Connecting with our ancestors. Our guest Stephanie R. Burns starts by describing her all-inclusive view of ancestors which is far vaster than our biological lineage, including the most ancient ancestor of them all, the Earth. In this replay of a popular episode from September, Stephanie says that we can choose to communicate only with benevolent ancestors and are also able to heal the less healthy ancestors and not let ourselves be controlled by them. She suggests using the four elements as part of our rituals around working with these dreams and focusing on intentionality and gratitude. She describes what she calls Earth Dreaming which is dreaming for the healing of Mama Earth. Max from Bonny Doon shares a recent dream of his about a tree and how we act as if everything is not connected. Steve calls from Prunedale to ask how to start making an alliance w a particular grandfather who died when he was ten. Kay calls from Vermont asking if you can you doubt the answers from your ancestors, and Stephanie replies, “Yes! Trust what you know.” BIO: Stephanie R Burns, based in New Orleans, is an author, speaker, and master dreamer who uses her multiple degrees to explore ways to create frameworks from ancient wisdom. It an album that is decidedly happy and sounds like a group of friends who are relaxed and comfortable in their identity as a band. Webpost

On Indiecast, Steven and Ian try to keep the gap between what we talk about privately in the DM's and what we talk about on the show as narrow as possible. But given all the weird online discourse this week, that just wasn't possible in this episode. Between all the Boygenius gatekeeping and "state of music criticism" chatter, it was a very odd bunch of days online. Oh, and as if things were bad enough: Fall Out Boy released an updated version of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire" covering the years between 1989 and now. The whole ordeal provoked another anti-Fall Out Boy rant from Steven (8:25).Thankfully, the guys found solace in the mailbag (16:14). Listeners came through with some very good topics: Is it possible to separate your "critic" brain from your "fan" brain? How important are record labels now as arbiters of quality? What makes a good concert T-shirt? Also, the guys "yay or nay" the aughts era indie band Art Brut, which prompted a Fall Out Boy-style rant from Ian.Finally, in Recommendation Corner (55:48), Ian talks up arty metalheads Loma Prieta while Steven stumps for the mellow Michigan folk-rock band Bonny Doon.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Episode 273: On August 15, 2009, the mutilated body of Jasmine Fiore, a 28-year-old Playboy model and aspiring actress, was found stuffed into a suitcase and discarded in a dumpster in Buena Park, California. The investigation quickly led to her husband, Ryan Jenkins, a Canadian real estate investor and former contestant on the reality TV show “Megan Wants a Millionaire.” As the investigation progressed, a disturbing picture of domestic violence and jealousy emerged. It was revealed that Jenkins had a history of abusive behaviour towards Jasmine, and the couple had a tumultuous relationship. The motive for the murder appeared to be jealousy and control. Ryan Jenkins fled to Canada, and an international manhunt was launched to apprehend him. However, on August 23, 2009, Jenkins was found dead in a Hope, British Columbia motel room. He had completed suicide by hanging himself. This case generated widespread media coverage and sparked discussions about domestic violence, the dark side of reality TV, and the importance of raising awareness about toxic relationships. The tragic death of Jasmine Fiore served as a grim reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the need for intervention and support for victims. Sonoma County Vintners While The Drive is on Summer vacation, there is no new CWC show this week, but Taste of Sonoma is this coming Saturday, so here is a repeat of the episode from last May 17, with Craig McAllister from La Crema. Steve Jaxon, Dan Berger and guest Craig McAllister talk about La Crema and about the upcoming Taste of Sonoma. Craig McAllister, head winemaker at La Crema, is our in-studio guest on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. The last time we had a guest from La Crema was this March 2, 2022 episode with winemaker Eric Johannsen. Taste of Sonoma La Crema will be pouring at the Grand Tasting at the Taste of Sonoma at Kendall-Jackson, on Saturday June 24, an event sponsored by Sonoma County Vintners. All the other great labels will be there too. Dan Berger says it's one of the most enjoyable events on the calendar. There will also be live music. The Themed Lounges at Taste of Sonoma Later in the show, Dan describes the themed lounges at Taste of Sonoma as an opportunity to get an education in wine. La Crema Rosé of Pinot Noir Craig also brought a Rosé of Pinot Noir from Saralee's vineyard, which is only sold in the tasting room. It is grown and made with the intent of making Rosé. It has bright natural acidity and smells a bit like champagne stock, says Dan. There is Pinot Noir flavor without any of the tannin or bite. It's copper colored with a hint of pink. It is bone dry, close to zero sugar. “All fermented out…” says Craig. The hand harvested fruit is picked in the very early morning and it goes straight into a very gentle pressing cycle. Direct to press means that the grapes are only gently pressed, not crushed, which would bring more tannins and other flavor elements into the juice. My guest for this episode