"If we don't tell our stories, who will? And if they do, will they tell it right?" — This question grounds the work of Marcia Black, a powerful cultural steward who's leading the charge at Black Bottom Archives, celebrating 10 years of preserving and honoring Black Detroit's legacy. In this Detroit is Different podcast, Marcia shares how her passion was sparked by early roots in environmental justice organizing through EMEAC, where she witnessed the brilliance and resilience of Black women leading on the frontlines. That experience lit a fire, and inspired by pioneers like PG Watkins and Camille Johnson, Marcia embraced the responsibility of archiving Black life, especially the voices of Black women too often erased from historical narratives. From growing up between Detroit and Duval County, Florida, her journey is a mosaic of Black Southern and Midwestern cultural memory. Guided by the radical education at Marygrove College and the example of her entrepreneurial, Catholic, beauty-salon-owning, computer-working, reverend grandmother, Marcia now curates community through exhibits, storytelling, and cultural programming. “Black women have always been the keepers of the flame,” she says, and her work ensures that flame continues to burn bright—one story, one installation, one memory at a time. Daryl Hance is a songwriter and guitar player from Duval County, Florida, whose music has been in my life for over twenty years.  I first learned of Daryl during his time with the band Mofro, now J.J. Grey and Mofro. He hasn't been with that band for a while and since gone on to carve a handful of wonderful solo records. I've long said his guitar playing is like a fingerprint. Maybe it's the Florida boy in me. Maybe it's the country boy in me. That swampy sound so few can capture with authenticity is hyper-present in Daryl's work and I am ready for more and more.  Daryl's latest record is called “Devil's Millhopper,” it is available wherever you consume music, and you can buy a digital copy on bandcamp.com. (AURN News) — As Americans prepare to choose between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who represents Florida's 20th Congressional District, is making a final push to mobilize voters across Florida's diverse communities. "No one can afford to sit this one out," Cherfilus-McCormick discussed the stakes in an interview with AURN News. "We've seen what Project 2025 is really all about... rolling back Medicaid and Medicare Social Security, which would totally devastate our seniors," she said. The Democratic congresswoman emphasized Harris's economic proposals, particularly those addressing cost-of-living concerns. "She has a robust economic plan that deals with some of the issues that we're facing, even when it comes to grocery price gouging, when it comes to housing, building over 3 million new houses and even having the first-time down payment program giving $25,000 for new homeowners," she commented. “These are all programs that are desperately needed at this moment, and we see so many people who are actually pushing and calling for a real government that sees the people for who they are and gives us a sense of hope and ensures that everyone has the opportunity to actually have a chance at thriving in the society.” Early voting data shows varying turnout across the state's metropolitan areas. "Palm Beach County has had a great turnout. Broward County is number two," Cherfilus-McCormick reported, while expressing concern about participation in other regions. "The areas where we really need to turn out and make sure everyone's voice is heard is in Jacksonville and Duval County." The congresswoman also noted increased political engagement within Florida's Haitian-American community. “I remember at the beginning of the election, some people weren't sure who they were voting for, because at one point, Trump did come down and try to cater towards the Haitian community. But I think what was a blessing and a curse was, the comments were a curse, but it ended up being a blessing, because right now, everyone seems to be on the same page of what needs to happen, which is to get out and vote for Kamala Harris,” she told AURN News. “We've been going to several churches and having everyone go out to vote immediately after service. We've had a series of phone banking and we've been calling several people also to make sure they're turning in their ballots and they're turning out to vote, but we've seen more and more people turning out to vote in this election, so we're very excited about that.” Describing the candidates' closing arguments, Cherfilus-McCormick said, "What's been very clear about Kamala's closing argument has been one of compassion and unity and really seeing Americans for who they are and the strength of our nation... Whereas on the other hand, we keep hearing about Donald Trump and his list of people who he's going to retaliate against." As Election Day lies just days away, Trump still maintains leads in most battleground states, though polling also shows a tight race nationally.  