Kirsten Bridegan Defied a Judge in Her Husband's Murder Case

Prosecutors handed a Duval County jury a chart on August 21 mapping every month of contact between Mario Fernandez and Henry Tenon across 2022. It starts at 26 communications in January, peaks at 37 in February, the month Jared Bridegan was ambushed in front of his toddler, and lands on zero by August. A 27-minute phone call the day after police published photos of the suspect truck sits inside that slide, and so does a factory reset that erased Fernandez's device six months after the killing. The state told jurors the reset phone never carried another Tenon message. The other half of the day happened without the jury. At 9:30 that morning, Judge London Kite stopped the trial because Jared's widow, Kirsten Bridegan, refused to surrender her own phone for extraction by Shanna Gardner's defense. The subpoena reaches her messages with Gardner's minor children, who are on the witness lists, along with a witness known in court papers as E.F. and the Justice for Jared social accounts. Kite ordered Kirsten to explain why she shouldn't be held in contempt; an appellate court froze everything by late afternoon. The victim's widow and the man accused of arranging his death spent the same day fighting over the same kind of evidence, with very different results. There's more the jury didn't see. Prosecutors auditioned a jailhouse witness who claims Fernandez called the killing his own idea, a claim the defense labeled unworthy of belief and the judge has yet to rule on. The defense also scored real points in open court, because the analyst who built the chart agreed gaps implicate no one, and $10,000 in checks between the men carried memo lines about landscaping and roof work. Fernandez says he is innocent of every allegation. The verdict may come down to how this jury reads all that silence.Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Jared Bridegan Wasn't Killed By One Person Acting Alone

The prosecution revealed that Henry Tenon was not alone the night Jared Bridegan was shot and killed on a road in Jacksonville Beach. Someone fled on foot. Someone else drove a truck away from the scene. Tenon's DNA was found on the tire placed in the road to force Bridegan to stop. But prosecutors say he didn't drive the truck. Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke take the listener questions this case is producing. Tenon confessed to the killing, took a plea deal in exchange for testimony against Mario Fernandez and Shanna Gardner, and then reversed everything — telling the judge his confession was false and demanding a trial of his own. The defense says Fernandez paid Tenon for handyman work, not murder. The prosecution says ten thousand dollars in checks went to a man whose only connection to the victim runs through the defendant. Fernandez's trial is happening now in Duval County. Gardner goes next in September. Tenon won't face a jury until 2027. Three trials, three separate juries, and three people pointing in different directions while Kirsten Bridegan — Jared's widow, who has carried this for four years — sits in the gallery and waits for the truth.END_LINKSListen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In February 2026, Henry Tenon stood in front of Judge London Kite in Duval County and said he wanted a trial. He had already confessed to killing Jared Bridegan. He had taken a deal. He had agreed to testify that Mario Fernandez and Shanna Gardner hired him to carry out the shooting. Then he took all of it back. Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke sit down with the listener questions this audience cannot stop debating. What would make a man who admitted to murder reverse course and risk life in prison? The prosecution says the only link between Tenon and Bridegan is Fernandez, and that three checks totaling ten thousand dollars prove a murder-for-hire arrangement. The defense says Tenon was a handyman who did real work at the property and showed video to prove it. A prosecution filing revealed that someone else was at the scene the night Bridegan was killed — a detail that raises questions about who else was involved and whether additional charges could follow. Jared Bridegan was shot with his two-year-old daughter in the back seat. A bullet narrowly missed her. Fernandez is on trial now. Gardner starts September 7. Tenon in 2027. Three juries will hear three different versions of the same night.END_LINKSListen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The jury in the Jared Bridegan murder trial watched a fifty-minute police interview with Mario Fernandez Saldana on Tuesday. He called the murdered father a keyboard warrior and speculated about the killing like a man discussing a stranger's misfortune. The interview was recorded before Fernandez became a suspect. He sat in a chair wearing an orange shirt and talked about Bridegan with casual contempt, the kind that only makes sense if he believed nobody would ever connect him to what happened on that Jacksonville Beach road.Day 2 in the Duval County courtroom opened with physical evidence from the murder scene. Crime scene detective Shane Jarman played his walkthrough video showing a tire placed in the road to force Bridegan out of his vehicle, shell casings on the pavement, and his body next to his SUV. DNA collected from that tire matched Henry Tenon.Surveillance footage tracked a blue Ford F-150 through Jacksonville Beach to the exact stretch where Bridegan was killed on February 16, 2022. Twenty seconds separated the truck