Blaðamúr is a level six evocation spell with a range of ninety feet and a duration of up to ten minutes which requires concentration to maintain. Bladamur creates a wall of energy which is sharp to touch. While there is not measure for sharpness, the energy from bladamur can score tempered steel. The approximate dimensions of the wall can be manipulated but the maximum volume is around ten thousand cubic feet. That can be used to make a wall one hundred feet long, twenty feet high, and five feet thick or any combination there in. One researcher who studied the spell dubbed it a tornado of razor blades.
Svarta tentacles is a level four conjuration spell with a range of ninety feet a duration of up to a minute an requires a piece of tentacle from either octopus or squid. If ever you find yourself being pursued and happen to have a tentacle in your pocket, you can summon a twenty square foot area of squirming, ebony tentacles which will ensnare but not crush. When the spell ends, the appendages drift away as mist. The spell produces a random number of tentacles from four to as much as twenty, all about three feet in length. The prehensile strength of each is over one hundred pounds. The one thing they lack from a living octopus are ink sacks.
Madichon is a level three necromancy spell requiring touch and concentration and has a duration of about a minute. Madichon clouds the mind, making thoughts and speech difficult. It has a nasty bonus of causing superficial necrotic skin damage to both the castor and the target at the place where contact is made. Federal law prohibits this spell to be cast upon humans and there are currently twelve states including Texas and Ohio that ban all spells of this class. Be sure to check local regulations before casting.
Koorik is a second level transmutation spell with an hour duration which requires concentration to maintain and a handful of tree bark to cast. Koorik has an Estonian origin and is one of those spells which is more for fun than of any practical use. It gives the target's skin the appearance of the tree bark which the castor holds. This would be useful for camouflage but for a few caveats. It cannot be cast upon the self and the castor must be touching the target and maintain contact for it to work. So, unless two people both use the spell on each other the illusion will be broken.
Exilium is a level four abjuration spell with a range of sixty feet, a duration of up to a minute, and a material requirement of a piece of spoiled food. Exilium is used to temporarily send something or someone to what has been called the Void. Upon casting the target vanishes, leaving a vaccum in their place which cools the air as it rushes in. When the spell ends, the person is returned just as quickly but this time a rush of warm air is pushed outward and a faint popping sound can be heard. While in the void the person is in stasis, unconscious and unchanged. Scientists have studied the Void with probes but found there to be no light, no sound, and no measurable temperature nor pressure. It should be noted that due to the laws of thermodynamics and conservation of momentum, should a person be sent to the void, say while in a moving car, they will exit the void at the same speed, direction, and location but the car will have moved on. For this reason, exilium is illegal to use while moving except in an emergency. The Navy authorized the use of exilium for ejecting pilots in 1940, but the spell has a more common use in the sanitation industry. Since the spell consumes what is in essence garbage, worker's across the country use it to send objects in and out of the Void thousands of times a day to reduce waste. The object, called a gopher, varies from place to place but is usually a ball signed by all who use it.
Mea esebon is a level five abjuration spell with a minute duration that is cast upon the self. The next time you want to add some strength to your swing, cast mea esebon. The spell provides an approximately twenty percent increase of force towards the next thing you touch either directly by the hand or indirectly by a tool already in hand. If you wish to drive a nail with a hammer in one blow mea esebon will aid you. However, that task can become tedious as the spell would need to be cast for every strike. The spell is most commonly used in the construction and demolition industries.
Boa burbulla is a fourth level abjuration spell that is cast upon the self and lasts for up to ten minutes and requires concentration to maintain. The discovery of boa burbulla gave a solid defense against the radiation of dark energy as it produces a nullifying effect at a radius of thirty feet from the castor. The energy field moves with you and is centered around the wand. It causes no other effect than to protect against possible necrotic damage. As with most spells concerned with dark energy, this one has little use outside of a battlefield. Today it is strictly used as a protection for researchers studying the mysterious radiation.
