This week Matthew and Riki discuss two pivotal episodes from season 4 of Star Wars Rebels. In episode 13, "A World Between Worlds," we're introduced to a mystical realm that connects all of time and space in the Star Wars universe. Ezra is able to pull Ahsoka from her fateful duel with Darth Vader in this mystical world between worlds. While captivating visually, Matthew and Riki have some concerns about introducing this level of power over time and space into the Star Wars canon. It could act as an all-powerful plot device or retcon elements, which they worry may undermine storytelling. However, the concept allows Ahsoka to realistically survive and still be unavailable during the original trilogy.Episode 14, "A Fool's Hope," brings together a lovable ragtag group including Hondo, Gregor, Wolffe, and Ketsu to help liberate Lothal. Their fierce loyalty to Ezra feels genuinely earned after years of friendship and camaraderie. Ryder's fake betrayal of the rebels fools both the audience and the arrogant Governor Pryce, contrasting her ego with Grand Admiral Thrawn's true cunning. Visually, a standout moment involves the Loth-wolves' glowing eyes emerging from darkness to terrify the imperials. After the plot discussion, Matthew and Riki go into spoilers, analyzing how these episodes connect to Ahsoka's mysterious absence after Return of the Jedi and her role in the recent Ahsoka TV show. Riki continues to be moved by the special relationship between Ezra and his master Kanan. They also recommend the new Thrawn books for more context on these events. As always, this episode offers thoughtful insight for both casual and diehard fans of Star Wars and its beloved animated series. No member bonus content for this one. We've started the conversation. The Jiki Ketsu Gaki is an ancient deity existing as a reincarnation of a soul. Due to past transgressions, it is cursed to consume blood for atonement. Such blood sacrifice is present in virtually every culture and religion. Jesus sacrificing his body and blood, himself a mortal, was a ritual to petition the heavenly Father to forgive the sins of man. Since blood contains the life force and biblically belongs to God, it can be used to either connect with Source or to disconnect from the same. Leviticus (17:14) tells us that life is in the blood and that those consuming blood will be disconnected from God: "the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.” The book of John (6:55-56) tells us that the body and blood of Christ, or the bread and wine, are symbolic as well as literal food and drink: "For My flesh is real food, and My blood is real drink." The literal 'bread' is life and the literal 'wine' or juice is an intoxicating substance that transforms one from simple to complex. The wine of Dionysus and Bacchus, which was thought to contain actual spirits, was responsible for creating altered states and hallucinations. In other words, turning a body made mostly of water into a vessel for the more complex wine just as Jesus did (John 2). The Solomonic demon Hagenti also has such a power. Cannibalism and blood drinking have also been used for centuries to obtain the strength of an enemy or to keep an ancestor from rotting in the cold hard ground.

Tōketsu-kyū is a sixth level evocation with a range of three hundred feet and a material requirement of a small crystal sphere. Upon casting, an atom of dark energy with a negative temperature shoots from the wand.  As it travels through the air, it freezes the water vapor and begins to grow.  The maximum size of the ice sphere is about that of a golf ball.  Once the sphere reaches the maximum range, it will dispel, but the newly formed ball of ice will continue.  If cast from a high position, such as the roof of a tall building, the impact can be lethal.  Serious injury can occur from any distance if shot horizontally.  If shot directly up, the ice sphere will fall back to earth at around fifty-four miles per hour. Discovered in Japan in the early 1800s, it has been used as a weapon in many wars.  Referred to a ‘guerilla rain,’ it was used to pummel opposing forces and led to victory in Japan’s invasion of Taiwan and the Boxer rebellion. Today, Tōketsu-kyū is used in testing aircraft design and scientific research.  In 2013, scientists discovered that what was once thought to be the coldest possible temperature, absolute zero, was nowhere near the truth.  As mentioned earlier, the spell creates an atom with a negative temperature, that is, below absolute zero.  This discovery has prompted scientists to come up with a new scale of measurement and dubbed the phenomenon, quantum gas. Tōketsu-kyū is a controlled spell in the United States which requires a permit to cast.

Operation Downfall was the proposed invasion of mainland Japan by Allied Forces near the end of WWII.  It was canceled because the atomic bombs were dropped and Japan surrendered, thereby removing the need for a military conquest.  It would have been the largest amphibious invasion in history, and it would have been the first time that a foreign power had set foot on mainland Japanese soil (in the country's 2500 year history).  Operation Downfall had two parts: Operation Olympic (Nov 1945) and Operation Coronet (March 1946).  Both were commanded by MacArthur and supported by Nimitz.  Operation Olympic involved the I, V, IX, and XI Corps storming the beaches of Kyushu (the southern main island) and taking airbases to support Operation Coronet.  Operation Coronet involved the First Army and the Eighth Army, as well as numerous British Commonwealth units, storming the beaches of Honshu near the capital city of Tokyo.  On the opposing side was Operation Ketsu Go, the Japanese defense of its main islands.  Most of Japan's forces (air and ground) were focused on the island of Kyushu.  Also, tens of millions of Japanese civilians (all able-bodied civilians, men and women) were trained in basic martial arts in order to repel the invasion.  In addition, the Japanese government created numerous suicide units to repel the invasion.  All in all, it would have been one of the bloodiest battles in history.  An estimated 1 million Americans and 10 million Japanese would have lost their lives.  For more information, read: The Japanese Army Handbook by George Forty The Pacific War Companion by Daniel Marston Military History Podcast is sponsored by Armchair General Magazine
