We're checking in this week with a classic sports film about what we hope to see in international competitions: pride, power, and a bad mothah who don't take nothing from no one! We're talking about the Jamaican bobsled team in Cool Runnings, a fictional story based on the real 1988 debut of this team. We have Derice, the driver, Junior (rich kid) the first middle, Yul Brenner (not the actor) the second middle, and Sanka, the brakes (best push-car driver). Together they learn about ice, breath condensation, and the electric slide. The Winter Olympics kicked off in Calgary on 13th February, 1988 - but the stand-out stars of the event did not qualify for a medal. Rather, the four-man Jamaican Bobsled team - who would later become (unreliably) immortalised in the Disney comedy ‘Cool Runnings' - became a testament to the intersection of determination, investment, and sporting excellence. The brainchild of Americans George Fitch and William Maloney, the concept was influenced by Jamaica's annual Pushcart Derby, and supported in part by the Tourist Board. Participants, including helicopter pilot Dudley Stokes, were recruited via the pair's connections to the Jamaican military. The XXV Winter Olympic Games are underway in Milan, Italy and I couldn't be happier. I love the Olympics. I'll admit, the Summer Games are my favorite, but growing up in the frozen tundra of the Midwest gave me a soft spot for nearly every Winter event. So, while Team USA fights for gold, I figured: what better way to get into the Olympic spirit than by watching some great movies inspired by the Winter Games? Each of these films highlights the grind to reach the Olympics and the agony and ecstasy of chasing greatness. Downhill Racer (1969)We begin on the slopes with Downhill Racer, a character‑driven drama following American skier David Chappellet, a talented athlete desperate to earn his spot on the U.S. Olympic Ski Team. As he competes across Europe, David's single‑minded obsession puts him at odds with teammates and coaches, but no one can deny his raw ability.What makes Downhill Racer special is the realism and the psychology of ambition. The ski sequences are exhilarating, especially the first‑person shots barreling down European slopes. Those sequences alone are worth watching.It's a portrait of the cost of obsession and how the Olympic dream can consume a person. The Cutting Edge (1992)The Cutting Edge gives us a nice blend of rom‑com energy and Olympic ambition.The movie opens at the 1988 Winter Olympics, where both main characters suffer devastating losses. Hockey star Doug Dorsey takes a blow to the head that ends his career. Figure skater Kate Moseley is dropped by her skating partner, ending her gold‑medal hopes.Two years later, training for the 1992 Games, Kate and Doug team up out of necessity and desperation. Hello and welcome to our latest weekly episode where this week we are discussing sport based movies we have watched... the good, the bad and the outright ugly of the genre. We talk Space Jam to Cool Runnings and Any Given Sunday to Moneyball. We hope you enjoy!

Jimmy Cliff, born James Chambers on 30 July 1944 in Somerton, St. James Parish, Jamaica, emerged from humble beginnings to become one of reggae's most beloved and influential figures. His parents worked modest jobs on a rural farm, and from a young age, Cliff showed a natural gift for singing. As a child, he sang in his church choir; by his early teens he had moved with his family to Kingston, determined to carve out a career in music. At just 14 years old, Cliff scored his first hit with the self-penned single “Hurricane Hattie”, a song that nods to his own miraculous arrival during a storm. With his early success in Jamaica, he soon caught the attention of producer Leslie Kong, whose Beverly's label would provide a platform for Cliff to record more material and refine his style. In 1965, Cliff followed an invitation from Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, to move to the United Kingdom. While in London, he experimented with combining ska, rocksteady, and soul influences, earning recognition beyond Jamaica. Over the late 1960s, he released key tracks like “Wonderful World, Beautiful People” and “Vietnam”, the latter gaining admiration for its protest message. A turning point in his career—and in the global recognition of reggae—came in 1972 with the film The Harder They Come, directed by Perry Henzell. Cliff starred as Ivan Martin, a small-time musician who is forced into a life of crime. The movie's gritty realism and its all-star soundtrack, featuring Cliff's vocals on songs such as “Many Rivers to Cross”, “Sitting in Limbo”, and the title track itself, resonated widely. The film is often credited with helping bring reggae to a wider international audience. Though Cliff continued to release music through the 1970s, he also explored his spiritual side—spending time in Africa and embracing Islam, as well as other spiritual practices. In