Evulekile is believed to have been discovered in Africa upon the Zulu people. It is a ninth level necromancy spell which requires an hour to cast and a range of ten feet. The spell does have a high cost, consuming both one hundred grams of gold and ten grams of silver. In today's money that is over four thousand US dollars. Before you judge this spell's material requirement to be outlandish, first consider how powerful it is. Evulekile allows you and up to eight willing people within range to have your minds enter the astral plane. The easiest way to understand this state is to think of yourself as a ghost now able to move through the world unbidden by physics. You may fly across the globe or through it for that matter at the speed of thought. The only limits to you in the astral plane would be a barrier to magical energy such as the one created by tuhinga Magi and an inability to interact with anything that is seen. While in the astral plane, you will see a silver cord that flows back to your physical body acting as a tether. Should this cord somehow be cut death is instant. The spell ends when you actively dismiss it. You do not need to return to your body before doing so. Special measures should be taken to protect your physical body while in the astral plane as you will be numb to its condition. The use of this spell for surveillance has been well documented in de-classified documents for decades. But evulekile is invaluable for studies in geology and astronomy. There are currently twelve states including Texas and Ohio that ban all spell of this class. Be sure to check local regulations before casting.
Gonosz polip is a first level conjuration spell cast upon the self with an instant casting time and duration. This spell with a Hungarian origin taps into dark energy releasing powerful tendrils around the castor for ten feet. Anything within this radius will develop various forms of necrosis much like what occurs after frostbite or when bitten by a brown recluse spider. The radiation emitted from the release of dark energy causes death on a cellular level usually no deeper than the epidermis of the skin. Conventional treatment of the damage requires minor surgery to remove the dead tissue; a procedure called debridement. Gonosz polip is currently banned in all state but Colorado and Illinois.
The spell of the day is animagi spelled A-N-I-M-A-G-I. Animagi is an eighth level transmutation spell with an instant casting time, a range of thirty feet, and a duration that lasts if the castor can maintain both concentration and visual contact. Animagi allows you to transform others into beasts of any size while maintaining their own minds. This spell is useful when you need to give a friend the strength of an ox or the stealth of a cat. Be careful though as the person receiving the benefits of the spell may wish to disrobe before transforming as clothing is unaffected. Should a large creature be the goal, a few burst seams may be an unexpected result. The use of animagi was often used on the battlefield to turn an enemy combatant into a much smaller creature which could be easily caught or dispatched. This practice was eventually outlawed with the acceptance of international humanitarian law. As with all transmutation spells, permission must be given by all parties involved before casting.
Fronstpansler is a first level abjuration spell with an hour duration and can only be cast on the self. About eight fluid ounces of water are need for the spell. This spell of Norwegian origin places a field around the castor of frozen air measured at seventy-two degrees Kelvin or negative three-hundred-thirty Fahrenheit. The spell does not provide any magical nor conventional protection per say, it only forms a layer of very cold air. The castor does not feel the cold even when touching oneself but if someone else touches them, they could suffer frostbite. Should someone jump into water with this spell active, a layer of ice will continue to form around them. Once the spell ends, they will be locked into a thick shell of ice. Should you fall into water, it is advised to dispel frostpansler immediately. One of the best uses of frostpansler was in Finland during the Winter War. The massive Russian army invaded Finland in 1939 and for two months the small Finnish army with the use of frostpansler held back the invading force which was over twice as large. Today frostpansler is used by workers in the transportation industry to aid in keeping food stuffs from thawing.
Yeshou gan is a level two divination spell with a duration up to an hour and a range of touch. Yeshou gan is an ancient spell from China which allows one to share the senses of an animal. For the duration, you can see, hear, taste, and touch whatever your target animal does. The spell does not affect the animal and ends by breaking contact. A trip to the petting zoo takes on a new level with yeshou gan. You can see infrared radiation through the eyes of a snake, smell never known details with a dog, or hear the smallest movement with an owl. Yeshou gan has been used since animals have been domesticated and continues to aid
Valse wolk is a level two illusion and contact spell with a day long duration. It requires a small piece of silk to be cast. Any object or creature can either be made to look magical or have its magical nature hidden. While the spell does not change appearance, it can be useful when something or someone needs to be hidden. An interesting note, if valse wolk is cast on an item or person for thirty consecutive days, the illusion will last until dispelled. During the second world war, many magical items were secreted away from invading German soldiers by way of valse wolk. As an added level of security people would use the spell to make common items appear magical and poorly hide them as red herrings. Today, there isn't much use for valse wolk save for the occasional teenager trying to hide something from concerned parents.
