difficulties you have, does the thought ever occur to you that the source of those difficulties might be YOU? Do you notice you lack some basic relational skills? Are you even aware that relationships are a problem for you? If you answered “No” to any of these questions you are at level 1, the Unconsciously unskilled (U.U.) level of relationship skills. If you answered YES to any of these questions, congratulations, because you are making progress! You are at level 2 of your relational development, Consciously unskilled (C.U.) You know you are making mistakes in your relationships, but you don’t know what to do about it. 2. If your lack of relational skill does not concern you, and you accept the fact that this is just the way you are, this is where you will remain. Consciously unskilled in your relationships. Your relational difficulties may be so troublesome, that you resign yourself into thinking that things will probably never change. So why even try. On the other hand, if you want to change and want to get better at relationships, no matter how overwhelming some of them might be, you are well positioned to move up to level 3, Consciously skilled (C.S.) You are at the Consciously skilled (C.S.) level when you start to see progress in how you relate to others. You’re not perfect by any means, and the progress may be slight, but in some areas you see real growth in how you relate that is different from how you may have related to people in the past. You may be less critical and more willing to extend grace. You may let other talk more than you when you’re with friends. You may ask people to clarify more often what they mean, rather than your natural tendency to make assumptions. You may have always been a good listener, and you want to continue to nurture this skill. If any of this is true for you, you are at level 3, Consciously skilled (C.S.). As good as it is to be at level 3, there’s an even higher level of relationship skills. Level 4- Unconsciously skilled (U.S.) This is where you are skilled at relating with people and you’re not even aware of it. It’s woven into the fabric of your character. It’s who you are. You may not have always been this way, but over time relating well with people has become second nature to you. You’re kind without thinking about it. You give people the benefit of the doubt as a matter of course. You see your own pride and selfishness rearing it’s ugly head from time to time, and you take action to squelch it. You discern the motives of people without being judgmental. Compassion for others comes naturally for you. You are Unconsciously skilled (U.S.) The $64,000 question is this, How do I become Unconsciously skilled in my relationships? It starts with what I mentioned in episode 13 about level 3 of relationship skill development. I said that to become skilled in our relationships is to listen to 3 different sources of relational wisdom - Listen to our self. Listen to others. Listen to God. When we pour our energies and focus into listening to these sources of relational wisdom, especially listening to God, when we do this well, and do it often, over time, like any other skill we practice, in time our relational skills will improve to the point they’re embedded in the DNA of our character. But it takes time and a desire to want to improve our relational skills. We have to want to. This “want to” is what I mentioned in episode 10, Two Features of Every Good Relationship. Listening to self, for example, is for the purpose of creating a feedback loop to alert us to mistakes we make in our relationships. From this, we can take steps to correct them. For example, do you ever wonder if you talk too much when you’re with friends? I do. I can usually tell later when I replay a conversation in my mind and realize later I didn’t learn what was happening in the lives of my friends. I took up all the air time so they couldn’t talk. I’ll try harder next time to let others have the floor. The more we practice self-editing, we can over time become more unconsciously skilled in our relationships. Listening to others, particularly writers and speakers, and putting into practice what they teach, is a great source of wisdom. Here’s just one example, I find myself applying some of the things I learned in Cal Newport’s book, So Good They Can’t Ignore You - Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for the Work You Love. It is a great book on the importance of skills, and the relative un-importance of passion. He talks about developing a “craftsman mindset where you focus relentlessly on what value you’re offering the world. This stands in stark contrast to the much more common passion mindset which lets you focus on what value the world is offering you.” Newport’s focus ion the book is developing career skills that are valued in the marketplace, but the principles he discusses apply just as much to our relationship skills I hadn’t thought about this until just now, so one could say I was unconsciously skilled in learning from the wisdom and experience of others. As helpful as it is to listen to ourselves, and to listen to the wisdom of others, the most fulfilling and exciting means to become unconsciously skilled in our relationships is to frequently listen to God. I’ll close with a story of how a couple of my friends were unconsciously skilled in caring for me. Hopefully