Sorry to everyone for making you wait this long. Welcome to the inaugural episode of this series, which will offer you a concise overview of Chinese history from mythical times to the time of the last emperor of the last imperial dynasty. We'll start off with the traditional stories surrounding the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors 三皇五帝 and cover the Xia 夏 and Shang 商 dynasties. The amazing story of the Oracle Bones will also be presented, and how this marked the beginning of recorded Chinese history. In this episode, the story of Jiang Ziya 姜子牙 and his role in supporting the Ji Clan 姬家族 in their efforts to establish the Zhou Dynasty. In the following episodes, we'll wander through all the dynasties and look at all the people, places, incidents, and events that make up the rich tapestry of Chinese history. Former premier Zhu Rongji passed away in Beijing on Wednesday. He was 98.Zhu, who had served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 14th and 15th Central Committees of the Communist Party of China, died of illness, according to an official obituary.The obituary was jointly issued by the CPC Central Committee; the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature; the State Council, China's Cabinet; and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, China's top political advisory body.It extolled Zhu as an excellent Party member, a time-tested and loyal communist fighter, and an outstanding proletarian revolutionist, statesman and leader of the Party and the State.Born in October 1928 in Changsha, Hunan province, Zhu joined revolutionary work in December 1948 and became a CPC member in October 1949.Between 1987 and 1991, he served successively as deputy secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, mayor of Shanghai, and secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee.During his tenure, he advocated for adjusting the city's industrial structure, developing an export-oriented economy and enhancing its international competitiveness.Zhu played a crucial role in advancing the development and opening-up of Shanghai's Pudong New Area. His efforts laid a solid foundation for Shanghai's further reform, opening-up and development, the obituary said.In 1991, Zhu was appointed vice-premier of the State Council.In October 1992, he was elected a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and its standing committee, and he was responsible for the executive work of the State Council.In June 1993, he concurrently served as the governor of the People's Bank of China, the country's central bank.Zhu studied and developed approaches and measures to strengthen and improve macroeconomic regulation, making significant and effective contributions to curbing an overheated economy, reining in inflation and achieving an economic "soft landing".He pushed forward efforts to rectify and restore order in the fiscal and taxation sectors, accelerated fiscal and tax reforms and helped improve China's financial regulation system.In September 1997, Zhu was reelected a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and its standing committee.In March 1998, he was appointed premier of the State Council, and he later served as the secretary of the leading Party members group of the State Council.Facing the impact of the Asian financial crisis and the catastrophic flooding in China, Zhu focused on a shift from implementing a moderately tight fiscal and monetary policy to adopting a proactive fiscal policy and a prudent monetary policy, expanding domestic demand and deepening reforms in key areas, thereby maintaining steady and rapid economic growth.During Zhu's tenure as vice-premier and premier of the State Council, a series of policies and measures were adopted to expand opening-up, encourage exports, keep the renminbi exchange rate stable without devaluation, attract foreign investment, and firmly safeguard the prosperity and stability of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as an international financial center.He also presided over the implementation of major reforms in the social security system, healthcare system, and investment and financing system, among others, promoting the establishment of the basic framework of a socialist market economy.He oversaw the completion of the arduous negotiations for China's accession to the World Trade Organization.In March 2003, Zhu no longer served as premier of the State Council. After retiring from leadership posts, he steadfastly upheld and supported the leadership of the CPC Central Committee.He continued to care about the great cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics and firmly supported efforts to improve conduct, promote integrity and fight corruption.Zhu's life was a revolutionary, fighting and glorious one, and one that was dedicated to wholeheartedly serving the people and the communist cause, the obituary said, adding that his death is a great loss to the Party and the State.
In this week's episode, Blood editor Dr. Laura Michaelis interviews Drs. Matthew Frank and Jieqing Zhu on their latest articles published in volume 147 issue 22 of Blood. Dr. Zhu shares insights from "Structural Basis of HPA-1 a Alloimmunization in FNAIT and Allosteric Regulation of Integrin Conformation" where they probed the structure-function relationships underpinning interactions of alloantibodies against the most common target, human platelet antigen 1a (HPA-1a). Their data can help explain why some alloantibodies cause severe hemorrhagic FNAIT while others result in milder, asymptomatic thrombocytopenia.

