Tuning In to Healing: Meet Passenger Recovery Radio

Creative communities, on one hand, offer spaces for connection, self-expression, and profound meaning-making – all awesome things. But on the other, particularly in scenes built around music and nightlife, they can become entwined with cultures of substance use, creating environments that are difficult, even dangerous, for those navigating addiction or seeking recovery. So how do you build support within those communities? How can the very tools of culture – the music, the art, the shared experience – become instruments of healing and connection for those who need it most? And can you create spaces that are genuinely welcoming, that meet people where they are, without demanding they leave behind what shapes their identities? On your Daily Detroit for Wednesday, April 9th, 2025…. My guests today are wrestling with these questions, not in theory, but through practice, on the ground in Hamtramck, Michigan – a dense, diverse city within Metro Detroit known for decades as a center of music and culture.  Joining me are Christopher Tait, the founder and director of Passenger Recovery and a longtime musician, and Joshua Lange, the station manager for their community radio station, WHCK, have built something unique. Passenger Recovery started by supporting musicians trying to stay sober but has grown into a broader community recovery organization that uses music and the arts as pathways to support. Their radio station is, in many ways, an audible extension of that mission – creating community, reducing stigma, and offering resources over the digital airwaves. He . . . [fed] you with manna . . . to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. — Deuteronomy 8:3 When I was a little girl, my family often visited the small Polish community of Hamtramck, near Detroit, on Saturdays. We kept our windows down on a nice sunny day while looking for a good parking space. The wonderful aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air. Bread is delicious, filling, and nutritious, but not enough to sustain our body, mind, soul, and spirit. While the Israelites were in the wilderness for forty years, they were hungry for physical food. God fed them manna from heaven daily to teach them that people do not live “on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” Manna was unlike anything the people had eaten before. Many years later, when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness for forty days, he was hungry also. The devil tempted him to tell a stone to become bread. But Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone'” (Luke 4:4). How can we put a good plan in place for renewal and restoration in life? We can satisfy our hunger by reading the Bible daily, worshiping the Lord with his people each week, and also meeting for a weekly study to grow in knowledge and understanding. We might also find that we need more of the Word at different times of the day. Ask God's Spirit to guide you, and grow! Lord, guide us to read and meditate on your Word, growing in the grace, knowledge, and love of Jesus. Amen.

In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we meet Tahura Holly and Nikunj Jain, founders of Corqueboard, a digital advertising platform designed to replace traditional cork boards in local businesses. Tahura shares how her time in India inspired her business journey; after moving there in 2017 and immersing herself in the jewelry trade, she returned to Michigan and launched Festive Essentials, a brick-and-mortar store in Hamtramck specializing in Indian jewelry. As she promoted her store, Tahura noticed idle screens in local shops, which sparked the idea for Corqueboard—a network of digital screens where local businesses can easily upload and display ads, specials, and announcements. Nikunj brought his technical expertise to the venture, helping create an efficient and user-friendly platform for business owners.Corqueboard operates through a simple setup: a small device (similar to an Amazon Fire Stick) connects to a screen, enabling businesses to display dynamic content that can be managed with a QR code. This ease of use, including the ability to upload content directly from a smartphone, means even non-tech-savvy business owners can take full advantage. With Corqueboard, businesses like restaurants or retailers can monetize their screens by selling ad space to other businesses, turning idle screens into passive revenue generators. Pricing is customizable, so each business can set its own ad rates, ranging from free community promotions to premium ad placements. The couple discusses how their complementary personalities enhance their business partnership, though they face typical challenges of working together. They rely on honesty and clear communication, blending Nikunj's outgoing nature with Tahura's introverted approach to manage both their personal and business dynamics. They credit their different perspectives for helping refine Corqueboard's user experience, with Tahura advocating for simplicity and accessibility in the interface.Tahura and Nikunj's recent addition to the Royal Oak Chamber has been met with enthusiasm, particularly with the launch of Corqueboard