Loka malosi is a second level abjuration spell with an instant casting time and an infinite duration. To be cast the castor must be in contact with the item they wish to enchant. If you ever want to lock something and rest easy knowing it will never be opened until you choose, then this spell is for you. However, be ready to dig deep into your pocket book. The material needed is two and a half grams of pure gold which is consumed by the spell. As of today, that is one hundred and two dollars. As you may have guessed from the cost, loka malosi is not a commonly used spell. According to record, the spell was used only thirty-two times in the United States in 2019. The reason for avoiding the spell is not only the cost but also the security. For example, the spell can most certainly seize the locking mechanism of a door from working but it won't prevent someone from removing the door from its hinges or simply cutting through the door itself. With more secure and cost-effective options today, loka malosi has fallen by the wayside.
Paka pantasma is a level five evocation spell with an instant casting time, a range of one hundred twenty feet, and a duration of one minute. The materials required are an egg shell and a snakeskin glove, the former of which is consumed by the spell. The spell requires concentration to maintain. Paka pantasma creates a floating hand which matches the size, shape, and strenghth of the castor. The hand is visible and solid which can be dispelled if struck with four thousand newtons of force or about nine hundred pounds. The spell will also fail if the hand is exposed to eighty degrees Celsius for more than five seconds. Don't get paka pantasma confused with a similar spell, pomicati. Both can be used to move objects and both are limited to the strength of the castor, but pomicati produces equal force around an entire object, while paka pantasma places force exactly as a hand would. This spell is useful when more intricate work is needed or when your work needs to be more visual. It also gives tactile feedback when touching.
Portal is a level six conjuration spell with an instant cast time, a range of five hundred feet and a duration of up to ten minutes. The spell requires concentration to maintain. While portal is a common word in the vernacular, it was not discovered as a spell until the fourteenth century. It opens two circular gates, five feet in diameter, one near the castor, the other up to five hundred feet away. The gates are always perpendicular to the Earth and can only be created in empty space and must be in visual range of the castor. The physics of the gates are quite interesting. They are two dimensional and open by fading from a mist, not like an iris as depicted in science fiction. They hover a few inches from the either the Earth or a grounded structure such as a building. One can only enter them from one side and from the obverse they appear as mist and are solid. Should a force of approximately six hundred pounds be placed on the obverse, the spell will fail. Once cast, the castor can rotate the gate horizontally. When the gates close, they fade away. Should an object be in the gate as they close, whichever side has the most mass is where the object will remain. You would think that a spell such as portal would make security a problem with people having the ability to circumnavigate checkpoints. But, since every wand holds a perfect, unalterable record of every use, the yearly registration along with hefty fines for trespassing, helps to keep people honest.
Occularis proxima is a fourth level divination spell with an instant casting time, a range of thirty feet, and a duration of about an hour. The spell requires a small patch of bat fur which is not consumed during the spell. The spell does require concentration to maintain. Occularis proxima creates an invisible eye, about one inch in diameter, that hovers and can be moved within thirty feet of the caster. The eye has normal vision and cannot pass through other objects. This spell is most prevalently used among the visually impaired but it has also found itself in the tool box of engineers whose job is visual inspection. While occularis proxima does grant the blind a way to see, it does not grant them all the rights of the sighted. The transportation safety board does grant the blind drivers' licenses because the concentration needed to maintain the spell, by definition, causes distracted driving.
