Established 1984 Podcast- Episode 49 (Sacrifice) by Brandon Kolby Jacobs
It goes without saying to anyone who ever knew Toya and I when we were running together that there was no more dynamic duo than the two of us. For almost 4yrs Toya and I were inseparable... but then one day, Toya chose to leave. Toya and I wouldn't speak again for almost 10yrs and recently we hashed out some of our differences and I apologized to her for mistakes I made with regard to not being the "big brother" she deserved. For the first time in 10yrs, Toya and I sat down and talked about our personal and professional relationships, where things went wrong and how we've gotten to where we are today. If you want to know the rise and fall of New Blood Entertainment, no one knows the story better than Toya... she lived all of it. This was a very emotional episode for the both of us... I hope you all enjoy it.
Brandon is back with episode 47 after a really long hiatus and we think this will be one you'll all enjoy. Discussing where he's at in his life, Brandon talks about walking in the purpose that God has for your life and briefly talks about the future of the podcast. You've been asking where he's been and now he's here to tell you! Enjoy!
President Delaney is an exceptional man and the sort of person I don't think most folks would end up being an episode for the podcast. But President Delaney and I had a conference call scheduled and I asked him if I could record it so that I could get the information out to the alumni base without having to transcribe it and this format was the best format I had available. If you've had questions regarding the status of race relations at UNF, this is the episode you want to check out. Feel free to drop a note in the comments below. Enjoy!
So I'd be remiss if I didn't take some time out to discuss the current climate at UNF. So here are my thoughts. Feel free to discuss in the comments.
Had to let em' know I GOT BOND MONEY! LOL... Okay, so I've been gone for a minute and in that time I got picked up by Leon County and the Florida Highway Patrol on my way into Florida. Find out the details and what I've been up to on this episode of Est. 1984! Enjoy!
Just got back in the country and had to get this one off. You guys already know what this is about... enjoy.
So I was watching the Insecure finale and something just came to my mind... something I found to be tremendously important to share... and so I did. Look, some folks might not like it, but some folks might... either way my thoughts are out there. SPOILER ALERT IN MAJOR EFFECT!!! Enjoy guys!
Figured it would be a good idea to get an episode in before leaving for Japan at the end of the month. No interviews this time guys. Thus the title "No Features"... Enjoy!
So there had been a bunch of stuff I hadn't spoken on and well... I decided to speak my mind. I'm sure someone will have a problem with it, so here we go... Enjoy!
Bae turned 44 today, so I had to say happy birthday to my boo...lol.
Regarded in the field of music as one of the greatest chorus directors and influential music minds of the last 25yrs, John Larsen (or "Dad" to many of his students) is an exceptional mind. Responsible for shaping the musical infancy of some of the greatest voices to come out of Jacksonville, FL., the music scene as we know it would not exist in the manner in which it exist without John. Some of your favorite music promoters, producers, DJs, rappers, jazz singers, gospel singers, and musical educators have all sat under the learning tree of Mr. Larsen and I was privileged to get a chance to sit down and catch up with him before he starts off his new school year. We talk about everything from growing up in Jacksonville, choosing to attend JU, how he got into teaching at First Coast High, why he left First Coast and how many more years he has left before he rides off into the sunset. I really enjoyed this episode and I hope you all do too!
Manny is without question, one of the great hip hop influencers of the last 30yrs... not even up for debate. But that being said, many folks in circles outside of the industry may not be aware of just how far reaching his influence goes. From Uptown Records with Sean "P. Diddy" Combs (who he also went to highschool with), his time working on 106 & Park and his massive impact on what the entertainment industry now refers to as "guerilla street marketing," you can't work in the hip hop industry without coming across someone who knows Manny. I had a great time sitting down with Manny (who can TALK)and I think you guys will learn a lot from this episode. Enjoy!
Inspired by my a blog post made by my sister Kandice Jacobs-Armstrong, I finally felt comfortable enough to articulate my feelings in a way that doing so publicly didn't make me feel ashamed. Someone else is facing the very same challenges and even with that aside, my daddy needs to know that we love him, we appreciate him and regardless of any circumstances his children have his back. So this one is dedicated to daddy, Willie B. Jacobs... the greatest man I've ever known.
Sorry for the delay, but wanted to keep coming with consistent QUALITY content and I felt it only right to take it back to the streets and show love to a member of my generation in the Duval entertainment scene with Supa Chino. When you listen to Chino talk, you get a real sense of where he's from and his credibility shines through. I don't hold back and I made sure to ask the questions I know you all were wondering about Chino's history, while at the same time learning some things about his career that I didn't know. Enjoy guys!
