A new trial date has been set for Donna Adelson — August 19. But a secret investigation and recent wiretaps could have major consequences for the rest of the Adelson family. #STSNation, Welcome to Surviving the Survivor, the show that brings you the very #BestGuests in all of #TrueCrime on trending criminal cases. This is the twisted murder-for-hire that started it all — the case of Dan Markel. Dan Markel was shot and killed moments after he pulled up his driveway and into his garage. He died the next day. Now, almost 11 years later the story is still unraveling as alleged co-conspirators, like Donna Adelson, are going on trial one by one. Markel was killed in Tallahassee, Florida, in 2014, in a murder for hire in what prosecutors say was motivated by child custody issues with Markel's ex-wife, Wendi Adelson. Wendi Adelson's brother, Charlie Adelson, was convicted of the murder of Dan Markel in 2023 just days before his mother, Donna Adelson, was also arrested. We're now learning that Donna Adelson's trial, which was supposed to start in June 2025, is now set to begin August 19, but major questions still remain. A hearing is scheduled this Friday, and at the center of it all: • An apparent secret investigation involving new wiretaps that went through February 2024 • Speculation is mounting that the case may expand beyond Donna and Charlie • What could this mean for the other Adelsons like Wendi and Harvey?#BestGuests: Jeremy Mutz, former Leon County prosecutor and current criminal defense attorney Dr. Melissa Hamilton Law Professor Jo Potuto

In this episode, Steve Vancore sits down with Vince Long, County Administrator for Leon County, to discuss the evolving challenges faced by city managers and county administrators over the last two decades. The conversation highlights the significant changes in the role of elected officials, emphasizing how the constant pressure to address urgent issues often sidelines crucial, fundamental responsibilities. Vince reflects on the increased complexity of problems, tighter constraints, and the deeply personal implications of decisions in public office. He offers a stark observation: "This business eats the best and the brightest for breakfast if you don't understand the effective council-manager relationship," underscoring the critical need for effective leadership and strategic foresight in government roles. This episode provides an insightful look into the pressures and responsibilities that define modern public administration.

On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, Phoenix Eichner, a 20-year-old Florida State University student and son of a Leon County sheriff's deputy, opened fire near the Student Union on the FSU campus in Tallahassee, killing two people and injuring six others. The media's response to this is so predictable. They focus on gun control but ignore other amendments, while advocating for due process for illegal immigrants. Not all violent deaths, like stabbings, involve guns, yet the media emphasizes the Second Amendment. This shooting, where the shooter's mother is a deputy with necessary gun access, is unrelated to gun control. The media should clarify which amendments they prioritize and why. Also, Islamists follow a purist ideology that prioritizes the afterlife and seeks to eliminate barriers to pure Islam, including less devout Muslims and non-believers. The 9/11 attacks, led by Osama bin Laden, exemplified this ideology, as does the Muslim Brotherhood. Traditional deterrents fail against this mindset, which values the next life over the present, making Iran's potential nuclear weapons a serious concern. Allowing a country that chants "Death to America" to develop and potentially use nuclear weapons is not noble. Later, Mark announced that President Trump had appointed him to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, which is a great honor. Those appointed to this board want nothing to do with open borders.  Afterward, the Supreme Court will review Trump's plan to restrict birthright citizenship, which lacks a basis in the 14th Amendment. One possible solution the court could agree on is ending birthright citizenship from a set date, grandfathering prior cases. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

