Actor Morris Chestnut joined the show to reflect on his remarkable career journey, beginning with his breakthrough role in the iconic 1991 film "Boyz n the Hood." Chestnut shared how that film launched his career and continues to impact audiences decades later, recounting a touching moment when a co-star on "Rosewood" watched the movie for the first time and was so emotionally moved by his character's death scene that she remained affected throughout the entire workday. The enduring resonance of the film, which authentically portrayed life in certain neighborhoods during that era, stands as a testament to its cultural significance and Chestnut's powerful performance. This first major break, which came after he had done a television adaptation of "A Night on the Town" that earned him his SAG card, set the foundation for a successful career spanning over three decades.Currently starring in the second season of Fox TV's "Rosewood," Chestnut plays a private pathologist who cleverly bends—but doesn't break—the rules to solve crimes and achieve justice. Working alongside the talented Lorraine Toussaint, whom he praised effusively as an amazing actress who elevates every scene, Chestnut described how his character has evolved over the show's 22-episode seasons. Initially prone to breaking rules and sticking out "like a sore thumb" at crime scenes, Rosewood has learned to blend more seamlessly with the police department while maintaining his characteristically optimistic view of people. However, recent storylines have challenged that optimism, particularly an episode where a woman he believed loved him actually robbed him, forcing his character to develop a more nuanced perspective on trust and human nature. Chestnut emphasized the importance of social media in modern entertainment, noting how he actively engages with fans across Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, recognizing that direct interaction has become an essential part of an actor's career in today's digital landscape.

Second verse….just like the first! BAM! … Another Double Movie Review! The Boyz loved the last double feature movie review so they decided to do it ALL OVER AGAIN! First up, kinetic visualist @edgarwright brings us the second adaption of “The Running Man”. Written by Stephen King (under a pseudonym of Richard Bachman) and famously adapted in 1987 to the screen starring one Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cupcake and WillDaBeast answer the question on everyone's mind: Not “Is Glen Powell STILL a thing?” but “Is this true-to-story adaptation better than AH'nuld's”? Next: The director of the smashing successful Neon releases “LongLegs” and “The Monkey” returns with the folk horror chamberpiece (Editor's note: Can we ban this term from the show? Dislike!). Standout actors Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland act in a slow-burn horror Grimm Fairy Tale-esque thriller. But are all the “WTF”s and mystery imagery shenanigans worth the punchline? Maaayyyybe….Oz and Neon need a time out. WS+....It's us with a double feature. GET INTO IT! In this week’s episode of Dem Vinyl Boyz, we’re diving into the thrash metal battleground with Megadeth’s explosive fourth album, Rust in Peace. Released on September 24, 1990, this record not only cemented Megadeth’s legacy as one of the "Big Four" of thrash (alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax), but it also pushed the genre into technically masterful and politically charged territory. This was Dave Mustaine’s first album featuring lead guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza, forming what many consider the band’s ultimate lineup. From the opening riff of "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" to the laser-precise fretwork on "Hangar 18," Rust in Peace is a relentless assault of speed, complexity, and precision. Mustaine’s songwriting balances anti-war themes, conspiracy theories, and dystopian visions — and wraps them in some of the most intricate metal arrangements ever pressed to wax. The album received widespread critical acclaim and is now regarded as a cornerstone of thrash metal, earning Grammy nominations and spots on numerous “greatest albums” lists. It’s a record that influenced not just metalheads, but also shaped the evolution of progressive and technical metal for decades to come. Whether you’re a longtime fan or experiencing it for the first time, Rust in Peace is more than an album — it’s a mission statement from a band firing on all cylinders and changing the game in the process.
Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decisionmaking process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 122 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the first film in their Hughes Brothers series, Menace II Society (1993). Leaving the world of Ozu, the boys return to a more contemporary setting by explore the films of Allen and Albert Hughes, identical twin brothers who became known for their bold music videos in the late 1980s, early 1990s for artists like Tone Loc and Tupac Shakur. But it was their first feature, Menace II Society, that took the world by storm as it followed the life young black men in LA trying to making it out the neighborhood they lived in, surrounded by the accepted violence that's systemic, perpetrated by a country willing to allow this section of the world fall apart from within. Released a few years after Boyz in the Hood, this is a sharper, edgier, meaner, realist look at the Watts and Crenshaw neighborhoods that we've ever seen before on screen, introducing the world to a duo of vital voices in cinema. Ryan and Jay break down their thoughts on the film, it's comparisons to other African American coming of age films made in the early 1990s, the violence found within the film, the strong directorial voices found within this debut feature, the strong cast that make up the film, and their relationship with the directors and their filmography. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube and more. This podcast runs 1h53m.