is Randall Grahm. If you haven't heard of him, Randall was New California about 20 years before the wave of New California winemakers. Young winemakers now who have never heard of him are just quote unquote discovering and trying things he did in the 1990s. Alternative packaging? Randall was one of the first advocates in America for the screw cap and staged The Funeral for the Cork at Grand Central Station in NYC in 2002. This elaborate event included a buick hearse, a casket with a full sized corpse made of corks, and a eulogy by Jancis Robinson. Alternative and obscure grape Varieties in the US? Randall was the original Rhone Ranger and appeared on the cover of Wine Spectator dressed as the Lone Ranger, with a horse, in 1989. With his winery, Bonny Doon, he helped introduce and popularize the Rhone varieties of grapes that we take for granted now. At its height, Bonny Doon was one of the largest wineries in America. In 1991 an asteroid was named “Rhoneranger” in his honor. In addition to crafting some other big brands, like Big House Red and Cardinal Zin, he continues to promote obscure and overlooked grape varieties, as you'll hear in this interview. Randall was an early proponent of ingredient labeling on wine bottles, as well as biodynamic farming. In 1994 He was proclaimed the Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year by the James Beard Foundation, and in 2010 the Culinary Institute of America inducted him into the Vintner's Hall of Fame. In addition to being a very entertaining disruptor of the wine industry, Randall is an incredibly thoughtful winemaker and writer, and one of his guiding principles has been the pursuit of terroir. In this interview we dig into terroir and “wines of place,” attempting to determine if it is actually a helpful or beneficial concept, or if it is even real. Randall explains how he is testing a few new theories about terroir at his estate vineyard project, Popelouchum, in San Juan Bautista, where he's growing myriad varieties of grapes, many from seed. And we discuss his partnership with Gallo on The Language of Yes project. I hope this will make you want to learn more about Randall Grahm. Hailing out of Los Angeles, Randall Grahm attended college in Santa Cruz. A stint at a wine shop in Beverly Hills woke Randall to the allure and magic of wine, sending him to UC Davis to study Plant Science, and an itching obsession with Pinot Noir. Randall made his way back to Santa Cruz and, as they say, the rest is history. He started Bonny Doon Vineyard in the early ‘80's and made a sharp turn from Pinot Noir to becoming a California pioneer of Rhone varietals with his iconic Le Cigare Volant. Randall recently sold Bonny Doon and launched a new project called the Language of Yes with none other than the Gallo Family. Randall's other obsession is his interest and work in the expansion and expression of new varietals in California. Randall approaches the whole wine thing with a bit of wit, as a bad boy sometimes, a dreamer and a true genius. Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. I discuss how to do this and where it can lead with dreamworker Katherine Bell. Randall Grahm, one of California's most innovative vintners, founder of Bonny Doon Vineyard and Popelouchum is the guest of Looking Into wine.We started by talking about his early days. After three years studying philosophy at Santa Cruz University, and completing a winemaking degree at UC Davis, Grahm acquired a vineyard site at Bonny Doon in the Santa Cruz mountains. His first dream was to make Pinot Noir, but he soon realised that it was too warm on the mountain. He then moved to Syrah with a great deal of success. Grahm recalls how it was to work with the grape in the 70s, and how difficult it was to find good cuttings.Continuing with Rhône varieties Grahm started to grow Grenache and Mourvedre. ‘I thought that if I blended those grapes maybe something good would be produced’, his beliefs were well-founded. In 1984 he produced the first vintage of the wine with which he will forever be associated, Le Cigare Volant (the story of the name features in the interview). Cigare, a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre (Since 2017 changed to Cinsault), Syrah, and other classic Châteauneuf grapes. During his high time, Randall produced more than 30 wines on any given vintage. I ask which wine he was most proud of and impressed by the quality. His writings constantly return to the concept that has dominated his life: the search for a true vin de terroir, not a vin d’effort.Randall's accolades are as numerous as the risks that he took over the years, including producing one of the first dry roses of California in the 90s, staging the "funeral" of Mr Bouchon aka Cork, using Demijohns (all the reasons are discussed in the interview) and he even managed to be interviewed by Oprah. We then discussed his latest project Popelouchum (Poh-puh-loo-shoom), a "New World grand cru" experimental vineyard in which Grahm hopes to breed 10,000 new grape varieties. He explains how he's using natural cross-breeding to find a variety that is 100% suited to the growing condition of the site. The project will take generations and so the restless experimentation continues. We will have to wait a long time to see the results of the San Juan Bautista project but whatever sort of wine it produces it will be nothing less than interesting. And Grahm will be that much closer to his goal of creating a true vin de terroir.Randall Grahm is truly a maverick winemaker that has inspired many others in California.