it will encourage you that you too can become unconsciously skilled in your relationships. I call it my Balloon story. I write about it extensively in a memoir I wrote in 2016, THEM - The Richer Life Found in Caring for Others. I’ll put a link to it in the show notes, as well as a link to the Cal Newport book I referenced, So Good They Can’t Ignore You. [story was shared on the podcast] Before I close, here’s the he main take-away from today’s episode, our show in a sentence The more we monitor ourselves, learn from the wisdom of others, and listen to God, the more unconsciously skilled we’ll become in our relationships. Here’s a way you can respond to today’s show: Start with devoting just the next 5 days to applying one or more of the the principles we’ve been talking about the past few episodes. Be directed in how to do so by listening to yourself, to others, or to God himself. Coming up next week I’ll be reading more listeners responses to our podcast so far, and I’d love to hear from you about how the podcast is helping you. By sharing this will hopefully encourage others in transforming their relationships into the best they can be. You can leave your thoughts in the comment box in the show notes, or you can send an email to me, john {at} caring for others, {dot} org. You can also private message me in Facebook. In addition to sharing listener comments next week, we’ll also look at some concrete practical things we can do to deepen our relationship with others. Quote of the Week We were together. Cal Newport is a computer science professor at Georgetown University and the author of a brand new book called Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World. He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, specializing in the theory of distributed systems. He has two other books, entitled Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World and So Good They Can’t Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love. What is Digital Minimalism? Cal says It's a movement. And it's a like a rebellion. It's a rebellion against this idea that these small number of companies in Northern California (Twitter, Facebook, Google) should really dictate how we spend our time, and how we feel, and how we think. In recent years people have come to realize it is a problem to be so wrapped up and addicted to social media and technology in general. And people say, "I wanna create my own life, and I'll use technology on my own damn terms." When asked why he wrote his latest book, Cal says it is because in the last two years or so, there has been this shift where people stopped making self-deprecating jokes about how often they check their phone and started to actually get really concerned. People got past this notion of like, "Oh, this is all fun, and maybe I use it too much," and really began to get worried that there were serious impacts on the quality of their life being caused by the digital tools in their personal life. And they were getting fed up. They wanted more than just tips. There seemed to be a need in the marketplace for a strong response. He came up with a strong aggressive response if you want to take back your personal life from a lot of those digital distractions. And it was out of that, that Digital Minimalism was born. And it’s not just our personal lives that are affected by technology. In the workplace we are just constantly communicating all day long. It's essentially an ongoing, ad hoc, unstructured conversation. Messages and chats and texts just bouncing back and forth. We're all a part of this sort of big organizational conversation. We sort of just try to figure things out on the fly. Cal says the problem is that it turns out to be exactly the wrong way to work, if what you need to do is actually use your brain to produce new value. And this is the huge conflict that's driving people crazy in the workplace today, is that knowledge work requires people to use their brains, process information, concentrate on the information, and produce new valuable information. But it is impossible to do that when we have our concentration divided among hundreds of emails, constant IMs from coworkers, text messages, Skype messages, etc… So we're living, essentially, a contradiction. We're working in a way that makes us really bad at working. And this is a really reason why Cal thinks so many people are getting so frustrated and feeling so burnt out about what it means to work in the digital age. Three reasons why digital minimalism works: Clutter is costly – too many apps or services Optimization is important Intentionality trumps convenience Cal doesn’t believe that technology in and of itself is a bad thing, but we have to find ways to step away from it to really let our minds work they way they were meant to, to really be able to connect one on one with other human beings, and to be able to rest and recharge. Things you will learn: Why Cal doesn’t engage in social media like Facebook or Twitter Why he chose to write the book How to do a 30-day digital declutter, in which you wipe the slate clean, not of work stuff, but of optional personal technology Whether or not Cal is worried about the future The three principles of digital minimalism How you can start implementing digital minimalism today Strategies Jacob is using to manage his technology use Contacts: CalNewport.com.
