Florida Mom, Rachiel Moore Gets Life Without Parole for Hiring Ex-Stepdad to Take Out Father In Custody Battle A 27-year-old Florida mother will die in prison for orchestrating the murder of her 4-year-old daughter's father—an ambush carried out in front of the child only hours after a judge granted the victim shared custody. On Thursday, Santa Rosa Circuit Judge Clifton Drake sentenced Rachiel Moore to life without the possibility of parole for the March 2023 slaying of 24-year-old Colby Vinson. A jury had convicted Moore of first-degree murder and evidence tampering, finding she enlisted her former stepfather, 55-year-old Jason Curtis, to pull the trigger. Curtis was convicted of the same murder in May and also received life without parole. Prosecutors said phone and social-media records showed Moore and Curtis traded messages “all week” plotting the hit. Moore wired gas money and provided Vinson's home and work addresses, physical description, and daily routine so Curtis—nicknamed “Booger”—could identify and kill him. Deputies were dispatched just after 10 p.m. on March 19 to an apartment complex on Navarre Parkway, about 170 miles west of Tallahassee. They found Vinson on his back outside his doorway, shot once in the face, as his preschool-aged daughter stood beside his body unharmed. Moore's godmother told detectives the shooting came the very night Vinson first exercised overnight visitation in nearly a year. Hours earlier, a family-court judge had awarded him split custody after a contentious legal fight with Moore. When investigators questioned Moore, she admitted venting to Curtis about the ruling. She said Curtis responded by sending Facebook Messenger photos of guns and knives. Moore thanked him “for making her feel better” and then deleted the app, later claiming she had not believed Curtis would act on his threats. According to the probable-cause affidavit, Curtis phoned Moore around 10 p.m. on the night of the murder and told her, “You don't have to worry about it—everything is fine. I have to put my a-- in the wind.” Moore described his tone as “excited” and promised to reimburse him $50 for gas. License-plate readers and cellphone data placed Curtis's vehicle on a northbound route to Alabama, where state troopers arrested him the next day. Inside the car, officers recovered a handgun believed to be the murder weapon and a handwritten note listing Vinson's appearance and both residential and workplace addresses. During trial, jurors heard that Moore deleted messages, removed apps from her phone, and asked acquaintances to lie about her whereabouts in an effort to hide her involvement. The tampering conviction stems from those attempts to erase digital evidence. After Thursday's sentencing, State Attorney Ginger Bowden Madden praised local, state, and federal agencies that “worked seamlessly to secure justice for Colby Vinson and his daughter, who witnessed an unimaginable crime.” Moore showed little emotion as she was led from the courtroom in shackles. She offered no apology to Vinson's family, who filled several rows wearing blue ribbons in the victim's memory. Curtis remains in a Florida state prison; Moore will soon join him, both without any chance of release. Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? One of The Deputies Was Murdered, It's Still Open and Unsolved. Maybe You Can Help? Nearly two decades have passed, but the haunting memory of one tragic night still lingers deeply within California's law enforcement community. One of the deputies from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office was murdered in the line of duty, and to this day, the case remains unsolved. The Sheriff's Department, along with dedicated detectives and the broader public safety network, continue to seek justice for Deputy Jeffrey Mitchell, whose life was taken far too soon. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium and most all social media platforms “It's not just a case. It's a human life. A husband, a father, a son. And it's still open,” said Dr. Michael Goold, a retired Chief of Police and advocate for emotional resilience in public safety. “We owe it to him and his family to keep pressing forward.” The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on our website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms A Tragic Night in Sacramento County On the early morning of Friday, October 27, 2006, Deputy Mitchell was patrolling a rural area. Around 3:30 a.m., he radioed dispatch to report he was stopping a white Chevrolet van. Minutes later, when dispatch tried to check back, there was silence. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Newsbreak and Blogspot. By the time responding units arrived at the scene, they found Deputy Mitchell shot in the head, with his own service weapon. Evidence showed he fought desperately for his life before the fatal blow. The Sheriff's Department and other law enforcement agencies across California launched an immediate and expansive search involving hundreds of officers, but the person responsible has never been found. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms One of The Deputies Was Murdered, It's Still Open and Unsolved. Maybe You Can Help? “There was always a question, was it murder or suicide? But looking at the evidence, the struggle, the scene, it's clear this was a violent homicide,” said Dr. Goold, who has discussed the case in the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast available for free on their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other platforms. Remembering Deputy Mitchell Deputy Jeffrey Mitchell had served with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department for nine years. He left behind a devoted wife and a six-year-old son. His murder not only shook his department but also left a permanent scar on the community he swore to protect. The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. “Every year, every day, we still think about Jeff,” one colleague posted on Facebook. Tributes continue to pour in on platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and X (formerly Twitter), keeping his memory alive and reminding the public that justice has yet to be served. The Emotional Toll and the Role of Intelligence Dr. Goold, who spent 23 years in law enforcement, now works to improve resilience and mental health among first responders. He often speaks about Emotional Intelligence (EI), a critical skill that enhances performance and decision-making under stress. Check out the show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms “High emotional intelligence is not just helpful, it's essential,” he explains. “When a deputy is alone on a dark road in a high-stakes situation, their ability to regulate emotion and think clearly can mean the difference between life and death.” EI encompasses five key components: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. In high-stress roles like policing, firefighting, or emergency response, being able to read the emotions of others and manage your own is a superpower. “EI helps officers understand what's really happening in emotionally charged scenarios,” Dr. Goold said. “It allows for better decision-making, fosters teamwork, and builds public trust, which is essential, especially when asking for help on cases like Deputy Mitchell's.” For more insights, the free episode of the “Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast”, is available on their website for free in addition to Apple Podcasts and Spotify, as well as through other podcast platforms. The Podcast Conversation, One of The Deputies Was Murdered, It's Still Open and Unsolved. Maybe You Can Help? In his ongoing efforts to bring awareness to this unresolved case, Dr. Goold continues to speak about Deputy Mitchell's story on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast series free on their website and streaming across Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other platforms. These conversations not only highlight the case but explore the broader impacts of trauma, stress, and the psychological demands placed on public safety personnel. Listeners from all backgrounds, including those in law enforcement and the general public are encouraged to tune in and share the free podcast via Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or X. Justice Still Demanded Despite the years, the mission remains the same: Find the person responsible. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office has never stopped investigating. Detectives still pursue leads and are urging anyone with information to come forward. “We can't close this chapter without accountability,” said one deputy currently assigned to cold cases. “This wasn't just one of the deputies he was one of our best. We won't stop.” One of The Deputies Was Murdered, It's Still Open and Unsolved. Maybe You Can Help? As Dr. Goold puts it: “It's about justice. It's about closure. But more than that, it's about never forgetting the human cost of service.” To learn more about Deputy Mitchell's story and the ongoing investigation, follow the conversation on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast social media and listen to the interview with Dr. Goold's as a free podcast on their website, Apple podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Archive on 4 is available on BBC Sounds featuring previously unheard tapes of Kenneth Williams reading Bible stories. They were recorded by a young James Jones, now the retired Bishop of Liverpool when he was a young producer working for a Christian charity, charged with getting new recordings that would bring new audiences to Christianity. The tapes explore Williams's talent in bringing these well-known stories to life and 'open a window into his soul', exploring his own relationship with faith through the people who knew him. Edward Stourton discusses Kenneth Williams' faith with Mark Oakley who is the dean of Southwark Cathedral, and James Jones, the former bishop of Liverpool. Also on the programme; the founder of the first secure school for young offenders with a faith ethos, says the spiritual health of teenagers needs addressing. Steve Chalke says schools in his Oasis group use an holistic approach to address bad behaviour. According to a new Teacher Tapp survey commissioned by the BBC, more than a third of secondary school teachers say they've seen misogynistic behaviour from a pupil in their school in the last week. But while Steve Chalke argues that a faith ethos in a school can help, are some religious beliefs part