The phone call that changed everything. Completely life altering. Devorah Mirsky, host of the podcast: Digging Deep with Dev, joined me in coversation, unravelling her story of the time when her Dad passed away suddently, in the throes of Covid. She describes her emotions during this time, as she reflects on what the funeral was like and the type of Shivah she experienced during lockdown. Devorah dives deep into her PTSD of daily life, even years after losing her Dad, and what we, as a society, can appreciate about what people go through. She also coined a phrase "they're in a better place condundrum", and gives us her perspective into our responses to others' pain. But more importantly, Devorah gives us a clear lens into who her Dad was. How he showed up, differently, lovingly, with unwavering support for her and her siblings. It's a lesson how we all can strive to be better parents and show up more present for our children. To reach Devorah directly, you can find her on Instagram or Facebook @Diggingdeepwithdev. We have a special guest this week, professional sport climber and coach, Dan Mirsky. Over a twenty plus year career, Dan has not only become one of the best climbers in the world, he's also become a highly sought after coach with a wealth of knowledge that transcends climbing and sport. But, that journey hasn't been linear. In today's call, Dan talks about a herniated disc injury in his lower lumbar spine and associated nerve pain that he sustained in 2019. The injury ultimately resulted in an open discectomy with laminectomy surgery and a challenging, year-long, non-linear recovery process that had him questioning if he'd ever climb at a high level again. Through our discussion, Dan talks about dealing with navigating uncertainty and shares the valuable insights that played an integral role in his ability to work through the injury and recovery process to achieve new heights in his climbing in the years post-op. Throughout the call, we touch on specific tools for navigating challenges, the importance of mindfulness and mastery, as well as balancing outcome and process oriented goals. Dan also takes us on a deep dive into coping with failure, recognizing symptoms of burnout and the steps he takes for dealing with those feelings and sensations in order to perpetuate his love and passion for climbing forward long-term. There are so many overlaps and takeaways from this conversation that apply to runners and endurance athletes, but even moreso, they transcend sport completely. I hope you enjoy this call! What's the value of being the ambassador for Overcoming MS? 15:03 Could you tell us a bit about your volunteer work with MS Canada? 19:37 If you were to give advice to yourself as a newly diagnosed person, what would that advice be? Selected Key Takeaways: The Overcoming MS Program empowers and informs people to make positive lifestyle changes 03:02 “[Professor] Jelinek's voice really spoke to me like I'm a relatively intelligent adult. It was the first time I heard ideas like ‘follow this very healthy evidence-based lifestyle program, and still take your DMT with your neurologist's guidance, if that's a good fit for you.' It was also the first time I felt like I had a say in my health, in my approach to my MS.” Grieving your former self can be an important step in making healthy changes 04:02 “I discovered the concept of grieving for the loss of my former self and finding the new me. That concept really resonated with me. In a lot of ways, I actually saw it as a really positive thing. Through that I embraced dietary, exercise and mindfulness initiatives fully. Through the process of discovering who this new me is, I made a lot of decisions to cut out toxic elements from my life, whether that's food and lifestyle related, people, or even something like social media. Overcoming MS was a major factor in helping all this.” Find the method that works for you to quit smoking 07:40 “I really struggled for about two years with smoking. Whereas [with] my drinking, getting that under control was actually almost easy and immediate in comparison. It feels like I tried everything to quit before I got a handle on it, which included things like tracking every time I smoked, and then trying to reduce the number of times each day, going cold turkey, reading about how horrible smoking is for your health, the scare tactics, etc. All those things. At the end of the day, I actually found Allen Carr's ‘Easy Way to Stop Smoking.' That book really worked for me.” Want to learn more about living a full and happy life with multiple sclerosis? As an ambassador with Overcoming MS, he facilitates the Greater Toronto Area online Circle support group. He is also a member of the Overcoming MS Communications Advisory Group. At MS Canada, he facilitates a support group for people who are newly diagnosed with the disease and gets to work with the charity's education team on webinars and events, too. Discovering Overcoming MS A major turning point in coming to terms with his diagnosis was discovering Overcoming MS. The program has helped him to change his perspective, offered him access to a community of others who can relate and has reinforced a positive outlook that he can always come back to for inspiration and hope.