When you talk about the hip hop industry people often immediately think about a career as a rapper, DJ or a promoter. But the industry of hip hop has transcended far beyond just those few career paths and Terrence Tyson is a man known for blazing a unique path as a professional hip hop photographer. I had a great time sitting down with Terrence to talk about his time in the industry, his choice to attend BCU (should've went to FAMU...lol), meeting Julia Beverly for the first time, his relationship with Malik Abdul and so much more! Grand Prix is going to love this episode! Someone tag him please! LOL. Enjoy guys!
Big Bodie doesn't like being called a legend, but he is. His impact on the Duval hip hop scene and really music in general will echo throughout history and it was one of my great privileges to have him on the podcast. We cover a great deal in this episode from his time coming up in Duval, to how he linked with the Runnings, his perception on today's artists coming out of the city and so much more. Be warned, Bodie controlled this conversation, so I could only act as the one to bring the wheel back straight when we got too far off track, but Bodie made sure to say whatever he had to say... unfiltered and blood raw. Enjoy!
Our city lost one of its greatest influencers... and I lost a mentor and a big brother. D. Wash, I wouldn't be the man I am today and none of what I earned as a member of our community would have been possible without you. So I felt it only right to take a moment to pay my respects to a Duval County legend. I'll see you on the other side big bro. Keep a bottle on ice for me with a nice cigar...
I must admit, I was unsure of what we would talk about when I first sat down with Tokyo Jetz, but once I was able to get the conversation rolling I found her to be terribly sweet and completely engaging. Tokyo has had a rise to fame that very few ever experience and she's very candid about how her career started and how initially, she wasn't as passionate about being apart of the music industry as she is now. One of the shorter episodes, but definitely entertaining... especially when she talks about talking to TI for the first time and when she shuts me down on one question in particular...lol. Enjoy yall...
I don't think there are many people quite like Young Cash. When you sit down and talk to him, there's a level of honesty and transparency that I think very few artist possess when you talk to them about their careers. After finally getting enough of his time to do a complete episode, Cash and I sat down and chopped it up while he was driving to New Orleans to do what he does best... work on music. We talked about everything from him growing up in Jacksonville, going to college to play basketball, his rise in music and yes, we do cover the federal indictment. Cash was completely honest about everything and I enjoyed getting a chance to catch up with one of Duval County's favorite sons. Just press play and enjoy!
Probably the biggest episode of Est. 1984 that I've ever done. If you don't know who Wendy Day is I don't know what the fuck you're doing with your life... I really don't. Wendy is one of the single biggest influencers in hop hop HISTORY (yes, like in the history of everdom). She's either played a part in or be the pivotal part of deals for numerous independent labels and is most notable for her contributions to securing the now legendary 80/20 deal for Cash Money Records in the late 1990s. I got a chance to sit down with one of my idols and just listen to her educate me. You don't hear me say much on this episode because when you're in the presence of greatness you learn to be silent. Just press play and enjoy because I surely did!
I've been waiting to do this episode since... well probably since I was a kid in the music industry. Thrill Da Playa (known for being a member of 69 Boyz, but has accomplished so much more) for me is an icon in the same way Bigga Rankin was an icon for me as a kid aspiring to be in the music industry. I had a blast sitting down learning more about his career. Hopefully you guys will learn a thing or two about this hip hop legend and why his impact is so far reaching. Enjoy!
In life there are people who pretend they're fly niggas... and then there's J. Pimp. J. Pimp has lived the life I think all of us would love to live... the sort of life where you remain positive, you work hard and the greatness of what life can be just sort of happens for you. A great human being and an ambassador for the Jacksonville Hip Hop community, the role J. Pimp has played in chronicling the history of hip hop can't go unnoticed and I got a chance to sit down and chat with him. Enjoy!
This is quite possibly the most personal (and longest) podcast I'll ever do. Inspired from the story telling of Hasan Minhaj's recent stand up performance, it isn't necessary a comedy show, but a performance piece that showcases a portion of my life. Some of it is funny, some of it is sad... but through it all I really think its realness shines through. Listen, comment and enjoy.
Leaving the industry in 2013 for a variety of reasons, I finally got a chance to catch up with DJ D-Money to talk about his career, his rise to fame, his relationship with Point Blank Entertainment (specifically Ivory) and how drugs and alcohol abuse played a part in it call coming to a sudden end. It's a as much a tail of success as it is a cautionary tale of how things can change in an instant. Enjoy!