In today’s episode, we’re chatting with the rockstar Californian winemaker Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon winery who blends wit and wisdom unlike any other person in the wine world. He’s brilliant both in his insights and his metaphors. That’s why I chose to help him with the fall harvest for my second book “Unquenchable: A Tipsy Search for the World’s Best Bargain Wines.” His wines are also often favourites of the students of my online courses. Randall Grahm was born in Los Angeles in 1953 and attended the University of California at Santa Cruz where he was a permanent Liberal Arts major. Sometime later he found himself working at the Wine Merchant in Beverly Hills sweeping floors. By dint of exceptionally good karma, he was given the opportunity to taste an ungodly number of great French wines and this singular experience turned him into a complete and insufferable wine fanatic. He returned to the University of California at Davis to complete a degree in Plant Sciences in 1979, where owing to his single-minded obsession with Pinot Noir he was regarded as a bit of a holy terroir in the hallowed halls of the sober and sedate Department of Viticulture and Enology. With his family’s assistance, Randall purchased property in the Santa Cruz Mountains in a quaint eponymous hamlet known as Bonny Doon, intent on producing the Great American Pinot Noir. The GAPN proved to be systematically elusive but he was greatly encouraged by experimental batches of Rhône varieties, and he has been a tireless champion of the grapes of the Rhône since the inaugural vintage of Le Cigare Volant. His idiosyncratic newsletters and articles have been collected, carefully redacted, and with the inclusion of some timely new material, published as the award-winning book, Been Doon So Long: A Randall Grahm Vinthology in 2009. As Steve Martin once said, "those French have a word for everything!" That word for a "sense of place" or flavor of the soil is terroir. Terroir is the nature of a place, uniquely expressed in food, beer, coffee or wine.  Healthy soils that are rich in friendly bacteria and fungi, uniquely brand a sense of place that we can taste. Randall Grahm, the pioneer wine producer who created Bonny Doon Vineyards says  we are starved for meaning and we want our experiences to be more meaningful with a deep connection between us and earth.  He is on a journey to produce wines of place that are intrinsically more meaningful than wines of effort.  "If you can make a wine that somehow captures the uniqueness of nature itself, you are tapping in to a much larger intelligence  and system than anything that just comes from human imagination."  Randall joins Farm To Table Talk and reminds us of the significance of Place to Table.

Run a blood test, find low levels of a hormone. Prescribe synthetic version of said hormone. Two weeks later your patient is back with a slightly different set of symptoms. Run another blood test, prescribe another hormone. If there's too much, block it, if there isn't enough, just add more. Rinse and repeat for hypothalamic pituitary adrenal, thyroid and gonadal axes. Refer out to a gastroenterologist for chronic diarrhoea. Gastroenterologist diagnosis is “irritable bowel syndrome”, says it’s nothing to do with diet, suggests colonoscopy, anti-inflammatory drugs, possible surgery. This sounds like a parody. But this is what happened to me, and it’s still happening to other athletes. Finding a better solution inspired me to quit my day job as a computer programmer at a hedge fund and start a new business with my wife (a food scientist) and a medical doctor. 2015 was our first full year in practice. At the time of recording, we’ve helped over 600 athletes with their diet and lifestyle. We’ve gotten great results and get tremendous satisfaction from each and every success story that we receive. Our success has been in large part due to the significant research and development efforts of our new Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tommy Wood, and by the tireless efforts of our single employee and registered nurse, Amelia Luker. Our gross revenue was nearly $500,000. Unfortunately, Julia and I only took home $90,000 of that as profit, and that’s with both of us working full-time. If I hired two members of staff to replace us at the going market rate, we’d be making a significant loss. Health coaching is hard because not only do you have to be a great practitioner, you must also be a good business person and marketing expert. On the plus side. Quitting my job has enabled us to move from a condo on a busy main road in Oakland, to a small house amongst the trees in a town called Bonny Doon, not far from Santa Cruz, in California. I get a quarterly email from the recruiter at Google, but if I were to go