Thistle & Nest, an affordable housing provider in Bend, says the city’s new tree code isn’t flexible enough and is raising the cost of building new housing in Central Oregon. At one of the affordable housing developments Thistle & Nest is currently building, the code will mean fewer homes get built, according to the organization, which is refusing to submit a tree preservation plan for the site. That challenge is currently being reviewed by a hearings officer and could be appealed to the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals. Amy Warren, board president and co-founder of Thistle & Nest, joins us to explain why the nonprofit has decided to challenge the tree code.

Choses à Savoir
Pourquoi le chardon est-il l'emblème national de l'Écosse ?

Choses à Savoir

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2025 2:30

Under the direction of Alexandra Bodnarchuk, Doma Dance Theater creates dance works for the stage and screen that explore the body as a tangible site of culture. Doma, the Carpatho-Rusyn word for “at home,” cultivates a sense of belonging, curiosity, and exuberant self-expression for its performers and audiences. Doma's cross-cultural approach creates powerful contemporary dance works that examine shared experiences of diaspora and displacement. Informed by Bodnarchuk's pan-Slavic cultural upbringing in Pittsburgh, PA, Doma's work incorporates cultural influences, circular spatial patterning, and intimate partnering. As the first Carpatho-Rusyn American choreographer to make contemporary work with a folk lens, Doma's works blaze a trail for Slavic representation in contemporary dance, demonstrating the enduring necessity of unearthing the cultural legacies each of us carry.Founded in 2024, Doma represents an evolution of Alexandra Bodnarchuk Dance Projects (ABDP), founded in 2017. Building upon Bodnarchuk's past focus on body identity and societal expectations of womanhood, Doma continues to unfold the embodied experience in an ongoing search for the elusive feeling of home.Doma'a inaugural season includes performances at Candy Box Dance Festival, and Thistle & Rose at Celtic Junction. For more information visit domadancetheater.org or follow them on Instagram @domadancetheater. Doma Dance Theater's new work for the 2025 Candy Box Dance Festival is set against an aural backdrop of Carpatho-Rusyn folk songs from the Šambron and Poloniny regions of Eastern Slovakia. Featuring dancers Alexandra Bodnarchuk, Non Edwards, Odessa Rain, and Yukina Sato accompanied by Mila Vocal Ensemble, the women weave in and around each other in syncopated harmony.

Hey Friends! This week we're talking about Late Bloomer by Mazey Edding! We're talking about buying a flower farm, what would we do if we won the lottery and some seriously spicy sapphic chemistry and more! Book description below Theme Song by Man With Roses. Winning the lottery has ruined Opal Devlin's's life. After quitting her dead-end job where she'd earned minimum wage and even less respect, she's bombarded by people knocking at her door for a handout the second they found out her bank account was overflowing with cash. And Opal can't seem to stop saying yes. With her tender heart thoroughly abused, Opal decides to protect herself by any means necessary, which to her translates to putting almost all her new money to buying a failing flower farm in Asheville, North Carolina to let the flowers live out their plant destiny while she uses the cabin on the property to start her painting business. But her plans for isolation and self-preservation go hopelessly awry when an angry (albeit gorgeous) Pepper Smith is waiting for her at her new farm. Pepper states she's the rightful owner of Thistle and Bloom Farms, and isn't moving out. The unlikely pair strike up an agreement of co-habitation, and butt-heads at every turn. Can these opposites both live out their dreams and plant roots? Or will their combustible arguing (and growing attraction) burn the whole place down?