It took me awhile to get around to it, but I finally got my good friend Qualaam Waters on the podcast. Q is a legend in the Jacksonville music scene and his impact is so massive that it can't be ignored. We won't get to everything on this episode because... well there's too much to covers. But if you're interested in learning about the history of hip hop in Jacksonville and even the role that Thrill Da Playa plays in the history of both the 69 Boyz and 95 South this is the podcast for you. This is another long one folks, so hit the gym and press play!
This episode moves away from the typical music related topics and focuses more on something that is plaguing the black community that constantly goes unaddressed, mental health. With it being Mental Health Month, I wanted to take some time out to discuss suicide and mental health in the black community and got to do it with my friend Tamara L. McKenzie. Press play and maybe you'll learn something...
Just because it's Mother's Day... If you've gotta a momma, grab some tissues and press play...
The streets have been asking for this for over 12yrs and it's finally happened. The "beef" finally comes to a head it was is without question the most legendary (and longest) episode to date. Ivory Orr AKA C.E.O. and Brandon Kolby Jacobs AKA Boss Hogg finally square off on the podcast. I think we both shot straight to each other, Ivory gave some real perspective on his approach to business and yes... he does respond to the comments made by DJ 151. Additionally, you'll learn about how his mind works, he acknowledges struggling with letting people know how much he appreciates them, and yes we get into our "longstanding beef." It's the longest and most greatest podcast in #est1984podcast history... and its sprinkled with Point Blank Sauce...lol. Enjoy!
And finally the man who I think a lot of the listeners have been waiting to hear from... DJ 151 is finally on the podcast!!! 151 responds to comments made by DJ Byrd about his departure from Point Blank, he discusses his POV on the comments made by DJ Pretty Ricky and he even takes some time to talk about his relationship with Ivory Orr. If you're interested in Jacksonville music/entertainment history this is a can't miss episode. Sorry it's so ratchet by the way... we both had to put each other on hold in this episode (a show first!). Enjoy!
I discovered this audio from a 2010 Interview I did with Swordz and was amazed at how it still held up. This interview was done after Swordz had taken some time away from the industry and actually was his first interview in several years. It was broken into three parts in 2010 because... well... youtube was trippin back then, so it will take up Episodes 17, 18, and 19 on the podcast. I think you'll definitely enjoy this...

After almost 13yrs, Byrd Sanchez and I get to sit down and talk. We'll go over a little bit of everything from his rise into the position of head DJ for Point Blank Entertainment, to the departure of company staples DJ 151 and DJ D-Money and we'll even talk about the impact Ivory has had on his career. Byrd is a very honest guy and I think you all will really enjoy this episode!
Ty Sheeks is quickly becoming a staple in that Jacksonville radio scene and her work ethic is without competition. Today we sit down with the up and coming star to talk about her position in Jacksonville radio, how she got into her role, and some of the challenges she faces as a female in the radio industry.
Brandon has finally gotten DJ Cap on the podcast and in typical Cap fashion, he keeps it all the way real. If you liked the episode with DJ Pretty Ricky, you'll love this one. And yeah... no chance we're ever getting Bigga on the podcast now...lol
This episode is a class in "The Art of the Radio Hustle" with one of the youngest program directors in the iHeart Radio family and her name is Ashlee Young. She'll tell the story of moving across country from Washington (yes the state) to Jacksonville, FL, breaking into the radio game and how her hustle got her to where she is today. Definitely worth checking out!
Brandon returns after some time off to discuss what he's been up to while he was away. Oh and Bigga is probably gonna be mad at him again because he talks about the Diamond Awards and his experience with them...