and Bridegan's SUV in the same camera frame. Eight minutes after the shooting, the truck backed into a dead-end and a figure climbed out on foot.Defense attorney Jesse Dreicer drove a thirty-two-minute gap in the surveillance where no camera captured the truck. Lead detective Chris Johns answered with a gait comparison matching Tenon's walk to the figure on the murder scene footage.Business check stubs inside the F-150 showed ten thousand dollars paid to Tenon six weeks after the killing. The memo lines read landscaping, roof upkeep, and Kickstarter Good Luck. The money came from a company funded through the Gardner family trust, the same trust prosecutors say was the motive for murder.Tenon has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is expected to testify later in the trial.END LINKSListen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The first witness the jury heard in the Jared Bridegan murder trial wasn't a detective. It was a woman named Jonelle Cruz who found Bridegan's two-year-old daughter Bexley alone in a car seat on a dark Jacksonville Beach road, shaking and asking about her dad.Prosecutors opened Monday in a Duval County courtroom by calling the killing a targeted ambush. Mario Fernandez Saldana, a former Army drill sergeant who married Bridegan's ex-wife Shanna Gardner, is the first of three defendants to face a jury. He sat listening to the evidence without visible expression.Assistant State Attorney Christina Simak Stifler told the jury Fernandez recruited a man named Henry Tenon for the job. GPS data from a vehicle linked to Tenon showed two trips along Bridegan's exact route before the murder on February 16, 2022. A dark blue Ford F-150 with a tire in its bed was seen near the road an hour before the shooting.Stifler explained the motive: a family trust. Gardner's parents founded Stampin' Up!, a company generating hundreds of millions in annual revenue. An irrevocable trust blocked Gardner from becoming trustee while she had legal entanglements with Bridegan. As long as he was alive fighting for custody of their twins, she couldn't touch the money. After Bridegan was dead, ten thousand dollars in checks from a company funded through the trust were deposited into accounts linked to Tenon. No DNA ties him to the road. Before Mario Fernandez's murder trial begins in the Jared Bridegan case, his defense has already reshaped the field. The alleged triggerman withdrew his confession. A judge blocked testimony about a private conversation between Fernandez and his estranged wife. Prosecutors dropped two of four charges without explanation. But the state kept the financial records. Fernandez's property company issued three checks to the man prosecutors say shot Bridegan, totaling roughly $10,000 after the killing. One was a $5,000 payment dated April 4, 2022, allegedly carrying the words "Kickstarter" and "Good luck!" on the memo line. The defense argues these covered legitimate property maintenance and that no money went to the alleged gunman before the crime occurred.Phone records document 35 calls between Fernandez and the alleged shooter in February 2022, the month of the killing, with 30 more the following month. A prosecutor told the court in late July that a second individual left the scene in a pickup truck and has not been publicly identified. An inmate who spent nearly a year near Fernandez in the Duval County jail told the state that Fernandez spoke openly about the conspiracy, assigned roles to the participants, and allegedly proposed a plan to shift blame onto Jared's widow Kirsten after the inmate's release.Prosecutors say they offered the inmate no deals on his own pending case. The defense contends the state's cooperating witness was coerced into his original confession and that jailhouse informants are inherently unreliable.Fernandez denies all charges. Trial runs August 17 through 28 in Duval County. Gardner's trial is scheduled for the end of August. Tenon goes to trial in spring 2027.END_LINKSListen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Mario Fernandez's defense team in the Jared Bridegan murder case has been winning before the trial started — charges dropped, death penalty gone, a key witness blocked from the stand, and the state's cooperating gunman withdrawing his plea deal entirely. Then prosecutors pulled the financial records.Three handwritten checks from Fernandez's company to the alleged triggerman Henry Tenon total $10,000 and arrived after the murder. Two were issued on the same day in March 2022. The third, dated April 4, allegedly carried the memo "Kickstarter" and "Good luck!" on a $5,000 payment written seven weeks after Bridegan was ambushed on Sanctuary Boulevard.Fernandez's attorneys say those checks paid for landscaping and roof repairs on a rental property and that no money changed hands before the crime. Phone records showing 35 calls between Fernandez and Tenon in February 2022, 30 in March, and continued contact into June form another pillar of the state's case. At a late-July hearing, prosecutor Alan Mizrahi disclosed that two people left the crime scene the night Bridegan was killed. One fled on foot, one drove a pickup truck. Tenon's DNA was on the tire. He was not driving.A fellow inmate also alleges Fernandez described the conspiracy from inside the Duval County jail, identified his own role, named Gardner as the planner, and asked for help framing Kirsten Bridegan through letters mailed to reporters and law enforcement after release.Fernandez has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and