We've all witnessed other people's children behaving as if they were king or queen of the hill. Sometimes it's even our own kids who are behaving abominably at Applebee's. But what exactly makes a kid "spoiled"? Conversely, what's the opposite of spoiled, and how do we raise those kids? We unpack this loaded term in this week's episode and talk about how our own experiences have shaped our opinions. In this episode, we discuss: · The history of the term “spoiled child” · Why spoiled children act out... and why it's usually in public · Boundary-seeking behavior and how to address it Here are links to some of the resources mentioned in the episode: Livia Gershon for JStor Daily: The Spoiled Child is Not a Modern Invention Jill Suttie for Greater Good Magazine: Taking on the Myth of the Spoiled Child Patrick A. This week we're talking with Bobbi Rebell, author of the new book Launching Financial Grownups: Live Your Richest Life by Helping Your (Almost) Adult Kids Become Everyday Money Smart. Bobbi is also the host of the "Money Tips for Financial Grownups" podcast. Money can be a difficult subject to broach with kids for a number of reasons. So how do we break the ice? And what is different about our children's relationship with money in the digital age than ours was when we were kids? There are actually ways to make conversations about money more fun and engaging than rigid and boring. (And no, you don't have to look up influencers or NFTs to be able to talk to your kid about financial topics that will interest them!) In this episode, Bobbi shows us how to: Engage our kids about money without talking down to them Tailor different financial conversations to different ages Use allowances to encourage financial freedom rather than maintain financial control Follow Bobbi on Social Media: https://www.bobbirebell.com/ Instagram @bobbirebell1 Twitter @bobbirebell Special thanks to this month's sponsors: Betabrand has reinvented comfort and style with their dress yoga pants, and we love ours! “God never gives you more than you can handle.” “Look on the bright side.” “It could be worse.” These are platitudes we've all heard and we all know are (to say the least) less than helpful. So why do so many of us feel a need to put a good spin on things when disaster strikes, and how do we break out of that habit? We talk about our own experiences with toxic positivity, what we've learned from them, and what we're still working on. In this episode, we discuss: · How overvaluing positives functions as a survival mechanism · Why toxic positivity actually makes us less happy · How to counter toxic positivity and how to stay graceful towards people who offer us outlooks we may not want or need Here are links to some of the articles we discuss in this episode: Brock Bastian and Ashley Humphrey for The Conversation: “How to avoid ‘toxic positivity' and take the less direct route to happiness” Allyson Chiu for The Washington Post : Time to ditch ‘toxic positivity,' experts say: ‘It's okay not to be okay' Elizabeth Bernstein for The Wall Street Journal : Toxic Positivity Is Very Real, and Very Annoying Links to other episodes that mention toxic positivity: Fresh Take: Kate Bowler on the Truths We Need To Hear Fresh Take: Taylor Harris on Motherhood, Genetics, and Facing the Unknown Special thanks to this month's sponsors: Betabrand has reinvented comfort and style with their dress yoga pants, and we love ours! TW: COVID, Death, Suicide As we acknowledge the two-year anniversary of the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we welcome the incredible Christian Franz, who worked in an ICU in NYC, to discuss his experience on the frontlines. Christian talks about how he made it through each day alongside media and online misinformation, and the trauma and heartbreak he experienced as, at one point, he was saying goodbye to around 7-10 patients a night. He talks about how pre-existing flaws in the healthcare system became so much more apparent during this time, why he made the decision to start studying medicine, and how he wants to dedicate his life to fixing the system and uniting nurses and doctors. On top of all of that, he has an IG live series and podcast called Friends of Franz which aims to humanize healthcare workers and broaden access to medical information. This is an incredibly emotional episode highlighting the unresolved mental health consequences of this pandemic for our frontline workers. It is essential to validate the experience of healthcare workers, and we hope this episode can be cathartic, as we honor Christian's experience. To get more from Christian, follow him on Instagram @chrsfranz and his podcast on Instagram @friendsoffranzpod and wherever you listen. Keep in mind the high-stake decisions and moral duress healthcare professionals currently face will undoubtedly take a toll on our field. Is it rational to still be mad about that time in second grade when the kid right in front of you took the last sprinkles at the ice cream social? Is it reasonable to think just a little less of your childhood friend for serving Chex Mix at his wedding? Ours is not to reason why. This episode isn't here to tell you whether you all should be maintaining these grudges so carefully. It's here to hold space for them all. Stay angry, Hellions! Get all your travel nursing questions answered in