“Either they don't know, don't show... or don't care about what's going on in the hood.” Join Ian, Liam, Kev & Megs for our 341st episode as we head to South Central Los Angeles for John Singleton's astonishing directorial debut, Boyz n the Hood (1991). Hailed as one of the defining films of the 1990s, we explore a coming-of-age story that remains as powerful, relevant, and heartbreaking today as it was over thirty years ago. This week we discuss: John Singleton's remarkable debut — just 23 years old when he directed the film. How did a first-time filmmaker produce one of the most confident American dramas of its generation? The opening statistics — the film begins with a stark warning about violence affecting young Black men. We explore the context behind those figures, how they reflected America in the early '90s, and how the picture has changed over the decades. Larry Fishburne's Furious Styles — one of cinema's greatest fathers? We discuss why his guidance remains one of the film's emotional anchors. Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut — three young men whose futures are shaped by environment, opportunity, and the choices they make. Ian breaks down the screenplay — how Singleton balances social commentary with intimate character work, allowing the message to emerge naturally from the lives of its characters. Liam explores the film's central question — to what extent are our lives determined by circumstance, and how much agency do we truly have to change our future? Megs examines the women of Boyz n the Hood — what role do they play within the story, and how effectively does the film portray the different pressures facing young women in the same community? Kev looks at the film's legacy — how Boyz n the Hood influenced generations of filmmakers, from its storytelling to its uncompromising realism. The "show versus tell" balance — despite its powerful message, does the film avoid becoming preachy by grounding every social issue in believable human relationships? The ending — devastating, inevitable, hopeful, or all three? We discuss one of the most emotionally resonant conclusions in modern American cinema. And finally, whether Boyz n the Hood is the Best Film Ever — or simply one of the most important films ever made about growing up, community, and the cycles that shape our lives. Every so often, a conversation cuts through the noise and gets to the heart of what education leadership demands right now. This is one of those conversations. In this episode, Dr. Michael T. Conner is joined by Dr. Rick Fernandez, former superintendent, former high school principal, Chief Growth Officer at BlueKit Software, and co-host of the Boyz of EdTech podcast, for a powerful discussion on leadership, data, competition, and the future of learning.Dr. Fernandez brings a grounded, unfiltered perspective on the realities facing school districts today. From the pressure of school choice and vouchers to the blind spots hidden inside district data, he challenges leaders to think more honestly about what their systems know, what they assume, and what families are really asking for. This is not a surface-level conversation about trends. It is a call for sharper thinking, stronger systems, and a deeper commitment to preparing students for a future already being reshaped by artificial intelligence. Dr. Conner and Dr. Fernandez move with urgency, humor, and candor through the kinds of questions education leaders cannot afford to avoid. If you are a superintendent, principal, district leader, educator, or anyone invested in the future of public education, this episode will push your thinking and leave you with plenty to sit with.Dr. Fernandez's challenge for the next generation comes down to three words: curiosity, consistency, and entrepreneurship.

Hate Speech in Reinform. Wahnsinn. Dass sich Andi und Ralle dadurch nicht in ihrer Gangart verändern werden, ist eine klare Sache. Gerade solche Folgen machen das Podcasten so wertvoll. Bleibt easy und standhaft! Eure Boyz

The Addison Heimann directed psychosexual thriller debuted January 2025 at Sundance. With its attractive cast (Olivia Taylor Dudley, a fiery Jordan Garvaris, a studly and nude Lou Taylor Pucci) and impressive cinematography, could the film's abuse and trauma mixed with Adult Swim humor and weirdo non-sequitors and tentacle sex (yes….Hentai-esque tentacle sex) have been too much for distributors? For the first time in the New High Hammock Think Hole, Jonny joins Mark in person for an extra special double episode discussion of "Dan Da Dan". This week the Boyz are discussing episodes 17 "We Can All Stay There Together" and 18, "We Became a Family".
We welcomed author and journalist Thomas Golianopoulos to the studio to talk Singleton's sophomore effort, Poetic Justice (1993) and Golianopoulos' biographical work, The Life of Singleton: From Boyz in the Hood to Snowfall. After exploding on to the scene with his directorial debut, Boyz in the Hood (1991`), John Singleton approached his second film with new perspective on a familiar setting — South Central LA through the eyes of Justice, a young salon worker grieving the death of her boyfriend. In this episode we discuss how Thomas researched the Singleton's professional and personal life, his inspiration and process, the tension on set between Janet and Tupac, and how the world reacted to this Poetic Justice as the next step in Singleton's career. Our recommendations: Baby Boy (2001), Rye Lane (2023) Buy The Life of Singleton here: https://www.amazon.com/Life-Singleton-Boyz-Hood-Snowfall/dp/1368095941 For more on Thomas and his work, follow him on IG @golianopoulos or visit: https://golianopoulos.com/ Support the show with a Ko-fi! ko-fi.com/blackgirlfilmclub Check out the rest of our socials at linktr.ee/blackgirlfilmclub

On this episode of Only Bourbon Fans, we sit down with Nicky B and Geoffrey from Tampa Bay Bourbon Boyz for a blind tasting lineup put together by Nicky. The challenge? Taste, rank, debate, and try to identify each pour before the bottles are revealed. The lineup features a mix of established favorites and some newer names that have been generating buzz in bourbon circles, including Old Hoffman, Red Top Rye, and Kentucky Nectar from Old Commonwealth Distillery. As the rankings come together, a few surprises emerge—including one bottle that may have finished ahead of a true unicorn from the Pappy Van Winkle lineup. With plenty of laughs, spirited debate, and a few shocking reveals, this episode is a reminder that labels, price tags, and hype disappear in a blind tasting. All that matters is what's in the glass.Grab a pour and join us for one of our most entertaining blind tastings yet.

Happy Thursday you pop culture junkies! This week, we are kicking things off with a little walk down memory lane in honor of Memorial Day—reminiscing about the good old days spent getting ready for poker at the iconic All Things D conference (which later became the Code Conference). Then, we dive straight into the meme of the moment: NBC reporter Julie Tsirkin, who went massively viral after being caught on camera asking, "What was that?" during a security incident near the White House. We break down the internet's hilarious reactions and how she flawlessly leaned into the viral fame. Plus, we look at the latest TikTok obsession—the "saxophone getting louder" trend—and trace its unexpected origins all the way back to the 1991 classic film Boyz n the Hood. Finally, we chat briefly about the current state of AI photos before obsessing over the best thing on TV right now: Netflix's The Boroughs. Think Golden Girls meets Stranger Things—trust us, you don't want to miss this! This week's newsletter: https://popculturemondays.com/2026/05/26/what-was-that/

Obsession (2025) | Does Curry Barker's Divisive Horror Live Up to the Hype? ft. Raiders of the Podcast & EF ContentmentJose (Cupcake) and Mike (WillDaBeast) bring back two beloved pod guests — Kevin from Raiders of the Podcast and E.f. Contentment — for a spoiler-free review of Obsession (2025), the polarizing TIFF sensation from YouTube filmmaker Curry Barker, now distributed by Blumhouse.Part Gen Z Fatal Attraction, part Ari Aster descent-into-dread, Obsession arrives loaded with hype, and the crew debates whether it earns every bit of it. Starring Michael Johnston and a star-making Indy Navarrete, this is a horror film with layers: a monkey's paw premise modernized into something raw, uncomfortable, and genuinely hard to shake. Imagine Hereditary meets May meets Fresh — and you're still not quite there. The Boyz cover Barker's origin story (including his debut $800 found footage film Milk & Serial), the film's consent and mental health subtext, and whether Indy Navarrete is the next Mia Goth.