down that route I’d be leaving to commute to an office before my daughter got up in the morning, and I’d be lucky to get home before she went to bed at night. I don’t wish to be mean but… I could train a monkey to run a blood test and prescribe a hormone. Doctors are being made prisoner to a system that prevents them from making proper use of their education and spending an appropriate amount time with their patients. People don’t even know how much their health insurance costs and half the time it doesn’t cover what they need. I’m still slightly angry about the current standard of care, and I’m looking forward to being made redundant; I rather miss computer programming. Are you a financially successful health coach? Please let me know in the comments section below. Here’s the outline of this interview with Julia Kelly: 0:01:09    Was it fun? 0:01:33    It was a shock to the system. 0:02:04    The sudden changes are stressful. 0:02:48    We were living in Oakland. 0:03:04    Quitting my job enabled us to move to Scotts Valley. 0:03:44    We've bought a house in Bonny Doon. 0:04:10    Ours is the only WiFi signal. 0:04:46    We can grow our own food. 0:04:57    Starting a business is a double edged sword. 0:05:27    Looking after a 2 year is hard! 0:05:46    Cheating at parenting. 0:06:29    Working at home I get to see my daughter all day long. 0:07:29    I'm still slightly angry. 0:07:50    I've stopped doing free consultations now, but you can still do one with Amelia. 0:08:25    Run a blood test, find low hormone, prescribe the hormone, rinse, repeat. 0:08:44    Nobody is doing the proper investigation. 0:09:38    The low hormones are symptoms. 0:10:55    We're waiting to be replaced. 0:11:14    Julie feels the same about saturated fat. 0:11:58    Tommy is planning on doing another residency. 0:12:21    Tommy is now our Chief Medical Officer. 0:12:55    We hope that the people we help go on to spread the word. 0:13:54    All diseases are complex with many underlying causes. 0:14:41    One over the treatment is not necessarily the cause. 0:15:42    Julie doesn't do diet plans, instead she teaches. 0:16:33    Everyone else wants to hold the cards close to their chest. 0:17:09    You can check your own blood glucose. 0:17:24    By now you should have done a Google search for 8-Oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine. 0:18:15    Is this working? 0:19:13    We have more follow-up calls then we have time to publish. 0:19:56    Of course it worked! 0:20:43    We don't have a magic formula yet. 0:20:59    We've tested 605 athletes as of yesterday. 0:21:42    At this point, our programs don't resemble anything we've been trained in. 0:22:21    Social isolation with Bryan Walsh. 0:22:35    Our gross revenue for 2015 was nearly $500,000. 0:23:11    Mark Newman of Precision Analytical. 0:23:44    There's almost no markup on our tests, we're passing those on at cost. 0:23:59    Most of our money comes from selling our time. 0:24:20    We do make some money from selling supplements. 0:24:54    Amelia ships all the supplements. 0:25:20    Making money selling supplements requires the economy of scale. 0:25:52    Bob Rountree talked about NiaCell® (nicotinamide riboside). 0:26:17    Between the two of us we took home $90,000 before tax. 0:26:54    In a way, we have achieved the four-hour work week. 0:27:26    I should have a master's degree by now. 0:28:05    If you really want to get better as a practitioner you must continue your education. 0:28:35    My education is problem driven. 0:28:47    I'm racing pro again this year. 0:29:06    Computer programmers are lazy. 0:29:54    I take the same approach with my training. 0:30:46    Necessity is fantastic teacher. 0:31:17    I won the series points competition at our local cyclocross races in the elite men category. 0:32:13    The Colnago days. 0:32:57    NorCal cross is bumpy. 0:33:25    Now I can sleep after a bike race. 0:33:41    The sugar monster has slayed. 0:34:08    Tommy is a big fan of carb cycling. 0:34:42    The average power in cross is meaningless. 0:35:05    I've been supplementing with exogenous ketones. 0:35:24    Volek showed no difference in glycogen. 0:35:48    Carb cycling made no difference to me. 0:36:38    My path is becoming a theme. 0:37:17    Know who you want to help! 0:37:29    The Practitioner Liberation Project. 0:38:00    I haven't done all of the course. 0:38:10    The most important lesson is be specific. 0:39:14    The people we work with are exactly like me! 0:40:41    We haven't borrowed any money. 0:41:18    Our Concierge Clinical Coaching group. 0:42:12    Now I can answer questions without going bankrupt. 0:42:59    My education is now available for $99 a month. 0:43:55    Please let me know if you found this helpful in the comments section below.