Sharsheret, a national non-profit organization, improves the lives of Jewish women and families living with or at increased genetic risk for breast or ovarian cancer through personalized support and saves lives through educational outreach.   Sharsheret was founded in November 2001, four months after Rochelle Shoretz, a 28 year old young Jewish mother, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Immersed within a close-knit Jewish community in northern New Jersey, Rochelle had many offers to help with meals and to transport her sons to after-school programs.   What she really wanted, though, was to speak to another young mom who was going to have to explain to her children that she was going to lose her hair to chemotherapy, and what it would be like to prepare for the High Holidays knowing she was facing a life-threatening illness. Though her grandmother had died of the disease, cancer was a taboo subject still not discussed within her family and, she soon recognized, within the Jewish community at large.   In this episode, Yaakov speaks to Shlomo, Rochelle's eldest son, about his experiences and challenges with the cancer battle his mom fought. Elana Silber, a close friend of Rochelle & CEO of Sharsheret, joins in to help explain the origin story to the org and how they impacted so many people during the most fifilt time of their lives.   SPECIAL THANK YOU: Sara Tenenbaum for helping make this episode a reality.   You can help Sharsheret here: https://sharsheret.org/donate-now/   This episode is in memory of: • Shimon Dovid ben Yaakov Shloima • Miriam Sarah bas Yaakov Moshe • Rochel Leah bas Moshe   Our free call-in-to-listen feature is here: • USA: (712) 432-3489 • UK: 0333-366-0154 • ISRAEL: 079-579-5088   Follow us on social media for more content: • TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@livinglchaim • IG - https://www.instagram.com/livinglchaim/ • FB - https://www.facebook.com/livinglchaim • LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/living-lchaim • Website - https://www.livinglchaim.com/   Have a specific question? email us hi@livinglchaim.com WhatsApp us feedback and get first access to episodes: 914-222-5513 If you are interested in sponsoring an episode in memory or refuah shilama of a loved one, please send an email to hi@livinglchaim.com Lchaim.

If you’re listening to or have already listened to the beginning of this episode, you probably noticed that the voice introducing Kimberly Adams sounded a bit off, right? That’s because it’s an audio “deepfake,” and it was created by Yisroel Mirsky at the Offensive AI Research Lab through a process called voice cloning. It uses software to study a short sample of someone’s voice and create a deepfake, which in this case took only 15 seconds to generate, according to Mirsky. It’s far from a perfect replica, but it turns out that scammers recently started to use deepfake audio for phone scams and in some cases have even succeeded. Marketplace’s Kimberly Adams spoke with Kyle Alspach, a cybersecurity reporter with Protocol, about how the tech behind audio deepfakes works and how they’re being used in phone scams.

Avraham Yitzhaq Ha-Cohen Kook (1865-1935) stands as a colossal figure of modern Jewish history and thought. Jurist, mystic, poet, theologian, communal leader, founder of the modern Chief Rabbinate and still the defining thinker of Religious Zionism, he is indispensable for understanding modern Jewish thought, the contemporary State of Israel, and the most fundamental interactions of religion, nationalism, ethics and spirituality. Despite countless studies of him, almost no full-fledged intellectual biography of him exists in any language.  This study of the years before his momentous move to Jaffa in 1904, drawing on little-known works, including recently published manuscripts, begins to fill that gap. Towards the Mystical Experience of Modernity: The Making of Rav Kook, 1865-1904 (Academic Studies Press, 2021) traces his life and times in the remarkably intense Rabbinic intellectual milieu of late nineteenth-century Eastern Europe, and his path from a profound, regularly rationalist traditionalism, towards a dynamic theology and spiritual practice weaving together Kabbalah, philosophy, universal ethics, and romantic mysticism. Matthew Miller is a graduate of Yeshivat Yesodei HaTorah. He studied Jewish Studies and Linguistics at McGill for his BA and completed an MA in Hebrew Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London. A powerfully original thinker, Rav Kook combined strict traditionalism and an embrace of modernity, Orthodoxy and tolerance, piety and audacity, scholasticism and ecstasy, and passionate nationalism with profound