Well, it was another memorable Winter Olympics indeed. Congrats on my Team Japan, thank you for another display of excellence, resilience, and good sportsmanship. Back here in Calgary last week, we witnessed another metal historic moment as Megadeth brought their final tour with Anthrax and Exodus. They thrashed us good! ā€œIf I hadn't have known that was Anthrax, I would have guessed it was Alice In Chainsā€¦ā€ Ā  The early 90's was a strange time for metal, most notably due to the change in the musical landscape with the emergence of the Seattle scene and Alice In Chains becoming one of the key crossover bands to bridge the transition from thrash to the next wave of darker, grungier sounding heavy metal.Ā  Ā  ā€œEvery time you do that, I have a less chance of getting laidā€¦ā€ Ā  While ANTHRAX began the 90's with a much darker and angrier sound on Persistence of Time, the darkness and heaviness of their sound would become further amplified with the departure of Joey Belladonna and the addition of JOHN BUSH (formerly of Armored Saint) on vocals, resulting in a new era of Anthrax: BUSHTHRAX!Ā  Ā  With more grit and heft in the vocals than before, the JOHN BUSH ERA of ANTHRAX is definitely a different flavor than the band's output throughout the 80's with Joey Belladonna, and with the changing of the guard in the early 90's due to the growing popularity of the Seattle sound, the time was right for a slight alteration to the thrashier sounds of 80's era ThrashThrax, resulting in the darker, more aggressive BUSHTHRAX era that would follow for the next decade or so. Ā  ā€œAlright, well it's not like we've never done that for you beforeā€¦ā€ Ā  Always remember that ā€œspringtime LSD is the best time for LSDā€ and that ā€œit's not as fun for me when I push awayā€. By 1986, Metallica's assault on the music establishment and eardrums was in full force. Their previous album, Ride The Lightning, had caught the attention of Elektra Records who signed them to an 8 record deal. Though they refused to make videos, weren't on MTV and didn't really release singles, the band gained fans anywhere they played live and through an underground tape trading community. They were establishing thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax through constant touring and a relentless lifestyle. The boys really upped their game on Master of Puppets through stronger vocals from James Hetfield, more punishing riffs and melodic (and sometimes spacey) bass from Cliff Burton. The opener Battery sets the tone for this very influential album before giving way to the 8+ minute title track. True to form, Metallica offered up an instrumental in Orion which was heavily influenced by the classical training of Cliff Burton. Songs about war (Disposable Heroes), fake evangelism (Leper Messiah), insanity Welcome Home (Sanitarium) make for one amazing heavy metal album, the likes of which the world hadn't seen. We talk about the songs, what they mean in the Metallica catalog, their tour for the record with Ozzy and of course the tragedy in Sweden that took the life of Cliff Burton. From underground band to being featured on Stranger Things, the journey of Master of Puppets is one for the ages. When an Australian thrash band that never broke big in the U.S. gets compared to early Metallica, Slayer, and Maiden in the same breath, you know you've stumbled onto something special. This episode dives into Mortal Sin's 1986 debut Mayhemic Destruction—a ferocious, drum‑heavy, DIY thrash record from Sydney that plays like a missing puzzle piece in 80s metal history.Across the conversation, the hosts unpack how Mortal Sin emerged out of Australia's pub‑rock and Buffalo‑style heavy scene into a faster, more aggressive sound after drummer Wayne Campbell discovered Metallica through tape‑trading in 1984. They trace the band's rapid rise from self‑funded studio upstarts to landing a global deal, touring with Metallica, Megadeth, and Testament, and struggling with that classic ā€œtoo big for pubs, too small for arenasā€ problem back home. Along the way, they dig into the band's revolving‑door lineup, eerie mystery around the original drummer's disappearance, and the evolution of Mortal Sin's sound across later records.Musically, the episode zeroes in on what makes Mayhemic Destruction such a compelling outlier in 80s thrash. The drums and low end dominate the mix in a way that completely inverts the American template, forcing listeners to dig for the guitars and exposing a strange, rewarding hybrid of thrash, New Wave of British Heavy Metal, power metal, Motƶrhead grit, and proto‑death‑metal experiments on the title track. There's plenty of love for the riffs, time‑changes, and dark modal choices in songs like ā€œThe Curseā€ and ā€œLebanon,ā€ but also honest criticism of the limited, Hetfield‑ish vocal approach and the odd sequencing choices that bury some of the strongest material in the back half.If you're into 80s thrash metal, early Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, NWOBHM, or obscure Australian metal bands that never quite got their due, this deep dive into Mortal Sin and Mayhemic Destruction is absolutely in your wheelhouse. It's a conversation about more than one album—it's about how geography, timing, and weird production decisions can turn a record into a cult artifact waiting to be rediscovered.Episode