The gang dives in with playoff basketball stress, spring allergies, and the kind of opening chaos that lets you know this one is going off-road immediately. From there it turns into a freewheeling mess of stories about late nights, missing co-hosts, Port Huron, comedy road gigs, and whether Alaska is beautiful, terrifying, or both.Along the way, they bounce through wolf-pack theories, Northern Lights frustration, bathhouse detours, dog stories, doctor avoidance, cosmetic dentistry, and the strange ways bodies start betraying you with age. It is part locker room, part hang, part accidental philosophy seminar held in a room where nobody is qualified to teach. The back half swerves into sports betting, fantasy football, 9/11 memories, conspiracy talk, and the specific joy of friends arguing with complete confidence about things they may or may not actually know. In other words, a very Burt Selleck episode: wild tangents, gross honesty, and just enough sincerity sneaking through the floorboards to keep the whole thing human.

— "Tu lui as sauvé la vie."

By now, you may have seen a photo taken high above the Detroit River of two iron workers, one from Canada and one from the United States, shaking hands to mark the completion of the deck on the Gordie Howe International Bridge. On this week's edition of the Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, a conversation with those iron workers, Jason Huggett of Canada and Casey Whitson of Michigan. Both are second-generation iron workers. Jason's father helped build the twin span of the Blue Water Bridge linking Port Huron, Michigan, with Sarnia, Ontario. Casey's father worked on the Renaissance Center in Detroit as well as Joe Louis Arena. They talk about what working on this once-in-a-lifetime project means to both of them and how honored each of them was to participate in the handshake. They each spoke about it to the Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority after the handshake:Said Huggett: “I said it was about time we got to shake hands after seeing each other from a distance for almost two years, it was really something special. That handshake means a lot to my family, my two sons and my father, who helped build the twin span for the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia.” And Whitson: “We would see each other, but we were far, across the river, apart for all these months working. To actually get to be able to meet each other and shake hands and say hello is really cool. It's the biggest moment in my career and I now share something with my father, who helped build the Renaissance Center in Detroit.”

On today's Daily Detroit, we're thinking about green spaces and trails. J.J. Tighe, who is in charge of parks and trails at the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, talks about what they're doing. It's not just about building; it's about connecting people and making it easier to get around. The trails are meant to help people get to different places and also boost the economy in the areas around them. We talk about some important projects, like the Downriver Link Greenway. It connects 18 towns south of Detroit to the Joe Louis Greenway in the city. There's also the Bridge to Bay project, which is trying to connect Port Huron and St. Clair. Another project is the Wixom, Walldale, and Commerce township lake-to-lake trail, with eyes on downtown Pontiac. We also share an in-depth update on the West Riverfront Park, now known as the Ralph Wilson Centennial Park. The park is set to open in October, and Tighe shares some of the details that make it so special — a park aims to be a landmark that the city can be proud of for years to come.