solicitation. Jury selection began August 10 and trial is set to begin August 17. Gardner's trial follows at month's end. Tenon faces his own trial in March 2027.END_LINKSListen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Yep…I feel a way. Per usual and on brand, the people, or “community” didn't look out for me…on a simple term: to make sure I'm in places that fit me and my brand. So…Grits and Eggs Podcast came to Duval County and I tried to get media passes, and ultimately attend the event. No luck on the passes (no one answered back…from the pod to the venue, etc). No luck on buying a ticket…and to go further…no luck on my community getting me access to the event……but let me see something of worth to people. I'm on it. I'm not mad. I'm aware though. Two women strangled in two days by the same man in Jacksonville, Florida -- one killed at a motel on Christmas night, the other a beloved teacher murdered in her own home the next morning. This episode features real interrogation footage and court audio.Leah Kline's life ended on December 25, 2019. She and Zebulon Perkins had been staying at a Westside Jacksonville motel when an argument turned violent. Perkins strangled Kline and disposed of her body in a dumpster behind the building. She was 38 years old. Her remains would not be discovered for days. The following morning, December 26, Perkins drove to the Cedar Hills home of Vivian James, a 49-year-old chemistry teacher at Atlantic Coast High School. James had once been his teacher. According to court records, Perkins went to her looking for guidance -- and when James told him he needed to turn himself in to police, Perkins beat her and strangled her with a cord inside her home.Vivian James had spent years in a classroom shaping the futures of Duval County students. Colleagues and former students described her as someone who gave her time and attention freely, a teacher who saw potential where others saw problems. The fact that a former student came to her door in crisis -- and that her instinct was to counsel him toward accountability -- speaks to who she was.On December 28, a friend stopped by James' home and found her body. The friend called Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and reported James' car missing. Investigators located the vehicle at the same Westside motel where Kline had been killed. Perkins was inside. When officers searched the car, they found Perkins' bag containing sweatpants stained with James' DNA, along with her camera and three laptops. Two of James' televisions and her computer monitor were recovered from the home of Perkins' mother. DNA recovered from beneath James' fingernails matched Perkins. In March 2024, Zebulon Perkins pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 70 years in Florida State Prison. The interrogation footage played during court proceedings showed detectives confronting Perkins about the evidence against him -- a man who, according to investigators, showed no emotion when asked about either death. This episode features interrogation recordings and court audio. Across the country, low-income communities face threats of displacement, predatory investment activity and limited wealth-building opportunities. One often-overlooked contributor to these dynamics: a lack of formal estate planning. When a homeowner passes away without an estate plan, their home often becomes an “heirs' property,” a property with no clear title. Without a clear title, homeowners face immense barriers–they cannot access the equity in the home, sell the home for a fair market price, obtain loans for repairs or purchase insurance, among other challenges. For low-income families, this situation can lead to significant home value depreciation, forced sales and even homelessness. Unfortunately, heirs' properties are widespread, particularly among low-income communities. A conservative analysis estimates that heirs' properties nationwide have an assessed value of over $32 billion. If communities nationwide could identify households at risk, help address' estate planning issues and ensure clear transfers of property title, they could stabilize neighborhoods, reduce home loss and protect immense amounts of wealth for low-income residents. Fortunately, a program in Jacksonville, Florida, is showing the way. Heirs' properties are widespread in Jacksonville and the surrounding area in Duval County, with an estimated 10,000 heirs' properties in the region. Emerging from a process of deep community engagement, LISC Jacksonville launched its Heirs' Property Program in 2020 and has since engaged hundreds of households with estate planning services. In this sponsored episode produced in partnership with Results for America, learn more about the immense impact of addressing heirs' properties and how the model developed in Jacksonville might inspire your community. We are talking fraud, and the biggest frauds are Democrats. They lie, cheat, steal, and that is a part of their DNA.When they are not stealing, they are recruiting. Thomas Massie is a recruit.I've discussed a few of them individually, and we are showing you just how much fraud exists. Look at the numbers, and ask yourself how long this could go on? It's been going on for decades. When you consider all the people I've been talking about, understand there are many more. Waiting to be caught, but many not believing they ever would be caught.Meanwhile, in Duval County, Florida, the Duval Teachers United union executives—Teresa Brady and Ruby George—stole millions over a decade. Yes, ten years of “just decided to steal on a regular basis” while claiming to represent teachers. Brady received 27 months in prison, George 12 months and one day, and the judge noted the betrayal was methodical, not impulsive. This is where moral authority gets funny: people trusted them to protect salaries, pensions, and benefits—and instead, they were operating a side hustle funded by the very teachers they represented.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