Talitha cumi is a sixth level evocation with an instant casting time and a range of touch. Talitha cumi is the most potent know healing spell. With a single cast, it will sweep through the body, mending every broken bone, closing every wound, reconstruct blood vessels, and remove the disease. It can also cure blindness, deafness, and paralysis, but only if those ailments stem from an injury; the spell can not alter genetic conditions. While this spell sounds like the ultimate aid in wellness, it does have substantial drawbacks. Talitha cumi rids the body of all bacteria, including helpful gut flora as well as any antibodies. This makes the recipient susceptible to every disease as previous inoculations are removed. Those who receive today's spell as a treatment must go through a series of new innoculations and an often painful period of quarantine to rebuild immunity. Talitha cumi has a further cost. Researchers estimate that recipients lifespans reduce by 30 to 50 percent. No recipient over the age of 60 has lived more than five years after treatment. The most prolonged period after treatment for a recipient is 30 years. Floyd Lawson of South Carolina received the spell after he was struck by a car at the age of five. His injuries were beyond mundane medicine, so his parents requested the spell me used. Mr. Lawson died at the age of thirty-five from cardiac arrest. Further study continues on this spell discovered in Ohio in 1976.
Today's spell is Tuhinga Magi spelled as two words T U H I N G A M A G I. Tuhinga Magi is a level eight abjuration spell with an instant casting time, a maximum duration of an hour, and can only be cast upon the self. This spell requires concentration to maintain and a pinch of iron filings as material which will be consumed during the spell. Tuhinga Magi places a ten foot sphere around the caster. Within this sphere all magical energy is nullified. No spells can be cast and those that have been are suppressed for the duration. The sphere does not end a spell, it only stops it's effects while in the sphere. The spell cannot work against itself so should it encounter another sphere, the two would join, making a larger non-magic area. On the other side of the sphere, no magical items may enter, and enchanted items will have their abilities suppressed. The sphere created by Tuhinga Magi is moble and moves with the caster. Should you attempt to walk through a portal, the sphere will force the portal closed. Tuhinga Magi is considered the most powerful magical defense spell. It doesn't, however, provide any protection against non-magical items. If you've traveled through an airport since 2001, you've walked through a tuhinga magi sphere. To aid the TSA with keeping air travel secure, agents have been quietly suppressing magical energy while you walk shoeless through the metal detectors. A lesser known use of the spell is during sporting events to prevent magic from altering performance.
Pomicati is a level five transmutation spell with an instant casting time, a range of one hundred twenty feet, and a duration of about one minute. Pomicati requires concentration and constant eye contact. If you've every dropped your keys down a storm drain or just been too lazy to grab an item from the next room, you may have used pomicati. This spell allows you to animate an object but only one as heavy as you would normally be able to lift. But it is not limited to objects, any person or creature may be moved with pomicati with permission of course as doing so without can be considered assault. Pomicati may be used without persmission if it is deemed necessary.
Seta Utan is a level three necromancy spell with a minute casting time, a range of ten feet, and a duration of one day. This spell requires a drop of living blood, which will be consumed during the spell, and it may only be cast on a target once as subsequent attempts will result in unreliable results. This spell allows you to animate a dead creature with only enough brain function to walk, and even then, at a very slow pace. Also, this spell only really works on a creature who has recently expired due to quickly deteriorating muscles and brain. Seta Utan is a spell with a far eastern origin where pack animals were vital to the local economy. Should an animal die on a long journey, the goods it carried would have to be left behind. With the discovery of this spell, a driver would be able to at least get to the next village where a suitable replacement could be purchased. Federal law prohibits this spell to be cast upon humans and there are currently twelve states including Texas and Ohio that ban all spells of this class. Be sure to check local regulations before casting.
Today's spell is Amianamus spelled A-M-I-A-N-A-M-U-S. Amianamus is a level one enchantment spell with an instant casting time, a range of thirty feet, and a duration of one day. The spell has a material requirement of a food the animal must eat for the enchantment to take effect. Amianamus lets you convince an animal that you are not a threat. The spell will be broken however if the animal is harmed in any way. Skill must be employed to reap the benefits of this spell. Since an animal is unlikely to eat after it has been threatened, the caster must first anticipate it's behavior. Take care too that you feed an aggressive animal a second enchanted morsel before the first fades so to keep it under your spell. Take note that the one-day duration begins once the spell is cast, not when the animal eats the enchanted food. Amianamus is believed to be one of the oldest known spells and one of the most popular, being used to gain the trust of animals for centuries.