Learn more about your ad choices. Florida's chapter of the Republican Party rallied together at its annual assembly last Friday, culminating in an endorsement for former President Donald Trump as their candidate of choice in the 2024 elections. This action can be seen as an echo of the growing support for Trump among Republicans who are looking forward to the impending 2024 primary. State party Chairman Evan Power, assessing the outcome of the caucuses and the primary in Iowa and New Hampshire, urged Republicans to unite, with the aim of thwarting President Joe Biden, whom Power perceives as leading a faltering administration. After thorough evaluation of the preliminary political scenarios in both Iowa and New Hampshire, Power opines that the Republican party's most likely nominee is Donald Trump. Several noteworthy figures, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Senator Marco Rubio, and Senator Rick Scott, have intervened with their individual entreaties to consolidate the support behind Trump. Their call for unity came in January. The heads of the Republican Party in Duval County, led by Chairman and Representative Dean Black, took the pivotal action of filing an endorsement for Trump. Dean Black declared that the Florida GOP has overcome the internal competition of primaries and is now presenting a consolidated front with Donald Trump as its supported candidate. In a clear critique of the current administration, Black states that the citizens of Florida cannot endure the purported uncertainty and ineffective governance under President Biden for another four years. Black made a stern call to halt what he perceives as the national downward spiral. This, he believes, necessitates the return of a powerful leader at the helm of the nation. Black further emphasized the need for a firm leader with a strong 'America First' approach, and in his view, that leader is unquestionably former President Trump. Trump celebrated a substantial win in the Iowa caucuses, championing with about 51% of votes, a clear dominating lead of nearly 30 percentage points. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, after a surprising second-place finish in the caucus that was higher than initially expected, withdrew his candidacy. DeSantis then officially endorsed Trump in his dropout speech. Notably, receiving about 21% of the vote was a significant accomplishment that further emphasized the preferences of Republican voters. DeSantis extended support towards Trump because, in his words, the party cannot revert to the politics of the old Republican guard. DeSantis publicly conveyed his endorsement to an eager public, emphasizing the need for a strong leader within the Republican Party. Trump held a gathering in New Hampshire only a few hours after DeSantis's decision to step down. There, the former president publicly acknowledged the Florida governor's contributions and extended warm congratulations, describing him as a 'terrific person'. Following the Florida Governor's withdrawal, Evan Power, the newly appointed chairman, corroborated the prevalent sentiment within the Republican party leadership by endorsing Donald Trump. Trump indeed seems to be consolidating his power base, drawing in endorsements from eminent figures not just in Florida, but potentially across the nation. Trump has also been able to gain the support of other high-ranking Republican figures of Florida. This includes Florida Cabinet members like Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, Attorney General Ashley Moody and Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, prominent figures in Florida's political scene. Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, known for his conservative stands, has also announced his endorsement for Trump. Renner, an influential figure from Palm Coast, has been a longtime member of the Republican party and his backing adds to Trump's growing list of supporters. Adding to the momentum, Kathleen Passidomo, the current President of Florida Senate and a Republican from Naples, has also announced her support for Trump's candidacy. Passidomo's endorsement is quite significant, reflecting the broad array of support Trump has garnered within the party. Florida House Speaker-Designate, Daniel Perez, an emerging Republican leader from Miami, is another prominent figure to publicly endorse Trump. Perez's endorsement showcases the intrigue of younger Republicans in aligning with Trump's vision for America's future. Another valuable endorsement comes from the Florida Senate President-Designate Ben Albritton, a representative from Bartow. Albritton's public endorsement of Trump underscores the common sentiment in Florida's Republican leadership seeking a return to traditional conservative governing principles. RELATED:Nikki Haley Calls Nevada ‘A Scam' and Claims ‘Trump Rigged It' In essence, Florida's Republican Party seems to be aligning behind Trump as the potential Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election. Widespread endorsement from influential figures across Florida's Republican sphere further underscores Trump's significant stand within the party. This is particularly reflective of the Party's aim to push against the Biden administration in the bid to restore traditional conservative governance.