of the problem? As Israel continues its bombardment of Gaza, six UN aid agencies have this week appealed for a ceasefire and the resumption of urgently needed aid deliveries. When Andrea Dettore-Murphy first moved to Rankin County, Mississippi, she didn't believe the stories she heard about how brutal the sheriff's department could be when pursuing suspected drug crimes. But in 2018, she learned the hard way that the rumors were true when a group of sheriff's deputies raided the home of her friend Rick Loveday and beat him relentlessly while she watched. A few years later, Dettore-Murphy says deputies put her through another haunting incident with her friend Robert Grozier. Dettore-Murphy was just the latest in a long line of people who said they witnessed or experienced torture by a small group of deputies, some of whom called themselves the “Goon Squad.” For nearly two decades, the deputies roamed Rankin County at night, beating, tasing, and choking suspects in drug crimes until they admitted to buying or selling illegal substances. Their reign of terror continued unabated until 2023, when the deputies were finally exposed.“Rankin County has always been notorious,” says Garry Curro, one the Goon Squad's many alleged victims. “They don't follow the laws of the land. They make their own laws.”This week on Reveal, reporters Brian Howey and Nate Rosenfield with Mississippi Today and the New York Times investigate the Goon Squad, whose members have allegedly tortured at least 22 people since the early 2000s. Leading a law enforcement agency is no easy task — especially in today's challenging climate. But Sheriff Leon Lott of Richland County, South Carolina, has cracked the code. Now in his eighth term, Lott oversees nearly 900 personnel with an annual budget of $48 million. His leadership has earned him national recognition — and built a department where officers stay, without the recruitment struggles plaguing other agencies. In this episode of the Policing Matters podcast, host Jim Dudley sits down with Sheriff Lott to discuss the leadership strategies that keep his agency thriving, the key to officer retention, and why he believes the term “peace officer” better reflects modern policing. Sheriff Lott also shares insights from his international work, including training security forces in Iraq and his role in global crime prevention efforts through Crime Stoppers. Richland County is also one of the agencies featured on “On Patrol: Live,” a reality show that gives viewers a firsthand look at law enforcement in action. Sheriff Lott discusses how the show has impacted recruitment and community relations. About our sponsor This episode of the Policing Matters podcast is sponsored by OfficerStore. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) investigation into the handling of Jeffrey Epstein's 2006–2008 criminal case in Florida was a textbook example of institutional failure and systemic favoritism toward the wealthy and well-connected. Despite overwhelming evidence that the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) blatantly violated its own policies, allowing Epstein to live in luxury while supposedly incarcerated, the FDLE ultimately failed to hold anyone accountable. The report confirmed that Epstein was granted work release privileges he never should have received, spending his supposed jail sentence in an unmonitored office for up to 12 hours a day, six days a week, where he allegedly continued his criminal activities with zero oversight. Deputies reportedly acted as his personal chauffeurs rather than law enforcement officers, underscoring the extent to which the justice system bent over backward for him. Yet, despite uncovering these gross violations, the FDLE chose not to pursue criminal charges, reinforcing the idea that powerful individuals remain untouchable. The investigation's conclusion—that there was no evidence of criminal wrongdoing, only procedural failures—was an insult to public intelligence. The FDLE effectively rubber-stamped the corruption within PBSO, whitewashing what amounted to a de facto cover-up of Epstein's crimes. The decision not to pursue charges against those who facilitated his special treatment reeks of complicity, especially when considering the broader context of Epstein's infamously lenient 2008 plea deal, orchestrated by the DOJ. By refusing to hold anyone accountable, the FDLE ensured that the cycle of elite protectionism remained unbroken, sending a clear message: if you're rich and powerful, the system will always find a way to shield you, no matter how heinous your crimes.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