In today's episode of Confessions of a Top-Producing Real Estate Agent, my bookclub co-host, and Agent Grad School graduate, Amy Wease, and I talk about the Entrepreneurial Real Estate Agent Book Club's monthly book choice “So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love” by Cal Newport. The concept for this book came to the author, Cal Newport, as he was watching a Charlie Rose interview where he asks Steve Martin what advice he'd give other actors to become successful and Steve says, “it's not what the want to hear. What they want to hear is how to get an agent, how to get a TV show, but what they need to be successful is to be so good they can't ignore you.” Those few words not only launched an entire book, but also is the topic of today's podcast. How can we be so good we can't be ignored AND how can we avoid passion burnout? Full show notes at https://agentgradschool.com/008

Many years ago I read a book with a quote from Steve Martin as the title that really hit home for me. Not only has the quote been etched into my mind ever since, I also have a poster of it up in my office, a screenshot on my desktop, and note cards with the phrase written on them. Excessive? Maybe, but maybe not. This quote reminds me to focus on the process while highlighting an important fact: no one is to blame for my failures, and it is my responsibility to hone my skills so that I don’t get ignored in the areas I want to excel in. Whether it’s personal or business, the advice and perspective I give in this episode will help you focus on the right things to help you achieve the things that you want. Taking control of your nutrition and lifestyle choices, becoming the best at your skill — and getting recognized for it — creating deep meaningful relationships, creating wealth, or just being able to dominate pick up basketball at your local gym, all comes down to this mindset. Discover what it is and examples of how to take action on it. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN: How Steve Martin figured out the principle that helped him (in spite of some huge struggles) become one of the best and most recognized comedians in the world The secret to reverse engineering any type of success you want to achieve — no matter the area of focus (i.e. your body, mindset, relationships, business, or anything in between) How to know if you’re mixing up the steps in the process and hindering your own success What to do if you caught in a cycle of falling on and off of your wagon to progress How my friend Hieu used the same process to put on 25 lbs of muscle and get leaner, while becoming a pretty damn good photographer using this same step-by-step approach The mystery of why so many of the world's greatest artists came from one small city in Italy in a very short time period in history, and why they are still considered among the best to this day. I’ll teach you how to steal their secret How I developed myself as a strength coach while training 5-6 hours a day and playing professional basketball **This is the key to how you can change anything in your life right now My rant on whether you should be teaching a certain skill set to someone else or focusing on yourself and succeeding at that craft first How Tony Robbins fast-forwarded his success with this strategy and how you can use it in your field/industry LINKS AND RESOURCES: Book: So Good They Can’t Ignore You - Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest For The Work You Love (Cal Newport) Book: Deep Work: Rules For Focused Success In A Distracted World (Cal Newport) Vigor Life Podcast on iTunes (Subscribe) Thanks so much for joining me this week. "How can we turn observations into action?"- Derek Sivers I'm so thrilled to have the privilage of interviewing today's guest on the Art of Adventure. He has been a mentor to me for many years, and he rarely grants interviews, so I take it as a huge honor to have Derek Sivers on the show! Plus, this is the first time another Derek has been on the podcast! I've been following the Derek's work for many years. Often, he will end a blog post by extending an offer to email him directly with questions. I first sent him an email more than five years ago and we have been in touch since then. Originally a professional musician and circus clown, Derek created CD Baby in 1998. It became the largest seller of independent music online, with $100M in sales for 150,000 musicians. In 2008, Derek sold CD Baby for $22M, giving the proceeds to a charitable trust for music education. He is a frequent speaker at the TED Conference, with over 5 million views of his talks. Since 2011 he has published 34 books, including “Anything You Want†which shot to #1 on all of its Amazon categories. I finally got to meet Derek at his home while I was visiting Wellington, NZ in May. Derek is one of the greatest philosophers of our day, and has clear thoughts about careers, propose, learning, and being of value to the world. One interesting fact Derek reveals in this episode is that despite being an introvert, he went so far as to hold 500+ 1-on-1 get togethers while living in Singapore with people that wanted to learn from him. In this episode talk about building a career that makes you happy, how to learn from your work, compressing