universalism. Though little known in the English-speaking world, his life and teachings are essential to understanding current Israeli politics, contemporary Jewish spirituality, and modern Jewish thought. Rav Kook: Mystic in a Time of Revolution (Yale UP, 2014), the first biography of Kook in English in more than half a century, offers a rich and insightful portrait of the man and his complex legacy. Yehudah Mirsky clears away widespread misunderstandings of Kook's ideas and provides fresh insights into his personality and worldview. Mirsky demonstrates how Kook's richly erudite, dazzlingly poetic writings convey a breathtaking vision in which "the old will become new, and the new will become holy." Six months after the handover of Hong Kong from British rule, Index on Censorship published a special edition: Hong Kong Goes Back. In it various people predicted what the future might hold. Jonathan Mirsky, then East Asia editor of The Times, wrote on how freedom of expression began to crumble in Hong Kong in anticipation of the handover. He described how news channels reported on China in a “vapid or grovelling” manner, democratic politicians spoke of their colleagues no longer wanting to be associated with them and organisations were expected to plan celebrations for the handover. Mirsky predicted a dismal future where loyalty to Beijing would be an overriding expectation. Twenty-five years later his predictions have sadly been realised. The situation is grave, perhaps even worse than Mirksy's fears. Just how grave? Are there any freedoms left? And what can we, over in the UK, do to help? A panel of people who all once called Hong Kong home will share their thoughts and experiences. On the panel will be Benedict Rogers, the CEO of Hong Kong Watch, Hong Kong journalist Kris Cheng, Mark Clifford, President of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong, Evan Fowler, a writer and researcher on Hong Kong and China, and activist and author Nathan Law. The discussion will be chaired by Index on Censorship's current magazine editor, Jemimah Steinfeld, who has lived in China. This event is organised in partnership with the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong.

Zalma's Insurance Fraud Letter Volume 25, Number 20 https://zalma.com/blog Criminal Caused Suit on Policy to Drag on for More than Six Years Court Finally Stopped an Unconscionable Level of Overlitigation United States District Judge Gary R. Brown was faced with a legal dispute that, perhaps because the defendant was a criminal, went on for years without a final disposition. In Principal Life Insurance Company v. Jason P. Brand, No. CV 15-CV-3804, United States District Court, E.D. New York (September 29, 2021) the case was reduced to seven years on disputes that appeared to be relatively straightforward: defendant Brand obtained a disability policy in early 2012 from plaintiff Principal Life, after being less than forthcoming about his health history. In June 2014 – prior to the submission of Defendant's disability claim on November 14, 2014 – the New York State Attorney General's office raided Defendant's offices, seizing his computers and physical files, leading to indictment on October 16, 2014 of Defendant and his businesses, DASO Development Corp. and Narco Freedom, Inc., for insurance fraud in the first degree and grand larceny in the second degree, charges to which defendant would plead guilty. Defendant filed a disability claim based upon anxiety; Principal Life, for its part, acted quickly and rescinded the policy and Filed a declaratory relief action. Proactive Insurer Has to Fight to Renew Judgment Against Convicted Fraudster Insurer's $7,870,557.89 Judgment Against Fraudster Stands Insurer May Collect on Default Judgment Against Fraudster In People of The State of California, ex rel. Interinsurance Exchange of The Automobile Club of Southern California v. Alex Semyon Mirsky, B297321, California Court of Appeals, Second District, Seventh Division (September 21, 2021) Alex Semyon Mirsky appealed from the superior court's denial of a motion to vacate a 2013 renewal of a default judgment and the underlying default judgment. In 2003 the superior court entered a default judgment of over $7.8 million against Mirsky. Interinsurance Exchange of the Automobile Club of Southern California (Interinsurance Exchange) renewed the judgment in 2013, and in 2018 it mailed notice of the renewal to Mirsky at an address Interinsurance Exchange claimed was Mirsky's last known address. Mirsky filed a motion to vacate the renewal of judgment, or, in the alterative, vacate the default judgment under Code of Civil Procedure section 473, subdivision (d). The trial court denied the