Flewed Out Fascist with Mayor Ras Baraka

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum speak with the Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka. The Mayor made headlines last Friday after he was arrested by ICE while protesting a new ICE detention facility in his home city. Mayor Baraka’s arrest comes in the context of Trump’s sprawling campaign of retribution against his “political enemies.” From law firms, to judges, to universities and elected officials–Trump is weaponizing the federal government against anyone he perceives to have wronged him. The legal attacks are often effective even if his administration doesn’t win the case… Today our hosts discuss government retaliation. The chilling effect of these attacks could have long term impacts on free speech, the application of justice, and our ability to govern. Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Ras J. Baraka is a Newark native, poet, and educator. Under his leadership, Newark achieved a 60-year low in crime, replaced 23,000 lead service lines, and reduced homelessness by 57%. A member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Ras is a lifelong advocate for equity and opportunity. He’s now running a campaign for Governor of New Jersey. For the first time in Now We Know's history, Donna & Jonathan have a two-peat guest: Thomas Polk. In March 2023, Donna & Jonathan interviewed Thomas (who happens to be Donna's dad) about his affiliation with Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity Incorporated. This episode is a continuation of that telling as the origin story. What prompted the discussion was the untimely passing of Caleb Wilson, a pledge of Omega Psi Phi, in Louisiana in February as a direct result of hazing. Hazing, a practice long withstanding time, has resulted in the tragic ending of too many young lives and negatively affected those around them. Does the potential cost of entry outweigh the benefits? The service concluded three days of tributes, including his lying in state at the U.S. Capitol. Break 3: STORY 6: State may label 16 Gwinnett schools as 'failing' Sixteen Gwinnett County schools may be failing to meet Georgia's educational standards, though the accuracy of this list is under review. School board member Adrienne Simmons highlights the need to address the needs of multilingual and economically disadvantaged students. Charlton A. Holt is a native of Birmingham, Alabama, and an alum of Tennessee State University where he received his cum laude bachelor's degree in Business Information Systems. Charlton is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Beta Omicron Chapter. After graduation, Charlton worked 8 years as a Quality Assurance Engineer for a local Birmingham IT Consulting and Marketing company and was previous owner of Echo Lounge, before accepting a call into ministry in 2012. After attending Highlands College for ministry, Charlton moved to West Palm Beach to step on staff as a Pastor at Christ Fellowship. He started as a youth pastor and now works officially with what he calls “the big kids”. Prior to taking on the assignment of “the big kids”, Charlton served in the capacity of Student (Youth) Pastor for over 4 years. He has had the honor of presenting the gospel not only in the United States, but in countries such as Croatia, Honduras, Haiti, and Bolivia. Also, through his Christian leadership journey Charlton served as an overseer for Oasis Church, in Nashville, Tennessee. Charlton recently relocated back to Birmingham in October of 2022 and now serves as a Pastor at the Woodlawn location of Church of the Highlands. When asked about the theme of his life Charlton would entitle it “From the club to the church.” Charlton shares how the power of this theme is the manifestation of how GOD can completely change the trajectory of your life if you allow him through surrendering. Charlton always shares how he has a huge passion to see the lives of middle and high school students saved, redeemed, and transformed by the love and message of Jesus Christ. He is passionate about relationships, ministry, and physical health also. Charlton feels that GOD has created each of us uniquely. He feels that through our uniqueness we can impact the world. Charlton states that his major desire is to equip the body of Christ through the word of GOD, so that the body of Christ can meet the needs of the world. If you were to ask Charlton why he said yes to the call on his life, he would simply say, “Heaven and hell is real, whenever and whatever I can do to make the name of Jesus famous across the world I am willing to do.” He seeks to remind believers and nonbelievers that GOD is not limited to a prayer, nor is He focused on your sins alone. GOD desires your heart, that through salvation He can establish a relationship with you, and you can enjoy the gift of eternal life. Charlton is married to Allison and has 1 daughter named Charlotte who is the joy of his world. Charlton sums up life in a simple sentence, which is Matthew 6:33, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need”.