One of the people I've admired the most in the Jacksonville music scene is Genedotcom because he's so terribly nice. Gene, was kind enough to get on this episode and provide some game to people on what it's like behind the mic in radio. He'll talk about his experiences growing up in the 80s, getting on radio in the 90s, moving into sales and even being fired from the iHeartMedia before eventually being brought back. Gene has an amazing store and a wealth of knowledge and this was just a great episode! BrandonKolbyJacobs@gmail.com IG: @BrandonKolbyJacobs SC: @BKJest1984 Genedot10@Yahoo com IG: @GeneDotCom
In lieu of our upcoming political transition, I thought it important to speak on how I feel about Obama and his legacy and properly thank the man who gave so many the sort of hope that I think we have often taken for granted. No guests today, but I think this will be an episode you'll enjoy... BrandonKolbyJacobs@gmail.com IG: @BrandonKolbyJacobs SC: @BKJest1984
This was the first episode without a guest and was inspired by Marisa Mendez's podcast, "Marisa Explains It All," where they discussed the process of running your race and never letter people distract you from your purpose and what's meant for you. Feel free to provide some feedback... BrandonKolbyJacobs@gmail.com IG: @BrandonKolbyJacobs SC: @BKJest1984
Toriono Newkirk AKA Shot Out has been a staple in the Jacksonville music scene for over 20yrs. Know as Mr. Jacksonville to some and the first man in Jacksonville to make public his issues with Bigga Rankin to others, Shot Out has a diverse story to tell. Today on the podcast he'll talk about growing up around the Jackson Family (yes, like Michael, Tito and Jermaine Jackson), his formative years and how music shaped him, being an original Cool Runnings member and the current status of his relationship with Mr. Cool Runnings himself, Bigga Rankin... Oh, and he'll tell the story about Bigga wanting to him me with a bottle in Kartouche...lol. This is a lengthy and loaded episode of Est. 1984 that you have to check out!
On this Seventh Episode of Established 1984 I have my friend Damon Downen on the podcast! Damon has been a diverse character in the framework of the Jacksonville music scene and often isn't as credited for his contributions as perhaps he should be. Today we get a chance to sit down, reflect on his time with New Blood Entertainment and also talk a little bit about his current involvement with the Stoners Lane Lifestyle Brand. Damon Downen- IG: @whytestakks Brandon Kolby Jacobs Email: BrandonKolbyJacobs@gmail.com IG: @BrandonKolbyJacobs SC: @BKJest1984
Pretty Ricky Da Great is a staple in the Duval community. And much like me, we share a divisiveness to our personality. Those who love us LOVE US and those who hate us HATE US. Ricky joins me on the podcast today to talk about his rise from Boyz of Poison member to becoming one the biggest DJs in FL. Oh and he talks about getting arrested, a tussle with Ivory Orr and expresses his passion for why, "these old niggas gotta go!" It's a raw episode that will probably have you rolling by the end... On Episode 5 I have one of the great generational rappers in Duval County... BALIZE IS ON THE PODCAST! And in typical Balize fashion, he keeps it real and he keeps it street! He talks about everything from growing up in Duval, not being well received initially because his sound didn't seem "southern" enough, he talks about working with Bigga Rankin and so much more. Make sure you check out his new mixtape too... https://spinrilla.com/mixtapes/balize-under-the-mattress IG- @balizeonline SC- @balizeonline BrandonKolbyJacobs@gmail.com IG- @brandonkolbyjacobs SC- @bkjest1984
On this episode of THE Established 1984 Podcast I talk about my Top 10 Duval County Mixtapes of ALL TIME. I'm sure this will get some folks talking and debating, but I'm excited to bring this to you all... BrandonKolbyJacobs@gmail.com IG: @brandonkolbyjacobs SC: @BKJest1984
On the third episode and for the first time in over a year, New Blood Entertainment and W.A.T.S., LLC founders Pat Benoit, Rodger Reiter and Brandon Kolby Jacobs are together to talk about their history in the industry, the company's impact, its eventual rise to success and what they're doing now. They cover all sorts of topics and even tell the story about the gun and the tow truck! This is another great episode you'll definitely want to check out!
On the second episode we have the Duval Entrepreneur, @grandprixmusic (President of @backdoormusic and member of #kappaalphapsi) on the show to talk about working with New Blood Entertainment in the mid 00s, his experience as an artist and what he's doing now while working with @prettyricky_bdm and @trapbeckham (newly signed Def Jam artist). There's some hilarious moments in this episode and I can't wait for you all to hear it! #industryleaders #mrbamitgirl #est1984podcast #brandonkolbyjacobs #bkjest1984 #podcast #music #entertainment
On the first episode of "THE Established 1984 Podcast" is a music industry LEGEND who is a staple to some and someone others may not know had the impact he's had. @keithk926 is an influencer in every way possible and he discusses a variety of topics. From his life growing up in Duval, becoming a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the building and eventual departure from @tjsdjs and his current role as a community leader through his consulting company. Did I mention he's also doing amazing work with the legendary @djlilboy from Nappy Boy Entertainment fame!? This is a can't miss episode... and IT'S THE FIRST EPISODE!