Continuing our exploration of ecofeminist theory and practice, March's edition puts an emphasis on ecofeminist practice and actions we all can take to put women in places of power to (re)generate the healing changes and salves we need in society to work together to overcome greed and land grabs, and work for a future of sane decision making in the direction of catastrophe prevention, including in the rebuilding of LA. Hear from Ava Park, Priestess of the Temple of the Goddess of Orange County, tell us a bit about her women-only organization and a bit about her philosophy and then go on to tell us about how members of her community were impacted by the fires, including a member who called her in the middle of the night because she had lost everything, except the clothes on her back. At the end of the interview with Ava, she makes an appeal to WLRN listeners to write to Mayor Karen Bass at mayor.helpdesk@lacity.org and let her know that you support the reinstatement of lesbian fire chief Kristin Crowly. Below, find the template letter Ava suggests you work with. Dear Mayor Bass: Please reconsider the termination of Fire Chief Kristin Crowley. The circumstances of our recent fires here in Southern California were extreme and unusual. Many respected community leaders support Fire Chief Crowley, believe she has done a fine job, and that this may not be the time to make a drastic change. Crowley has the experience needed; she can learn from this past fire season and doubtless handle matters better with that knowledge. A new fire chief will have a big learning curve. Even if she has made mistakes, let our community benefit from the experience Crowley has now gained. Please reinstate Fire Chief Crowley and meet with her to design a plan for facing our coming fire season next year with all that you, your staff, the fire department and other Los Angeles leaders have learned from our recent disaster. Give Crowley the budget she says she requires to run the department properly. Nothing could be more important. See how she performs in the coming year. If you feel she is not competent, you can terminate her then and no one would question your judgment. Thank you. - (Your name and any title or location info you want to put to validate you are a real person) After the interview with Ava, stay tuned for Thistle's interview with comedian and actor Goldie Hoffman who reports that when she returned home there was a gray dust covering her yard, "...the bushes, the trees, the grass, everything." She describes touching it and going on to tell about the possible toxic content she and others likely have ingested and may continue to be ingesting. These are scary times and real stories coming from women on the front lines of ecofeminism in the sense of staying alive as the world burns around them, and aiding in a spirit of cooperation and community when possible. Finally, hear Sekhmet SheOwl's poignant commentary about how the number of homes destroyed in the fires really impacts how people are handling the aftermath and that men are raping and trafficking women in increased numbers due to their destitution, vulnerability and homelessness. Sekhmet calls for us to build our female friendships and community as the human ship goes down. Finally, on an up note, Freda invites us to learn more about WoLF Summer Camp for Radfems and to sign up here: https://womensliberationfront.org/2025-summer-camps

After the news, you'll hear the street song "El violador eres tú" from five years ago when women in Latin America took it to the streets and it went viral worldwide. After the song, hear the interview Lola did with a young UN Women organizer who talks about what it's like to be young and a feminist organizer, and who shares her views on the importance of solidarity in our movement. Jamie & Teresa will take a shot at answering this question with some help from a family medicine doctor Rachel Regan! Dr. Regan is passionate about other physicians knowing that it is possible to treat with alternatives to birth control, and give more holistic options for her patients. Dr. Rachel Regan is a board-certified Family Medicine physician who is currently practicing in the Dayton, OH area. She is an NFP-only physician and training to be a NaPro Medical Consultant. She graduated from Caribbean Medical University and then completed residency in 2023 through the University of Tennessee in Jackson, TN. As a Catholic physician she is passionate about teaching women about Natural Family Planning and alternatives to birth control, which eventually lead her to creating a website and blog to make information more easily available to women and couples. "I believe that there are much better alternatives to treating reproductive health problems than birth control. Not only does birth control go against many people's moral values and have a many potential side effects, but it can not be used to diagnose or treat the underlying cause of cycle irregularities and infertility. As an NFP-only physician, I wish that teaching about NFP and alternative treatment options was more widely accepted and taught within medical schools." Jamie & Teresa already knew how much they could learn from Sophie, in our first podcast with her in 2021, but to have her on a 2nd time is truly bringing us to a genius level! Link to previous podcast with Sophie: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s2-ep-7-gut-health-nutrition-and-getting-to-the/id1527363397?i=1000537722494 When Sophie Shepherd first started, SHE Talks Health back in 2017, she had but one goal – elevating and creating awareness about women's health, around the world. From the rise in infertility, to epidemically high numbers of chronic illness like Endometriosis, PCOS, and Hashimoto's, to the intricates of the female libido, irregular and painful menses, impact of hormonal birth control pill and stress and anxiety, SHE Talks Health, empowers women to reclaim their health through learning practical nutrition and holistic lifestyle changes. At 22 she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, put on medication and was told “There was nothing else they could do for me” Exasperated with how lousy she felt, she ended up firing her doctor to search for someone who would truly help her. Today, SHE Talks Health is globally recognised as an organization on the mission to help millions of women to have better periods, happier hormones, a relaxed gut and balanced moods. Empowering women to be the boss of their own health and lives, the organization helps busy women resolve painful and irregular periods, gut issues and anxiety by using the SHE Health Experience Method. This carefully curated method, an amalgamation of functional nutrition, sustainable lifestyle changes, eating psychology coaching, womb healing and functional lab testing, has proven to help women from all over the planet. “We are integrating coaching, lifestyle science, functional lab work and heart centered holistic nutrition coaching with emotional release activations and body love so that our clients feel better not only physically but emotionally and spiritually too,” says Sophie.