"If we don't tell our stories, who will? And if they do, will they tell it right?" — This question grounds the work of Marcia Black, a powerful cultural steward who's leading the charge at Black Bottom Archives, celebrating 10 years of preserving and honoring Black Detroit's legacy. In this Detroit is Different podcast, Marcia shares how her passion was sparked by early roots in environmental justice organizing through EMEAC, where she witnessed the brilliance and resilience of Black women leading on the frontlines. That experience lit a fire, and inspired by pioneers like PG Watkins and Camille Johnson, Marcia embraced the responsibility of archiving Black life, especially the voices of Black women too often erased from historical narratives. From growing up between Detroit and Duval County, Florida, her journey is a mosaic of Black Southern and Midwestern cultural memory. Guided by the radical education at Marygrove College and the example of her entrepreneurial, Catholic, beauty-salon-owning, computer-working, reverend grandmother, Marcia now curates community through exhibits, storytelling, and cultural programming. “Black women have always been the keepers of the flame,” she says, and her work ensures that flame continues to burn bright—one story, one installation, one memory at a time. Daryl Hance is a songwriter and guitar player from Duval County, Florida, whose music has been in my life for over twenty years.  I first learned of Daryl during his time with the band Mofro, now J.J. Grey and Mofro. He hasn't been with that band for a while and since gone on to carve a handful of wonderful solo records. I've long said his guitar playing is like a fingerprint. Maybe it's the Florida boy in me. Maybe it's the country boy in me. That swampy sound so few can capture with authenticity is hyper-present in Daryl's work and I am ready for more and more.  Daryl's latest record is called “Devil's Millhopper,” it is available wherever you consume music, and you can buy a digital copy on bandcamp.com. (AURN News) — As Americans prepare to choose between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who represents Florida's 20th Congressional District, is making a final push to mobilize voters across Florida's diverse communities. "No one can afford to sit this one out," Cherfilus-McCormick discussed the stakes in an interview with AURN News. "We've seen what Project 2025 is really all about... rolling back Medicaid and Medicare Social Security, which would totally devastate our seniors," she said. The Democratic congresswoman emphasized Harris's economic proposals, particularly those addressing cost-of-living concerns. "She has a robust economic plan that deals with some of the issues that we're facing, even when it comes to grocery price gouging, when it comes to housing, building over 3 million new houses and even having the first-time down payment program giving $25,000 for new homeowners," she commented. “These are all programs that are desperately needed at this moment, and we see so many people who are actually pushing and calling for a real government that sees the people for who they are and gives us a sense of hope and ensures that everyone has the opportunity to actually have a chance at thriving in the society.” Early voting data shows varying turnout across the state's metropolitan areas. "Palm Beach County has had a great turnout. Broward County is number two," Cherfilus-McCormick reported, while expressing concern about participation in other regions. "The areas where we really need to turn out and make sure everyone's voice is heard is in Jacksonville and Duval County." The congresswoman also noted increased political engagement within Florida's Haitian-American community. “I remember at the beginning of the election, some people weren't sure who they were voting for, because at one point, Trump did come down and try to cater towards the Haitian community. But I think what was a blessing and a curse was, the comments were a curse, but it ended up being a blessing, because right now, everyone seems to be on the same page of what needs to happen, which is to get out and vote for Kamala Harris,” she told AURN News. “We've been going to several churches and having everyone go out to vote immediately after service. We've had a series of phone banking and we've been calling several people also to make sure they're turning in their ballots and they're turning out to vote, but we've seen more and more people turning out to vote in this election, so we're very excited about that.” Describing the candidates' closing arguments, Cherfilus-McCormick said, "What's been very clear about Kamala's closing argument has been one of compassion and unity and really seeing Americans for who they are and the strength of our nation... Whereas on the other hand, we keep hearing about Donald Trump and his list of people who he's going to retaliate against." As Election Day lies just days away, Trump still maintains leads in most battleground states, though polling also shows a tight race nationally.  Learn more about your ad choices.
