Matty J chats with rising star Tehya Makani, a proud Yawuru, Wadjarri, Pitjanjarra and Wadjuk woman, about her lead role in the brand-new SBS and NITV series Warm Props — premiering the same night of this interview. Tehya opens up about what it meant to film her debut TV role back home, how she landed the role of Charlie, and the deeply personal journey of reconnecting with culture, community, and country. They also talk about her work on the children's song Country Tells Us When through the Indigenous Literacy Foundation's Busking for Change project — a track being played across schools during Kullarri NAIDOC Week — and her ongoing musical and theatre projects, including touring with Big Name, No Blanket. Plus: advice for young creatives, funny moments from set, and what it's like acting in a film within a film.

In this episode of Age of Adoption, host Keith Zakheim welcomes Neal Rickner, CEO of Airloom Energy, about reimagining wind turbine technology. Neil, a former F-18 pilot with the Marines who later worked at Google X on the Makani project, explains how Airloom Energy is developing revolutionary wind turbines that can be mass-manufactured, easily transported, and deployed without specialized equipment—all while significantly reducing costs. Instead of pursuing marginal improvements through larger turbines, Airloom creates adaptable systems that can be installed in locations where traditional wind turbines aren't feasible.Airloom's innovative approach addresses key industry challenges by using standardized materials and simplified supply chains. Neil highlights partnerships with the Air Force Research Laboratory to develop resilient energy solutions for military installations and discusses how their technology can help reduce fuel dependency for forward operating bases. This episode demonstrates how rethinking fundamental technologies can create competitive advantages while expanding access to renewable energy globally.Neal Rickner is a technology entrepreneur and investor specializing in energy and aerospace. Before Airloom, Neal served as the CEO of BridgeTek Energy and the Managing Partner of Elevation Ventures. Prior to these roles, Neal spent nearly a decade at Google and Google[x] leading teams and developing energy projects. If you are a Volts subscriber, you are almost certainly familiar with Saul Griffith. I've been following him and his work for years, and I think I can say without hyperbole that he is the smartest person I have ever met. An Australian by birth and an MIT PhD by training, he got his start as a tinkerer, inventor, and entrepreneur, responsible for, among other things, the kite-based wind power company Makani and the innovation incubator Otherlab.A few years ago, alarmed by the lack of progress on climate change, he turned his attention to public advocacy, authoring the book Electrify and co-founding Rewiring America. That organization has, in relatively little time, become incredibly influential among US thought leaders and policy makers. It played a key role in the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.In 2021, Griffith and his family moved back to Australia, where he helped found Rewiring Australia, and sure enough, it has already become as or more influential than its American counterpart. As Volties know, I am currently down in Australia. I was scheduled to do a public event with Griffith, so I thought it would be fun to meet up a little beforehand to record a pod.Neither of us had particularly prepared for said pod, but it will not surprise you to hear that Griffith was nonetheless as fascinating and articulate as always, on subjects ranging from IRA to Australian rooftop solar to green steel. Enjoy. Get full access to Volts at www.volts.wtf/subscribe

Guest: Shoaib Makani, CEO of Motive“When we fail,” says Shoaib Makani, “it is because we have not understood the customer problem deeply and allowed them to guide us.” This wisdom is hard-won: Motive's first product, an app for fleet management of trucks, idled for four years before becoming a runaway success story. Emboldened by this, the CEO tried to make an orthogonal push into all kinds of freight, “guns blazing,” only to realize six months in that he had way overestimated Motive's competitive advantage. Retreating from freight was “painful,” Shoaib recalls, but helped the company extend its existing lead in trucking — and may have saved the whole business. In this episode — joined by special guest Ilya Fushman from Kleiner Perkins — Shoaib and Joubin discuss curiosity for the world, first impressions, reorienting yourself, electronic logging devices, directly connecting with customers, growing up as a CEO, waiting for the market, having a “low discount rate on the future,” the physical economy TAM, AI dash cams, and pricing in risk, and running out of runway. In this episode, we cover: Shoaib's Pakistani parents and doing extra homework (01:17) Explaining and experiencing startups (04:26) “High standards are infectious” (08:15) What Motive does (10:08) How Shoaib and Ilya met (10:54) The origins of Motive as “Keep Truckin'” (14:06) Working with friends (17:27) First-time founders (21:56) Deep empathy for users (24:01) Monetization and second-guessing (25:48) Sudden success and scale (29:12) Recruiting top talent (31:04) Shoaib and Ilya's personal-professional relationship (32:07) “I knew the board I wanted” (34:32) Motive's failed expansion into freight (36:21) Realizing and correcting the error (39:26) How to make smarter future bets (44:09) Second and third products (47:29) Back to the core mission (50:36) Autonomous driving vs. AI assistants (52:17) Thinking about competition (55:05) A tough conversation about runway (58:52) Sticking your neck out for your partner (01:04:09) Losing Ilya as a board member (01:06:23) Who Motive is hiring (01:08:32) What “grit” means to Shoaib (01:09:32) Links: Connect with Shoaib Twitter LinkedIn Connect with Ilya Twitter LinkedIn Connect with Joubin Twitter LinkedIn Email: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner Perkins This episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm

Big Cat Rescue's bobcat rehab team released two more rehabbed wild bobcats, Makani and Kekoa, back to the wild. Both bobcats took one last look back at the group before darting off to the woods together. As nature intended, these two wild cats now know the freedom that is their birthright. They are now free to live a natural life in the wilderness of Florida. It is exciting and a little sad for those who have watched these two wildcats grow from kittens into feisty adults ready to take on the challenge of thriving in the wild. Exciting to know these two wild bobcats will have great adventures and know there are no more cages for these two cats. Sad, because we will miss them. However, we are far more excited for them than we are sad for ourselves. The rehab team, led by Jamie Veronica, puts a lot of time and great effort into finding large forest areas that have plenty of space, prey, and water, and are as far from humans as possible. Now, they can sleep under the stars with no wire to look through. Join us in wishing these two precious wildcats the best as they are now home for Christmas. We hope their holiday season is filled with the joy of freedom.
