How better to ring in the start of the holiday season than with two of my favorite music film obsessives, musician Chaki (The Funk Wizard) & comedy writer/artist/filmmaker Rachel Lichtman of Programme 4, who brought to my attention the 1970 TV spectacular The 5th Dimension Special: An Odyssey In The Cosmic Universe Of Peter Max.We discuss how this special got on Rachel's radar, Chaki seeing a restored version of this in a theater with the members of The 5th Dimension in atttendance, what's the story behind The Glass Industries sponsorship of this special and how they created a ‘real band,' The Glass Bottle, the PBS ‘fake band' Mulligan Stew, what it was like being a groovy extra in tv/movies during the hippie days, hippies in advertising, Dickie Goodman of Mr. Shark fame writing the music for The Glass Bottle, Rachel's The 5th Dimension crime show on Programme 4, Dionne Warwick, the obsession within The 5th Dimension to get their vocal harmonies absolutely right, Marilyn McCoo & Solid Gold, the Bee Gee's Idea TV Special, the steady hand of director John Moffitt (who also directed Mr. Show episodes), how the special was shot in studio 8H in NYC and not in Burbank, Peter Max's brand of psychedelic art--where art and commerce meet, the weird vibe of Peter Max's acting in this special, how the Laugh-In writers did not hit the psychedelic needs of this special, Artie Johnson's problematic and offensive comedy characters in this special, Glen Campbell and Flip Wilson's much needed energetic turns in this special, the song and the performance of 'Puppet Man', why the children in this special freak us out, the haunting littering commercials made for this special, Chris's first time seeing the musical Hair, the legendary arrangement of 'Aquarius' banging into 'Let The Sun Shine In. Also, Rachel gives a massive update regarding the future of Programme 4, and Chaki hints at his new collaboration with El Vez entitled “Fuck Ice”. AP correspondent Donna Warder reports on a toilet that's up for auction November 18, with a $10 million starting price.
To honor his memory we are rereleasing episode 93 featuring former NFL Pro Bowler, Nick Mangold who joined us to talk barbecue and football. On the same episode we had former MLB pitcher, Jerry Reuss who pitched in the Major Leagues for 22 years. Nick Mangold played center in the National Football League for 11 years as a member of the New York Jets, was a seven time Pro Bowl selection and considered by many to be one of the best at his position. He also makes one heck of a BBQ sauce and is determined to have his sauce take its place among the finest and most well known names on store shelves everywhere. The passion with which he played football is the same passion he gives Seventy Four BBQ (74 BBQ), which are the line-up of sauces he is rolling out. We had fun speaking with Nick regarding his playing career and how he transformed from a home kitchen sauce maker into a sauce king who is managing to make others take notice as he puts out a superb tasting product. What does family planning and a beard have to do with 74 BBQ? Listen and you will find out. Jerry Reuss pitched for 22 years in the Major Leagues, finishing his career with 220 wins and a World Series Championship as a member of the 1981 Los Angeles Dodgers. Along the way, he pitched a no-hitter, amassed 1,907 strikeouts, a 3.64 ERA, and was a two-time All Star. He is the author of the book, Bring in the Right Hander, a well-known prankster, and appeared with some of his 1981 World Serious Champion Dodgers on the television show, Solid Gold as they sang “We are the Champions.” 22 years in the Major Leagues does not go by without having a few stories, and we were glad to listen to as many as Jerry would tell We recommend you go to Rogue Cookers website, https://roguecookers.com/ for award-winning rubs, Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, Cutting Edge Firewood High Quality Kiln Dried Firewood - Cutting Edge Firewood in Atlanta for high quality firewood and cooking wood, Mantis BBQ, https://mantisbbq.com/ to purchase their outstanding sauces with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Kidney Project, and for exceptional sauces, Elda's Kitchen https://eldaskitchen.com/ We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe. 00:46 How hot can solid gold get?A new study suggests that gold can be superheated far beyond its melting point without it becoming a liquid. Using an intense burst from a laser, a team heated a gold foil to 14 times its melting point, far beyond a theoretical limit put forward in previous studies. The team suggest that the speed at which they heated the gold allowed them to shoot past this limit, but there is scepticism about whether the team actually achieved the level of heating they report.Research Article: White et al.News and Views: Solid gold superheated to 14 times its melting temperature10:05 Research HighlightsHow island life led to huge wingspans for flying foxes, and how a sugary diet ‘rewires' a mouse's brain.Research Highlight: How the world's biggest bats got their enormous wingspansResearch Highlight: How sugar overload in early life affects the brain later12:30 Researchers warn about the threat of nuclear warWith increasing political polarisation and more nuclear-armed nations, researchers are warning about the threat of nuclear war. Nile Rogers of Chic Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson This sit-down with my old friend, multiple Grammy Winner, Rock & Roll Hall Inductee, Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee, composer, producer, arranger, and guitarist, Nile Rogers, is SOLID GOLD… more like triple platinum. Even though we never exchanged more than a few words in the handful of times he graced my jams back in the day, there was always DHM (deep hidden meaning), as there always is with Nile. This day, we got to that and so much more. STORIES! Oh my lord, No one tells ‘em like Nile. Case in point, his tome, Le Freak, may be the greatest memoir I've read. I could not put the thing down. When was the last time I read a book cover to cover in less than 24 hours? A rare score on Amazon these days, Nile's assured he'll be updating and republishing. It's a MUST-read for music fans, flower children, and anyone who loves to sink their teeth into a great story, well-told. Nile covered his very humble early days, his barely older than him mother, the drugs, the bi-coastal extended family, the moves, the schools, early influences from Coltrane to The Beatles, flute to clarinet to guitar… how Bernard Edwards got him to the Hitmaker Strat and chucking, which has become synonymous with Nile's style. We talked the DHM, the breakdown, the Chic magic as well as the music during and since… producing the top of the top for Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Madonna, David Bowie, Duran Duran, still winning Grammys and kicking it with Daft Punk, Beyonce, and Cold Play, to name but a few, 750 MILLION albums worth. Say what? We got the sweetest stories about Michael Jackson… a funny with Keith Richards, a Grace Jones impression, and a scary story about Nile's coke psychosis leading to him bottoming out and getting clean and sober. 31 years worth and counting… That Nile was able to do all that he's done, and it's Herculean - aside from the massive number of hits, the films he's scored, the shows he's played, there's the We Are Family Foundation, Chairing the Songwriters Hall of Fame, receiving the 2024 World Economic Forum's Crystal Award for his extraordinary efforts to make the world a more peaceful, equal, and inclusive place… Nile is a humanist, a gentle soul with a heart of platinum like the records that line his walls. I've always admired, respected, and adored Nile. After reading Le Freak, and spending this time with him, I cherish him all the more. What a man, what a man, what a mighty fine man! Book Vs. Movie: ScroogedThe Charles Dickens Classic Vs. the 1988 FilmAfter ten years of producing special holiday episodes in December, the Margos discovered that there are numerous versions of Charles Dickens's *A Christmas Carol*. Everyone from the Fonz to Susan Lucci to Sir Patrick Stewart has portrayed Ebenezer Scrooge in some adaptation. So, why not select one version each season to explore and celebrate? This week, we're focusing on the 1988 film *Scrooged*, featuring Bill Murray and Robert Donner. This version is a complex classic, notable for its high levels of cynicism but it still makes us laugh!