In *Dias v. Boone*, the court reversed a lower court's decision granting Abby Boone equitable caregiver status over Michelle Dias’s child, ruling the law didn’t apply as Boone’s relationship with the child predated the law. While the justices questioned the law’s constitutionality regarding parental rights, they did not strike it down, instead issuing a narrow ruling specific to this case. A defendant from the Sunshine State faces a near two-decade incarceration for slaying his grandfather. On Monday, 24-year-old Joshua Nareau pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in the death of his grandfather, 71-year-old James S. Khoury. Circuit Judge Shannon H. McFee sentenced Nareau to 246 years in prison, which works out to 20 1/2 years, with credit for time served, court records show. At his grandfather's funeral, Nareau spoke as if he wasn't the one responsible for his grandfather's death. He took the microphone at the podium and took a deep breath. “Jim, I called him Grampy, by blood he was my grandfather, as a person he was my father. He helped raise me. He made me the person I am today,” he said to the crowd of mourners. “You are all here because you knew and loved my grandfather and I thank you so much for that. My goal in life is to be as good as this man was. He helped everyone in this room in some way and I know that.” Khoury was a beloved deacon at the First Baptist Church of North Port. On Dec. 28, 2023 at 5 a.m., Khoury's wife called 911 to say her husband had been shot. Deputies arrived to find Khoury in front of his home, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He had a gun holstered to his hip. His lunch box lay next to him. Paramedics arrived and pronounced Khoury dead. While deputies searched the scene, they saw Nareau sitting in the grass beside the home. Nareau told deputies his grandmother called him after the shooting and he rushed from his home which is a few hundred yards away, according to a probable cause arrest affidavit. Khoury's wife in an interview with detectives said she gave her husband a kiss before he walked out the door. Seconds after he walked outside, she heard a gunshot and her husband called out for her. She ran out and heard him fall. She saw a gunshot wound to his chest and “knew he was dead,” the affidavit said. Fearing for her safety, she rushed back inside and called 911. She mentioned to deputies her husband told her the day before that he heard a gunshot while driving to work but did not notice anything else out of the ordinary. She said she called Nareau after the shooting. Nareau told deputies he was in bed when his grandmother called him and he quickly dressed and ran over. He also said she told him there may be a sniper outside. Detectives noted in the affidavit that Khoury's wife never mentioned anything about a sniper. He also allegedly said he did not hear any shots or see anyone else in the area. Investigators later found a projectile in a large pine tree which suggested the shooter was on the south side of the home. It's also the location where Nareau would have come from to get to his grandparents' house, deputies said. A download of Nareau's phone showed his grandma had indeed called him after the shooting. But data also showed that he had walked several hundred meters around the time of the shooting, which is roughly the distance to his grandparent's residence and back, the affidavit said. The activity occurred when he told deputies he had been in bed and before his grandma called him. Detectives confronted Nareau about this, but he again claimed he was in bed and “didn't know” why the cellphone data would say otherwise, according to the affidavit. An analysis of the projectile found in the tree showed it could have come from a “Savage” bolt-action rifle that Nareau owns. On Feb. 14, the lab results confirmed the projectile came from Nareau's rifle, the affidavit said. Detectives did not give a motive for the shooting. “I am glad to finally be able to bring an update to you on this terrible incident. As you can see, even though we were not able to share much with you, my detectives and forensics team did a great job and we had a direction for the investigation and ultimately got the person responsible,” Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said in a statement. “This does not make it any easier for the family of the victim, who now have even more grief to cope with, but I hope it brings peace of mind to the community once more. Please pray for Mr. Khoury's family as they navigate this unthinkable situation.” Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? On January 12, 1983, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department received a call from a frantic driver who reported they'd just witnessed a shooting on the side of the side of the road in Fulton, California and the shooters had fled the scene a pickup truck. Deputies quickly located the truck and were led on a forty-five minute high-speed chase through Sonoma and Napa counties before finally being apprehended and identified as Michael and Suzan Carson. The Carsons were held on a charge of murdering the truck's original owner, Jon Charles Hellyar, but they refused to say a word to police. In time, however, Michael and Suzan Carson began to talk and eventually held a press conference during which they revealed a great deal about themselves and even went so far as to make ambiguous confessions to other recent murders in Northern California. In the months that followed their arrest, Michael and Suzan Carson reveled in their notoriety and the media attention their statements captured. In addition to the murder of Hellyar, they would also be convicted of two other murders, claiming themselves to be Muslim warriors on a mission to rid the world of witches and other practitioners of dark magic, earning them the nickname “The San Francisco Witch Killers.”Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1983.