Highlights0:00 – Mayhem from Sydney – Setting up Mortal Sin, Mayhemic Destruction, and why this Australian thrash debut matters in the 80s metal landscape.5:05 – Battle jackets and logos – Gavin's origin story with Mortal Sin via patches, Kerrang! mags, and why some bands lived as imagery long before you ever heard a note.7:00 – Band history and lineup chaos – From Sydney origins and early rehearsals with Lino to global deals, tours with Metallica and Megadeth, and constant guitar player turnover.12:05 – DIY Mega Metal and Hetfield's stamp – Recording at 301 Studios, self‑releasing the album, mailing it out like a zine, and landing James Hetfield's 1986 endorsement.17:20 – ā€œThe Curseā€ – How the opening riffing, harmonics, and dissonant second‑guitar lines signal that Mortal Sin aren't just copying Bay Area thrash.22:30 – Drum mix from another planet – Why the massive, low‑end‑heavy drum sound flips the usual thrash hierarchy and changes how you hear the riffs and groove.24:50 – ā€œLebanonā€ – Dark, almost Slayer‑like scales, Dokken/Mr. Scary vibes, and how this track becomes a standout for mood and melody.25:30 – Thrash without a ballad – The near‑total absence of slow songs, the fake‑out intro of ā€œLiar,ā€ and what that says about the band's commitment to speed and aggression.30:15 – Honest strengths and weak spots – Praise for the riffs and rhythm section, plus a candid look at the limited vocals, buried mixes, and backward‑feeling sequencing.35:25 – Album art, demons, and Sydney in ruins – The Dungeons & Dragons‑style cover, nuked‑city imagery, and why this screamed ā€œTipper Gore nightmareā€ in the 80s.35:30 – ā€œMayhemic Destructionā€ (title track) – Proto‑death‑metal vocals and blast beats a year before Death's Scream Bloody Gore, and why burying it as the closer was a smart move.40:30 – Live vs. studio – What the 20th anniversary live tracks reveal about the band's true sound compared to the unique, drum‑heavy studio mix.[45:00 – Final verdict – Is Mayhemic Destruction a worthy album, a decent single, or a lost cult gem in the Australian thrash canon?Love uncovering 80s metal obscurities and lost thrash gems? Though they were one of the first so-called ā€œgrungeā€ bands to sign to a major label, Alice in Chains were something of an outlier in the late ā€˜80s/early ā€˜90s Seattle scene. They didn't fall directly into the punk camp, or the hair metal camp, and even the true metalheads thought they weren't hardcore enough. This became painfully evident when the band opened a tour for Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, and were hazed, spat on, and booed. Alice's lead singer, Layne Staley, could take the criticism. He had a prankster's spirit, not to mention a rock ā€˜n roll attitude that paired well with his killer rock ā€˜n roll voice. But newfound fame was overwhelming, as was the destructive addiction to heroin Layne developed to deal with it all. Soon Layne Staley found himself lost in a jungle of his own making, not unlike the jungle that he sang so convincingly about in one of Alice in Chains' most endearing songs. Dave Mustaine returns to celebrate Megadeth's latest album reaching #1 on the charts - a rare achievement for a pure metal record. He shares the emotional moment he learned about the milestone and details the extensive marketing campaign behind the release. Despite this success, Mustaine candidly discusses the physical limitations affecting his playing ability, particularly issues with his hands that make this Megadeth's final studio album. He offers insights into standout tracks like 'Tipping Point,' 'Hey, God,' and his cover of Metallica's 'Ride The Lightning,' which he co-wrote. The conversation turns to the physical toll that decades of metal performance has taken on the 'Big Four' bands, with Mustaine suggesting a potential final Big Four show with rotating slots for Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer beneath headliners Metallica. Also on the podcast, Rival Sons frontman Jay Buchanan joins Eddie Trunk to discuss his solo album 'Weapons of Beauty', a departure from his rock band's sound featuring acoustically-driven, personal ballads. Jay reveals his unconventional creative process, spending three months in an underground desert bunker to focus on songwriting. He shares insights about the album's lead single 'Caroline', his experience acting in the Bruce Springsteen film 'Deliver Me from Nowhere', and reflects on Rival Sons' performance at Black Sabbath's farewell show.Ā  Catch Eddie Trunk every M-F from 3:00-5:00pm ET on Trunk Nation on SiriusXM Faction Talk Channel 103.And don't forget to follow Eddie on X and Instagram!Follow the link to get your free 3-month trial of SiriusXM: http://siriusxm.com/eddietrunk Find all episodes of Trunk Nation: https://siriusxm.com/trunknation Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. New research shows that viruses locked in the Arctic permafrost for thousands of years have the potential to infect present-day organisms. Accompanied with a warming planet, this issue is really starting to thaw out. So what can brave scientists and institutions on the frontlines of tracking diseases do about it? And how can understanding our genomic history with diseases over thousands of years better prepare us in the fight to overcome them?Dr. Kaylee Byers starts our journey by slinking into a disease-tracking genomics lab at Simon Fraser University to meet Dr. Michael Trimble and Dr. Will Hsiao to understand the challenge of outpacing the rapid evolution of viruses. Then she pops across the ocean to speak with Dr. Birgitta EvengƄrd and Dr. Jean-Michel Claverie about whether the Pandora's box of ancient diseases frozen in the arctic have the potential to become the next global outbreak as temperatures warm. Key Changes: Dan Spitz