RAW COURT AUDIO: DONNA ADELSON HEARING PART 4 Donna Adelson, the Florida woman accused of orchestrating the murder-for-hire plot against her former son-in-law, Dan Markel, claims she and her husband, Harvey Adelson, intended to travel to Vietnam to “catch their breath” before turning themselves in, not to escape justice. Adelson, 75, made the stunning revelation during a court appearance in Leon County, where she sought her release from jail. Dressed in a purple jumpsuit and shackled, she testified that her husband suggested the trip to Vietnam—where they had previously vacationed—after their son, Dr. Charlie Adelson, was convicted for hiring hitmen to kill Markel in 2014. “I wasn't afraid of being arrested,” Adelson stated in court, according to CourtTV. “My husband and I—literally shocked and traumatized at what had happened to Charlie—he said, ‘We need to just get some peace, we need to catch our breath, we're gonna go away somewhere.'” In November 2023, authorities arrested the couple at Miami International Airport as they prepared to board a flight to Vietnam via Dubai. Both Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates lack extradition agreements with the United States. Law enforcement officials viewed the move as an attempt to flee prosecution. Despite the circumstances, Adelson maintained they had every intention of returning to the U.S. voluntarily. “If we go to a non-extradition country, then if law enforcement decided that they wanted to arrest you or me, we won't be sitting in a foreign prison waiting months to go back,” she recalled her husband saying. She insisted they understood what their trip might look like to authorities but believed traveling to Vietnam would provide them with a chance to clear their heads before turning themselves in. “I thought it was a good idea because I just couldn't think straight,” Adelson told the court. The case stems from the 2014 murder of Markel, a Florida State University law professor who was embroiled in a bitter custody dispute with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, Donna's daughter. Wendi had wanted to move with their two children from Tallahassee to South Florida, a request Markel had fought in court. Prosecutors allege that Donna and her son Charlie conspired to have Markel killed to resolve the family's custody battle. The case remained unsolved for years until law enforcement arrested Charlie Adelson in April 2022. In November 2023, a jury convicted him of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation. Prosecutors proved he had hired gang members Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera to carry out the hit. Garcia, the triggerman, is serving a life sentence, while Rivera, who cooperated with authorities, received a 19-year sentence. Garcia's ex-wife, Katherine Magbanua, who had been dating Charlie Adelson at the time, was also convicted and sentenced to life in prison for her role in arranging the murder. Charlie Adelson's conviction appeared to trigger his parents' attempt to leave the country just two weeks later. “I wanted to get away, he wanted to get away. That's what we wanted to do,” Donna Adelson said of her husband. She testified that she had consulted with her lawyers before the trip and was assured that there were no active warrants or charges against them. “I thought if you asked your attorneys and they tell you that, I'm going,” she said. Despite allegedly being warned they could be stopped at the airport, the couple proceeded with their travel plans—only to be intercepted by authorities before boarding their flight. With her son convicted and her own trial ahead, Adelson continues to fight the charges, maintaining that her travel plans were not an attempt to flee justice but rather a desperate attempt to process what had happened to her family. #FloridaCrime #TrueCrime #DanMarkel #MurderForHire #DonnaAdelson #FSU #Justice Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? RAW COURT AUDIO: DONNA ADELSON HEARING PART 2 Donna Adelson, the Florida woman accused of orchestrating the murder-for-hire plot against her former son-in-law, Dan Markel, claims she and her husband, Harvey Adelson, intended to travel to Vietnam to “catch their breath” before turning themselves in, not to escape justice. The capital of Florida is Tallahassee, a city deeply rooted in history and political significance. It serves as the county seat of Leon County and stands as the largest city in the Florida Panhandle. With a population of approximately 193,500, Tallahassee is the seventh-largest city in Florida and 126th in the United States. Despite not being as populous as Miami or Orlando, Tallahassee plays a crucial role as Florida's political hub, housing the state government, the Florida Supreme Court, and the Governor's Mansion. It is also home to two major universities—Florida State University and Florida A&M University—making it a prominent college town with a student population of nearly 70,000. Discover your family story for free Beyond its governmental and educational significance, Tallahassee is a center for legal and lobbying firms, professional associations, and state agencies. In recognition of its civic engagement, the National Civic League awarded Tallahassee the All-American City Award in 2015. However, long before it became Florida's political heart, Tallahassee was home to indigenous cultures that shaped its landscape and history. Originally from Toronto, he earned a J.D. from Harvard University in 2001. After working as a law clerk for a federal judge and as an associate at a law firm, he joined the