the 1980s, he returned to a more mainstream sound and released Cliff Hanger, winning his first Grammy Award in 1985. The success continued: in 1993, his cover of Johnny Nash's “I Can See Clearly Now” for the Cool Runnings movie soundtrack became a global hit, reintroducing his voice to a new generation. Throughout his life, Cliff recorded prolifically—producing over 30 albums. His later work continued to reflect his commitment to social justice: in 2012, his album Rebirth, co-produced with Tim Armstrong of Rancid, won him another Grammy. In 2022, he released Refugees, a deeply humanitarian record inspired by global crises, which he used to voice solidarity with displaced people. Jimmy Cliff's influence extended far beyond his singing. He collaborated with a wide array of artists—from the Rolling Stones to Annie Lennox to Paul Simon—and his songs were covered by many others, underlining the universal appeal of his message. In recognition of his impact, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. In Jamaica, he was honored with the Order of Merit, one of the nation's highest accolades. On a personal level, Cliff was intensely private. He had several children, and his longtime partner, Latifa Chambers, survived him. His wife announced his passing on 24 November 2025, revealing that he died following a seizure and pneumonia. Jimmy Cliff's legacy is defined not just by his music, but by the spirit it carried: hope, resistance and unity. From his rural Jamaican beginnings to global stages, he remained true to his message and his people. In his words, he always believed in crossing to the other side—to higher ground. We meet Jamaican sprinter Derice running through town. It's November 1987, and Derice is preparing to qualify for the Olympics. He runs until he reaches the pushcart competition, where his best friend Sanka competes in the big pushcart race. Sanka crashes, but no problem—Derice keeps running.It's time for the qualifying race. Derice is the clear favorite. The top four finishers will represent Jamaica in the Olympics. Unfortunately, the runner next to him, Junior, stumbles and takes Derice down with him.Derice tries to convince the Olympic committee leader to rerun the race, but it's a no-go. On his way out, he notices a picture of his late father standing next to another man. He asks who it is, and learns that it's Irv Blitzer, a fellow gold medalist who once competed in bobsledding. Irv lives in Jamaica now, working as a bookie and living a miserable life.It takes a while, but Derice finally wears him down, and Blitzer agrees to give him a shot. They gather a group of people together, but Blitzer scares them off by showing a reel of bobsled crashes. By the time it ends, the room is empty—except for one of the other runners who fell with Junior, a grumpy guy named Yul. The problem is, there's no such thing as a three-man bobsled team. That's when Junior shows up. Yul tries to fight him when he walks in, but—like it or not—that's their squad.They get to work, and after a lot of crashing and falling, they finally manage to get into the bobsled in under six seconds.Now they need funding. After failing to land a sponsor, they try random fundraisers, but still fall short. Junior steps up and sells his fancy car to cover the rest of the costs.To Calgary they go. Blitzer registers the team and borrows a rundown bobsled from a former teammate. The Jamaicans struggle to adapt to, well, ice. Derice talks to an opponent who warns him that Blitzer is holding him back—that he hasn't been the same since he was caught cheating.Meanwhile, the other teammates get into a bar fight at a honky-tonk. Derice gives them a pep talk about locking in and focusing.It's time for qualifying, and Blitzer surprises them with their very own uniforms. They need to make it under 60 seconds—and THEY DO IT!They celebrate by painting their sled and naming it Cool Runnings. But soon after, they receive a letter: they've been disqualified. Blitzer storms into the rules committee meeting, insisting they not penalize the team for his past mistakes. After deliberation, the committee reinstates them.It's Olympic time. Back home, everyone watches as they march in the opening ceremonies. Junior's dad tries to pull him back home, but Junior stands up to him at last.The team's first run on the track is a disaster, and they finish dead last. Derice tries copying the Swiss team's methods, but Sanka pushes back—telling him they need to be themselves. On the second day, they race in their own style and finish eighth.During their final race, a loose screw causes one of the bobsled's blades to detach, sending the sled crashing and flipping over. Determined to finish, the team lifts the sled and carries it across the finish line. The crowd erupts in applause—including Junior's father.The epilogue explains that the team returned to Jamaica as heroes, and came back four years later to the Winter Olympics to compete as equals.