books into directives, how to get rich, mentorship, introversion, CD Baby, and global citizenship, and some of the adventures that Derek has had that helped him change his mind about Indonesia and weight lifting. I know you will love this interview. Quotes: "You should never work for just money" - Derek Sivers "Everything I do is in service of my future self" - Derek Sivers "Money can be a measure of the value you provide" - Derek Sivers "Is humbleness holding you back from being more useful?" - Derek Sivers "Adventure has to stretch your self-image" - Derek Sivers "Adventure changes personal prejudice - a thought you held, something you would never do" - Derek Sivers "It doesn't count as adventure if you come back the same" - Derek Sivers "Delayed gratification is an indicator of success"- Derek Sivers What you will learn in this episode: -The difference between future and present focused individuals -How to consider the lifetime value of an interaction -How Derek is compressing books in to simple directives: "Do this..." -How to get rich: "Pursue market value instead of personal value" "Live where luck strikes and be in the game" "Say yes to everything and keep in touch with everyone" -Why you should outsource 90% of your mentorship to books -How and why Derek maintains multiple citizenship and legal resident status in NZ, Belgium, and Singapore -How to deal with the ideas of passion and purpose -How to choose where to live in the world (live where luck strikes) - Continue the Adventure: Derek' home site: Sivers.org Derek's mentor: Seth Godin Wood Egg: Entrepreneurs Guides to Asia Anything You Want: 40 Lessons for a New Kind of Entrepreneur So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love Michael Pollans book on food directives: Food Rules: An Eater's Manual Book directive videos from The Conference: How to thrive in an unknowable future How to like people Thanks Derek Sivers! Have you ever wondered if there was a way to be more excited about your work? How should we get there? Is "follow your passion" the best career advice? Today's guest on the Art of Adventure gives us a compelling case as to why following your passion is bad advice! He wrote the book So Good They Can't Ignore You, which investigates just that. I have to admit, at first I was a little wary, but I think it's really important to listen to the dissenting opinion sometimes - to consider that what you know (about work in this case) is not the complete picture. Cal Newport wrote this book because he was making a big life transition - should he move into professorship after finishing grad school - or choose another career path? With that question in mind he set out to find what makes someone love what they do for a living and feel fulfilled by their work. This book follows a general trend of Cal's: when he wants to learn something, he digs in and then writes a book about it. His former works include How to Be a High School Superstar and How to Win at College. What he discovered by talking with people from a variety of careers, who love what they do, might surprise you. If you are beginning your career or thinking about the next direction you want to take your working life, this is the episode for you! Quotes from the interview: "Adventure is when you leave a dent in the universe" - Cal Newport "Go at making something that didn't exist before" - Cal Newport "What am I going to get better at?" - Cal Newport "Everything interesting is 10 times harder than you thought it would be" - Cal Newport "A broad array of experiences is a recipe for an interesting life" - Cal Newport What you will learn in this episode: -How to gain control over your work -How to deconstruct the careers of stars in your field to determine the most valuable skills -How to deliberately practice those valuable skills skills -Why not having one true passion takes the pressure off your career choice -The difference between the craftsman mindset and the passion mindset -How to leverage career capital (transmute success in one area to another) -How to get the right feedback to rapidly improve -What are the minimum qualifications Cal suggests using to choosing a career Mentioned in this episode: CalNewport.com So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love Support the Art of Adventure! It was a privilege to be one of the rare interviews that Cal Newport does. He doesn't do social media so that he can focus on his work. His idea about work totally make sense to me and I will definitely be focusing on cultivating my rare and valuable skills. Well, do you want to introduce yourself real quickly since you haven’t been on the show? ISAAC: Sure. I am the author of NPM and I’ve been maintaining Node for the last -- Jesus! It’s been almost a year and a half now, a year or so. CHUCK: So just a couple small projects that nobody’s heard of, right? [Laughter] ISAAC: Yeah, a handful of little things on GitHub. CHUCK: Is there anything else we have to know about you? ISAAC: I enjoy changing my Twitter avatar to things that are funny or disturbing or preferably both. [Laughter] ISAAC: And, I don’t know. CHUCK: Alright. Well, we really appreciate you coming on the show. AJ: That is pretty disturbing dude. You’ve got your face on a really overweight cat.