Today's spell is Wonimaohw spelled W-O-N-I-M-A-O-H-W. Wonimaohw is a level two transmutation spell with an instant casting time and a duration of one hour. This spell may only be cast upon the self as it is used to alter the appearance, but unlike a glamor spell which only appears to make a change, this spell's alterations are very real. There are three options for this spell which are chosen mentally when cast. The first is to alter the appearance which includes height, weight, facial features, voice, hair length and colorations and any distinguishing characteristics. The second option is aquatic adaptation where the body is altered for an aquatic environment by sprouting gills and growing webbing between the fingers and toes. The final option is to produce natural weapons like claws, fangs, spines and horns. As you may have guessed by the sound of the spell, it is of native american origin most notably of the Shawnee tribe of Kentucky. Wonimaohw is a favorite among children playing dress up and those whose jobs often find them in the water. While this spell sounds like it would be very powerful for deception, it is only as effective at mimicry as the person casting. But, even then, the task of resculpting the body to match every contour and subtle color of another is a monumental challenge that even the most skilled find difficult.
Poplach is a level one abjuration spell with a casting time of one minute, a range of thirty feet, and a duration of eight hours. This spell has a material requirement of a bell or chime. Poplach is used to guard against intrusion. The caster chooses a door, window, or other way of entry and when the barrier is breached the bell or chime used as the material will sound. While the spell must be cast within thirty feet of the point of entry, the caster may then move up to a mile away and still be alerted. The spell does not consume the casting material and it may be reused. Poplach has its origins in Eastern Europe where it was first used to guard religious relics. Today, it has similar uses at financial institutions but also more pedestrian applications such as for parents wanting to keep tabs on a wandering child.
The spell for the day is Fanampiana spelled F-A-N-A-M-P-I-A-N-A. Fanampiana is a level two abjuration spell with an instant casting time, a range of thirty feet, and a duration of eight hours. This spell has a material requirement ranging from latex to steel. Fanampiana is used to bolster the cutting resistance of the skin and is approved for use by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA. The level of resistance the spell offers is proportional to the type of casting material used. To protect oneself from nuisance cuts such as from handling paper, a one inch square of latex will suffice. However, for more industrial applications such as handleling heavy metal or glass, a steel coin can be used. For maximum protection, diamonds can be used as the casting material but doing so is highly cost prohibitive. The spell is OSHA approved due to its solid duration time. Unlike some spells that fade over time, fanampiana provides a consistent level of protections for a full eight hours then quickly dissipates.
The spell for the day is Kiselina Musev spelled with two words K-i-S-E-L-I-N-A M-U-S-E-V. Kiselina Musev is a level two conjuration spell with an instant casting time and a range of ninety feet. This spell has a material requirement of a small rhubarb leaf. After casting, an illuminated green arrow flies from the wand toward the target. Upon impact the arrow bursts into a spray of acid which is highly corrosive to flesh and metal but does not affect glass nor the Earth itself. Should the arrow miss it's target and hit the ground, it simply returns to the ether without a release of acid. If there is an acid burst, it quickly dissipates and cannot be stored. Kiselina Musev has been around since ancient times with its first historical reference by Galen the Elder in twenty-three A.D. The use of this spell as a weapon is well documented throughout history but today, this spell is mostly used in the commercial industry as a cleaning agent, catalyst, electrolyte, and in the home as a drain cleaner.