motion, concluding Mirsky's motion to vacate the renewal of judgment was untimely and Mirsky failed to meet his burden to show the default judgment was void. The guys tell Kendall what he's done well, they voice their complaints, and try to get to the bottom of if Kendall is embarrassed to work for them. Then they turn their sights on the Julio Jones trade. How big of a difference does Julio make for the Titans? How does Julios addition effect the Bills chances in the AFC? Y. N., Ma, K. H., Turmaine, M., Svaren, J., Gordon, T., Arthur-Farraj, P., Velasco-Aviles, S., Cabedo, H., Benito, C., Mirsky, R., Jessen, K. R. Abstract: After nerve injury, myelin and Remak Schwann cells reprogram to repair cells specialized for regeneration. Normally providing strong regenerative support, these cells fail in aging animals, and during chronic denervation that results from slow axon growth. This impairs axonal regeneration and causes significant clinical problems. In mice, we find that repair cells express reduced c-Jun protein as regenerative support provided by these cells declines during aging and chronic denervation. In both cases, genetically restoring Schwann cell c-Jun levels restores regeneration to control levels. We identify potential gene candidates mediating this effect and implicate Shh in the control of Schwann cell c-Jun levels. This establishes that a common mechanism, reduced c-Jun in Schwann cells, regulates success and failure of nerve repair both during aging and chronic denervation. This provides a molecular framework for addressing important clinical problems, suggesting molecular pathways that can be targeted to promote repair in the PNS. Josh and Dave share their personal journeys that led them to work together and eventually start their podcast. Josh, who is on the spectrum, talks about his past work history and how tough it was as an adult with ASD. Thankfully, he got a job working at Spectrum Designs where he met Dave who became his mentor and more importantly, his best friend. Josh and Dave have a contagious energy that is so fun! They also share their recent experience doing a ‘TEDx’ talk and how they learned so much during that process. We had a blast during our conversation and I’m so excited to welcome these guys on the show! Enjoy listening! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/megan-carranza/message

Can you remember when you were a little kid thinking about what you wanted to be when you grew up?  A doctor, lawyer, fireman/woman, whatever that might be. I even knew a boy when I was little who wanted to be a robber.  He is not a robber by the way now but isn’t it funny to look back at what you imagined and were so thrilled at the possibility of back then…   Are you still thrilled at possibilities in your life? Or do you get stuck sometimes like we all do?   My conversation with our guest this week will wake up your curiosity and child like wonder. He’s been leading 2 lives and up until the last few years, his other life was a  fun hobby and an outlet for releasing the stress of the day.    Come hang out with us and I promise you insights, laughs, and maybe even some new possibilities you want to explore in your life.  Kevin Mirsky is a Marin County native who grew up on the side of Mt. Tamalpais in an A-frame house. As a young boy he entertained himself by drawing, picking blackberries, and getting lost. Oh to get lost in the woods again like when I was little and imagine stories of who came before me and what were they doing and why.   Kevin shares his experience of real life experiences of fatherhood, being a businessman, husband, surfer, and how & why he birthed his creative talents as an illustrator publicly in his 40’s.  If you’re in a space of change in your life and wondering can this ever happen in your life, join our conversation. Come see what resonates for you, and what may serve you in making a change in your life you thought would need to wait for, you know, that “I’ll do that when” - because maybe you can have it all right now.   Kevin proclaims himself as the artistic version of “slow food” and his work has been described as wry, witty, somber, introspective, warm, clever, and charming.  I actually purchased my first Kevin Mirsky - I’ll show you the pic @camdenhoch so come check it out.  Join us, leave comments, and be sure to share with those other creators who may be holding back for that “some day” or need a little nudge to start now. It’s never too late to get creative.   In this episode: The story behind Kevin’s illustration business name, Single Fin Theory - what is it? How to get lost in your creative outlet a little bit each day if it’s not your main “bread winning” job. How to wonder as an adult. How to open up more to your creative self.     Resources: @The_Single_Fin_Theory    https://youtu.be/0hdwRZVd--w Amazing video for the Sawyer Supply Show created by professional surfer and incredible human, CJ Nelson    Teaser and video for the Neve & Hawk show https://readymag.com/neveandhawk/singlefintheory/2/   Wetsuits and t-shirts with OCN Culture https://www.ocnculture.com/products/t-shirt-tako-white