today's jam-packed episode. Career Travel Nurse Sarah Gaines joins your hosts to discuss staffing agency exploitation, nurse pay caps, and the incredible benefits of being a travel nurse. She talks about starting The Six Figure Travel Nurse out of frustration, and how she transitioned to counselling nurses during the pandemic. She reads "the letter" led by Peter Welch and Morgan Griffith to the White House's COIVD-19 response team, and breaks down the disinformation and assumptions that came from it. She explains that financial fluctuation is more volatile now because of coined, but crisis rates existed before and will exist after the pandemic. Sarah offers advice to nursing students who want to become a travel nurse, and to nurses thinking of making the jump. Plus, she debunks common travel nurse myths. Sarah also highlights the exploitation that has occurred in healthcare during this pandemic, and suggests attention should be on ratios, hospitals, or insurance companies, as opposed to agencies. Our society connects thin bodies not just with better health, but with greater happiness. And many of us have been duped into believing that the rewards of eternal thinness are available to anyone who "eats right" and tries hard enough. But teaching our children "intuitive eating" suggests a different path: putting our kids' relationship with food and their bodies and their mental health on the front burner, and appearance and weight on the back. Amee Severson is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who identifies as queer and nonbinary. Her work focuses on body positivity, fat acceptance, and providing safe and inclusive care for the LGBTQ+ community. Amee is the co-author of the new book How to Raise an Intuitive Eater: Raising the Next Generation with Food and Body Confidence. In this epsiode, Amee explains why the well-meaning strategies of concerned parents around food and weight usually end up backfiring how raising kids who eat intuitively means engaging with the complicated messages around food or dieting that we may have ourselves received the "three keys" for embracing a new path toward intuitive eating for our families Intuitive eating is definitely a back-to-one sort of thing, a resetting of expectations that we need to revisit often. But here's why that work is worth it: our kids deserve to feel lovable, worthy, and accepted, no matter what their bodies look like. Find HOW TO RAISE AN INTUITIVE EATER in our Bookshop store! What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms
We know we have to be our kids' soft place to fall. We understand why they absolutely fall apart after a long day at school. But does it really have to be Mom who always gets the worst of it? Our listener Michelle wrote in to say: I have been pondering something I call the "Safe Space Paradox,” or why children behave so differently around their primary caregiver. I am repeatedly told by grandparents, teachers, my husband, that my children were "perfect angels" for them. And yet the minute I open the door it is a cue for my children to resume the whining, fighting, and crying. I understand this is because of the deep emotional connection children form with their primary caregiver. But is there any research on ways to actually improve this? Or that I can actually enjoy this precious side of my children? In this episode, we discuss why kids really do save their worst behavior for us (and why we're part of the reason that can happen) how hard it can be to feel like the dirty hand towel for everyone's bad feelings strategies that work (a little) to help out-of-control kids contain their large feelings For more on "after school restraint collapse," check out our episode "Why 5 to 8 p.m. Is The Worst: How To Handle the After-School Crankies" Here are links to some writing on the topic that we discuss in this episode: Lauren Cahn for Reader's Digest: Here's Why Kids Behave So Much Worse Around Their Parents Fern Weis for Motherly: The real reason your kids act worse for you than anyone else—and how to help Beth Shaw for Psychology Today: When Trauma Gets Stuck in the Body Special thanks to this month's sponsors: Betabrand has reinvented comfort and style with their dress yoga pants, and we love ours! Taylor Harris is a writer and mom of three living in Pennsylvania. Her first book, THIS BOY WE MADE: A Memoir of Motherhood, Genetics, and Facing the Unknown, is the story of A Black mother bumping up against the limits of everything she thought she believed—about science and medicine, about motherhood, and about her faith—in search of the truth about her son. Taylor says her memoir is "about a day where Motherhood divided into Before and After." In this episode we hear about the particulars of Taylor's continuing journey to find answers for her child, and how we can all find in that story our own feelings of fear and uncertainty as parents. Where do we want to be by our next birthday? Hear about how Lisa-Jo and Christie are making plans! Lisa-Jo's husband, Peter, said, "We think our job as a Christian is to produce something FOR Christ instead of receiving something FROM Christ." Will we accept Jesus's gentle invitation to go deeper? Even when it cuts deep. Are we willing? Jesus is willing. Getting healing can also mean pain comes too. Lisa-Jo revisits past pain and past trauma. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms
