When Andrea Dettore-Murphy first moved to Rankin County, Mississippi, she didn't believe the stories she heard about how brutal the sheriff's department could be when pursuing suspected drug crimes. But in 2018, she learned the hard way that the rumors were true when a group of sheriff's deputies raided the home of her friend Rick Loveday and beat him relentlessly while she watched. A few years later, Dettore-Murphy says deputies put her through another haunting incident with her friend Robert Grozier. Dettore-Murphy was just the latest in a long line of people who said they witnessed or experienced torture by a small group of deputies, some of whom called themselves the “Goon Squad.” For nearly two decades, the deputies roamed Rankin County at night, beating, tasing, and choking suspects in drug crimes until they admitted to buying or selling illegal substances. Their reign of terror continued unabated until 2023, when the deputies were finally exposed.“Rankin County has always been notorious,” says Garry Curro, one the Goon Squad's many alleged victims. “They don't follow the laws of the land. They make their own laws.”This week on Reveal, reporters Brian Howey and Nate Rosenfield with Mississippi Today and the New York Times investigate the Goon Squad, whose members have allegedly tortured at least 22 people since the early 2000s.  Support Reveal's journalism at Revealnews.org/donatenow Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to get the scoop on new episodes at Revealnews.org/newsletter Connect with us onBluesky, Facebook and Instagram Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

Leading a law enforcement agency is no easy task — especially in today's challenging climate. But Sheriff Leon Lott of Richland County, South Carolina, has cracked the code. Now in his eighth term, Lott oversees nearly 900 personnel with an annual budget of $48 million. His leadership has earned him national recognition — and built a department where officers stay, without the recruitment struggles plaguing other agencies. In this episode of the Policing Matters podcast, host Jim Dudley sits down with Sheriff Lott to discuss the leadership strategies that keep his agency thriving, the key to officer retention, and why he believes the term “peace officer” better reflects modern policing. Sheriff Lott also shares insights from his international work, including training security forces in Iraq and his role in global crime prevention efforts through Crime Stoppers. Richland County is also one of the agencies featured on “On Patrol: Live,” a reality show that gives viewers a firsthand look at law enforcement in action. Epstein Rewind: The FDLE Finds No Wrong Doing In How Epstein's Case Was Handled In Florida

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) investigation into the handling of Jeffrey Epstein's 2006–2008 criminal case in Florida was a textbook example of institutional failure and systemic favoritism toward the wealthy and well-connected. Despite overwhelming evidence that the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) blatantly violated its own policies, allowing Epstein to live in luxury while supposedly incarcerated, the FDLE ultimately failed to hold anyone accountable. The report confirmed that Epstein was granted work release privileges he never should have received, spending his supposed jail sentence in an unmonitored office for up to 12 hours a day, six days a week, where he allegedly continued his criminal activities with zero oversight. Deputies reportedly acted as his personal chauffeurs rather than law enforcement officers, underscoring the extent to which the justice system bent over backward for him. Yet, despite uncovering these gross violations, the FDLE chose not to pursue criminal charges, reinforcing the idea that powerful individuals remain untouchable. The investigation's conclusion—that there was no evidence of criminal wrongdoing, only procedural failures—was an insult to public intelligence. The FDLE effectively rubber-stamped the corruption within PBSO, whitewashing what amounted to a de facto cover-up of Epstein's crimes. The decision not to pursue charges against those who facilitated his special treatment reeks of complicity, especially when considering the broader context of Epstein's infamously lenient 2008 plea deal, orchestrated by the DOJ. By refusing to hold anyone accountable, the FDLE ensured that the cycle of elite protectionism remained unbroken, sending a clear message: if you're rich and powerful, the system will always find a way to shield you, no matter how heinous your crimes.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Boone*, the court reversed a lower court's decision granting Abby Boone equitable caregiver status over Michelle Dias’s child, ruling the law didn’t apply as Boone’s relationship with the child predated the law. A defendant from the Sunshine State faces a near two-decade incarceration for slaying his grandfather. On Monday, 24-year-old Joshua Nareau pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in the death of his grandfather, 71-year-old James S. Khoury. Circuit Judge Shannon H. McFee sentenced Nareau to 246 years in prison, which works out to 20 1/2 years, with credit for time served, court records show. At his grandfather's funeral, Nareau spoke as if he wasn't the one responsible for his grandfather's death. He took the microphone at the podium and took a deep breath. “Jim, I called him Grampy, by blood he was my grandfather, as a person he was my father. He helped raise me. He made me the person I am today,” he said to the crowd of mourners. “You are all here because you knew and loved my grandfather and I thank you so much for that. My goal in life is to be as good as this man was. He helped everyone in this room in some way and I know that.” Khoury was a beloved deacon at the First Baptist Church of North Port. On Dec. 28, 2023 at 5 a.m., Khoury's wife called 911 to say her husband had been shot. Deputies arrived to find Khoury in front of his home, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He had a gun holstered to his hip. His lunch box lay next to him. Paramedics arrived and pronounced Khoury dead. While deputies searched the scene, they saw Nareau sitting in the grass beside the home. Nareau told deputies his grandmother called him after the shooting and he rushed from his home which is a few hundred yards away, according to a probable cause arrest affidavit. Khoury's wife in an interview with detectives said she gave her husband a kiss before he walked out the door. Seconds after he walked outside, she heard a gunshot and her husband called out for her. She ran out and heard him fall. She saw a gunshot wound to his chest and “knew he was dead,” the affidavit said. Fearing for her safety, she rushed back inside and called 911. She mentioned to deputies her husband told her the day before that he heard a gunshot while driving to work but did not notice anything else out of the ordinary. She said she called Nareau after the shooting. Nareau told deputies he was in bed when his grandmother called him and he quickly dressed and ran over. He also said she told him there may be a sniper outside. Detectives noted in the affidavit that Khoury's wife never mentioned anything about a sniper. He also allegedly said he did not hear any shots or see anyone else in the area. Investigators later found a projectile in a large pine tree which suggested the shooter was on the south side of the home. It's also the location where Nareau would have come from to get to his grandparents' house, deputies said. A download of Nareau's phone showed his grandma had indeed called him after the shooting. But data also showed that he had walked several hundred meters around the time of the shooting, which is roughly the distance to his grandparent's residence and back, the affidavit said. The activity occurred when he told deputies he had been in bed and before his grandma called him. Detectives confronted Nareau about this, but he again claimed he was in bed and “didn't know” why the cellphone data would say otherwise, according to the affidavit. An analysis of the projectile found in the tree showed it could have come from a “Savage” bolt-action rifle that Nareau owns. On Feb. 14, the lab results confirmed the projectile came from Nareau's rifle, the affidavit said. Detectives did not give a motive for the shooting. “I am glad to finally be able to bring an update to you on this terrible incident. As you can see, even though we were not able to share much with you, my detectives and forensics team did a great job and we had a direction for the investigation and ultimately got the person responsible,” Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said in a statement. “This does not make it any easier for the family of the victim, who now have even more grief to cope with, but I hope it brings peace of mind to the community once more. Please pray for Mr. Khoury's family as they navigate this unthinkable situation.” Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? On January 12, 1983, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department received a call from a frantic driver who reported they'd just witnessed a shooting on the side of the side of the road in Fulton, California and the shooters had fled the scene a pickup truck. Deputies quickly located the truck and were led on a forty-five minute high-speed chase through Sonoma and Napa counties before finally being apprehended and identified as Michael and Suzan Carson. The Carsons were held on a charge of murdering the truck's original owner, Jon Charles Hellyar, but they refused to say a word to police. In time, however, Michael and Suzan Carson began to talk and eventually held a press conference during which they revealed a great deal about themselves and even went so far as to make ambiguous confessions to other recent murders in Northern California. In the months that followed their arrest, Michael and Suzan Carson reveled in their notoriety and the media attention their statements captured. In addition to the murder of Hellyar, they would also be convicted of two other murders, claiming themselves to be Muslim warriors on a mission to rid the world of witches and other practitioners of dark magic, earning them the nickname “The San Francisco Witch Killers.”Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1983. Wisconsin Man Sentenced to 37 Years for Drunk Driving Crash That Killed Four Siblings