The C919, China's domestically developed narrowbody passenger jet, will begin its first scheduled international commercial service next month, a step industry experts said will test the aircraft's ability to operate beyond domestic markets and help build confidence for wider overseas expansion.中国自主研发的窄体客机C919将于下月开启首条国际定期商业航线。业内专家表示，此举将检验该机境外运营能力，也有助于为后续更大规模海外拓展积累信心。The daily round-trip service, operated by Air China, will connect Beijing Capital International Airport and Ulaanbaatar's Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Mongolia from Aug 12, the airline said.国航方面透露，这条每日往返航线将于8月12日起通航，往返北京首都国际机场与蒙古国乌兰巴托成吉思汗国际机场。According to the schedule, outbound flight CA723 will depart Beijing at 3 pm Beijing time and arrive in Ulaanbaatar at 5:15 pm local time. The return flight, CA724, will leave Ulaanbaatar at 6:30 pm local time and arrive in Beijing at 8:35 pm Beijing time.根据航班计划，出境航班CA723北京时间15时从北京起飞，当地时间17时15分抵达乌兰巴托；返程航班CA724当地时间18时30分从乌兰巴托起飞，北京时间20时35分落地北京。The route marks the first time the C919, manufactured by Commercial Aircraft Corp of China, will enter a regular international commercial passenger aviation market.该航线是中国商飞制造的C919客机首次投入常态化国际客运商业运营。Previously, the aircraft has operated mainly on Chinese mainland routes, as well as services connecting the mainland with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Four distinct generations of stars have been identified within Terzan 5, formed 12.5 billion, 4.7 billion, 3.8 billion, and 2.5 billion years ago. Unlike a typical globular cluster with a single ancient stellar population, Terzan 5 repeatedly formed new stars by retaining the gas and heavy elements expelled by its own supernovae. HD 80606 b is a gas giant four times the mass of Jupiter on a highly elliptical 111-day orbit. The JWST study — led by Tiffany Kataria of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory — also detected specific atmospheric chemical signatures including methane and carbon dioxide, enabling detailed study of how the planet's chemistry shifts under extreme heating. NASA contracted Katalyst Space Technologies in September 2025 to build and launch a robotic servicing spacecraft — called LINK — to boost Swift to a higher orbit. China's space agency has released no official updates. Kamoʻoalewa is a 40–100 metre quasi-satellite of Earth, orbiting the Sun in a path that keeps it perpetually near our planet. Its reflectance spectrum resembles weathered lunar rock, fuelling a theory that it is a fragment blasted from the Moon by an ancient impact — though a competing theory holds that it is an ordinary inner asteroid belt migrant. One star is enriched in elements characteristic of rocky planetary material — including iron, silicon, and magnesium — while its companion is not. Because binary stars form from the same gas cloud and should have identical initial compositions, this difference is interpreted as evidence that one star subsequently ingested at least one planet. Introduction to the Solution Keeping buildings cool is becoming one of our fastest growing and energy-intensive challenges. A startup based in Hong Kong pioneers for an answer already existing in nature– the outer layer of a tiny ant that survives one of the hottest places on Earth. Dr. Martin Zhu and his co-founder mimicked the heat-repelling biology of the Saharan silver ant to develop cooling technology that remains electricity-free. Background: From the Saharan Silver Ant to Zero-Energy Cooling Cooling maintains around 10% of global electricity demand. In the hottest regions, cooling can account for over 70% of peak electricity demand. The biological inspiration behind i2Cool's technology, the Saharan silver ant, has evolved to be a solution in the transition to zero-energy cooling. The ant endures desert heat through its surface hairs with a distinctive structure that reflects solar energy and emits body heat as radiation in a specific wavelength range. This wavelength passes through the atmosphere into outer space, effectively cooling the ant without any energy input. The team replicates this using engineered nanoparticles embedded in various materials, like paint coatings, window films, ceramics, and textiles. The i2Cool's research team integrated this heat transfer principle to produce a multi-component and multi-scale solution, efficient in solar reflectivity and mid-infared emissivity of up to 95%. Advantages The most significant advantage of passive radiative cooling is that it requires no energy input, unlike traditional air conditioning. This technology can reduce surface temperature up to 42 ℃ and save air conditioning energy consumption by up to 40%. In addition, since this solution is passive, requiring no electricity to run, the technology can be used off-grid or in energy-poor areas. This means the technology has the potential to democratize access to cooling in the regions of the world that need it most, but currently have the least access. Drawbacks and Critiques A constraint of passive radiative cooling is that the material may need to be redesigned for different climates, as Dr. Zhu acknowledges. Temperature swings and humidity in different regions require different nanoparticle structures, which is costly to implement and adjust for. This may be fine in areas near the equator where cooling demand is relatively consistent, but in seasonal climates like Russia, Canada, or the U.S., radiative cooling solutions run the risk of overcooling. Another drawback could be the varying and longer payback times from saved energy costs that has the potential to deter building owners from using the technology. For example, vehicle payback is under six months, while building applications take two to three years. This has the potential to deter building owners from using the technology. "Bunnylovr" is a 2025 American drama film written, directed by, and starring Katarina Zhu. The film follows a Chinese-American cam girl who navigates a toxic client relationship while reconnecting with her dying father. Alongside Zhu, Rachel Sennott, Austin Amelio, Perry Yung, and Jack Kilmer star in supporting roles.
