POPULARITY
In Part 2 of our deep-dive into the gear of Steve Gadd, Paul Wells returns to unpack even more forensic-level details about one of the most influential drummers of all time. Building on the wildly popular Part 1, this episode revisits earlier conclusions with new photographic evidence, listener-submitted research, rare interviews, and meticulous analysis of Steve Gadd's drum kits, heads, sizes, cymbals, and studio backline setups from the mid-1970s through the 1990s. We explore: • Newly discovered photos from Saturday Night Live (1975) confirming early drumhead choices • The evolution of Gadd's Pearl/Gretsch hybrid kit • Deep analysis of Yamaha Recording Custom Kit #1 and #2 • Evidence-based breakdown of the Steely Dan “Aja” drum kit myth • Backline vs personal kits on classic recordings • The transition from Recording Custom to Maple Custom and early signature kit prototypes If you love drum history, gear archaeology, and Steve Gadd, this one goes deep into the weeds—in the best way possible.

The All Blacks were a flaming dumpster fire this week, and as loyal fans we are disgusted. Razor's backline looked like they'd just met in the carpark before kickoff, and Argentina gleefully ran riot in front of delirious Buenos Aires fans. Over in South Africa, the Wallabies gave the Boks a proper scare of potentially going back to back… until James O'Connor's boots decided they were made of Play-Doh. Grab a beer and enjoy. Backline.care is an organization that aims to provide mental health resources for humans in the music industry, and they have done great things since emerging in 2019. One of the people at the helm of that change is their clinical director, Ari Jacobson. In our chat, Ari takes us through his origin story; we talk about how he joined Backline and go through the circuitous route that led to him becoming a mental health professional in the first place. We discuss his upbringing in Baltimore, his background working in some of that city's toughest environments, and what he learned from those experiences. We also discuss his approach to his own mental health, the value he places on close relationships with friends and family, and what it's like to raise two boys in 2025. I'm very grateful to Ari for his time, and listeners, please drop a comment or a DM if you enjoyed this conversation!

The Los Angeles Galaxy officially unveiled their newest right back, 30-year-old Japanese Defender Miki Yamane. In his first press conference, what did we learn about the Galaxy's latest recruit and what does he bring to the backline? With Special Guest Gloria Jimenez, President of Angel City Brigade.
Thom is an incredible multimedia artist and musician that puts out monster sounds that can disturb your sensibilities as easily as soothe them. We had a lovely chat and I was honored to have him over to learn more about what makes him tick and for him to grace my drums. I was amazed at how easily he seemed to adapt to a kit not set up for him and without his usual double kick rhythms. You'll get a chance to hear his solo at the end of this conversation. Check out his IG for some inspirational and truly original content. Don't miss his link tree with so much original music of the last several years. @thom_nguyen__Backline some of his gear!www.batteriabackline.comHis Drummer Mindset Playlist contribution:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1FsCyxEflpIL4Hnwjp0qdK?si=6a4977a9fa794213Go see him live! The folllowing dates are for 2024Feb 4th - Brett Naucke duo GAZA Benefit at Static AgeFeb 9th - Vurn at Static AgeFeb 10th - Vurn at the Cave (Chappel Hill)Feb 22nd - Min Xiao-Fen, Mari Ohta Trio at Folkmoot CenterFeb 28th - Wind Cults at BMCMMarch 1st - Drums of Doom (Scott Middleton*, Elanti, & I) at Eulogy *Scott Middleton did the podcast! BONUS EPISODE (Part 3 of 3) – For our final episode of our Mental Health Series, we speak with Ari Jacobson, Clinical Director at Backline, about handling stress in the live event industry, and signs of it leading to depression in yourself or your peers. One of the most important things is to recognize and have awareness of the stress you are under – often ones not present in typical 9 to 5 jobs. It's important to understand what your “norm” is so that you're able to realize when you're feeling off that norm and rhythm. Our hosts talk through some of their own recurring stressful challenges, and the group discusses the many aspects of this industry that can cause highs and lows in people's lives. Ari offers excellent tips for balancing a stressful life, and how we should all set realistic goals. We should frame and look at failures as learning experiences and realizing you did your best but have room to grow. It's important to carve some time out of your day for yourself, however much that can be, and relaxing with some deep breathing that can center us and give us stress relief during our hectic schedules. Managing stress inducing things like emails, or even music you listen to, on stressful days can help reduce stress. Hear about Backline's free or discounted subscription services (like meditation, yoga, and others) and their free support groups, and how important it is to find like-minded people and friends that you can relate to, trust, and vent to when needed.“The time to relax is when you don't have time for it.” – Sydney J. We had the pleasure of interviewing EVAN GIIA about her journey in music and upcoming performance at M3F Fest over Zoom video!M3F Fest, North America's most celebrated non-profit music festival, has announced the lineup for the highly-anticipated 2023 edition at Margaret T. Hance Park in downtown Phoenix, Arizona from March 3-4. M3F donates 100% of festival proceeds to charity with a record $1.2 million donated last year and $4.4 million donated since 2004.Beyond the lineup, M3F has also announced the launch of its new M3F Fund. Expanding on their current charity focus, the festival has opened up funding to the public by offering an open application to non-profit or 501(c)(3) organizations that have clear objectives and a measurable way to assess progress. All organizations must submit a detailed plan of the requested amount of funding and how it will be allocated and a project timeline. The festival prioritizes funding related to the four primary pillars of its organization, which are Community, Education, Arts, and Environment. This expanded approach also provides more transparency to attendees with an updated process that requires organizations to provide a more detailed list of how they intend to use the funds, following up throughout the year to check in on where donations went to and creating a short video that details how the money was spent once. Attendees also play a key role in the M3F Fund. When fans buy a ticket to have a great time with their friends, they are also giving back to the community around them.M3F's lineup will once again bring together an eclectic group of artists across the worlds of indie, pop, R&B, electronic, and more. This includes the beloved Grammy-nominated vocalist Maggie Rogers, forward-thinking English beatmaker and producer Jamie xx, French electronic duo Polo & Pan, Detroit singer Quinn XCII, and the off-kilter sounds of the multi-talented Toro y Moi.Additional highlights include and German disco & house producer Purple Disco Machine, Mom + Pop signee Ashe, Nashville indie-rockers COIN, Connecticut pop and electronic singer Chelsea Cutler, the addicting sounds of Canadian indie favorites Peach Pit, Australian electronic producer Hayden James, Brit Awards “Best Dance Act” winner Becky Hill, and much more.Originally spawned as a team-building exercise for its producers, Wespac Construction, the festival acts as a philanthropic flagship for the City of Phoenix. The 2022 edition of M3F raised 1.2 million for charity, which doubled the amount of their previous edition in 2020. This included donations to organizations like the Music Therapy Program from Phoenix Children's Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Backline, Artist Advocacy Foundation, United Way, Arizona Helping Hands, Saving Amy, and more.M3F also partnered with Tonic to put on a block party in Phoenix to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event was free and featured music from Whethan, Surf Mesa, and thom.ko. This partnership with Tonic will see them donate $1 from every can sold in the state of Arizona during October to the Wendt Family Breast Cancer Program at St. Joseph's. Donations will ensure community members have access to the best breast cancer care possible, allowing more patients to receive life-saving treatment.Beyond music and charity, M3F also focuses its attention on sustainability with over 80% of waste being recycled each year. Guests can also enjoy an amazing variety of food and beverage offerings, art installations, and activities with more details to be announced ahead of M3F.Tickets for M3F are now on sale and can be purchased through their official website. We want to hear from you!