Mobile. This battery-powered, weatherproof digital sign offers a modern alternative to traditional A-frame boards, allowing businesses to display eye-catching digital menus or promotions outside. They've already seen local interest, especially from businesses seeking innovative ways to attract customers.Listeners interested in Corqueboard can find more information at corqueboard.com or contact Nikunj directly at (313) 378-3893. Both Tahura and Nikunj are excited to help local businesses in Michigan thrive by enhancing visibility through Corqueboard's growing digital network. We all know Donald Trump said and did a lot of racist, offensive, and Islamophobic things when he was president the first time round - and is promising to do so again if he wins a second term next week. It seems, however, that he has not said or done enough to deter the endorsement of a growing minority of Muslim Americans, such as Imam Belal Alzuhairi of The Great Mosque in Hamtramck, Michigan.  “I never claimed that he is infallible,” Alzuhairi tells Mehdi. “I never claimed that he is a saint. I never gave him a blank check. I see him as a leader who, in our discussions, committed to supporting values that matter deeply in our community… We said these are the five points, he said I agree 100% with you.” The imam not only stood on stage at a Trump rally in Michigan to announce his endorsement, in what became a viral online moment, but he also separately met with the Republican nominee – something the Harris campaign, reportedly, refused to do (though they have met with other Muslim and Arab groups in that key swing state). “The other party [Democrats] does not have any time for us and does not have any regards for us as Muslims,” says Alzuhairi. “Now, they understand that… we're not in your pockets. I mean, we have alternatives.”Mehdi, of course, pushed back on the idea that Trump can be trusted or considered “the peace candidate” or the candidate of “family values,” in the provocative words of Imam Alzuhairi. You'll have to watch the full interview above to hear how heated their discussion got!  This is a public episode. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (02/28/2024): 3:05pm- On Wednesday, during a speech from the Senate floor, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced that he would be stepping down from his leadership position at the end of the term in November. Though, he does not plan to resign from the Senate. McConnell, now 82-years-old, has served in the U.S. Senate for nearly 40-years and has been the leader of the Senate Republican Conference since 2007. You can read more here: https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4494536-mcconnell-to-step-down-as-senate-gop-leader/ 3:15pm- According to reports from both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, during a White House meeting on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) joined Democrat leadership—President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries—in pressing Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) to vote on a bill that would send tens-of-billions of dollars of foreign aid to Ukraine. The bill, which passed in the Senate, has stalled in the House of Representatives. 3:40pm- On Tuesday, Michigan held its Republican and Democrat primaries. Donald Trump defeated Nikki Haley 68% to 27%. Meanwhile President Joe Biden won 81% of the vote—though, “uncommitted” received a shocking 101,000 votes, or 13% of the Democrat electorate. According to estimates, “uncommitted” earned enough support to be awarded 2 delegates. Perhaps most alarming for Democrats, “uncommitted”—which beat Biden in Dearborn and Hamtramck, both of which have large Arab American populations—also performed well in East Lansing and Ann Arbor, two college towns. Is Biden struggling to appeal to young voters? And what could that mean for Biden in a general election? 4:05pm- On Wednesday, President Joe Biden had his annual physical at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center—though, he received no cognitive test. During her White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted that Biden “passes a cognitive test everyday” as president. You can read more here: https://www.wsj.com/politics/president-biden-gets-annual-physical-amid-concerns-about-age-76a608c9?mod=hp_lead_pos3 4:15pm- While appearing on CNN with Erin Burnett, former Obama Administration Advisor Van Jones reacted to the idea that Robert Kennedy Jr. might be able to win traditionally Democrat voters in swing states who may be unhappy with President Joe Biden's policies. Jones noted that Kennedy is “on track to be in enough states to cost Joe Biden the presidency.” 