faculty of Florida State University in 2005. Markel was killed in Tallahassee, Florida, in 2014, in a murder-for-hire motivated by child custody issues following Markel's divorce from Wendi Adelson, a clinical law professor and child advocate also employed at Florida State University at the time. Wendi Adelson has not been charged, but she has been named, together with her brother Charlie and mother Donna, as "conspirators" in the killing. Four individuals have been convicted in the case. Luis Rivera pled guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 19 years in prison. Sigfredo Garcia was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to life in prison. After a mistrial was declared in her original trial, Katherine Magbanua was found guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder in her retrial; she was sentenced to life in prison plus two consecutive 30-year sentences. Charlie Adelson, Wendi Adelson's brother, was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder. On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, Charlie Adelson was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder plus an additional 30 years each for conspiracy and solicitation convictions. Donna Adelson, Markel's former mother-in-law, was arrested at the Miami International Airport on a warrant from Leon County, apparently trying to flee to Vietnam, a country with no extradition treaty with the U.S. She is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder. Her trial is set for September 17, 2024. • Disclaimer: All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The Salvation Army of Tallahassee, Florida spent the weekend serving their community following severe weather, including strong winds and tornados, that tore through the State Capital early last Friday morning. Parts of the city were heavily impacted by the storms, but the outlying areas of Leon County received major storm damages mostly due to the vast number of trees that were downed.   As the storm passed through the Panhandle of Florida, upwards of 50% of customers were without power in Leon County alone. With that fact in mind, the Leon County Emergency Management contacted The Salvation Army late Friday night with the request to deploy the canteen beginning Saturday on a day-by-day basis.   The Tallahassee Corps Canteen deployed Saturday and Sunday to the outlying portions of the County, serving hot meals alongside the County run Points of Distribution.   The Canteen served over 600 meals, as approximately 900 households received cases of water and ice from the distribution points. The Salvation Army will continue to communicate and coordinate with emergency management officials and will serve those still without power into the beginning of the new week, on a day-to-day basis.

Judge Cooper in Leon County, Florida was not satisfied by the language of Florida State's complaint against the ACC. It's a small victory for the ACC but the judge noted that he has not ruled against Florida State. They will have seven days to amend their complaint and then the ACC will have twenty days to respond. A new hearing in Florida will be scheduled for a later date. Hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs break down that latest update and also note that Judge Cooper requested the two sides to start mediation within the next 120 days. Could FSU and the ACC come to an agreement for Florida State's exit without finishing the process through the courts? What is the end game for the ACC in their legal battles against Florida State University? Should the conference consider settling sooner than later? In reality, the ACC needs to fight to protect their grant of rights for as long as possible because if that crumbles, an FSU exit could set a precedent for others to follow. Then, the conference would be in a terrible position for the renewal of their TV deal with ESPN. And even if the ACC sees settlement  with FSU as an inevitability, they'd much rather settle from a position of strength. Hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs break down the significance of Florida's State's Tuesday win in court against the ACC. The Leon County, FL judge felt the ACC rushed to file first in North Carolina as a method of “forum shopping.” Donno and Gibbs take a look at what could be a crazy NCAA transfer portal window next week. The NCAA is no longer able to enforce transfer restrictions, meaning players are essentially free to jump from school to school as much as they like. Florida State feels that if they leave the conference, the ACC will not own their future TV rights over the next twelve years, something the conference feels they are legally entitled to through 2036. Legal battles between Florida State and the ACC are unfolding in courts, with the Florida State University Board of Trustees suing the Atlantic Coast Conference, and vice versa. Judge Louis A. The ACC's filing