Robb Mirsky was working the checkout at a liquor store when David Craig showed up in his line wearing a Chester Brown t-shirt. The two bonded and Robb invited David to the next Toronto Comic Jam. Taking place the last Tuesday of every month, the jam happens in the back of the Cameron House bar where participants are expected to grab a page and finish the next panel of the night's various half-started comics. At the end of the night, the pages are collected and that month's issue is published. It was on one of those nights when Robb and David met James Spencer. The three vibe so well at the Jam they decide to recreate the magic with Read More Comix – a series of surrealist humour comics reminiscent of the underground comix of the 1960s by Robert Crumb, Spain Rodriguez, Kim Deitch and Trina Robbins. At Speech Bubble, the three talk about their individual styles and why they work so well together before promoting their latest sequential experiment, the bookmark sized Tiny Comix. About Dan Mirsky Dan Mirsky is an understated crusher. I’ve been watching him gracefully take down rock climbs all over the country for the last 10 years. In 2013, we witnessed his fitness (literally) in The Red when we were next door neighbors at Lago Linda’s. And then a few months later he was kind enough to show us around The Cathedral/Wailing Wall, giving Seth and me encyclopedic beta on the entire crag from the ground. He chucked a couple laps on Golden (14b) that day right after sending Route of All Evil (14a) in the Virgin River Gorge that morning. Mirsky is PSYCHED to climb and psyched to see others succeed. He’s a bright-eyed, happy, almost boyish guy with a sneaky sense of humor and a willingness to get a little crazy with friends. He knows everything about the places he climbs because he’s obsessed with all things climbing. He’s sent 30+ 5.14’s up to 5.14c, having taken down The Crew (14c), 50 Words for Pump (14b), Bad Girls Club (14c), Lungfish (14b), and lots of other hard stuff, including an FA of Solid Gold (14c), the direct line to Golden (read his “The Day I Sent Solid Gold” from EveningSends.com). Dan Mirsky Interview Details Last year, Dan did the Black Diamond Bootcamp with Joe Kinder and Sam Elias, and he experienced some serious gains on actual rock because of it. Because of that success and his newfound psych for training in a structured way, he took a job as a trainer in Salt Lake City at The Training Room at The Front. In this second interview with Dan Mirsky we talk about his BD Bootcamp success and the novel concept that is The Training Room. How the BD Bootcamp changed him Sending spree followed by plateau Started training other people The Training Room - what is it? Cardio habits now? Diet is super important to him Current projects and city life

About Dan Mirsky Dan Mirsky is an understated crusher. I've been watching him gracefully take down rock climbs in Rifle for as long as I've been climbing there. Last year we witnessed his fitness (literally) in The Red when we were next door neighbors at Lago Linda's last year. And then a few months later he was kind enough to show us around The Cathedral/Wailing Wall, giving Seth and me encyclopedic beta on the entire crag from the ground. He lives part time on the road and part time at his house in Carbondale. He dates my good friend and fellow TrainingBeta worker bee, Katy Dannenberg (you may have noticed her posting a bunch of awesome stuff on our Facebook page recently?), and together they are the hardest training couple I've ever known. If they're not climbing, they're doing CrossFit workouts outside of the Airstream, running half marathons, doing yoga, or hangboarding on their portable A-frame hangboard. So how does Dan Mirsky do it? He doesn't even live in a city with a climbing gym and yet he's consistently killing it. He'll tell you all about it in the interview. What We Talked About How he financially manages to live on the road for most of the year How he stays strong on long trips to the Red or other areas What he thinks doing cardio has done for his climbing How he stays super ripped and lean without starving himself (he eats - I've seen it myself) The wise advice he gave me about projecting Related Links A more complete bio on Dan Mirsky on Millet.com, one of his sponsors.