Hundreds of Gwinnett County kids had gifts to unwrap on Christmas morning because of one of the county's most famous sons. Rapper Offset, a Gwinnett native who rose to international fame as a member of Migos, held his first-ever toy giveaway at Central Baptist Church in Lawrenceville on Friday. This is the first Christmas since Offset's cousin and fellow Migos member, Takeoff, was killed in Houston nearly two months ago. The Toys For Nawf event offered kids a chance to get plenty of gifts, ranging from bikes and remote control cars to dolls and toy dinosaurs. Kids also got to play games, enjoy hot chocolate and other snacks and play in an inflatable obstacle course. Offset's efforts to help families enjoy Christmas did not go unnoticed by local leaders. Lawrenceville and Gwinnett County leaders presented proclamations to Offset, whose birth name is Kiari Cephus. A proclamation from the city of Atlanta was also presented to him. “(Migos) are our favorite sons,” county commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson said. “They put Gwinnett County on the map, and when they talk about the ‘NAWF side,' they're talking about the suburbs of Gwinnett County. They're not talking about Atlanta. They're talking about Gwinnett. Several organizations, including Central Baptist Church, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and the Lawrenceville Boys and Girls Club, along with local government officials partnered with Offset to stage the event. On behalf of Georgia's 3,500 cotton farming families, the Georgia Cotton Commission recently donated 12,000 pairs of socks to various homeless shelters across the state. Farmers delivered socks to the Albany Rescue Mission, the Friends Ministry in Bainbridge, Lowndes Associated Ministries to People in Valdosta, the Southwest Georgia Housing Opportunities in Columbus, The Sparrow's Nest in Athens, Cedartown United Fund, the Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia in Macon, the Atlanta Mission, the CSRA Economic Opportunity Authority in Augusta, Fair Haven in Jesup, and the Homeless Authority in Savannah. The Georgia Cotton Commission is a producer-funded organization located in Perry. The commission began in 1965. Georgia cotton producers pay an assessment enabling the commission to invest in programs of research, promotion, and education on behalf of all cotton producers of Georgia. Eight boys basketball teams head to Buford City Arena this week for the inaugural Buford Classic. Half of the field is made up of Gwinnett teams with the host Wolves being joined by Archer, Shiloh and South Gwinnett. Carrollton, Sequoyah, Walnut Grove and West Forsyth also are in the field. Shiloh opens Wednesday's first round with a matchup against Sequoyah, followed by Archer (8-2, No. 8 in Class AAAAAAA) against West Forsyth at 4:30 p.m. The two late games Wednesday feature South (8-2) vs. Carrollton (9-1, No. 10 in AAAAAAA) at 6 p.m., and Buford (6-3) against Walnut Grove at 7:30 p.m. Play continues with four games Thursday — semifinals are 6 and 7:30 p.m. — followed by four more games Friday, highlighted by the 7:30 p.m. championship game. Gwinnett County officials are planning to seek federal grant funding to find a new way to reduce the amount of biosolids coming out of the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center by turning them into fertilizer. The Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources is applying for a $21.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Fertilizer Production Expansion Program. County officials plan to use the grant funds, if they are approved to receive it, to purchase a biosolids dryer for the water resources center, which treats and cleans wastewater before returning it to the county's water source, Lake Lanier. The center has done work in the past to extract as much waste as possible to be converted into other uses. The biosolids dryer would be used to convert biosolid waste to fertilizer instead of sending it to landfills. County officials said, in addition to buying the dryer, they will use the grant funds to develop a marketing plan to sell the fertilizer.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Day 11 Before T.I., before Jeezy, and before Lil Baby… For a city that thrives on “started from the bottom now I'm here” storylines, it makes sense that Atlanta's first Black millionaire was a barber named Alonzo. He didn't have a Morehouse degree, or an Alpha Phi Alpha pedigree like Sweet Auburn Avenue's favorite son, Martin Luther King Jr. What Alonzo lacked in formality, he made up for with a hustler's spirit. This is the story you didn't know. The story of the real A. The Story of Auburn Ave. The story of Alonzo who left his small town in Georgia on foot with $11 of savings and about a year of schooling. He emerged to help make Sweet Auburn Avenue “the richest Negro Street in the world.”

Desmond worked his way up, became a store manager, and later moved to West Virginia to help revive a store in the mall. After being successful at that Desmond would later work in the corporate office as a buyer, where he became in charge of placing all the dope accessories in the store.