Second Act Stories

This week we're sharing a series of episodes that capture one of our favorite themes on Second Act Stories: the moment when life changes key. These Key Changes episodes feature people whose lives have been shaped by music: some who left it behind for something new; others who found their way to it later than expected. Together, they're the stories we return to when we want to show how reinvention really works, not as a clean break, but as a shift in rhythm, perspective, and purpose. Whether you're a longtime listener or just discovering the show, these episodes reflect the heart of the podcast: bold pivots, unexpected harmony, and second acts that still have plenty to say. Dan Spitz is a true pioneer in every sense of the word. As the lead guitarist of legendary band Anthrax, Dan was one of the innovators who birthed the entire genre of thrash metal music. Anthrax is one of the "Big Four" thrash metal bands, a group that also includes Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. He sold millions of albums, played on the world's biggest stages, and saw his music influence legions of acts that would follow. In 1995, as Anthrax continued to reach new heights, something changed. Dan realized his heart was no longer in it, so he quit the band without a plan for what was next. Dan had been exposed to watchmaking at a young age through his grandfather, who owned a jewelry store where he repaired watches in New York's Catskill Mountains. That childhood experience came rushing back when he stumbled across an ad for the Bulova watchmaking school. The pieces fit together as perfectly as the mechanics of a complicated watch, and Dan enrolled, graduating a four-year program in 18 months. Then he became the first American to be accepted into a Swiss watchmaking school, and his incredible second act was official. Today, Dan is one of the world's most sought-after master watchmakers. He's the watchmaker who watchmakers go to when they can't solve a problem. In this episode, you'll hear some of the details about the birth of thrash metal, the conflict that led to Dan's departure from Anthrax, and the journey that led a thrash metal legend become a legend in the world of fine watches. You can learn more about Dan Spitz by visiting his website atĀ www.delraybeachvintagewatches.com, andĀ www.danspitz.com. ******* If you enjoy Second Act Stories, please leave us a review here. Aleister Crowley was an English occultist, ceremonial magician, poet, philosopher, political theorist, novelist, mountaineer, and painter. He founded the religion of Thelema, identifying himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Ɔon of Horus in the early 20th century. Most know of him from his occult celebrity built on the premise, "Do What Thou Will Is The Whole of The Law" but what about his other "secret" life as an agent for the British government?Joel continues his series on Agent Aleister Crowley and he picks up the story with Crowley's reemergence into New York City. Joel starts with Aleister Crowley's connection to another shady individual, Paul Marie Bolo Pasha, and his connection to the propaganda efforts by the Germans to try to manipulate France into peace during World War I. Before turning the page to a new year, Cary the Metal Geek and Sean the Metal Pigeon take a wide-angle look at everything that defined 2025. In this extended rewind episode, the guys reflect on the albums that dominated their listening over the past year—and admit they were genuinely surprised by which records ended up standing out the most, with unexpected favorites and late-year releases reshaping their perspective. The conversation turns reflective with an In Memoriam segment, honoring the musicians, artists, and influential figures we lost in 2025 and recognizing the lasting impact they left on metal and music culture. From there, Cary and Sean revisit the biggest moments in metal and music news, breaking down the stories that shaped the scene and sparked conversation throughout the year. The episode wraps with discussion of recent live shows, including reactions to performances by Sarah Brightman, Omnium Gatherum, and Death Angel, sharing what made each show memorable and how they stacked up live. Part reflection, part tribute, and part concert recap, Episode 316 serves as MSRcast's thoughtful send-off to 2025—before charging headfirst into what's next.

ā€œI'm not Peter North shooting ropes across the roomā€¦ā€ Ā  Released on September 12th (and in the U.S. on the 13th), 2011, WORSHIP MUSIC is the first ANTHRAX album featuring Joey Belladonna on vocals since 1990's Persistence of Time and is truly a return to their thrash roots, with a nice blend of classic 80's era Thrash Thrax and the more groove laden heaviness of 90's era Bush Thrax. John had some funny stories of the Metallica/ W.A.S.P. tour they did in 1985. He also to me about new Armored Saint music coming in 2026.