What's no longer interesting to you? How has your life been improved simply by no longer caring about something the world definitely thinks you should? The key here is no longer interesting. James Bond movies and auto parts probably never made the list in the first place. We're talking stuff you turned your back on after having cared perhaps a little too much. Which isn't to say you don't get pushback when you put things down. Just because *you* stop being interested in what's for dinner doesn't mean other small denizens of your home are going to stop asking you. Just because you stop caring about the scale doesn't mean your sister will stop asking if you've lost weight. But whether it's celebrity culture, making our kids dress appropriately for the weather, or what we wear to school drop-off, here are some things that are no longer interesting to us (and to our listeners). Did you know you can share this episode from whatever app you're using to listen right now? Text it to a friend! I like watching sports, but I don't have the dedication to be a diehard fan. To be a fan–especially a body-painting, tailgating kind of fan–you have love any player who joins the team or forgive constant losing and that ain't my bag. There's a lot of shit within sports fandoms I don't understand, so I asked Josh Terry help break down what goes on behind the face paint. **The following episode of Strictly Stalking contains topics including suicide. Listener discretion is advised.** Jules was stalked by an ex-boyfriend who had a long history of stalking other women. Jules met an attractive, intelligent, and well traveled man who she was immediately drawn to while online dating. After a passionate weekend together, he moved in with her. Over the next couple days Jules began receiving anonymous social media messages revealing her new boyfriend's past history of manipulating and abusing other women. When she confronted him, he told her that the messages probably came from his "crazy ex-girlfriend." She soon discovered that he had created fake dating profiles and that he had kids and a wife that she didn't know about. After Jules asked him to leave, he began sending abusive emails telling her to kill herself. She eventually discovered nude photos he posted of her online. Jules turned to the police and was able to get him charged in a felony case...later discovering that he had stalked many others before her. After quitting her job and moving to a new town, Skylar began receiving a series of anonymous emails. The e-mails became vulgar and explicit, asking her to hook up and describing the fantasy of breaking into her house and raping her. When Skylar didn't reply the sender made threats claiming they would get what they wanted and take their own pics of her moaning and screaming - but that she "probably wouldn't like it." Skylar discovered that the person responsible was someone she knew well - who also happened to be an Arkansas State Police Officer. She reveals details of her horrific ordeal and heroic battle to get police to put one of their own behind bars in her new book called Thrillsought: The True Story of the Woman Stalked by Arkansas State Police Officer, Mark Holland. Tam was stalked by a man who's been serial stalking and abusing women since he was seventeen. After Tam began dating a guy she met on Tinder, he slowly revealed details of his violent past. He explained they were mistakes of his youth so Tam gave him the benefit of the doubt...until he became violent and their relationship turned toxic. After she left him, he called and texted hundreds of times, threatening her and posting private photos of her online. Tam filed a personal protection order (PPO) and learned about his criminal history including multiple charges, probation violations, PPO violations, physical violence, threats, and stalking. Shanetta was stalked by a man attempting to take control of her house. After purchasing her first home, Shanetta received disturbing letters in the mail from someone claiming ownership of the land on which the property was built. Soon after, she discovered that her house had been broken into and the locks were changed. She was then confronted by the person who was responsible for the letters. The stalker was arrested, charged with burglary, then released only to break in again prompting a standoff with the police department and SWAT team. Hi friends! On today's show, I'm truly honored to have a discussion with ABC news correspondent and host of The View, Paula Faris. She is in a new season of life, but she walks us through the power of a pivot and what she learned as she walked away from broadcast journalism to honor a new season of life. Today we talk about pivoting. A pivot is a fundamental change in strategy while staying grounded in your vision and facts. Listen in as Paula and I talk about several pivots in her life and how they led her to her true calling and destiny in life. Not only does Paula have her own podcast, she has a book walking people through identifying their calling in this season. You can find out about all she is doing by going to PaulaFarisOfficial.com or you can check out all the things on social media and tag @PaulaFaris and @BiancaOlthoff to share what you are applying to your life or what you learned. I know that it's always