Catalyst: A Creative Industries Podcast

Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 13 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. This week's first segment looks at what it is like to be a freelancer in the music industry landscape of Los Angeles in the year 2025.  Amber Zhu dives into this topic with the subject of her interview, Lu Cheng, a freelance music composer based in Los Angeles, California, who got his master's degree from USC has worked as a composer for various media formats including film, TV and the gaming industry. Zhu and Cheng discuss Cheng's career trajectory, from his first job as a composer assistant, through his moving on to short films and then expanding to other media forms. They discuss the experience of working with and for creatives before touching on current industry trends including Cheng's insights regarding the emergence of AI technology and how short-form vertical videos like those on the ReelShort platform have changed or will change the landscape of the creator's community. They wrap up the conversation with Lu's advice for future creators and people who want to pursue careers in the creative industries. Our second episode of the week follows Will Swan on his journey through the career of Elizabeth Moore. Moore, who currently uses her skills and knowledge from working in the creative industries as a consultant and life coach, started her career in radio and print on Boston's North Shore at: WFNX Radio, The Marblehead Reporter, and WNSH Radio. She moved on to become Personal Assistant to Maury Povich before working as an executive assistant to Jann Wenner, of Wenner Media, publishers of Rolling Stone, US Weekly, and Men's Journal. Perhaps what she is most known for is holding the position of Chief Of Staff to Oprah Winfrey for 11 years before serving as a consulting Producer with the original team that created the Emmy award winning Super Soul Sunday on OWN, The Oprah Winfrey Network. Swan and Moore delve into Moore's long and varied career, reflecting on the work and projects she has contributed to throughout. Before concluding the conversation, they touch on advice that Moore has for those navigating through entertainment industries, including dealing with some of the more corporate aspects.

Dr. David Levy - God's Wisdom Freshly Revealed

Part 3/4 John the Baptist was making a big splash. People were coming to him in droves. He was leading the greatest revival in the history of Israel. People were repenting and being baptized. John's ministry was going well, and Jesus said John was the greatest person who had ever lived. Then Jesus said, "the least in the kingdom was greater than John." What did it mean? Why didn't John follow Jesus or send his disciples to follow Jesus? Why did John not ask to join Jesus as a disciple? Do you check with God or assume you are on the right path? Downtown Battle Mountain is an expertly crafted vision of chaos and beauty. The R&B-influenced cleans of vocalist Jonny Craig both soar and soothe while screaming vocalist Jon Mess starkly contrasts his namesake and counterpart with a screaming style that is dwarfed by the absurdity of his lyricism. Despite present day success, the band failed to capitalise on the following they were building as vocalist Jonny Craig was kicked out before this version of the band could truly bloom. In 2010, Craig would return to the band to record and release Downtown Battle Mountain II. DBM2 would ultimately showcase the more laid-back side of Jonny Craig, along with the more experimental Dance Gavin Dance that had emerged on their previous record, Happiness. DBM2 would feature rap verses from guitarist Will Swan and complete departures from genre in songs like Blue Dream. Will Swan has celebrated and elevated radical guitar music through the course of nine frenetic, volatile Dance Gavin Dance albums, a pair of releases with his psychedelic post-hardcore side project https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/sianvars-will-swan-beautiful-intensity (Sianvar), and the creation of his https://www.blueswanrecords.com/ (Blue Swan Records) label. The common thread is his hue of beautiful dysfunction and his ethos of pushing the instrument (and its sounds) forward. Make no mistake, Swan can play the guitar. His style is equal parts violence and grace, with pit stops at all points between. He terrorizes the frets as well as he tenderly dances on them—and the results can be chaotic or calming. But what most excites him about guitar is making it not sound like a guitar. "I really like those tones that take the guitar far away from its normal sounds," Swan explains. "I like to layer those with typical guitar tones, and to mix cool sounds with interesting-playing parts. I need both of those elements to enjoy the experience." "I'm self-taught, so I don't know music theory, so when I'm writing I don't know what things are going to sound like. I'm just messing around and seeing what catches my ear. It's similar to the way I explore pedals. I don't quite know what's going to happen, but if I come across something that I enjoy, I'll use it and don't question it." The afternoon of Dance Gavin Dance's headlining show at Nashville's Marathon Music Works, Swan detailed his signature Kiesels (and the other Kiesel he's been preferring), explains how the Friedman Small Box is (phenomenally) filling the void of his favored vintage Rockerverb, and breaks down why his pedals help him embrace the textures and tones of other instruments. For a band with dance in their name, they kinda make it hard with their heavy-core sound don't they but it seems that fans are going mental over Dance Gavin Dance heading back to Australia for a tour and we had to grab Will Swan for a chat all about it on this week's episode of Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall. Swanny (as we've dubbed him) discusses the band's new album Artifical Selection and their passionate motivation to constantly release album after album, in comparison to other bands who tend to tour the same one for a few years. The guys are also known for dabbling into the realm of cover songs and (in some cases) they make the originals better than they were so podcast host Browny hit Will up about the possibility of them recording an album of covers in future. Plus there are stacks of New Music to get through including a double shot from metalcore singer Lauren Babic, who not only fronts the new band Crazy 88 (with YouTube star Jarrod Alonge and As It Is frontman Patty Walters), but also her original band Red Handed Denial who are set to release their new album next month and we play the debut single from it. There's also new stuff from Windwaker, New Years Day, Being Jane Lane, Simple Creatures and Fallujah, throwbacks from Alexisonfire, Story Of The Year, Veil of Maya and The Beautiful Monument + heaps more... #WoSUATW #DanceGavinDance #PostHardcore #ProgMetal #WillSwan #Alexisonfire #RedHandedDenial #Crazy88 #LaurenBabic #Windwaker #StoryOfTheYear #SOTY #AmityAffliction #TheAmityAffliction #TAA #VeilOfMaya #Fallujah #Metalcore #NewYearsDay #DLAUS2019 #TheBeautifulMonument #BeingJaneLane #Punk #SimpleCreatures #MarkHoppus #PopRock #WallOfSound #MusicPodcast

