Al 'Sugabear' Parham rode out to Dr. Grins in Grand Rapids to lose a comedy competition. We talk comedy, and he explains why white rooms are so much easier then black ones. Nate Armbruster runs a a podcast where he gets his guests to walk him through one crazy story. I tell him about the time I used to play in a metal band and got us blacklisted from the Arizona metal scene. I met Nate through the Michigan comedy scene, and he can often be found traveling the midwest doing stand up comedy. Check him out!
Alex Stypula was in town from Pittsburgh and we all sat down to talk about the absurdities of stand up after a show that night
Mat Richards and I talk about growing up as non-denominational christians as we return from a show in Port Clinton Ohio
Brett Mercer and I podcast after leaving our second show of the night. Pumped from what a great night it was.
Shane Dials and I road trip to Kalamazoo Michigan to do a spot. We talk comedy, writing, and coping with holding mics and talking into them for a road trip
Ryan Patrick Hooper is a writer, radio personality, and comedian. One of the first few friends I made when we moved to Detroit. Recorded at Lj's Sweetheart Bar, the home of Prankis you can hear my favorite surly bartender make the first of probably many appearances, Kay everybody.
Bonny Doon is a Detroit based band that recently released an album through Salinas Records. Great dudes great band. We recorded this before they left for tour and blew it by not posting it until their tour was over. Enjoy!
Bree & Kevin are some of our dearest Detroit friends - they're urban farmers, DIYers, pupper parents of 3, activists and all around good-ass people that you would definitely want around in the event of an apocalypse. This is the first of many podcasts with them as there's so much to talk about - we really focused on their mission to preserve their (and our) amazing Detroit neighborhood.
Courtney Henriette and Phil Kafka are 2/3rd's of Katoi, a Thai inspired restaurant that was recently the victim of arson in Detroit.
Paul Johnson is an multi disciplinary artist currently living in Detroit. We met him at his opening the first time we visited Detroit over a year ago. He shares some crazy stories over some drinks. Ever taken a one way ticket to the other side of the earth with no plan? Amazing dude, Amazing podcast. Find him on instagram @_ffty https://www.1xrun.com/run/dreamscaped_-_hand-embellished_edition
Madison is a tiny ethnically ambiguous human who loves psychedelics and being in touch with her body. After relaying a snippet of her experience backpacking around Peru and happening upon an ayahuasca ceremony we knew we had to get her on the show. She graciously agreed, and put us up in her amazing Ann Arbor home - which is really a 4 acre farm.
We did a round two with the lovely Molly Soda who hosted us at her Hamtramck home. This episode features local affairs, art-talk, the role of an artist and the ongoing conversation of the female struggle.
It's round two for the SWAPCAST with Jesse Upshaw & Maxwell Mayberry's Southwest Social Club! We were super happy to be back at the humble Tempe home, sittin' round the shitty Ikea table talking into socks.
After a bit of a hiatus spending a month back in the desert, we got to recording with our Phoenix bud Joel Robinson. He's the brains behind his band, Sunn Trio, a jazzy-psychadelic-avant-garde improv band that takes much influence from the music of the world. We talk about that, the days of Praecum, Joel's drug addiction and his current work focusing on helping the homeless find housing and jobs. Plus the necessary amount of bullshit, too.
We have Fran back on for round 2 as she anticipates her relocation to NYC for grad school. We're p sad she's leaving, but v happy she's continuing to be a badass.
The hosts of Something O'er the Hill just moved to Detroit (well, two weeks ago) and were super excited to run into the sativa diva herself, Zoë Ligon. She invited us to her recently purchased home off 8 mile, which is gorgeous inside and out, much like the host herself. She is the CEO of Spectrum Boutique, a specialty sex toy shop which ships out of Detroit. We ask her lots of dumb questions and get to know our mutual girl crush.
We're back in Omaha to see our ol' friend Rachel Ware who we met about 7 months ago when the trip was just starting out. She welcomed up with open arms and a loaded bowl, and we appreciate the fuck out of her. Listen to us ramble and get a little too drunk and abruptly ending the podcast because of it.
We post up with Mickey and Remi after staying with them for a few days in their rainy ass home of Portland. We talk about Bart's set at The Rose and Thistle, how Mickey and Bart met, Remi and Mickey's life in Portland.. and so the fuck on. Listen for all the other details :~)
We met up with Vivian Fu for a late night conversation at her apartment in San Francisco. We got to know her for a bit over two hours on a rainy night in the city, talking about her art, her job in a photo lab, her long time boyfriend and best friend Tim, and everything in between. Listen up and get to know this badass lady!
We feature two amaze photographers in episode #022 - Molly Matalon & Damien Maloney. We've been admiring them from afar for a while now - and were excited as hell to post up in their Oakland living room and talk for a couple hours 8~)
Hunter Hancock is an amazing visual artist and his drawings will shoot you into another dimension. We talk art, anarchy, SF, and horrible jet plane stories. Keepin' it fuq as punk.
Alison hosts us at her apartment in Silver Lake, Los Angeles where she makes a living as a Music Supervisor, working on TV shows like Fresh off the Boat and Love and movies like Trainwreck and Sex Tape. We talk about her bad-ass job and move along to the relevant pot-induced tangents.
We feature Bucky Miller in the very overdue episode #018. We talk about his recent experience studying abroad in London, how weird skateboarding is, Big Tex and our culmination of living in the trailer.
Bart & Abigail do an update on what's been happening since leaving off in Detroit, MI with Molly Soda.
We got to meet and talk to digital artist Molly Soda! Check her out at mollysoda.biz and mollysoda.tumblr.com .
Francis is a Detroit based visual artist who makes prints, zines, shirts... really anything she fucking feels like. We talk to her just after hosting a booth for her online store/DIY project, Relentless Melt, at the third annual Detroit Art Book Fair hosted by Ditto Ditto Press. The conversation meanders all over, from talking about the city of Detroit, to the art she makes to sex and relationships. We love Francis and miss her but she's doing great things in her new city. http://www.relentlessmelt.com/ http://www.francis-eclaire.com/ http://www.dittoditto.org/
#013 Backline Comedy's Power Hour 10.9.15 by Bart Dangus
We met Rachel at an open mic our first night in Omaha and her set kicked ass, so we creeped up on her and asked to do a podcast. We recorded from the green room of Backline Comedy, a club she co-owns in downtown Omaha. She's a hilarious lady and tells us about Omaha and the growing comedy scene here as well as a bunch of other bullshit. Check out http://www.backlinecomedy.com/
Bart and Abigail give a quick update on where they're at and what's been happening on the trip - it's been one week since they left Phoenix.
Caleb and Taura are the two most hospitable people in Denver. We posted up in front of their house for a long weekend and go to indulge in their Colorado lifestyle. We sat down toward the end of the stay to wrap up everything and talk shit with a guest appearance from their precious pup, Lemmy.
Literally moments after pulling out of our former driveway, we started recording this episode. We were completely exhausted from the previous days of preparation and experiencing so many simultaneous highs and lows of emotions, you can hear our uncertainty in how to be feeling. We pick up a couple days later as we head from Albuquerque to Denver, and do a small update on what's been happening since our Phoenix departure.