His tevli bibin is a fifth level divination with a range of thirty feet, a duration of an hour, and a material requirement of a piece of eggshell. His tevli bibin allows two people to create a telepathic link. Each person casts the spell on the other, and their thoughts begin to meld. The use of the spell with a new person is often overwhelming, causing headaches and nausea. With meditation and practice, two people can share any thoughts in their conscious mind. Today's spell is ancient, discovered in what is now Iraq around three thousand BC. Kings would share the spell with their prophets for dream interpretation and force spies into sharing their secrets. In 1924, the spell was banned from Olympic competition as judges felt it altered the essence of pairs figure skating. A darker use of the spell began as false prophets would claim to be able to see the future by sharing the spell with someone for a fee. They would then probe the person for financial information while at the same time implanting visions and thoughts in the victim's mind. The practice mostly preyed on lower-income, less-educated populations. In the last few years, this practice has had a resurgence in South Africa, with legislators struggling to stop it while still allowing for religious freedom.
Ruch Umyslu is a fifth level Transmutation with a range of sixty feet, a duration of up to ten minutes, and requires concentration to maintain. Ruch Umyslu allows one to move an object without touching it. Items can be lifted and moved toward or away from the castor within the area of influence. There is a limit to what can be moved because this spell has a substantial mechanical disadvantage. First, a person will be limited to lifting an item within their mundane abilities. Second, the greater the distance, the heavier the object will feel. For example, a one-pound weight will feel like one hundred and twenty pounds when it is ten feet away. At the maximum distance of sixty feet, the same weight will feel like seven hundred and twenty pounds. Discovered in Poland in 1914, ruch umlyslu has never grown to be more than a novelty.
Lux mundi is an evocation of the sixth level, with a range of self, a duration of a minute, requires concentration to maintain, and a material requirement of a transparent sphere like a glass or crystal marble. Lux mundi opens a type of portal upon the palm of the hands which acts as a window through the earth. Constellations and the moon are visible by looking through the hands. If angled correctly, sunlight will flow out of the palms. Discovered in 1882 in New Jersey by Edwin Scribner, Lux mundi could have changed the world forever. The industrial revolution ended around 1840, having brought the light bulb into existence. If today's spell had been discovered earlier many historians feel America's technological advancement may have been delayed due to complacency. Today, Lux mundi is limited to use outside of metropolitan areas and at least five miles from airports.
Gewitterwolke is a ninth level conjuration with a range of sight, a duration of a minute, and requires concentration to maintain. Gewitterwolke causes the rapid formation of a cumulonimbus cloud above the open ground. Below the cloud, in a radius of about three hundred and sixty feet, rain may fall, and the wind will blow. If a second instance of the spell is cast before the first ends, the ph of the rain lowers to about 3.5, which is less acidic than vinegar. After a third instance, lightning increases significantly. After a fourth casting, hail begins to fall as large as a golf ball. The fifth casting will produce freezing rain and winds up to fifty miles per hour, making concentration difficult. When the spell ends, all water and hail produced fades into mist. Gewitterwolke was discovered in Germany in 1891. Since then, nations around the globe have tried to make the spell viable for irrigation. Australia worked extensively from 1947 to the 1960s, and the United States held an experiment as recently as 2006 in Wyoming to examine the effects on snowfall. The most massive experiment ever conducted was in February 2009 in China. With a mix of technology and magic, snow began to fall in Bejing and lasted for approximately three days and led to the closure of twelve main roads. Later, in October, China recorded its earliest snowfall since 1987. The most common use of the spell is in the aviation and maritime training industries.
Kevlarbydupont is a fourth level abjuration with a range of touch, a duration of an hour, requires concentration to maintain, and has a material requirement of a pinch of diamond power which the spell consumes. However, synthetic powder works just as well with less cost. Kevlarbydupont makes the flesh of a living creature resistant to cutting and piercing while still being sensitive and flexible. Discovered in 1965 in Delaware by Stephanie Kwolek, the spell has become a staple in manufacturing and law enforcement. When used with the spell Aakasmikata (uh-cause-mit-kuh), today's spell will activate the instant the skin is touched. Kevarbydupont is fast enough to stop a bullet and save a saw operator from losing a finger. Researches found that the spell is slightly less effective when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet light, but the effect is not noticeable. The spell does not protect against heat, and should the skin be exposed to a temperature above 350 degrees, the spell will fail. If you watch the whitewater slalom event during the Summer Olympics, you will see each athlete cast Kevlarbydupont as it has been a safety requirement since the readoption of the sport in 1992.