Dance Gavin Dance are one of those bands that refuses to be pigeon-holed. Their sound is as eclectic and diverse as you could get within genres and as such is a delight to listen to. At times it feels as though two separate CD's are overlapping at the same time, creating a whole new musical dynamic that owes as much to experimentation as it does to courage from the band."We have the backbone," stressed Will Swan, guitarist, in reference to how they can genre hop so effortlessly and effectively. "Even when we are jumping around and changing genres you can still tell it is DGD because of the vocal style and the style of everyone n the band. We bring that to whatever we're doing regardless of the genre and it ends up being that cohesive DGD sound whether we do it intentionally or not."One of the more unique aspects of the bands sound is the contrasting vocal styles of the two frontmen. While it is not uncommon to have dual vocals, the range between the two on show here has to be heard to be appreciated, with Swan admitting this was a key factor in putting the band together."Yeah, I like having those dual vocals," he nodded, "and that idea when we started was kind of unique. After a while other bands have done it and it has become a normal thing but it was a little bit weird at the time we came out having a straight up clean vocalist and a screamer. It was different and I liked that. It allowed for some chaos and also a lot of melodic moments so you could hear that duality."Listen to the attached audio to hear Will speak about the bands upcoming album, Artificial Selection, on June 8, as well as the behind the scenes workings of putting that album together and the difficulties the band faced in picking singles to promote the album. Will also discusses the unconventional song titles and film clips, the climate that helped create Dance Gavin Dance and more.Kris Peters

Jon Mess and Will Swan of Dance Gavin Dance guest this week on your favorite metal podcast. We talk about how the band is shunned by metal fans and where they believe that comes from, how they have succeeded while so many others have failed, and their latest release, Mothership. We also talk about their perspective on the rotating door at their lead singer position, and how that changes the way they write music and what they are able to do as a band.  We talk more about the lead singer problem in light of the big news this week that Asking Alexandria dumped their new singer to take back their old one. Who has that worked for in the past and how might it feel for the people involved? Is it a “grass is always greener” issue, or the thrill of the chase? It worked for Anthrax, TesseracT and several other bands; fans certainly seem to want the old guy back. Well, except in Iron Maiden… Songs: Dance Gaving Dance – "Chucky Vs.
