In this third episode of a 5-part series on Awakening Your Authentic Self, we dive into our dreams to uncover the hidden messages our unconscious is trying to send to us. Tune in to learn more about the physiological and psychological function of dreams. I'll also give some tips on how to remember your dreams and decode some of the symbols that you may receive from your unconscious. You don't want to miss this episode! Brehony's “Awakening at Midlife”): After recording your dream in a journal, ask yourself these three questions: Why did I have this dream now? What issues in the dream are ones that I'm currently dealing with in my waking life? What conscious attitude is being compensated for by the dream? In this second episode of a 5-part series on Awakening Your Authentic Self, I discuss how life acts as a mirror by reflecting important lessons and insights about our true selves. In this episode, I discuss how you can use this mirror process as a tool for more self-awareness and self-understanding. I give examples of how problems in our lives, especially in relationships, are the Universe's way of getting our attention and alerting us to lessons we need to learn or wounds that need healing. When you understand that every problem in your life is an opportunity to learn something about yourself, you can then actively create an inner and an outer world that inspires and empowers you. Practice Exercise (from Shakti Gawain's “Living in the Light”): Think of someone whom you judge or feel uncomfortable with. Try to figure out exactly what quality this person has that you dislike. Is it possible that this is a quality within yourself that you deny or judge, and that your life could be enhanced if you made peace with, and were able to express that part of yourself? For example, if you dislike someone who appears very selfish, that person maybe reflecting the disowned part of you that wants you to pay more attention to taking care of your own needs. Perhaps you are overly identified with taking care of others. This week, I'm kicking off a 5-part series called: Awakening Your Authentic Self. Over the next five weeks, we'll embark on a quest to know ourselves deeply and honestly as we strive toward wholeness. In this first episode, I demystify Jung's concepts of The Persona and The Shadow. I discuss what “shadow work” is and why integrating into consciousness the parts of ourselves that we've repressed long ago is essential to our growth. I also offer starting points to help you begin shadow work. In future episodes, we'll look at how life serves as a mirror, what messages our dreams are sending us, ways to develop intuition, and how to unleash creative abilities. Ever wish you could effortlessly enter a state of focus or confidence? Or maybe you'd like to be more joyful or peaceful. In this episode, I discuss the importance of being able to access a variety of emotional and mental states. Your state of mind has an enormous influence on your behavior and actions. I offer a few easy NLP techniques that will help you access more desired and resourceful states. I'll also show you how to create and use “Anchors” (conditioned stimuli) to quickly and easily enter into any mental or emotional state you desire. Don't forget to subscribe to the show! Steps to Create an Anchor: Identify the emotional state or feeling you want to increase (e.g., a state of happiness or confidence). Then identify what you will want to use as your Anchor (e.g., a specific scent or something you'll touch). Before you fire the Anchor, access your desired state of mind by vividly remembering a time when you felt that way. Use all your senses—sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, feeling—as you remember this moment and the feeling. Bring yourself there as much as you can and really feel the sense of confidence or happiness that you want to feel. Notice your current state as you re-experience this moment. Are you smiling? Are you sitting up straight? Feel the moment and emotional state as if it's happening to you right now. Once you feel that you've hit the peak of this experience and you feel it intensely, Anchor the feeling (i.e., touch the item or smell the scent). Let it settle in for a bit. Experience the feeling of confidence or happiness as you fire the Anchor. When you start to feel the experience fade a little or get less intense, break the emotional state. Put your Anchor down and find a way to distract yourself. Repeat these steps until you are able to automatically enter your desired state when presented with the Anchor. After you've accessed the state and Anchored it a few times, it's a good idea to imagine a situation in the future when you'd like to be in that desired state. Then fire your Anchor and see how you feel. After a while, and with a few repetitions, you'll find that the Anchor brings you into that desired state. -------------------------------------------- GET IN TOUCH WITH VIRGINIA: Have topics you'd like me to cover? Feeling exhausted and unmotivated? It could be a sign that it's time to slow down, take a break, or even reassess your goals. It could also be your self-doubt and fear physically manifesting in you and making you resist taking action. The difference between resistance and needing to take a rest can be hard to distinguish. Getting it wrong can be detrimental to either your health or your success. In this episode, I share several powerful questions to ask yourself to help you determine the cause of your lack of energy. I also give helpful tips on how to beat exhaustion and start moving forward with your goals. Journal your answers to the following questions and see what comes up! Uncovering fear and resistance: What would happen if I were to have everything I want? Where are my thoughts getting in the way? Where in my body do I feel stuck? How might my actions (putting off what I need to do) be protecting me? What specific actions am I avoiding? What feelings am I avoiding? What am I too afraid to say out loud? Figure out if it's time for a break or to reassess goals: Where do I have unrealistic expectations of myself? Where am I too hard on myself? What rules do I have about how I should act and what I should do? What does it say about me if I take a break? What might it cost me if I take a step back? What might it cost me if I don't take a step back? What are my values? Does this project still align with them? Does a future-focused, goal-oriented mindset actually limit you? Highly ambitious people tend to overlook the benefits that are gained from fully experiencing the present moment. Do you find that the more you try to suppress an unwanted thought, the more you can't stop thinking it? Or the more you try to stop worrying about something, the more you worry? It's almost as if your mind is plotting against you. In today's show, I describe how the brain's built-in monitoring process causes you to lose control of your thoughts. We'll look at several experiments done by Harvard researcher Daniel Wegner that illustrate what happens inside your mind when you try to suppress a thought. I'll talk about why purposefully trying to prevent thoughts only increases their power. I'll also show you how having too much on your mind is causing you to focus on all the wrong stuff. Then, I'll outline five techniques you can use to harness your thoughts, gain better control of your mind, and live more peacefully. Don't forget to subscribe to the show! Resources: Wegner, D. M.