a gift to guests when they know their words have impacted your life. It's definitely a gift to me. Speaking of gifts, as we roll into our one-year birthday next week, it would be a gift to me if you subscribed to this podcast and left a review. Not only does this inform you of when new podcasts are up, but it also helps this show get into the ears of new people. I can't wait to celebrate our one-year party next week. Dr. Smith was stalked by a man who attended her singles bible studies group. His behavior made everyone feel uncomfortable - especially when he asked the female members for rides home. Dr. Smith alerted her church Pastor, who told him he needed to join a men's only group...and the next week her car windshield was smashed during bible study. She moved hundreds of miles away, only to be confronted by her stalker on a bus near her new apartment and at the new church she was attending. Police told Dr. Smith that if she hadn't had a romantic relationship with him she could not get a restraining order, and that they wouldn't take a report until he physically harmed her. Welcome back, friends! I'm so excited about this week and you know what, I know this podcast is not gonna be for everyone. If you are tuning in and listening to this, it's because you want to understand the power that you possess as a person and as a child of God. I believe that by us having these conversations and dialoguing, our lives can change. When we take next steps, even in our faith journey, we can go to depths that we never knew possible and we can experience things in our life that we might have felt impossible. Today I am discussing the three different baptisms that we see in the Bible. They are: Baptism of Salvation Baptism of Water Spiritual Baptism We are here on earth to change the world, to go to the ends of the world, or the end of our street, and tell people about Jesus. And if necessary, use words. I want us to step into position to be prepared to receive the gift that God has for us. How? By taking these three steps: Remove all barriers Request the Holy Spirit Receive Him by faith We are continuing on and I'm encouraging, you DON'T QUIT. You've come too far to quit. And if some of you are already getting baptized, take a picture of your baptism, post it on social media and tag me @BiancaOlthoff so that I can praise with you! If you haven't yet subscribed to the podcast, as always, you are invited to do so and if you like the podcast, leave a positive review. Love you all! ?? Have you ever heard the term “green cleaning” and wondered what the heck people meant? In this episode, the president of an OG green cleaning company, Diana Stewart, shares with us what “green cleaning” really is. Diana addresses common myths about environmentally friendly cleaning and is going to rock your world. To view the full show notes, continue reading or visit my website: www.heartfelthippie.com Diana is a busy lady. She's a wife, she's a mom, she's a daughter with a lot of responsibilities, but she is also killing it as the president of EnvirOx. EnvirOx was started over 20 years ago by Diana's own father. Diana did not expect to find herself as the second president of the company, but she has enjoyed the journey and learned a lot along the way. To start off our conversation, Diana and I talk about feminism in the work place and what it's like to be a strong female in a position of power while overseeing several employees. Diana is very vulnerable about her own biases and ways that she is learning to be a conscious leader. After getting back on track, Diana and I talk all things green cleaning! Why does green cleaning matter? Well, there's the health of our planet, but there's also the health of our own bodies! Diana explains why it's important to be aware of the toxicity of many household cleaners and how they can negatively impact our lives. EnvirOx is actually targeted towards industrial cleaning in places like schools, hospitals, and large offices. While this might sound irrelevant to many, it's interesting to hear why these settings can be even more important to address than in our own households. Have you thought about the settings that you, your children, your friends spend the bulk of their days in? For most of us, that's in a space where the windows are shut tight and the abrasive cleaners are stifling in the air! Yuck! But, have no fear. Not only does EnvirOx offer an amazing alternative, but Diana also teaches us how we can have a voice in seeing these things change. Finally, Diana addresses an overlooked aspect of sustainability - marginalized people groups. Typically when we talk about things like green cleaning, they are first being marketed to privileged people. Not only that, but a large amount of those who are employed in cleaning industries and are dealing with the harsh cleaners every day are representing minority groups. As a result, minority groups are often not given the same opportunities at sustainable living as those with more privilege are, and so we can see the cycles of poverty continue ‘round and ‘round. Green cleaning is an excellent first step in prioritizing your own health, the health of the planet, and those around you who have less of a voice! Make sure you listen in on this conversation, because Diana will INSPIRE and TEACH you how to make all those things real priorities.