A 48-year-old Wisconsin man, Scott Farmer, was sentenced to 37 and a half years in prison after his fifth drunk driving conviction led to a crash that killed four siblings. Waupaca County Judge Raymond Huber handed down the sentence on Friday, granting Farmer 342 days of credit for time already served, according to court records. The fatal incident occurred on December 16, 2023, when Farmer drove westbound in the eastbound lane of Highway 10 in Weyauwega. His vehicle collided head-on with a car carrying Daniel Gonzalez, 25; Fabian Gonzalez, 23; and their sisters, Lilian Gonzalez, 14, and Daniela Gonzalez, 9. All four siblings died at the scene. Emergency responders found a large bottle of vodka inside Farmer's truck. During the sentencing, prosecutors presented recordings of jailhouse calls between Farmer and his wife that contradicted his courtroom remorse. While Farmer told the court he wished he had died in the crash and prayed daily for the victims, the calls revealed a different sentiment. Farmer accused the victims' stepfather of running a sex trafficking ring out of his church. His wife reportedly said, "God was working through Scott" on the day of the crash. They also suggested that immigration checks should be conducted at the courtroom door, noting that many of the victims' family members are from Ecuador. Judge Huber condemned the comments as "outrageous" and "offensive to the court." The victims' mother, Paulina Schilling, shared her anguish during the proceedings. "A few days went by, and I had to go see them at the funeral parlor, which was the most heartbreaking day of my life," she said through a translator. "No one can imagine how I felt seeing all of them lifeless on a cot." In August, Farmer pleaded no contest to four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and one count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated for the fifth time. As part of a plea deal, one other criminal count and four pending traffic citations were dismissed. He was initially arrested on multiple charges, including operating with a revoked license, possessing open intoxicants in a vehicle, reckless driving, and driving the wrong way on a divided highway. According to the criminal complaint, Farmer initially told officers after the crash, "I just spun out" and denied hitting anyone. He became belligerent toward firefighters and attempted to fight hospital staff. Eventually, he admitted to having had "a lot" to drink. Deputies noted that Farmer exhibited signs of severe intoxication, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and difficulty maintaining balance. A blood test revealed his blood alcohol content was .346—more than four times the legal limit of .08 for regular drivers in Wisconsin. Due to his prior convictions, Farmer's legal limit was reduced to .02. Farmer's history of drunk driving spans several decades, with convictions in 1999, 2001, 2006, and 2019.   Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Last week in Charlotte County Florida, dispatch received a call about a disturbance just outside of Punta Gorda. Deputies arrived and made contact with owner of the property, Elroy Clark. Clark said one of his tenants was acting erratically. During the investigation, deputies were told that Clark may have had a warrant and asked dispatch to confirm it, and it was. More deputies were called to assist. They attempted to detain Clark, but he resisted. He became agitated and non compliant to verbal commands. Tasers, batons and OC were deployed to little effect. Deputies attempted to tackle, subdue and restrain Clark unsuccessfully. Less lethal munitions-- bean bag rounds-- were deployed, and finally Clark charged a deputy, who used his service weapon. Clark was struck, and aid was rendered by deputies until EMS arrived, however Clark was died at the scene. Former police officer Eric Tansey will take you through this use of force, using his experience with excited delirium and suspects resisting arrest to inform you the police officer's opinion on these events.