4:30pm- David Kappos—Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office under Barack Obama (2009-2013)—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a Biden Administration proposal that would reinterpret the Bayh-Dole Act which deals with the development of intellectual property arising from research funded by the federal government—with ownership of the invention/patent being granted to the entity responsible for actually conducting the research. Rather than alter the bill through the legislative process, President Joe Biden may act unilaterally via executive order. And under Biden's proposed alteration to the Bayh-Dole Act's framework, he would weaken patent ownership—hobbling technological, medical, and scientific innovation done at universities, for example, in the process. A letter to Biden, signed by Kappos and other former government officials, states: “We believe the adoption of the Draft Framework would destabilize our nation's entire technology transfer system which is central to U.S. innovation, and we thus implore you to withdraw the framework in its entirety.” 4:50pm- After a seven-hour deposition, Hunter Biden and his attorney Abbe Lowell emerged from an office building on Capitol Hill. Lowell briefly spoke with members of the press and claimed that Republican members of Congress were unable to produce any evidence that Hunter Biden, or the Biden family, ever engaged in corrupt business practices. 5:00pm- Regina Egea—President of the Garden State Initiative (GSI) & served as Chief of Staff to former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss Governor Phil Murphy's proposal that New Jersey adopt a corporate tax rate of 11.5%, which would be the highest in the entire country. How would this new proposed exorbitant tax impact job creation throughout the state? 5:20pm- Jess Bravin of The Wall Street Journal writes: “The Supreme Court agreed to consider whether Donald Trump must stand trial on charges he plotted to overturn the 2020 election, after lower courts rejected his claim that he is entitled to absolute immunity because he was president at the time. The court's move means it will have final say on an issue the judiciary never confronted before Trump. But it also means the former president has bought himself at least another couple of months before any trial, which had been scheduled to start in early March before the immunity battle scuttled those plans.” You find more on this developing story here: https://www.wsj.com/us-news/law/supreme-court-to-say-if-donald-trump-must-stand-trial-in-2020-election-conspiracy-case-1b7f4e3f 5:40pm- Phil Kerpen—President of American Commitment—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's announcement that he will be stepping down at the end of the term in November. Who is likely to replace him as leader of the Senate Republican Conference? Kerpen thinks it might be Sen. John Thune (R-SD) who currently serves as Senate Minority Whip. Plus, according to reports, Congressional leaders have agreed to a short-term bill to avoid a partial government shutdown which was at risk of occurring at the end of the week. And did Governor Gavin Newsom really exempt Panera Bread from new state minimum wage laws because they contributed to his campaign? You can learn more about American Commitment here: https://www.americancommitment.org/about/ 6:05pm- Andrew C. McCarthy of National Review writes: “[Donald] Trump's legal team has asked the Appellate Division-First Department to accept a $100 million bond for the purposes of enabling him to appeal the civil-fraud judgment against him and of stopping New York attorney general Letitia James from beginning to execute that judgment—i.e., to start seizing his property if he can't pay up in cash. Without Presidential Immunity, a President will not be able to properly function, or make decisions, in the best interest of the United States of America. Presidents will always be concerned, and even paralyzed, by the prospect of wrongful prosecution and retaliation after they leave office. This could actually lead to the extortion and blackmail of a President. The other side would say, ‘If you don't do something, just the way we want it, we are going to go after you when you leave office, or perhaps even sooner.'” You can find the post here: https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/112011584636454428 6:40pm- On Wednesday, during a speech from the Senate floor, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced that he would be stepping down from his leadership position at the end of the term in November. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: On Wednesday, during a speech from the Senate floor, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced that he would be stepping down from his leadership position at the end of the term in November. Though, he does not plan to resign from the Senate. McConnell, now 82-years-old, has served in the U.S. Senate for nearly 40-years and has been the leader of the Senate Republican Conference since 2007. You can read more here: https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4494536-mcconnell-to-step-down-as-senate-gop-leader/ According to reports from both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, during a White House meeting on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) joined Democrat leadership—President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries—in pressing Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) to vote on a bill that would send tens-of-billions of dollars of foreign aid to Ukraine. The bill, which passed in the Senate, has stalled in the House of Representatives. On Tuesday, Michigan held its Republican and Democrat primaries.