Malodor is a third level conjuration with a range of 90 feet, a duration of up to a minute, requires concentration to maintain, and has a material requirement of varying amounts of sulfur. Malodor creates a 20-foot-radius sphere of noxious, foul-smelling gas. The more sulfur offered for the spell, the more powerful the stench. The legal limit for unregistered use is less than a gram, but just a pinch can make the spell thoroughly nauseating. Once the spell ends, the cloud dissipates, but the smell remains and can persist for days. The United States Army classified the exact origin of the spell. But, it has been around since at least World War II. Law enforcement uses Malodor for riot control and as an area denial weapon. During the Christmas season, county administrators in the northeastern United States will sometimes use Malodor on public-property evergreens to discourage poachers. The most common use of the spell is to test the effectiveness of bathroom deodorizers.
Schleppend is an enchantment of the third level with a range of one-hundred-twenty feet and a duration of about four minutes. Schleppend nearly quadruples the processing speed of the brain, allowing one to think and calculate at a super-human rate. However, there is a drawback; the perceived world slows down to quarter speed. People have reported feeling trapped in their bodies as they feel they are moving in slow motion. The spell lasts fully for two minutes, then fades over the next two. But for one under its influence, the experience seems to last for fifteen minutes. Schleppend was discovered in Germany by independent researchers Friedrich Stolz and Henry Drysdale Dakin in 1904. Even though another independent researcher in Japan, Jokichi Takamine, made the discovery four years earlier, the Germans were the first to file the discovery with their local magical authority, and thus they received the credit. On the morning of January 15, 2009, US Airways flight 1549 took off from LaGuardia airport in New York City. A few seconds later, both engines became disabled by a flock of Canadian geese. No commercial aircraft had ever lost both engines so soon after take-off, and no pilot had been trained for such an extreme event. Forty-nine-year-old, First officer Jeffrey B. Skiles, cast Schleppend upon himself so that he could work through the problem more quickly. His calculations determined that the aircraft would not be able to land at any nearby airport. He relayed his conclusion to lead pilot, Chesley B. Sullenberger, who skillfully crash-landed the plane into the Hudson River, saving the lives of everyone on board.
Hearme is a third level evocation with an unlimited range and a material requirement of a quarter gram of copper. This spell allows the castor to send a short message of around twenty-five words to any one person, anywhere on Earth. The receiver will hear the sender's voice as if they were a few feet away yet it is unperceivable to anyone else. Hearme was discovered in San Francisco on March 21, 2006. This time was the beginning of the tech boom when millions of people were opening social media accounts. The ease of sending instant messages online made Hearme obsolete before it's first use. Plus, the cost of copper would make each message cost about fifteen cents at the time. An interesting note is that mobile phone companies lowered their text message rates to undercut any competition this spell would have offered. Hearme is mostly used in developing regions by those who do not have access to mobile technology. One drawback of Hearme is that the receiver of the message has no control overhearing the spoken words. In the same year of its discovery, the FCC amended the Telephone Consumer Protection Act to include unsolicited uses of Hearme. Local offices of the Department of Magical Affairs have equipment and personnel trained to track the source of the spell to protect anyone who may feel they are being harassed.
Reparacio is an entry level transmutation with a minute casting time, a range of touch, and a material requirement of two lodestones. Reparacio mends an item with a break or tear no longer than ten inches. The spell works on non-organic material leaving no trace of a rip or fracture. Discovered in Spain in 1930, Reparacio gained fame in 2012 when it was erroneously used to restore a painting in the Sanctuary of Mercy church in Borja, Spain. An elderly parishioner took it upon herself to restore a fresco on the church wall. The original paint used had a high amount of organic material and did not respond well to the energy of the spell. The plaster wall was renewed but the paint shifted color and position. The painting, originally of a man, took on the appearance of a monkey. At first, the act was seen as vandalism but became an internet sensation. By 2016, the number of tourists visiting the town had increased from 6,000 to 57,000 a year.