contends, "Florida State alleges no facts in support of its bare-bones venue allegation." On February 9, 2024, the first formal court hearing was scheduled for March 22 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, focusing on the ACC's lawsuit. Judge Louis A. Bledsoe III ordered the hearing to address the ACC's motion to seal portions of the case concerning confidential details, such as ESPN contract information, along with FSU's motion to dismiss the case. On February 7, 2024, Florida State filed a motion in a North Carolina court to dismiss the ACC's complaint against them. FSU argued that the ACC filed its lawsuit preemptively, before any dispute arose, and without proper support from member schools. Additionally, FSU contended that the case should be heard in Leon County, rather than Charlotte. On January 30, 2024, FSU filed an amended complaint in Leon County, accusing the ACC of "self-dealing," particularly highlighting former ACC commissioner John Swofford's actions regarding TV deals involving Raycom Sports, where his son worked. The complaint also criticized the ACC's decision to accept SMU, Cal, and Stanford, citing lower TV viewership compared to FSU. On January 17, 2024, the ACC filed an updated 191-page complaint against FSU, prompting further analysis of the case. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! In a surprising turn of events, recorded jail calls between Donna Adelson and her son, Charlie Adelson, have shed light on the emotional turmoil within the Adelson family following Charlie's conviction in the high-profile Dan Markel murder case. Charlie Adelson, a wealthy periodontist from Fort Lauderdale, was found guilty on November 6 of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in the 2014 killing of his former brother-in-law, Dan Markel. His mother, Donna Adelson, faced arrest on similar charges just days later, sparking intense scrutiny of their family dynamics. The jail calls, totaling more than 35 hours, captured candid conversations between Charlie and his parents as they grappled with the consequences of his conviction and the impending legal proceedings. One particular call, initiated by Charlie Adelson from the Leon County Detention Facility, lasted 25 minutes and was marked by emotional exchanges between Charlie and Donna Adelson. During this call, Donna Adelson discussed several significant topics: 1. **The Markel Case:** Donna Adelson openly spoke about the Markel murder case, reflecting the family's distress. Her statements indicated the gravity of the situation, given Charlie's recent conviction and the ongoing investigation. 2. **Text Message from Daughter:** She read aloud a text message exchange with her daughter, Wendi Adelson, which occurred hours after the guilty verdicts were announced. Wendi's message expressed her position that she was not responsible for Charlie's situation and focused on caring for her sons during this difficult time. 3. **Suicidal Thoughts:** Donna Adelson made conflicting remarks about her own emotional state, mentioning thoughts of not wanting to see her son and suggesting a joint suicide. She expressed a desire to escape from the situation, raising concerns about her well-being. 4. **Extradition to Vietnam:** She mentioned looking up Vietnam multiple times to determine whether it had an extradition treaty with the U.S., possibly hinting at future plans. The call took place on November 7, the day following Charlie Adelson's conviction and shortly before Donna's arrest. It was marked by moments of tension and vulnerability, showcasing the immense stress experienced by the Adelson family. Prosecutors revealed that these jail calls, totaling over 35 hours of conversations between Charlie, Donna, and others, played a pivotal role in accelerating Donna Adelson's arrest. The calls forced them to expedite their timetable. Donna Adelson, who had been in solitary confinement and on suicide watch, recently made her first in-person appearance in a Leon County courtroom. During her arraignment, she pleaded not guilty to charges related to the murder of Dan Markel. Her attorney alleged mistreatment by the jail authorities but was unsuccessful in obtaining intervention by the court. The Markel case, dating back to 2014, has garnered widespread attention for its intricate details and complex family dynamics. Dan Markel was fatally shot in his garage during a legal battle with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, who had ties to the Adelson family. Prosecutors have long maintained that Markel's murder was orchestrated to facilitate Wendi Adelson's relocation to Miami. The recorded jail calls provide a unique insight into the emotions and conversations that unfolded within the Adelson family during this tumultuous period. As the legal proceedings continue, the Markel case remains a focal point of interest and scrutiny. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
